Here's a sale that we definitely didn't expect to see so soon. Rockstar's Grand Theft Auto 3 and Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars have both dropped to a dollar. This sale just went into effect, and strangely enough it seems that the iPhone-specific version of Chinatown Wars is still $9.99. It doesn't make much sense for Rockstar to only drop the price of the HD version, so maybe check back in a little bit to see if the price of the small screen version drops as well. (We'll update this post if/when it does.) We've reviewed both GTA3 as well as Chinatown Wars. We loved both games, as they provide a level of depth seldom seen on the App Store. They both control about as well as you'd expect a console game mapped to virtual controls to play, which in my opinion is totally workable. Seriously, don't miss these games while Read More

Surprise! , which saw a release this December 14 at $4.99, is now just $2.99 in celebration of the holidays. If you were one of those day-one guys saying he'd wait until a price drop before taking the plunge... well, here you go. This is part of a larger Rockstar holiday sale, by the way. Until the after New Years, you can also grab the studio's decidedly more mobile-friendly Grand Theft Auto joint, , at $5.99 instead of its usual $9.99. Beaterator, a music creation game, is also on sale. It's now $1.99 rather than its everyday $2.99. Deals! Since Grand Theft Auto 3 is so fresh and all, swing by our review if you're on the fence. Spoiler: it's GTA 3 -- a fun, exciting open-world game that brimming with all the things we take for granted in a GTA -- but with virtual controls.   #3   Today, 07:55 AM Read More

'9mm' Review – The App Store Needs More Bullet Time
Calendar16 Mon, 18 Jul 2011 18:39:46 UTC +00:00
The latest third person shooter from Gameloft is named 9mm [$6.99] and comes with an age restriction (17+) on the App Store for containing sexual content, realistic violence, frequent alcohol and drug use references, profanity and suggestive themes. It's gritty and naughty, with drug-dealers, crooked cops, guns, strippers and narrated dialog sprinkled generously with the F-bomb. That's probably enough reasons for some of you to buy it immediately. Sometimes it's fun to play something with dark themes, but if you object to swear-words or prefer pretty rainbows and ponies, this is not the game for you. In the single player campaign, you control John "Loose" Kannon (*groan*), a corrupt narcotics detective, who kills a drug lord's brother and steals millions in cash. This sparks a bullet-fueled rampage as you take down gang members, while trying to avoid being capped yourself. At first glance this game resembles Grand Theft Auto [$9.99], or Read More
Want to know why you’re not seeing a lot of Take-Two label games on the App Store? That answer resides in a new Forbes interview with CEO Strauss Zelnick. When the conversation turned towards iPad and iPod games, the business-first-man whipped out the phrase “economically meaningful.” When used in a negative light like he did in the talk, it means, “not making the kind of money we want.” In short: the cold reality of business is why. “We’ve tried a bunch a things. We tried Chinatown Wars [$9.99 / HD] for the iPhone, and we’re thrilled that we did it, and it was creatively successful. At the price point for which we can sell on the iPhone, it is not going to be economically meaningful,” he said. To keep this in focus, Chinatown Wars started out as a Rockstar Leeds Nintendo DS project. The App Store version is a port with Read More
Develop, a super industry publication that focuses mainly on development topics and inside baseball, has just released its annual “Develop 100” article, a listing that ranks the top 100 game developers of the year. Normally, we wouldn’t cover this kind of thing, but 2011’s list is remarkable in that it ranks several smartphone-focused studios at the tiptop of the gargantuan list brimming with behemoth houses with hundreds of staffers. If you take a gander, you’ll see that 2D Boy, the creator of World of Goo [$2.99 / HD], is sitting at number two. Zepto Lab, the creator of Cut the Rope [$.99 / HD] sits at number three just below God of War developers SCE Santa Monica, while Media Vision, The Coding Monkeys, 1337 Game Design, and Rockstar Leeds round out the rest of the top ten. Respectively, these houses built Chaos Rings [$12.99 / HD], Carcassonne [$9.99], Dark Nebula [$.99], Read More
Posted 04/07/2011 at 9:32am | by Andrew Groen The Gangstar series was one of the App Store's earliest gaming hits. It was essentially the progenitor of Gameloft's highly successful me-too let's-copy-this-popular-game approach to iPhone design. Regardless of where its inspiration came from, it's still a very high quality 3D action series. Now we have word that Gangstar: Miami Vindication [iTunes Link] is on sale for a puny 99 cent sale. This iteration wasn't quite as highly lauded as the first (likely because the technology was just so breathtaking in the first game) but it provided more of the same GTA-aping formula that Gameloft supplied in Gangstar: West Coast Hustle [iTunes Link]. The cheap 99 cent figure is a very good deal for either of these games. You play as a farm-boy from the Miami panhandle who comes to the big city to save his little brother. That's really all you need Read More

