Ten iOS Games for Nintendo Fans, Part One
Calendar16 Mon, 11 Jul 2011 16:07:07 UTC +00:00
Although it was always a long shot, the news that Nintendo still has absolutely no plans to publish their games on any other platforms will have come as a disappointment to many.  But not to worry, as help is at hand for those who don’t mind substituting the real thing for a clone or two! Here are the first five in our top ten countdown of popular published-by-Nintendo games and their closest iOS equivalents: Easily the most recognizable of any Nintendo game, or perhaps of any video game, Mario is perhaps the hardest to clone without attracting the attention of the lawyers.  We reviewed Super World Adventures and found it to be a fun platform experience, with more than a little hint of Super Mario games of old.  It’s still available for free inside the App Store, and although we don’t want to tempt fate, it could be worth grabbing it Read More

TUAW's Daily App: Grokion

Grokion came out a little over a month ago, but it's worth checking out if you haven't seen it yet. The game provides an interesting mix of Mega Man-esque 2D platforming action and Metroid-style exploration, and while Grokion doesn't quite live up to the polish of either of those games, it's an excellent iPhone-based indie title. The controls are probably the game's best feature; they are super responsive, so both platforming and shooting (after you're able to reach your first weapon) are easy to do. Level design follows the Metroid plan of allowing you to reach certain areas only after you've obtained a certain ability or finished an objective, and it's very well-done. The story is somewhat vague (you play as a robot tasked with saving a "biosphere"), but it's told in a fairly clear and interesting way. The game is only 99 cents, and the developers have said that future Read More

iPhone is not known to have many good sidescrollers and pin fact there has only been one that I have ever truly enjoyed. But that has definitely changed with the release of Grokion. The app pays homage to the classic sidescrollers on systems like the Sega Genesis. It reminded me a lot of the games Vectorman and Metroid. The game mainly consists of running through the level defeating enemies and pushing boxes around to create platforms. The first thing I noticed about the app is that the gameplay was actually smooth. The character controlled exactly how I wanted him to and there was rarely a time when I didn\'t feel in control. The game is being released in different episodes with every one following being released for free. This means you are going to get a lot of content for the price that you pay. Editor-in-Chief, iLounge Published: Thursday, June 10, 2010 Category: iPod, iPhone, and iPad Gems: Apps, Games + More Welcome to this week’s edition of iPhone + iPad Gems! Today, we look at six recent releases that vary from iPad-only to iPhone, iPod, and iPad compatible, including three edutainment apps for kids and three games. With the exception of one of the titles, either the app or the developer will be familiar to readers of past Gems columns, and the genres are all ones we’ve explored at least a little in earlier releases. Our top pick of the bunch is Drawing Pad. Read on for all the details. Edutainment: Drawing Pad + Poke Me!/Poke Me! HD If there’s anything to criticize in Darren Murtha Design’s iPad art application for kids—and there’s not much, really—it’s that Drawing Pad ($2) doesn’t automatically save the last piece of art created with its tools, starting every fresh Read More

Finally
Voloster 5.0 stars Version: 1
I've been waiting so long for this game to come out I've been following it on toucharcade and I can honestly say so far it was worth the wait. Awesome game, I'm so pumped to finally play a game on my iPhone with the metriodvania style done right. Good work guys.
Metroidvania awesomeness
B34ST 5.0 stars Version: 1
I have been waiting moths for this and cannot say that this is disappointing. It is a little bit on the hard side but that can be overlooked. All the elements of a good action platformer are there with great physics and pretty good controls. I would recommend this especially for the low price of $.99.
Thx u

Metroid for iPhone!!
A Diamond in the Rough
deiden 5.0 stars Version: 1
This game does not disappoint. There seems to be very little background explanation at the beggining, but that actually captivated me more than some giant back story probably could. I feel like it is going to be one of those wake up with no memory and slowly understand what happened stories which is awesome (for me at least). Anyway, this game is unique and polished. It is a safe buy.My only complaint is that it is hard to jump and shoot at an angle without moving. Besides that, this is just a great game. Aside from that, if you are looking for some metroid style gameplay with great graphics and some physics based environments, look no further.
Metroid on the iPhone!!!

