Has Apple Adjusted the App Store Charting Algorithms?
Calendar16 Mon, 18 Apr 2011 18:10:00 UTC +00:00
Careful watchers of the top charts on the App Store have noticed an interesting trend over the weekend with various apps inexplicably substantially changing position. Previously (and possibly still currently) Apple seemed to use the number of downloads an app had to form both the top free and paid lists. While this method might have made sense originally, gaming these download-only lists has turned into a remarkably profitable enterprise for those that have apps with a large install base which also have a way to push users into downloading other apps. If you've played a freemium game lately that offered some kind of benefit for downloading a completely different game, chances are the developer behind the title you're being incentivized into downloading paid the original developer a bucket full of money for that promotion. For both developers it's a win/win situation, one (often) gets a fat stack of cash while the Read More

Free App Friday: Sharing is Caring
Calendar16 Fri, 21 Jan 2011 22:30:46 UTC +00:00
Posted 01/21/2011 at 2:30pm | by Florence Ion Here at Mac|Life headquarters, we believe that sharing is caring. That's right: every bit of news that we could possibly want our colleagues to be privy to, we shout it out loud from the industrial-sized soapboxes stashed away under our desks. And when we can't physically make proclamations here at the office, we do so with our Macs and iOS devices on the go. In this edition of Free App Friday, we're featuring three apps that'll help you get the word out about whatever it is you've got going on, and keep you in the know about your neighbor's agenda, too. If you're a fan of independent music and homemade dance mixes, SoundCloud is a pretty nifty music service that gives you access to a ton of shared music. The desktop application is available in the Mac App Store and enables you to Read More

Gowalla Version 3 now available for iPhone!
Calendar16 Thu, 09 Dec 2010 15:08:47 UTC +00:00
By Chad Garrett, Thursday, Dec 9, 2010 | Gowalla version 3 in now available in the App Store. This is the most significant update Gowalla has released for iPhone. So what are some of the new features? For starters there is a completely new interface. At fist, I found it a little confusing, but I can navigate OK now. Beyond the interface overhaul, the most exciting new feature has to be notes. You can leave notes for your friends at a location. So, the next time they check in at your favorite restaurant, they will be notified that a note was left for them. The notes feature is cool, but I would have liked to have seen it taken a step further and have public notes. As it is, you can add a Highlight, one of Gowalla’s newer features that was previously available on the Web. Another new feature is the Read More

