The Smarter Cities series is supported by IBM. Read more about building a smarter planet on the IBM A Smarter Planet Blog. Social media has certainly changed the way we interact and the way we do business, but the way we eat? No really, it’s true: social media is positively affecting virtually all aspects of our lives, including how we find, sell, and eat food. From helping restaurants connect with customers in new and innovative ways to helping consumers locate good eats, social media and the web are making our cities more delicious places to live. In this post we’ll look at some of the ways that social media is giving small food businesses the power to promote themselves and find new customers, as well as how it is providing city dwellers with the tools to find great (and safe) food. How else is social media making your city tastier? Let Read More
Review: GrubHub iPhone app delivers... our grub
Calendar16 Wed, 04 Feb 2009 21:10:36 UTC +00:00
Food delivery aficionados who live in Chicago, San Francisco, Boston, or New York are likely aware of GrubHub, an online service that offers a centralized location to find restaurants that deliver to you from all over the city. Through GrubHub, you can even order online from many restaurants and filter for those that are delivering now, different kinds of cuisine, and so on. At least here in Chicago, GrubHub has a pretty strong following, so when the company announced today that its GrubHub iPhone app had landed in the App Store, we were elated. In order to understand the need for an iPhone app that lets you order food, you must first understand the demographic that would want to have food delivered in the first place: the lazy. If I can place an order for some curry without dragging myself to a computer, or even if I'm on the train heading Read More

I use the web-based version atleast once/week. This is fantastic: thank you, grubhub! For the complainers out there, read the headline. You will see the cities that grubhub serves...
Fantastic In Chicago!
phixed 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Tons of restaurants with reviews and online ordering. If you live in one of the cities listed as launched I highly recommend this.
Yummmmmm
sommermt 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Read the Application Description before reviewing, people! It plainly says: "in NYC, Chicago, San Francisco, and Boston." Not really that hard to figure out.
Finally, every restaurant that delivers on my iPhone!
M3aloney 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Seriously, how much easier could dinner get? I hit one button, see every restaurant that delivers to me, choose one, then either call or order from the app. This will be a life saver, thank you GrubHub.com.
Starving in San Diego
hungry nightshift nurse 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
this is a FABULOUS concept, been looking for one like this, but I can't use it :( please add San diego to the list of cities! I would definitely pay for this app if it had my city.
No restaurants in los angeles area?
Chris Moneymaker 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
Same as other reviewer. Heard great things about this app on arstechnica but after installing and a reboot, no restaurants are found by my current location or address. Man the developers of this app are going to miss a precious window soon for people trying this app out from the solid ars review...
None in Seattle as well!
cristgarage 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
Not one listing! Zero. MAY BE WORST APP OF ALL TIME!!!!!
Sweet sweetness
Jjsk5th 5.0 stars Version: 1.1
Awesome. My friend told me about this app and it doesn't disappoint.
Sorta nice...but where are the menus?
Buck-I-N-TX 2.0 stars Version: 1.0
Had no problem getting it to tell me about places in Chicago and filtering, much like the full web version. However there don't appear to be any menus available. Just a restaurant name address, phone, and reviews. And even though it does point out which restaurants offer online ordering you can't do so through this app as far as I can tell.
Got Menus?
SleeplessinSF 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
Where are they? I could not access the SF menus! It showed name, icon, address, phone & reviews! Help! I want to love & use this app but it isn't looking good... Suggestions?
Crashes every single time
Chris Griswold 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
Never got a chance to use it.
Exits on any order
eddie_r 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
I tested this in Chicago, and online ordering does not work.
Network Problems
Sikofitt 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
I tried this on 3G and it said I had no network connection, so I checked in Safari and I had a connection. Then I tried wifi, it said I had no connection, so again to Safari and suprise, suprise I had a connection. This was a waste of my time.
DC Nada
Craemmir 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
Nothing in Washington DC. Those first two reviews are starting to smell a little funny.
None in Long Beach
Mcstewart37 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
The other reviews are correct: no So Cal restaurants. None in Long Beach. Missed opportunity. Maybe I'll try it again if it gets updated.
