TUAW Best of 2011 wrap-up and editor picks
Calendar16 Sat, 07 Jan 2012 01:00:00 UTC +00:00
It's January 6th, 2012, and today marks the end of the TUAW Best of 2011 awards. This was a massive undertaking, with 25 separate categories all requiring their own nominations and voting from our readers. We've learned some lessons for next year's event -- start earlier, watch for astroturfing in the nominations, drop some unpopular categories -- and the Best of 2012 will be even better. The editorial staff here at TUAW agreed with many of the reader picks, but we had our own opinions on some others. We want to thank all of the thousands of TUAW readers who took time to consider their favorite accessories and apps, nominate them for an award, and then vote in the competition. Without further ado, here's the full list of winners as well as our picks for the TUAW Best of 2011: Editor picks: 13" and 11" MacBook Air, 13" MacBook Pro Peripheral Read More

Who knew a shopping list could look so good?
Freegoo 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
I have tried virtually all of the shopping list apps in the appstore and they all seem to have their strengths and weaknesses. This one is by FAR the best looking one of them all. It just looks absolutely gorgeous. It's not all just about the looks either as Groceries comes with a pretty large database of items, but it doesn't slow down when adding items (like GroceryIQ) or have a bunch of extra unecesary aisle (Pick & Choose - which also has some incorrect aisles attached to items!). The layout of the UI is also well thought out, and easy to just pick up and use.
The best
wdcampbell 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
So, apparently grocery list apps are important to me because I keep buying them. I guess it's because the others didn't feel quite right. That's not going to be a problem for me anymore. This app combines a great UI with snappy responses and is the easiest and most enjoyable to use of any grocery list app I've encountered. Cheers!
The amount of thought and attention to detail in this app are extraordinary.
underbloom 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
The interface is gorgeous - it's an absolute pleasure to use. It feels just right. The pre-populated items, aside from being convenient, actually give you ideas you otherwise wouldn't have thought of. You can add items to 'favorites' so the things you get frequently are easy to add. And the ability to associate aisles with items is brilliant.
Ok app
Shopper22 1.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
Fine app but I was hoping it would keep track of prices and spending on the fly. That's a big negative for me. I could just as easily use a pen and paper.
The perfect way to keep track of your grocery list!
robotspacer 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
Groceries is simple, fun to use, and it looks great. It has a built in database with a huge number of items, so in most cases you can just type a few characters to find what you're looking for. Tap the item and it's added to the list, filed under the proper aisle. If you do need to enter something manually it'll remember it, so it comes up automatically next time. The best part is I always have my phone with me, so now I always have my shopping list with me—that was never the case when I kept it on paper!
Impressive!
dperreault 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
I have been waiting for this application since it was announced and now it is finally here. I love the interface and the ability to have multiple grocery lists for different stores. Up till now I have been using Grocery IQ but Grocery IQ was lacking multiple lists. Groceries database is not nearly large as Grocery IQ but I already added the items that I was missing and deleted Grocery IQ. I am looking forward to how the developer moves forward with this application.
A very nicely put together program only hampered slightly by its somewhat odd database of goods
glucero0 4.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
Groceries makes fairly quick work of putting together a shopping list and then using it to go shopping. It would be nice to be able to create multiple lists, one for each store you are planning to visit, and the database of goods it has are kind of odd. You can easily find just "mayonaise" for instance but not just "english muffins". Fortunately, you can edit any item once it's in your list to say whatever you want it to and you can add notes just so you are sure you get it right. Overall the app is close to perfect but with a couple of revisions it should be even closer.
Great, hoping for recipes?
Gsallomi 4.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
I love this app, very simple to use. One feature that would make this perfect is the ability to store custom recipes and add them to lists. The functionality is already there, you could double the list object and add the ability to add the second type under Favorites. Think about how easy one could plan a week's shopping than! Other than that, a solid app.
Good app, better than most of them out there
Lucky#Slevin 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
I love the app the UI is slick, the responsivness is quick and it gets the job done. The one thing I miss from using shopper is the ability to automatically delete itemes once your list is clear, as it stands now it doesn't ask you if you want to clear your list when it's done it just asks if you want to uncheck all items once your list is finished. I don't typically buy the same things everytime go to the market so there should be an option to clear the entire list (or just the checked items) once you are done
It takes WAY TOO long to do anything !!!!