It would appear as if the Gowalla iPhone app has gotten quite a bit more useful for those looking to check-in to multiple location based services at the same time. The latest update for the Gowalla app brings the version up to 3.0 and is described as being “re-imagined from the ground up.” In reality, they have added a bunch of new features, of which probably the most interesting is the ability to connect your Foursquare and Facebook accounts. In addition you can also now share your location check-ins on Twitter, Foursquare, Facebook Places and Tumblr. Other new features include; And in addition, several items including image uploads, Spot creation and browsing friends have all been improved. Read More
This past March, I came home from SXSW with a problem. The so-called “location war” hadn’t yielded one check-in service to rule them all. In fact, several new ones popped up just at that conference alone. Check-in fatigue set in. Since then, the problem has only gotten worse. Now Facebook has launched itself right smack dab in the middle of the location space with Places. And others like Yelp are still pushing hard there. It’s getting even more out of control. I’m about ready to declare check-in bankruptcy. Or I was, until Gowalla decided to do something bold. The location-based service has decided to fundamentally altered their app to allow you to check-in to not only their service, but also into Facebook’s and even Foursquare’s as well. Yes, they’ve just become compatible with their chief rivals. Gowalla 3.0, launching today for the iPhone, is the biggest change the service has undergone Read More
What's next for 'check-in' apps? - CNN.com
Calendar16 Fri, 27 Aug 2010 00:00:00 UTC +00:00
(CNN) -- Seth Priebatsch was at a burrito joint in Boston recently when a message popped up on his smartphone from an app called SCVNGR. If he opened the foil on the burrito ever so carefully and turned the wrapper into a piece of origami art -- and if he uploaded a picture of his creation to the app, the note said, then he would earn points toward a free burrito. Priebatsch thought: That might be fun. "I made a really weak origami crane, because I'm no origami artist myself," he said, but "it got me closer to unlocking a free burrito, which was cool." SCVNGR, which Priebatsch helped create, is one of the latest apps to build on top of the idea of a "check-in," that emerging term some tech-savvy people use to describe the act of using a GPS-enabled smartphone to share their whereabouts with friends. Increasingly, app developers Read More
Facebook “Places” An Update in Their iPhone App
Calendar16 Thu, 19 Aug 2010 14:57:49 UTC +00:00
Late Wednesday evening, Facebook added a location check-in feature to their hugely popular iPhone app. “Places” is the official title, and the social media kingpin is expected to be the eventual champion of such (GPS) location based utilities. Similar applications allow you to publicly announce your whereabouts, with Gowalla and Foursquare among the most popular. At least they were. The Washington Post is among the seemingly endless sources that report once a user “Checks In”, their location is broadcasted on both their personal and public feed. Security adjustments can be made within your profile to change just how known your want your movements to be. This seems certain to be a dagger to Foursquare and company, but Facebook’s approach doesn’t have the add-ons that other apps have. In Foursquare, you’re awarded various badges and even mayorships based on the frequency and uniqueness of your visits. Places seems to simply announce your position Read More
The 30 Best iPhone Apps So Far This Year
Calendar16 Sat, 07 Aug 2010 18:12:54 UTC +00:00
Editor’s note: This guest post is written by Alex Ahlund, the former CEO and founder of AppVee and AndroidApps, which were acquired by mobile application directory Appolicious. About this time last year, he gave us his picks of the best iPhone apps of 2009 up until then, so we thought we’d make it an annual tradition. I’ve been involved in the iPhone app industry since it first began in 2008 and I have to say that it has come a long way. I’ve seen it grow from a meager launch of 500 applications in the App Store to currently over 225,000. In only two years, the industry has matured at hyperspeed. It spawned an entire ecosystem to support it from a multitude of news and editorial resources to developer engines, promotional services and ancillary niches. With over five billion app downloads and a billion dollars at stake, it’s no surprise that Read More

By Allyson Kazmucha, Wednesday, Jul 7, 2010 | As you all know, we’ve been watching the App Store for iOS4 compatible updates. We’ve found a few we think are worthy of a postup, and as normal, if you guys find anything especially awesome, feel free to leave it in a comment or send it to me in an e-mail (ally (dot) kazmucha (at) tipb (dot) com) and if we think it’s awesome too, we’ll include it in our next roundup! Hit the jump to see what we found lurking in the App Store this time! Bing is relatively new to the search game, but it’s definitely holding it’s own. As far as search engines go, I’m a fan of how Bing is organized and how it now interacts with your social networks. Bing is now updated for iOS4 support (mainly multitasking). Google mobile search now includes iPhone apps
Calendar16 Thu, 03 Jun 2010 20:00:00 UTC +00:00
Google announced a new feature this week that lists apps in mobile search results. When searching for an app by name from your iPhone (it works with Android too, naturally), the top result is a link to the app's home in the App Store. In addition to the link, you get information like rating, publisher and price. That's the idea, at least. I got limited results in my own testing. "Shazam Download" produced the expected result, but searching for Twitterrific didn't. I tried adding "download," "app," "iPhone," and other qualifiers to no avail. Likewise, searching "Bank of America App" worked, but variations on "Gowalla" did not. Google notes that "The mobile app results will only be returned when relevant, well-rated apps are found," but who knows what that actually means. This feature is limited to the USA for now, but Google promises that it's in the works for other countries. [Via Read More
Gowalla for iPhone – App Review
Calendar16 Tue, 11 May 2010 18:58:29 UTC +00:00
By Chad Garrett, Tuesday, May 11, 2010 | Gowalla for iPhone is a social app from some fine folks in Austin, TX that allows you to check-in to locations, see where your friends are checking-in, collect items and complete trips. For those of you not familiar with the whole “check-in” craze, the idea is you travel around town, land at a “spot” such as the movie theater, gas station or restaurant, and then tap the Check-in button. When you do this a couple things happen: You can… There are some great social aspects to Gowalla, but let’s first talk about items. After installing Gowalla on the iPhone, you receive three items. You can keep and cheris these items in a vault, never to be used, or you can swap for other items at Spots when you check in. You are also randomly given items when you check into locations. Foursquare y Gowala: Jugando con la localización
Calendar16 Tue, 11 May 2010 11:45:48 UTC +00:00
Everyone watching or reading this review knows that social media has a large presence on the internet and in most ways has become the way we find news or things that interest us. With services like Facebook, Foursquare, Twitter, and more, there are hundreds of ways to find places, news, friends and other interesting things. Gowalla is yet another service looking to change the way we use our community and wants to give users an experience that makes it fun to visit new areas. If any of you are familar with the service called Foursquare, you will immediately recognize the premise of this app. After creating an account, users will then "Check In" to different locations they visit throughout their weeknights and weekends. Checking in to a location will earn different stamps for a users passport. Various trips can also be completed that have been created for users. These trips have Read More