By George Lim, Saturday, Feb 5, 2011 | The folks from Firemint have reduced the price on all titles from their hit Real Racing Series and have them on sale until Monday 14th February. Rockstar Games have also slashed the price of their hit iOS title GTA Chinatown Wars, in celebration of Chinese New Year, until Sunday 6th February (11:59pm ET) Go enjoy some great titles while their on sale, before they go back up in price! If you’re after an App Store bargain this weekend, then here are a few which certainly fit the bill! Firemint have reduced their three Real Racing games to far more manangeable prices, and are certainly worth a go thanks to their excellent graphics and decent control system. Continuing the automotive theme is Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars, which gets a 50% reduction to celebrate the Chinese New Year.  Both the iPhone and the iPad version are reduced, and you’ve got until Sunday to grab either one for this price. Joining the above titles on sale this weekend are several Adult Swim titles, all of which have been reduced to $0.99/£0.59, including: Next up we have Capcom’s Devil May Cry 4 Refrain, which has been treated to a special limited time discount: If photography apps are your thing, then take a look at TrueHDR.  The app has been updated to version 2.2 Read More

For a limited time, Rockstar Games is offering their iOS versions of Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars at a 50% discount from the regular price of $9.99 to celebrate the Chinese New Year. GTA: Chinatown Wars was originally released for the Nintendo DS in March of 2009, and featured all of the essential components of a full-blown console GTA game but with toned down visuals and presented from a bird’s-eye view rather than the traditional third-person view. The title was a critical success, and later that year was ported over to the Sony PSP with greatly enhanced visuals. In January of 2010, the entire game made its way onto the App Store for the iPhone and iPod touch. The iOS version falls somewhere in the middle of its portable console cousins, with visuals that are markedly improved over the DS version but fall a bit short when compared to the PSP Read More

Today marks the Chinese New Year and what better way to celebrate than with riding fast cars, beating up thugs, and outrunning the cops in Chinatown? There is no better way and Rockstar Games knows that, that’s why they decided to mark down Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars for the iPhone and iPad. If you’re new to the Grand Theft Auto scene, then this would be a great time for you to plunk down $5 for either version of the game, although I prefer the iPad as its big screen can make playing the game a little easier. Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars was a steal at its original price of $10, and now that its been marked down to $5 for the Chinese new Year, it should be a must buy. The 50% off sale is going on right now until 2/16/11 at midnight EST. I don’t see how you Read More

'Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars' Price Gets Slashed
Calendar16 Wed, 10 Nov 2010 16:05:48 UTC +00:00
High cost has always been the barrier of entry for some when it comes to Rockstar Games' Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars [$6.99, Lite], as the iPhone and iPad versions of the top-down GTA have been comparatively pricey since the game's launch in 2009. This is not the case for a limited time, at least, as Rockstar has hacked the price of the app to $6.99 (which is cost-equivalent to a bag of Doritos, I think). Is it a good buy? Hell yeah. My main squeeze Eli Hodapp said in his review of that game from this January that GTA: Chinatown Wars is "by far the best" open-world crime game available on iOS and shouldn't be passed up despite a few bad bits of UI, and some movement issues. GTA: Chinatown Wars is the kind of huge, colorful, and in-depth game that makes up for what problems -- however big or Read More
A little more than a month ago, iPhone giant Gameloft first announced a sequel to Gangstar: West Coast Hustle [$4.99 / Free / HD], an open-world crime game which we liked quite a bit in our review despite a few disappointments. Gangstar: Miami Vindication [$6.99] was released this evening, and while several of our annoyances from the first have been tweaked or massaged to be less problematic, there's still a few things keeping Miami Vindication from being our favorite thug simulator. Much like the original, Gangstar: Miami Vindication features a full city to explore, a wide variety of vehicles to steal, weapons ranging from baseball bats to flame throwers, and a heap of missions to complete. (75 to be exact.) The game plays exactly how you'd expect it to play if you've ever played a Grand Theft Auto or similar type of open world crime game. You can play through the Read More

Open world crime games have been incredibly popular for years now, so it wasn't much of a surprise to see Gameloft release Gangstar: West Coast Hustle [$4.99 / Free / HD] which we liked quite a bit in our review. Following the success of Gangstar, Rockstar threw its hat in to the ring with Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars [$9.99 / Free / HD] which really upped the ante with a real Grand Theft Auto experience with all the depth and complexity that players have come to expect of the series. It's going to be interesting to see what Gameloft includes in the Gangstar sequel to one-up Rockstar, but the good news is we won't have to wait much longer as Miami Vindication is set to be released on the 23rd. If you're like us and are looking forward to stealing virtual cars on the streets of Gameloft's version of Miami, Read More

Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars [$9.99 / Free] hit the App Store in late January of this year and we absolutely loved it in our review. Prior to its release, there were quite a few good Grand Theft Auto-like games, but none ever really approached the depth and complexity of a true Rockstar game. Chinatown Wars blew everything out of the water with a full Grand Theft Auto experience, complete with tons of missions to complete, a ridiculous amount of cars to steal, and even touchscreen based mini-games for various in-game tasks. Chinatown Wars worked fine on the iPad, but like so many games with controls designed and optimized for play on the iPhone, it definitely needed some tweaking. Also, pixel doubling wasn't very kind on the game's graphics. Rockstar responded by releasing Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars HD [$9.99] which is the same game from a content perspective, with completely Read More

So You Just Got an iPhone 4 – An App Store Gaming Guide
Calendar16 Thu, 24 Jun 2010 08:20:31 UTC +00:00
If you're one of the lucky ones you managed to secure themselves an iPhone 4 today (or even the past two days if you're really lucky) you've no doubt marveled at how thin it is, how crisp the Retina Display is, and maybe you've even found someone else to do a FaceTime call with... but what about loading it up with some games? Since we haven't gotten our own iPhone 4's yet, we haven't really been able to put together a "games that are really awesome on the iPhone 4" listing, but I figured we'd start out by compiling a list of some of our favorite games in the App Store. If you think this looks a lot like our 2009 Buyer's Guide, that's because it does. However, we've updated the list with some of our recent favorites and kept some of the old ones. Posted 06/17/2010 at 12:07pm | by Florence Ion With this week's E3 news about Nintendo's new offerings--like the 3DS and the rejuvenation of a plethora of popular titles from the Nintendo 64--iPhone and iPod touch users might be asking themselves if it's time to go back to console gaming. And while most mobile iDevice users probably have an Xbox 360 or Playstation 3 collecting dust somewhere in the house, it's not guaranteed that all of them have had a chance to play with the Nintendo DS. With the knowledge that Nintendo may never bring their popular Mario and Zelda titles to the App Store, we scoped out 13 Nintendo DS games that have equal or better equivalents in the App Store to squelch some of your handheld envy. Plus, games sold in the App Store are so much more affordable. Read on for a list of wonderful game titles that will Read More
'Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars' Coming to iPad
Calendar16 Wed, 09 Jun 2010 17:00:20 UTC +00:00
While we're busy stuffing our faces with Moons Over My Hammies at WWDC, IGN is listening in on Take-Two financial calls where they revealed an interesting tidbit for any current or potential iPad owner: Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars is making its way to the big screen. Unfortunately, there aren't any details to be had currently aside from the mention that it will be available later this month. We thought the iPhone version of the game was great in our review, and actually, GTA:CW is a game that looks quite good even running at the 2X mode on the iPad. It will be interesting to see what if any improvements Rockstar adds to the iPad version of the game aside from running at the native 1024x768 resolution, which might be reason enough for fans of the series to potentially re-buy the game anyway. Needless to say, we'll take a close look Read More