Theresa'sEx 1.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
Look, let's face it, for what it's supposed to do this is a horrible ap. Computer Geeks pay attention here, when we take a simple procedure such as list building we should endevour to KEEP IT AS SIMPLE AS THE ORIGINAL TASK ! Suppose you know of ten items you need to get at the store. Which task do you think will take longer ; 1. just writting those ten items on a list or 2. Fiddle F**king around with all the steps neccessary to create that same ten item list in this EXTREMELY OVER COMPLEX AP !!!! Many of us came over to the iPhone from Palm. Palm had a very simple ap that came with all versions entitled "To Do List". For what it was it was OUTSTANDING, a simple program that made a list of what ever you typed in and placed a little box next to each item. As you worked you way thru the list you put a check in the box and the item disappeared - bingo - that's all you need for this task. For example, in this overly complex ap say you wanted to add the item "Milk" to your list. First you have to go "Dairy" section, open that, then alphabetically scroll down to the M's to find Milk. Now which Milk, do you want fat free, do you want whole milk .......bla bla bla bla. And it's like this for every SINGLE DAMN THING YOU WANT TO ADD. All I need to put down is "MILK".....I know what kind of milk I buy I don't need the whole store's selection in there I just put milk and I know what it means. This ap is written like I am submitting an order for someone who doesn't know me to shop for me. By the time I have gone thru all the steps for adding this one item I would have been half way thru my old Palm To Do List method. I am really pissed at myself for spending the money I spent on this overly complex ap. I mean I could have donated this money to a worthy cause like "Save the Gay Whales" or the Nancy Pelosi Plastic Surgery fund......
Love it!!!
Ebizzness 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
I absolutely love this app!! It is so easy to put together multiple shopping lists for different meals. I always have my Iphone with me, so this is perfect. When I'm out at an appointment and I remember something I want to add to my list, I don't have to go searching for pen and paper (which often got lost), now I always have accessibility to my list. I like how you can cross off the items as you find them in the store. The only thing I think would make it even easier is the ability to go to a specific letter in the list versus having to scroll. But this is an excellent value and I am now very organized. Thanks for a great app!!
Not worth it
Ausag32 1.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
You can't email this to other members of your household. would be faster to use notepad for the $$$
Quick and Easy!
CB in HB 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
It's my second purchase of a shopping app, and my last. Lots of seeded categories and items. Quickly add an item. Love how you can put comments with an item. If you want something, quick and easy, this is the right app.
If you are a list maker, this is your app.
angibee 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
I love that I can make several different lists for the different places I have to go. I am the type-A person who always has a list going for some project or another. I can add lists, and can add items that aren't in the premade list. Love it!
Just missing sharing
paklein 4.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
With shared/synch-ed lists like Zenbe, this app would be perfect.
Amazing!
Karinavz 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
I used it today for the first time at Sam's Club, it made my shopping easy. I am going to use this for ALL of my shopping! Do not bother with others, Buy this one, it's seriously worth every penny!!!
Very Useful Program
MrWms 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
This little program truly packs a punch. It's well worth the price. I will be putting it to the test tomorrow since its our shopping day. No more lists to write and forgetting pencils. I'm sure that the updates can only make this program better. The only suggestion I have is to be able to edit the aisles.
Needs email ability
Chicago Dub Fan 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
It is a great app. Would be even better if it had the ability to email the list... Wife does the shopping....
Best grocery app!!
})i({ Jennie })i({ 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
I love this app! I've been looking for something just like this for the longest time. I love how you can add your own notes to anything on your list. You can also make and save more then 1 shopping list. Comes in VERY handy when I have to to shopping at seperate stores for certain items. I would highly reccommend this!
Great!
josh.hofer 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
First of all, the GUI is absolutely gorgeous. The best I have seen in awhile, really brings life to what your doing. I have been a Grocery IQ user before this and will probably use both just for the coming coupons.com support. I am crossing my fingers that we see something like this implemented here so I don't have to use both! Also, a larger item list. One more thing I would like too see a number indicator on the icon for how many things are left incomplete on your list! It's definitely worth checking out!
Fantastic job sophie
Dougyfly 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
I think I may have forgotten to rate the app in my last review. I'll change that.
great but...
phubbard 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
....where are the brand names? Support is turned on in the settings but I can't find them and no info on the website.
Beautiful and really helpful app!
