Developer Spotlight: Mike Smithwick of Distant Suns
Calendar16 Tue, 30 Aug 2011 16:31:00 UTC +00:00
By Rene Ritchie, Tuesday, Aug 30, 2011 | TiPb’s developer spotlights are like DVD/iTunes Extras for the App Store — a weekly look behind the scenes at the programers and designers that bring you the iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad apps and games you love. This week Rene talks with Mike Smithwick of Distant Suns. What’s your name? Mike Smithwick What’s your company’s name? First Light Design, LLC, I was hoping to name it something like “Apple,” I know, dumb name, but someone already had it. Where are you located? San Jose, CA. Within walking distance of Cisco (really!), Intel, eBay, and only a few miles always from the Mother Ship. What’s your website address? www.distantsuns.com What’s your Twitter name? @distantsuns for any hot breaking news about, uh, Distant Suns (duh!). And @lazyastronomer for general space and astronomy geek stuff. Why @lazyastronomer? When people ask me why I wanted to write Read More

Fun, educational, worthwhile, and good counterpart to Distant Suns
deslock 4.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
Pros: Being able to fly between the planets/moons/sun is fun. The rotating/zooming animations are smooth. The Earth's live cloud cover is nifty. Antialiased textures are beautiful when an object is far away enough to take up the entire screen. Great for kids.
Boring and buggy
Bill in AZ 1.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
Not impressed $5 down the drain. :-(
Gorgeous application
jbrandonf 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
Useful for anyone with even a mild interest in astronomy. This app is well built great value for $4.99. It's stable, accurate, and while it does have a couple minute learning curve for the controls, it doesn't take away from the overall experience.
Excellent!
marcw911 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
I bought this app based on how much I liked 'Distant Suns' which is by the same author. This app is the closest you can come to holding the solar system in your hand. The mapping of the actual planetary images onto 3D bodies is excellent. You can rotate around planets and moons in a 3D space as well as travel anywhere from the sun to Pluto. Highly recommended.
Another Great App from this Developer
mepilot1 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
Give's you the sence of the layout of the Solar System and if you were in a spacecraft you know better how to shuttle between the planets.
Space travel for the earthbound
teacher-type 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
Having seen the breathtakingly beautiful images of the planets and their moons on my desktop version of Grand Tour, I was eager to acquire a copy that I could carry around in my hand. I was not disappointed; the artistry and images translated elegantly and accurately from the large screen to the small.
Great start! Best as of today; needs a little work, a bug fix or two, and more moons and data.
danatkiva 4.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
I've been looking for a good 'solar system' app and this is the best as of today. I've bought all of the others and have been sadly disappointed. This app is almost all I would want. Improvements could include: more planetary information, information on time and distance scales (you're over the speed of light limit I think), more moons of the gas giants, etc. Look at Mars Atlas for inspiration. I have had long pauses (for no apparent reason) and one crash. But still, a great start!
Great Application
Patric76 4.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
I have looked for this very application. I love the ability to fly from one planet to another. The only things I would add would be the asteroid belt, some comets and information about the planets or moons. It would be good to fly to the planets or moons and have information about them such as size, atmosphere, etc. Other than that, I have been extremely entertained and recommend this app highly to anyone interested in space and the planets in our solar system.
great fun, lots to learn..
bujas 4.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
had great fun sailing over the stars and planets, the graphics are wonderful..if you like to see the plantes as if you were there then this is a great app...take a look..
Latest has fixed many bugs. View control is intuitive. Has many moons!
danatkiva 3.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
I still like this app, but another one has surpassed this as the best in the store. This app still has an intuitive user interface. And the latest version has many of the major moons, all scaled and animated accurately. When time is accelerated, it's not clear how your view is determined (caution: vertigo is possible). The Earth's 'current cloud view 'is the best feature. It will be interesting to see how these apps integrate the features of the competition to produce a great, educational solar system orrery.
Nice job!
OrionTheStargazer 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.2
After just a few minutes of touring and I'm just loving this program! Kudos to you for keeping Pluto as a planet!!
