Google Translate for iOS Gets iPad Support
Calendar16 Fri, 06 Jan 2012 10:59:15 UTC +00:00
by Google Translate app for the iPhone has hit version 1.3.0, bringing important news for iPad owners: the app is now universal for iOS devices, which includes iPad support. The iPad app is essentially a scaled version of the iPhone app, so don’t expect anything groundbreaking. As before, the app lets you translate written text between 63 languages. It also lets you translate by speaking text instead of typing it, but this option works only for 17 languages. For 24 languages you can hear the translation spoken aloud. You can also access your translation history even when offline, star your favorite translations and spell out the translation of non-Latin script languages in Latin characters to read it phonetically. The new version of the app is available for free in Apple’s App Store. Read More
Google Translate for iOS adds iPad support
Calendar16 Fri, 06 Jan 2012 03:00:00 UTC +00:00
The Google Translate app (free) has become a universal app, adding support for the iPad. Unfortunately, it appears that the only real change to the app was to scale up the user interface elements to fit the larger screen of the iPad, but based on prior experiences with the app on the iPhone it should be a very useful piece of software. The app does quite an amazing job of translating text between 63 different languages, literally everything from Afrikaans to Yiddish. For 17 of those languages, you don't even have to type in the text -- you can speak it, and Google Translate makes quick work of converting your speech to text and then translating it. For 24 of the languages, the translations can be spoken aloud. Favorite translations and your history can be set up for quick access when the iPad is offline, perfect for setting up a list Read More
Google's Free 64-Language Translator App Comes to the iPad
Calendar16 Thu, 05 Jan 2012 23:30:00 UTC +00:00
Google updated the Google Translate iOS app today adding iPad support. It's the same set of features as the iPhone version, but the iPad is a great place for a free translator. Technophiles are reading more on tablets lately, and a free Google Translate app is a boon for a more literate, global wired society. Google Translate has been available on the iPhone since the mobile Web version launched in 2008. The native app released last year added the voice-to-text feature as well as the spoken translations from Google's voice synthesizer. As one should expect, the translations are never perfect, but they're great for getting the gist. The iPad UI is the slightest bit strange. When you paste text into the box, it scoots up, so the language choice buttons go away. You have to pull it down from a very thin tab to get it back (or hit cancel and Read More
Google Translate Goes Grande On the iPad [Ipad]
Calendar16 Thu, 05 Jan 2012 21:10:21 UTC +00:00
It's been out for almost a year on the iPhone, and longer than that as a web app. Now Google Translate has been enlarged for the iPad. The app can translate between 63 languages via text. Will talk to you in 24, and can understand 17 languages if spoken too. If you're traveling in a far-off land and you want to communicate, you can display your translation in full screen mode. You could hold your iPad up and tell the natives that their country is awesome. Or you could use it to hail a cab. Your choice. [iTunes] Read More
The Top 20 iPhone And iPad Apps of 2011

Editor’s note: Contributor Brad Spirrison is the managing editor of mobile app discovery services Appolicious, AndroidApps.com and AppVee. With this post, he continues an annual tradition of picking the best iOS apps of the year. It’s telling that Apple chose an app that debuted more than 14 months ago, Instagram, as its “iPhone App of the Year” for 2011. This should not imply that there was a shortage of quality and groundbreaking apps released this year. Far from it. From social magazines to music discovery apps to console-quality games that players can hold in the palms of their hands, there are hundreds of new titles in the iTunes App Store that will inform, organize, and entertain virtually anyone who owns an iOS device. As more choices become available to different kinds of consumers, however, it’s difficult to identify the undisputed champions of the app world. We picked 20 of the best Read More
AllThingsD's Ina Fried was in Taipei over the weekend, and she took along both an iPhone 4S and an Android device with Google Translate onboard. What she found is that both of the devices and their accompanying software were very good travel companions. Google Translate (free) is also available for iOS devices, and it's an amazing piece of software. As Fried notes, she was able to ask an electronics dealer what the difference was between two models of Fuji cameras by speaking to the HTC Salsa running Google Translate. The response from the salesperson was a bit confusing -- "Outside" -- but Fried quickly noticed that he was referring to the fact that the cameras were identical except for the external case. Fried ran into one of the unfortunate issues of Siri right now, however, which is the inability to do local searches outside of the U.S. She was able to Read More

Calendar16 Wed, 09 Feb 2011 08:34:52 UTC +00:00
Google's New Translate app for iPhone has all of the features of the web app, plus some significant new additions designed to improve your overall translation experience. The new app accepts voice input for 15 languages, and—just like the web app—you can translate a word or phrase into one of more than 50 languages. For voice input, just press the microphone icon next to the text box and say what you want to translate. Another feature that might come in handy is the ability to easily enlarge the translated text to full-screen size. This way, it’s much easier to read the text on the screen, or show the translation to the person you are communicating with. Just tap on the zoom icon to quickly zoom in. Read More
Google Translate Goes Native
Calendar16 Wed, 09 Feb 2011 07:39:50 UTC +00:00
posted by Trey Trawick on Tuesday, February 8, 2011 at 11:39 pm.   Google is on a roll this week: just a few short days after bringing Gmail’s Priority Inbox feature to mobile, they have created a native Google Translate app for iOS. Previously, only a slightly dumbed down HTML5 web app was available—which never feels quite right compared to a real app. Features include “speak to translate”, where users can use the microphone to enter text, text-to-speech for reading those tricky translations aloud, full-screen mode, and offline support for starred translations. Over 50 languages are supported, and like any other Google product, it is completely free. Read More