Company: Rockstar Games Price: $10 Compatible: iPhone, iPhone 3G/3GS, iPod touch, iPod touch 2G/3G Editor-in-Chief, iLounge Published: Monday, January 18, 2010 Category: Games - iPad, iPhone + iPod To the extent that Rockstar Games' Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars ($10) is an unusually complete handheld console-gaming experience, ported generally with skill to Apple's iPhone and iPod touch devices, you might stop reading right now and just go straight to the App Store's "Buy App" button -- if you're a GTA fan, particularly of the original top-down titles in the series, Chinatown Wars is a must-see release. Yet for everyone else, it's still worth discussing what Rockstar did right and wrong in this game, which will satisfy some players more than others, and surely isn't right for all audiences, of course due more to its content than its gameplay. F is for Falling asleep while this particular game loads. It’s also for falling from 40,000 feet and forcing your little skydiver through flocks of birds, over hot air balloons, and past the  deadly rotors of passing planes, for as long as you can before you meet your inevitable death. But let’s just get back to the first thing I said: this $0.99 title, which feels a bit like Doodle Jump played I’m reverse, takes a whopping 12 seconds to load. Given that Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars can load up in three seconds flat, I’m really not sure why this game takes so long to get into. I’m giving the developer the benefit of the doubt here and am assuming that the long load time will be addressed in a timely fashion (soon, please!). Otherwise, I don’t really see too many people playing this title more than once. I think Read More

We've already seen how updated versions of N.O.V.A. and Need for Speed: Shift will take advantage of the iPad, but it got us thinking -- how might some of the other best-selling or beloved iPhone games use the iPad's updated features to enhance the existing experience? Here's our list of 25 games we'd love to see enhanced for the iPad, but if you have your own dream app upgrade in mind, be sure to let us know in the comments! We’ve had our fair share of GTA-like games in the past but nothing says enough is enough than an actual GTA game gracing our devices. It first appeared on the DS, but the iPhone is its natural home. and Payback are both good games at their time of release. GTA:CW however proves it’s worthy of the “GTA” title attached to its name by delivering the best action-mission oriented game our platform has ever seen. And oh, we can finally say, Rockstar has arrived! Presentation Those expecting 3D first person graphics like will be disappointed. HOWEVER, the game’s dynamic semi 3D/2.5 camera angles and pans make this the best for this iPhone genre. The game’s design remains intact from the DS version though the word intact hardly classifies the improvements Rockstar made to the game. One can argue that the PSP’s screen makes GTA:CW grainy, and the DS’ screen a tad bit Read More

The Grand Theft Auto series has been around for ages and it seems with each new platform a new game is sure to follow. Chinatown Wars was originally released for the Nintendo DS and has been ported over for mass consumption on the iPhone and iPod Touch. But this game isn't just another poorly transitioned copy. The iPhone version is customized to fit perfectly with the touch interface. The app features the signature lifestyle of depravity one would come to expect from a GTA game. There is plenty of foul language and highly mature themes which makes this game extremely inappropriate for younger children. The controls of the game handle much like the various clones of the genre that can be found in the appstore. There are 3 buttons that change based on your context in the game. The game features a surprising amount of detail with subtle humor and plenty Read More
In the wake of Rockstar's Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars [App Store] our forums have been host to a great discussion surrounding the game, and something that has been popping up quite a bit of debating the merits of each of the different platforms that Chinatown Wars is available for. The iPhone currently holds the advantage when it comes to pricing, but without real physical controls or good targeting system for fighting, both the Nintendo DS and Sony PSP versions hold their own in this battle. The DS obviously lags behind in the graphical department, but makes up for it with the second dedicated screen for navigation and stylus mini-games-- All of which feel much more immersive than the button mashing alternative on the PSP. In regards to whether the PSP or iPhone is host to better graphics, it really seems to be a toss up. The textures in the PSP Read More

Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars carjacks the App Store

Finally, GTA makes its iPhone debut. Note to parents: Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars for iPhone and iPod Touch is a crude, violent, decidedly R-rated game. So don't let the kids catch you playing it, OK? Actually, it's more likely you'll catch them. Chinatown Wars ranks among the top-rated and most popular titles ever for both Nintendo DS and Sony PlayStation Portable, and its iPhone counterpart is sure to enjoy similar success. For those unfamiliar with GTA games, Chinatown Wars plays like an interactive John Woo movie. As the son of a murdered gang boss, you must complete various missions on the sprawling, ultra-violent streets of Liberty City. Most of these involve driving from one place to another, often while evading police pursuit. But there's also on-foot gunplay, fistfights, and other mayhem. A profanity-laden plot weaves its way through the game, as does a rap-heavy soundtrack. In short, Chinatown Wars is Read More

Back in 1997 when the first Grand Theft Auto hit the PC, I doubt anyone at Rockstar (known as DMA Design at the time) expected it to spawn a series that would span ten different games and four expansions over the next thirteen years. Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars [App Store] for the iPhone is an excellent adaptation of a game previously only available on the Nintendo DS and Sony PSP. These prior versions of the game were met with universal acclaim, and according to Metacritic.com Chinatown Wars for the DS holds the title of the highest rated game available for the platform. On the PSP, Chinatown Wars is a close second, beaten only by God of War: Chains of Olympus by a single point. The recently released iPhone Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars seems to be a hybrid of both the DS and PSP versions, with graphical quality that lies Read More
Earlier this morning, Rockstar released Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars for the iPhone.  Seeing as I own the game on both the Nintendo DS & PSP, I knew I had to dive into the iPhone version as soon as it came out. The first thing Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars for the iPhone impressed me was by how beautiful the game was.  Its graphics are definitely a step above the Nintendo DS version, but not quite as detailed as the PSP version.  Regardless of the comparisons, the iPhone version of GTA: CW is still a feast for the eyes.  Compared to most other iPhone games available on the App Store, GTA: CW is one of the best looking games and it performs flawlessly on my slower . As is expected, all of the controls are located on-screen.  Depending on what your character is doing, those controls will change on the fly. Read More

With ninja-like stealth, Rockstar Games quietly released Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars in the U.S. [App Store, $9.99]. The game puts you in control of Huang Lee, the son of a Triad gang boss. After your father was murdered and driven off the side of a pier, it’s your job to get back the family heirloom— an ancient sword— and deliver it to your uncle to ensure that control over the Triad gang stays within the family. Gameplay is much like what you would expect; lots of swearing. You control Huang using on-screen joysticks and buttons. Your headquarters is your apartment, which has a “Fruit” computer on which you check your email, and a garage for your car. You also have a full GPS system with a full map of Liberty City. It’s now safe to say that Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars has made its debut on all three major portable gaming platforms: DS, PSP, and now the iDevice. Though it’s unexpected, we iDevice gamers are a happy, lucky lot. Hopefully, Rockstar won’t pull an Assassin’s Creed II: Discovery scenario and yank the game from the App Store after too few short hours. Rockstar Games, Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars – $9.99 Piccies and more fun after the gap: Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars appears to be a close port of the DS version. Having on-screen buttons and a digital analog stick, Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars will feel and handle much differently, control-wise, than on the other gaming platforms. The mini-games that appeared on the DS are all here, and have been implemented to fit the iDevice screen. Other gameplay aspects such as the drug trade (which plays a crucial role in Read More
GTA: Chinatown Wars is now on iPhone [iPhone Applications]