As conference season is upon us (including SXSW, of course), I began thinking about all the things one might need to survive and stay connected with a busy schedule of travel and networking. Personally, I’m headed to San Diego to attend both SourceCon and the ERE Spring Expo. Then I remembered that I’m the proud owner of an iPhone, and that almost everything I’ll need to make it through is easily accessible and at the tip of my fingers. Here are some of the apps which I believe will help you navigate, stay connected, and meet new friends when you attend a conference. Regular readers will know my love for all things location. In particular, these check-in location-based services fascinate me, mainly because I see them as a bridge between social networks as we’ve known it, and actual social interaction in the real world. Foursquare has been my app of choice over the past year (it launched almost exactly a year ago at SXSW). But the latest version of Gowalla has me thinking about switching sides. At the very least, I’ll be using both at all times now. Gowalla version 2.0 for the iPhone just hit the App Store today. With it, you’ll notice a few different things. First and foremost, the overall look has been updated from a sort of Army green, to a more subtle light green that is much easier on the eyes. More significantly, the toolbar has been reworked so that now social activity is front and center when you Read More
Gowalla And Foursquare Receive Facelifts And Features
Calendar16 Wed, 10 Mar 2010 21:27:45 UTC +00:00
We talked about Loopt‘s update first thing this morning and yet, surprisingly, its update still hasn’t actually hit the App Store yet allowing Gowalla and Foursquare to beat them to the punch. Gowalla v2.0 first and foremost features a new design that is said to be more readable and usable than ever.  You are also now allowed to upload photos after checking in and browse photos from friends, and checkins can now be commented on.  Speaking of checkins, you are now able to come back and add checkin messages for instances where you have skipped typing a checkin message because you just didn’t have enough time. Other Gowalla 2.0 features include: Gowalla‘s competition, Foursquare, also received a bit of a facelift today in v1.7, featuring quite a bit more color and a lot less black.  But unlike Gowalla, the rest of Foursquare‘s additions are fairly minimal, only including faster and more Read More
Gowalla announces shared trips

There's a growing battle lately on the App Store over "check-in" apps -- Foursquare, Gowalla, and MyTown have all seen big gains in users lately (and a few other contenders have been roaming the periphery), and it looks like we're starting to see some innovation in the mix. Gowalla recently updated their free app [iTunes link], and introduced a new feature called Shared Trips. These are more or less tours (or a line of check-ins at different places around a given city), but they can feature all kinds of things: a set of bars, interesting buildings to see, the old bookstore/coffeeshop run, or any other ideas Gowalla users have. Trips can be shared and rated, and you'll be able to browse through the most popular trips and even earn badges in the app for creating or going on a popular trip. The new version also adds bookmarks, which will let you Read More