Google Translate Comes to the iPhone with Text-to-Speech
Calendar16 Tue, 08 Feb 2011 22:00:47 UTC +00:00
Google today released an official iOS version of its Google Translate app. The application is a free download, and lets you translate more than 50 languages through text-based input, or up to 15 by speaking into your device. The app can also read translated sentences aloud using a synthesized voice in 23 different languages. The app features a minimalist interface with the same barebones design I’ve come to expect from official Google apps, and it works particularly well with Translate, since you’ll probably be using it most quickly while trying to communicate in unfamiliar surroundings. Developers clearly had this scenario in mind when the designed the app’s translated text box, which displays the phrase in a fairly large font. You can even tap an icon to expand the translated phrase to take up the full screen in landscape mode, making it perfect for showing to others. Google Translate also provides the ability to Read More
Google Translate App Hits the iPhone
Calendar16 Tue, 08 Feb 2011 20:36:14 UTC +00:00
by Globe-trotting iPhone users rejoice — the official Google Translate for iPhone app is now available in the App Store. The iPhone app [iTunes link] appears to be much like the existing Android app (launched January 2010) in functionality — allowing users to speak to translate in 15 languages and to translate words and phrases into more than 50 languages. You can also listen to your translations spoken aloud in 23 different languages. One can also zoom in on text to read it more easily, as well — this is a feature that the Android app lacks. This official app basically echoes the web app in functionality, allowing one to view dictionary results for single words, and check out starred translations and history (even when not online). The iPhone app, however, lacks a few features that the Android version boasts: namely SMS translation and the experimental Conversation Mode, which is supposed Read More
Google launches native Google Translate app for iPhone
Calendar16 Tue, 08 Feb 2011 21:20:06 UTC +00:00
By Andrew Wray, Tuesday, Feb 8, 2011 | Google has released Google Translate for iPhone, a native iOS app that allows you to “speak to translate” in 15 different languages, with output support for up to 50 languages. Simply speak into your iPhone and the app will translate your speech into a number of different languages, even reading the text aloud for you: Google Translate was previously available for iPhone but only through a webapp interface. With Google switching to a fully native version this lets users access a few additional features not available in the HTML5 version. It’s pretty fun to use and it would make a great sidekick if you’re traveling to a foreign country where you aren’t familiar with the native language. Give it a try and let us know what you think in the comments below! Read More
Google Translate – Übersetzungs-App mit Spracheingabe
Calendar16 Tue, 08 Feb 2011 19:28:38 UTC +00:00
Read More
Speak to Translate: Google Translate Gets an iPhone App
Calendar16 Tue, 08 Feb 2011 19:30:09 UTC +00:00
Google has had a web-based translation app for several years. But today, it's released an official iPhone app that adds a few more bells and whistles to your ability to talk and translate on the go. You can input a word or phrase for translation by typing the text or by talking into the phone. The new iPhone app accepts voice input from 15 languages, and just like the existing web app, lets you translate that phrase into one of more than 50 languages. You can also listen to your translations spoken out loud in one of 23 different languages, including Arabic, Polish, Portugese, and Hindi. The app uses the same speech synthesizer voices that were introduced in late 2010. The linguaphiles here at ReadWriteWeb were resoundingly skeptical of the recent release of Android's translation app, contending that "Given the wide range of languages, accents and intonations in the world, we Read More
Google Translate for iPhone now in App Store
Calendar16 Tue, 08 Feb 2011 19:21:00 UTC +00:00
Google released a Google Translate Web app for iPhone users back in 2008, but now the Apple crowd has a native Google Translate iPhone app. Available in the App Store now, the free Google Translate app includes speak-to-translate for 15 languages, a full screen mode, and the ability to listen to translations in 23 languages. The iPhone app doesn't have Android's on-the-fly "conversation mode," but it does allow you to quickly zoom up the text size of your translation, so you can easily show it to the person you're trying to communicate with. The ability to play back your translations using the voice synthesizers Google first introduced in the desktop version of Google Translate is also cool. Sure, Google Translate for iPhone is a long time coming, but it's a nice step up from the Web app. Read More

But lately, that approach has been changing, quickly. In just the past few months, we’ve seen apps like Google Voice, Latitude, and Places all launch natively. And today brings another: Google Translate. Google Translate has previously been available on the iPhone via an HTML5 experience since mid 2008. But Read More

Works great, simple interface. For those complaining about copy and paste...press and hold on the translation and it gives you the option to copy, same with the pronunciation part as well.
It's awesome sauce, but...
Pianieplayer 4.0 stars Version: 1.3.0
I would give it five stars but theres one thing that's it's missing.. copy to clipboard. it would be so much more helpful to just copy and paste instead of switch back and fourth between a text message and a translation. like if you want to text something in Greek, you have to look at the translation, and then you have to try to remember the translation once you get to the message app. needs copy to clipboard, people.
Great App