Mr Foxer 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
As we're already used to, Sophia presented us with one more beautiful application that really helps a lot on the daily life. Also, congrats to Laurent Baumann and Wolfgang Bartelme, who did the the icon and UI respectively!
Perfect for My Needs
flipy 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
I've been looking for something like this for a while! I need to save multiple lists- one for basic needs for each time I go, and different lists to save forweekly menu plans. I'm already saving money because i'm organized and only get what I need! The PERFECT tool for me!
Excellent UI experience
vkxmai 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
My iPhone’s language is set to German and I was pleased to discover that the app seems to be completely and correctly translated into German. Everything looks and functions in German as perfectly as it does in English! Vielen Dank!
Too simplistic
Norali 1.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
It is not what I expected.
Keeps crashing!
angelaelizabeth 1.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
I have this app and GroceryIQ with the intentions of choosing to use one app permanently over the other and GroceryIQ is more than likely going to be my choice. This app is easy to use, convenient and simple; but the constant crashing is irritating. I will continue to try for a few more days. My rating will increase with improvement. Thank you!!! 
Simple and well designed
Apfhex 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
Definitely the best looking grocery list app. I've been wanting something like this for a LONG time for my iPhone. Yes, sometimes it can be quicker to just jot down some stuff on paper, but I don't always have pen+paper around. I do always have my iPhone with me. Some of the other reviews plus the price (relative to other iPhone apps) put me off at first but I got it on sale, and am definitely liking it. I am NOT finding it too complicated at all, it's very easy to add items. You don't have to be too specific either, you can just add "juice" instead of saying what kind of juice. I found that "hot dogs" was missing (really?) but it's just as quick and easy to make your own items. Needless to say this app is going to remain on the home screen of my iPhone.
Love the looks of this app!!
donaldbrowning 4.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
I really love the way they made this app look fun as well as work well. I find it very easy to add items to my list, add items to the database of items, and check them off at the store. The fact that I can have checked off items removed from my list without any extra effort is fantastik! Makes it easier to see what I still need to buy.
Worth the Wait
Hubartt 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
I have been waiting for the release of this app since it's announcement last summer. Just recently I was wondering how it could be taking so long to get it released. Now I know why. This app is as complete as I could have ever hoped for. Every item I could think of, my favorite brands, a great interface, custom items, editing, smooth scrolling, and not in the least bit glitchy. I'm extremely impressed by this app and know it's going to be very useful for me. Great job with this.
Perfect for 1.0
MacCruzIn 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
Nice interface with well thought out lists and items, easy to add your own items. I was expecting a little more design in the list views as far as color and form as in Cover Sutra, but I am sure those details will be flushed out as the product matures. Well done Sophie!
Port A 1.0 stars Version: 2.0
I used to love this app, but I downloaded the update and it crashes every time I try to open it. Fix this bug and I will rate this . 
Crashing Issue
SuzyO 2.0 stars Version: 2.0
I love this app. It crashed often before version 2.0, but I used it anyway. Oftentimes, it would actually wipe out everything I checked off at the grocery store, yet I still used it. Now, with version 2.0, I can't even go into the app. It immediately crashes and exits. Please fix.
Needs pricing
Finkeljw 3.0 stars Version: 2.0
Great look, please add a way to calculate prices! It's handy to know approximately what your bill will be at the end of the shopping trip especially if you are trying to stick to a budget.
Please fix 2.0
Greenjillo 2.0 stars Version: 2.0
I was pleased with 1.0 but looking for features like rearranging aisles and emailing lists. 2.0 includes those features, but is not stable or even usable. Please fix
Looks nice, not too much else
pyang 2.0 stars Version: 2.0
It's a pretty app. But the database is nowhere near that of Grocery IQ's database. Try entering broccoli and you find a ton of custom-label prepackaged products and one entry for "Broccoli (Frozen)." There's no "Broccoli." Cauliflower? Same thing. Honey Bunches of Oats? No way to specify which type of cereal you want. There's an entry for "Bread." How about more than a few kinds? It's hard to promote Grocery IQ, especially because it's not actively being developed anymore since it got sold to Coupons Inc., but I just wasted a dollar on this software.
Crashes...
Spartantonio 1.0 stars Version: 2.0
I used to love this app, but as soon as I downloaded the "upgrade", it stopped working. Now when I open it, it acts like it is loading, and then just closes.