Best solar system app so far
mrtew 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.2
I think this is the best 3D solar system so far. Live Earth clouds are worth is alone... best looking Earth of the bunch. The other planets look a little dimly lit but that's probably one of the reasons the edges look smoother and nicer than the jagged edges in other apps. Worth the money if you like space etc.
this guy rules!
jjkujo 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.2
I love this app!! simply amazing, put together great! I love it! I like going to the depths of our galaxy without having to move my body. you can witch each planet revolve around the sun, each moon revolve around each planet. space is sooo freskin amazing and interesting. The only space app I love more than this is Distant Suns(same creator), I'm a wanna be novice star gazer and I could stand outside on a clear night looking up for hours, now I kno exactly what I'm looking at, planets, stars, constilstions, anything!!! I am buying a telescope because of this app!! and I love the meteor shower and extra info it tells u, there is one tomorrow morning that I won't miss cuz I missed the last one. THANK YOU MIKE FOR THESE GREAT APPS!!!!!
What a Ride !!!
Blue Pine 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.2
Zowie - what a fantastic app. Loads of entertainment value to go along with the wealth of info. I downloaded their other app, Distant Suns, at the same time but haven't been able to use it because of the day-after-day overcast skies we've had. So this app has had to pick up the slack, and what a treat, I must say. I doubt I'll ever tire of exploring within it, plus I'm glad to have found a fellow Pluto sympathizer ;)
Awesome
D00MFreak90 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.2
This guy is right on the money, all the planets rotate and revolve at the right speed, so realistic, typing in Dec. 21, 2012 scares the hell out of me though.
Oh Man !
stikman 5.0 stars Version: 1.1.0
Outta Space Dude! I have beaten this game twice. Once with Saturn. And Then useing only Io. LOL THIS GAME HAS UNLIMITED REPLAY. IT'S SO HUGE A WORLD !
Lame
Mattft 1.0 stars Version: 1.0.2
Just wiki these for free
Well done Michael (creator)!
Ghost422 5.0 stars Version: 1.1.0
Just a great app if you want the solar system in the palm of your hand. You can lie in bed and tour the planets. All that's missing is some great space music while you float from planet to planet. If you like this app, go check out Distant Suns (same creator, same quality work).
Don't Panic
Hrundi V Bakshi 5.0 stars Version: 1.1.0
I've never reviewed apps I've purchased, but after fumbling with this for a while I have to give props this time. I never read app instructions unless I hit the wall - and I didn't read them this time either. I stumbled across planet Descriptions; read Jupiter and Saturn then thought: "Wonder what it says about Earth?"
Great Application But...
Patric76 2.0 stars Version: 1.2.0
Sometimes the planets don't display properly. Earth was just a white dot. I had to restart to see it properly, but then other planets and moon were just white, brown or gray dots. Please check this, because I enjoy the app when it is working properly.
Beauty
espp 4.0 stars Version: 1.2.0
Pretty, stunning, relaxing, enlightening ... a great achievement. We are so, so, so tiny ... like dust in the wind ... at least physically speaking (spiritually speaking, we're bigger than the universe). Anyway, my main complaint right now is the poor ambient lighting. Even with it switched on, it's still not bright enough to see some things clearly. Otherwise, this is a grand ole app.
Wow
Mikejei 5.0 stars Version: 1.2.0
Outrageously cool.
awesome app
frauny 5.0 stars Version: 1.2.0
if you have the slightest interest in an astronomy you should deffinately consider this app. it is cool to be able to pick up my ipod and have a close up of all of our neighboring planets. i just wish that you could change the planet u are viewing double tapping on another in the background.
By Far My Favorite App!
Unclescott58 5.0 stars Version: 1.2.0
Out of all the apps I've downloaded so far, this my favorite by a long shot. This app reignited the love of astronomy I had as kid. If your a "want to be" astronaut like me, this is a must have. I love traveling through for the solar system, seeing what the different planets and their moons look like in real time. So good is this app that I ordered the CD version for my PC. I work in the education field, mainly with middle school kids. This app blows away both the kids and other teachers. There is only one thing I would change. I wish you could go into an automatic orbit around an object, rather than just seeing it stationary from direction you approched it. But, this is very minor complaint. I glad I bought this. And hope you get as much enjoyment from this app as I have.
Great but needs a small bug fix
Tarcin 4.0 stars Version: 1.2.0
Sometimes the app crashes and planet skins don't load. Please fix this as the app itself is amazing. If you fix it will be 5 stars :]
Doesn't Do Much
Boss Wheelie 2.0 stars Version: 1.2.0
You just zoom from one planet to another; big deal. Lower price to .$99, your price is WAY out of range for what you offer. Get pocket universe - a perfect astronomy app.