Finally! Metroid for the iPod!
Megasamus1 5.0 stars Version: 1
This game feels like a megaman or metroid game, but plays like a game all it's own! My only three issues would be the controls, which are okay - but do not feel "tight" enough; the options menu, which currently only has an option to erase your save data; and the enemy explosion radius, which has gotten me killed a few times, but is only a minor issue to me. I still give grokion a 5 out of 5: it's fun to play, gives you a challenge, and is playable in small doses! :) (megasamus1 on the toucharcade.com forums)
will upgrade rating after an update
Wendal 4.0 stars Version: 1
well, no problem, the game is only at version 1. please fix: enemy death revenge explosion blast radius - gotta stand off screen and shoot into the distance to avoid the explosion. options? difficulty mode.. just lower the enemy damage for easier levels (and how about a 99 damage per hit hardcore mode?) map is confusing very excellent iphone game otherwise. runs no problem on 3G, probably better framerate on 3GS
Metroid :D
Mudkiprulz 5.0 stars Version: 1
Really cool game, best of it's kind. Although you're thrown into the action and you might miss a few important parts, it's a pretty awesome game. It would be cool to tone down the difficulty, and make different difficulties for people who are new to this genre. :). This is a very promising buy, guys! MystikSun from TouchArcade
Excellent
RbQ 5.0 stars Version: 1
This can easily be the best platformer sidescroller in the store, and shows of unity at it's best. A minor flaw could be scene to scene navigation, made as levels rather than a whole story all at once- that was annoying in metroid when I can't replay bosses..... Great job!
Simply awesome
Cifang 5.0 stars Version: 1
It's a bargain at this price, safe buy for sure.
Great looking game. Controls are terrible
crsrc 4.0 stars Version: 1
I've been waiting for this game and now that it's here it hasn't dissapointed at all...visually...but the controls make it nearly unplayable. As is, I actually want to give it 1 or 2 stars since the controls are so awful but since it is graphically very stunning and I have full confidence the devs will fix it asap I'm giving it 4 with the promise to change it to 5 as soon as they're fixed. Please don't make me regret this or else I will change it to 1.
Thank You!
hiurdin 5.0 stars Version: 1
This game is brilliant!!! I am loving it! The controls are fine although having a dual stick setup where the left stick just controls movement and the right stick controls aiming and that starts shooting when the thumb is touching, would be a nice option. The graphics are a treat and such a great price! I should probably get some sleep tonight rather than play this more but it will most likely be the latter :)
Explosions ruin game
T hizzle 3.0 stars Version: 1
Will give 5 stars when developer Tweens explosions from everything that dies... U kill something and u die basically cuz the explosions from them are so large.. Tone then down and thei AOE.. Explosions through walls shouldnt even touch you but they wipe out ur life.. Explosion radius is like 1/2 the I phone screen plz fix
Has potential
K1NG JU571N 2.0 stars Version: 1
Would really like to get into this game but the damage the enemies dish out is way too much (30 pts a hit from the first enemy I came across) and then the ensuing explosion that comes from actually killing one is completely retarded. Why does the enemy basically have to be offscreen when I kill it in order for me to survive? I love Metroid and Mega Man and really want to get into this game, but can't because of this. Please fix this.
Great value but needs work.
Spiral75 4.0 stars Version: 1
The game is amazing as far as graphics and all....but it seems like a work in progress. Still worth 4 's in my opinion. Would love to see a different control setup. The dpad is very small especially if you have larger fingers.
Same as the others...
FluffNugget 4.0 stars Version: 1
Explosions from enemies are absolutely ridonkulous & the controls need work but other than that, actually pretty good. Looking forward to updates & episodes...
Needs Work
PONG by ATARI 2.0 stars Version: 1
This game could be a very fun game with work. For now it is way to easy to take many cheap deaths. It just feels unfinished I feel like I payed .99 to beta test the game. For now I will wait for updates and avoid the frustration. Do what you want but my advice would be to wait until the dev team puts some more time into this game.
Best Metroidvania App
KnightRider1981 5.0 stars Version: 1
Great value, best in the genre (albeit not a lot of competition) difficult game, control is ok but leeway is given in the jump. The difficulty in my opinion inhibits exploration to some extent bc there are parts where you are not going to replay an area bc it already took you 15-20 tries to get past it - or maybe I just give up too easily.
Fix it...
Big Papa 2.0 stars Version: 1
I want to love this game, I really do. I can tell how much hard work has gone into it from such a small dev team, and it's truly amazing what you've created. The graphics are top notch, the level design is great, and the sound and music are wonderful. Too bad the game is unplayable because of the explosion radius of enemies. I'm sorry, hard is one thing, but this is just unnecessary. I'm tired of getting one shot by something that's already deaf because of how hard it is to get distance after a kill. Listen to me, devs.... This is a GAME BREAKING MISTAKE!!! Cut down on the blast damage from dead enemies and make the game playable, and you'll get 5 stars from me. As is, I'm being generous by giving you 2 stars, a game this unplayable should only get 1.
It's alright...
toamari 1.0 stars Version: 1
But it's really hard and enemies blowing up isn't needed and it's very anoying...
I love this game
Geewood 5.0 stars Version: 1
Amazing game, didn't know it was unfinished though. I need more! As for the people crying about the difficulty, easy mode with no enemy explosions and less dmg? The game is quite fun the way it is, would be a shame to see a few idiots ruin it.
Don't wait
SifuDave 5.0 stars Version: 1
The devs are very active at TA. they said the black doors open in episode 2... Anyway this is one of those cheap games that gets a price hike with every (free to everyone who has it) update. There's a fix coming out for the enemies but after that ep2 wil make it $1.99 etc... Pay your $1 now and consider it an investment you'll see a return on
One HUGE problem
Zalledo 2.0 stars Version: 1
This game could be great. Awsome metroid feel, and good mega man action. And I like a challeging game as much as the last guy, but... This was insane. The blast radius for dead enemies is HUGE, and kills you in a single blow. And those turrets kill you in two shots. You HAVE to turn down the difficulty. It really ruins the game. And the options are a lie!
Awesome!!!
appstoregamer 5.0 stars Version: 1
I'm lovin it!
Difficult, but sticks to it's roots
cool1400 5.0 stars Version: 1
Don't change the difficulty of the whole game, but you could add a setting for it. I had a lot of trouble at the beginning (and quite a bit the rest of the time) but that's the glory of your metroid/ megaman roots. After you collect a couple energy packs, the armor, and get used to the controls, the sense of achievement makes the struggle worth it. Something that would be nice is a button to lock movement so you can aim without walking off ledges (shooting rapidly usually locks you, but it's incredibly annoying when it doesn't). You might try to implement it as crouching to aim, or some upgrade that plants you as a turret. I am very pleased with this developer already and can't wait to see how this game will look after the next update. Buy it now, the promise this game shows is far underpriced at $.99.