Gowalla Ups Its Game And Hints At Future Business Models
Calendar16 Tue, 24 Nov 2009 08:34:50 UTC +00:00
For some time now, it has seemed like Foursquare was the only game in town. I mean “game” literally, as of the major location-based services, Foursquare seemed to be the only one really emphasizing gaming elements. But now Gowalla is starting to emphasize it more. To be fair, Gowalla has had a sort of sub-game based around the dropping and picking up of items (basically, virtual goods) since the beginning. But in the latest build of its iPhone app which hit the App Store today, version 1.3, there are some new gaming aspects. The first is that items now have histories attached to them. This allows you to see who has had an item before you in a city. Looking over some of my items now, it’s actually pretty interesting to see that I know some people who have some of them before me. While at first the idea behind including Read More

Foursquare is the location-based iPhone app getting a lot of love in the press (and from VCs) these days. And while there is no shortage of location social networking apps in the App Store, Foursquare works well on the platform because it’s based on the active checking-in to venues, which is perfect since the iPhone doesn’t allow apps to run in the background (though Loopt has a workaround). While Brightkite has also long been in this space, it’s been a while since any new viable competitors have come along. But we recently got two more: Gowalla and Going. Going Going, which is an app made by AOL’s Going.com site, has one great feature going (see what I did there) for it. When you check in to a place you can set a “How is it right now?” slider to tell your friends either “Don’t Come”, “Eh”, or “Get Here Now” (or Read More

I like it
jaxfroggie 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.3
I like it. Is there any way for the mods to put up spots in other citys? That might get people useing it more. I just added the first spot in my state so if your in milwaukee wi check it out I will put up more.
Best virtual geocaching app I've ever used
Zephyr Starfields 4.0 stars Version: 1.0.3
I immediately took a liking to Gowalla's interface. It's clean, well-designed, and gorgeous. But where it really shines is in its purpose. Geocaching and letterboxing can be a hassle with the iPhone. Until recently, few-to-no apps offered access to any of the major geocaching databases and provided no real incentive for actually going out and finding the locations. Gowalla, on the other hand, lets you visit real locations, see them on a map, check your distance, and then actually GET something for going there: a virtual something, but something nonetheless.
This App Rules My Face!!!

Everyone get it!!! Don't be daft!
Awesome, add these features
MusicStyle 4.0 stars Version: 1.0.3
Awesome app (living in Kansas City). But the deva should add these features: 1. Ability for users to add trips around cities and for those trips to be rated by people who have completed xx% of the trip. 2. User-created notes/treasures (pictures etc...) left at various locations 3. Optional time limits to hit all the featured places with custom difficulties. 4. Genre based locations, everwhere that is historical, artistic, resturaunt, bar etc... Add these features and it gets 6+ stars
Amazing!
Ry31689 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.3
Download! Needs a broader userbase.. Amazing idea otherwise :D
Pretty cool so far
sd913 4.0 stars Version: 1.0.3
Been messing around with this for a bit and it's pretty cool! However the location finding takes a while and when it does find you there is no way to drag to your exact location if the gps is off. Also - how do you add a profile pict to your "character"? The game reminds me of Packrat on Facebook just mobile, which I like. I look forward to updates - I'm off to find more hidden surprises!
One city wonder

Must be nice if you live in the few cities it works in, good idea but does nothing for 98% of America.
Most Used App on IPhone!
Andrew Andrew 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.4
So much fun, but beware! You'll be on Gowalla so much, the iPhone battery life might suffer. It really is a great and beautiful App and will only get better with time. Start claiming places now before you'll be saying " There goes the Neighborhood!" Can we give 6 stars?
Great time
Discboomer 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.4
I lost myself with this app today . I totally vanished into a world of " find the next spot " much like a fog looking for a nice place to poo. Top notch , can't wait to c the updates. Keep it up!