GTA: Chinatown Wars has come to the iPhone and is now present on all of the major mobile gaming platforms. The game originally debuted on the Nintendo DS, then hi-jacked the PSP, and it’s now a $9.99 premium title on the App Store — available right now. Unlike the most recent Grand Theft Auto titles, Chinatown Wars focuses on old-school GTA gameplay, so you don’t see the world from a 3rd-person perspective, but rather an isometric top-down view. This might make it more difficult to pull off fast driving sequences and shoot-outs, but it also sounds like it might be a lot easier to navigate on a platform where every button takes up some screen space. You’ll be doing a lot of carjacking, ramming, and shooting in the game, so the control scheme is very important. The game is made by Rockstar (no copycats here), and I’d expect all of the colourful Read More
Grand Theft Auto Drops on iPhone for $9.99

by Grand Theft Auto IV was the biggest game launch of all time (or it was until Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 hit the shelves, anyway), and now you can get an approximation of that GTA experience on your iPhone or iPod touch with [iTunes link]. The game is a direct port from the Nintendo DS and Sony PSP, and throwback to the top-down perspective of the first two GTA games. It’s especially notable that the game costs $9.99. That’s a little bit steep for an iPhone game, but it’s much cheaper than the game was on the DS or PSP, where it debuted at $34.99 and $39.99, respectively. The touchscreen controls work well and the level of graphical quality lands between that of the Nintendo DS and PSP versions. The reception has been positive so far. As we’re writing this, the game has 40 ratings and an average of Read More
By Jeremy Sikora, Monday, Jan 18, 2010 | After a bit of a delay, GTA has finally made it’s way into the App Store with it’s guns blazing. Back in September we told you Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars [iTunes Link - $9.99] was coming to the iPhone and now it is finally here. While we have not had a chance to give it a try just yet, Touch Arcade has taken a spin in Liberty City and they have come away quite impressed. General consensus is that this game is a must have for any GTA fan. Check out the video after the break! Read More
Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars Releases on the iPhone

Late last summer, Rockstar announced it was bringing Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars to the iPhone / iPod Touch platform.  Originally, Rockstar Games had planned to release the game in Fall 2009, but they quietly pushed back the release date. Today, Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars can finally be downloaded through the App Store for $9.99.  When you consider the Nintendo DS version costs $19.99, and the PSP costs $29.99, the you’ll see how much of a bargain this price point is for the title.  If that wasn’t enough to sell you on the game, its been critically acclaimed by almost everyone in the press. Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars ($9.99) [iTunes Link] Daniel is a Jersey boy, born and raised. He currently lives in the Northern NJ area, close to New York City. Rockstar have finally released the highly anticpated GTA: China Town Wars for iPhone and iPod Touch. Huang is a spoiled rich kid who expects everything to run smoothly, but his trip does not go exactly as planned. After being robbed and left to die, he will search for honor, riches and Read More

Read More
The iPhone's got its first GTA title, and it looks pretty great. As teased before, this is a top-down GTA, and it's a near-direct port of the Nintendo DS version, albeit with better graphics, and more awkward controls. Touch Arcade's had some time to run/jack/drive/murder their way around the game a little bit, and here's what they noticed: • The graphics are much better than they looked in the early screenshots, falling closer to the PSP version of the game than the DS version. • The plot and writing are classic GTA, which is to say decent, and gratuitously profane. In a good way! • The controls aren't as awkward as they look. (Note: they look very awkward.) • It's a full-fledged GTA title, with integrated minigames, hours of gameplay and an appropriately high price: $10. GTA: Chinatown Wars is live in the App Store. January 17th, 2010 James Isabel **UPDATE: Now out in the US of A!** It seems like Rockstar Games‘ plan attack for the iPhone is “by suprise”. Either that or Apple completely screwed up again just like they did with Assassin’s Creed 2 Discovery iPhone. Tonight, in some European countries at least, Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars has been released (Link: $9.99)! We’re not sure if the game will trek to the US in a couple of hours OR if the game is going to get pulled soon. Either way, if you really want the game right now I’m sure you’ll figure out a way to download it. More screens after the jump.