Won't even start up.
Rat K 1.0 stars Version: 2.0
Latest update made it so the application won't even start. Don't buy this until this is fixed. Used to work fine.
Yikes! Permacrash!
Gwads 1.0 stars Version: 2.0
Love this app. When it works. Which is never. It is on permacrash. Fix it please. Or give my money back. Seriously.
Went from love to hate
Doktorbombay 1.0 stars Version: 2.0
New update won't load at all. Loved it before, now I'm looking for a replacement. Aren't these things tested before thrown out there?
PLEASE FIX
iTurbine 1.0 stars Version: 2.0
While current notes offered by the developer suggest that existing users should NOT update until an update bug is fixed, unfortunately practically no existing user would have the opportunity or pause to read these application notes before hitting "update all" upon receiving the notification from the App Store/iTiunes of an available update. So too late-I downloaded the update and am very very exasperated that this once terrific app now keels over upon launch. PLEASE FIX.. And make sure that all data previously entered won't be lost once an update/fix is created.
Best Grocery List App There Is!
The Legend — 3C 5.0 stars Version: 2.0
After snooping around the iTunes App Store for a few months, I have to reccommend that you get this app. This is far beyond any other app out there.
Powerful and detailed
Ovrlrd 5.0 stars Version: 2.0.1
With many new features and fixes in the latest version, Groceries provides an excellent shopping tool for keeping track of stuff to buy. I like how easy it is to specify exact quantities of items. It becomes really handy when you are at the store. Having an iPhone or iPod Touch means you get to save time by not using paper. This application is a perfect example of saving time by including very easy editing of items in your lists. The ability to share lists via email is great for planning with others. It's very well designed for many different uses. I think that Groceries provides a lot that can't be found elsewhere, and includes additional options to fit everyones needs.
Great little shopping list app, some ideas for improvements
Only-Child 4.0 stars Version: 2.0.2
PROS:
Great for when you’re at the store, but making a list is a chore
Nate 3.0 stars Version: 2.0.3
This is easier to use when at the store than pen and paper. But writing a grocery list is somewhat of a chore.
Impressive
Francola 3.0 stars Version: 2.0.3
I have been enjoying testing this app. It has a beautiful well thought out interface and functionality. One thing that quickly reverted me back to "Shopper" though is simply that entering lists has one extra unnecessary step. After you enter an item, in order to enter another in succession you must first clear out the entry field instead of the app intuitively clearing it and being ready for the next entry. 5 stars for that one basic change please.
Excellent
JaredHB 5.0 stars Version: 2.0.3
I researched a lot of grocery apps before deciding on this one, and I'm very glad I did. This app keeps things simple and very organized. It's easy to add new items to the directory, but it already has most things pre-loaded into it. Also, I really like how I can rearrange the aisles to match whatever store I am shopping at.
The best shopper
wayne2626 5.0 stars Version: 2.0.3
Very easy to use much better than splash shopper, I have both.
Needs the ability to add quantities when you select each item
ejg25 3.0 stars Version: 2.0.3
This App is visually attractive and has a good depth of features. I like the general feel of it. But it's missing what I consider an essential element: The ability to specify quantities *when* you add each item. As it stands, it's something like 5 to 7 steps/clicks between selecting an item, and getting back to a screen where you can enter the quantity. This is impractical and time-consuming... if you want to enter ingredients from a recipe, you have to read through the recipe twice; ditto when reviewing your cabinets to see which groceries you need.
Very useful!
mac-lyn 5.0 stars Version: 2.0.3
This app is just great. Bring your phone - bring your shopping list. Very useful.
Excellent for all of my shopping lists
JoshDyson 5.0 stars Version: 2.0.4
I'm not the primary grocery shopper in our house - my wife is, and she uses Groceries for that and likes it a lot. I use it for managing shopping lists for everything else, and it's perfect. Really seeing polish and attention to detail in this release. Kudos!
it was almost what I needed, but still just another list maker.
Bobolli 2.0 stars Version: 2.0.4
I deleted listomni for this app and will be deleting this one for groceries iq. it seems to finally be what I am looking for. that being said, several people seem to love it and grocery shopping is kind of personal. check several out and see which one best suits your needs. I am lazy. I want the fewest clicks humanly possibly to do what is necessary and this application was overly complicated in some areas.