You know when you have finished up all those emails and shot all those text messages back to your friends and checked the weather and now you have nothing to do on your iPhone? Well, you have plenty of fun ahead. Gowalla! I love playing this game. If you are constantly trying new places and visiting odd spots, you are an ideal candidate for creating Gowalla spots. And if you need to get out more often, Gowalla is a great excuse to discover something new. I recommend this game to many friends. It is a blast!
What a fun app!
T in Chi-town 4.0 stars Version: 1.0.4
Having fun with the app. Still a ciuple of bugs, but the team at Gowalla is so incredibly helpful in getting them worked out, it doesn't truly present any problems. Gets you out enjoying your city and discovering new things.
What a great app
ToddInAustin 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.4
This is easily my most used iPhone app. It fully takes advantage of the 3G iPhone's location services to provide a fun game. Create a spot in your town at your favorite restaurants, parks, and monuments. Collect a handsome looking icon for checking in at your spots, or the spots that others have made. I use this constantly, it's always fun to see what other spots people have created. And the people at Alamofire are really trying to build an inclusive community around this game, they are very open and friendly.
Novelty wore off
Got bored 1.0 stars Version: 1.0.4
Once you collect most of the icons there isn't much motivation to play. You have to be one of the first four to get you name in the founders list at a spot, and it's not uncommon for good spots to fill up fast. And to top it all off, people keep adding fast food spots to the game. Really? Another 10 Starbucks flagged? Great. And even after the last update that supposedly fixed stability issues, the app is still "crashtastic".
Gowalla good needs some work

Gowalla will take you on a journey like you've never experienced. You will become addicted in a matter of days. Just try it! It's completely free, and it's one of the very best iPhone games that has been made yet. Take my word for it, you'll love this game.
Amazing App
Megnix10 5.0 stars Version: 1.1

Crashes on Registration
ekboost 1.0 stars Version: 1.1
Consistently crashes on registration even when I restart the phone. Not really a great introduction to the service.
Great app!
eskimob 5.0 stars Version: 1.1
Incredible replay value. Super fun to play in groups. Needs more trips but still fun to just rack up stamps and vault good items. Needs the ability to vault stuff from inside the app! And maybe also explain the reasoning behind vaulting...
So far, so fun!
DrMatt 5.0 stars Version: 1.1
Although this game seems to be just getting off the ground, it's fun! It's a bit easier than geocaching, but all you have to carry around is your iPhone for Gowalla. Definately fun! Get it and participate!
Wonderful

Sam Soffes 5.0 stars Version: 1.1

Awesome app, made better with 1.2
Ryan Graves 5.0 stars Version: 1.2.0
I'm really impressed with how nice the 1.2 update looks and works. This could have easily qualified as a 2.0 upgrade simply because of all the changes and enhancements. Loving the facebook/twitter integration!
Fun!
Dave player 5.0 stars Version: 1.2.0
Fun game, beautiful app, and happy devs.
Where are you going? Where have you been? Get out and Gowalla!
Frideswide1 5.0 stars Version: 1.2.0
Gowalla 1.2.0 is a ramped up version of a great social networking/travel/game app. The new version effectively connects the user with Twitter and FB friends in real time, allowing for immediate interaction. The individualized passport includes stamps to keep track of places visited, achievement pins and a stash of awesome items to drop at visited spots or to vault ~ soooo collectible! In the past few months this user has traveled and created spots in several states and the UK ~ it is fascinating to see others discover and check in to the same spots (and to discover and check in to spots created by others). Gowalla is a great way to stay in touch with friends and the game aspect of the app is a challenge. Gowalla: not just an app ~ a lifestyle.
Gowalla-crazy for this app!
IreneInSF 5.0 stars Version: 1.1
I love this app! It's one of the top apps used on my phone. I love finding hidden gems to create spots and discovering those created by other players. It's even more fun playing with friends. The Gowalla community is awesome!

Super Fun!
debidoodle 5.0 stars Version: 1.2.0
I'm having a great time with this. My friends and I are seeing who can get the most spots checked in. A lot of fun and only getting better!
Groundbreaking
dguy 5.0 stars Version: 1.2.0
This makes having an iPhone a lot more fun. It combines GPS, social networking, beautiful icons and a scavenger hunt all in one. It's a fun way to find interesting spots nearby. People can leave mini-reviews of the spots too so you know what to expect. You can create "new spots" of your favorite stops or cool places to visit. Other people can check in those spots and trade a stamp. It's been great fun so far. Looking forward to watching Gowalla grow!