What about Cincinnati?
Slamkajs 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
There are no locations found for Cincinnati. This is troubling...
Nothing near me
[TheBORG] 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
As the title says, there is no listings for any restaurant near me. Pretty sad. I thought it might pick up something near me, but NOPE! The app is a waste of space on my iPhone.
terrible
mattelllllll 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
Excellent idea, terrible execution. Should've launched with more metropolitan areas listed. I'm in the DC area and nothing comes up, therefore i instantly deleted it and don't really intended to remember to check this app out again. Thank god it was free.
Piece of crap
steveken 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
This app is fairly useless in it's current state. You can not find results very easily. I tried 5 different cities in 5 different states (25 total) and wasn't able to find one restaurant in any of them and they are major, highly populated cities. The app needs to have some sort of directory of states they serve. That way you can search a little faster to know where it actually serves results if you are going to be going out of town.
Nothing in my Chicago 'hood
Nikkie 2.0 stars Version: 1.1
I had such hope. The majority of the places it brought up did not deliver where I live. Too time consuming to figure out what is close and what isn't :(
Worked well for me!
Viewaskw 5.0 stars Version: 1.1
East to find nearby restaurants. Food arrived on time. Goodbye paper menus!
Needs fine tuning
KKENN 1.0 stars Version: 1.1
The app could be great, but the dev's obviously are rookies to the iPhone. Poor scrolling, navigation, and overall user experience. I just read they just secured a lot more funding, so hopefully that helps improve their service, because it's a great idea...
People are RETARDED
In chicago 5.0 stars Version: 1.1
Dude, don't write reviews if you are too lazy to actually explore these apps first. The menus are under ONLINE ORDERING. To think I almost didn't download this because of all the low reviews from all these obviously tech challenged big mouths. If you don't know what your talking about, just keep quiet. Great app.
Too hard to use
gordonross 1.0 stars Version: 1.1
It shows me restaurants for the whole city, not just nearby, so what's the point of using my current location? You have no idea if they are close enough to deliver, are currently open, or how they're rated. Sorry, this app might sound impressive, but it's just not useful.
?
Bbbooorrriiisss 1.0 stars Version: 1.1
Great idea poor execution.
Good job.
sloppymilkshake 5.0 stars Version: 1.1
I really enjoy the website an I recently downloaded the app. I noticed it had poor reviews and I could understand why, buy this is still the first version and I imagine that things will get better, and people should really take a minute to look over the app before they start complaining. Great job, I enjoy it.
needs more...
what-ev-er 1.0 stars Version: 1.1
great idea, love the free... but not having anything around me show up is not cool... and even when something does show up, how about if I want to pick up, you only show lame delivery joints.
Needs alot of work
Winxypop 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
The main issue is I can't see menu's either. That's a big thing this app needs to do. After that my rating would go up.
unable to use app
bklynmotorgirl 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
I am in New York and each time I attempt to use the app, it crashes.
Chicago User disappointed
jeremyorion 2.0 stars Version: 1.1
I use grub hub online regularly in Chicago and I love the site. However, like other users, I don't see any menus in this app. Maybe I'm just missing it? Nice app would be worth using if it worked as advertised.
This App is terrible
Davidc78 1.0 stars Version: 1.1
Never works, not once. Crashes constantly.
Coupons don't work
Nathan King 2.0 stars Version: 2.31
Every time I tap on a coupon the app crashes
Great
Jeeves461 5.0 stars Version: 2.31
Love this app.
It might be okay ...
shkamateurphilosopher 1.0 stars Version: 2.31
I just spent 15 minutes trying to order something, but then had to call it in due to errors.
crap
mikey_mike_777 1.0 stars Version: 2.31
needs more cities
Awesomeness!
Robert Napotano 5.0 stars Version: 2.31
Loved it....very convenient and easy!
Cool
Ujack71 4.0 stars Version: 2.31
Depends on where u live, not many options for me but the app works great, very easy to use, any food delivery option is better than none, worth having.
Great App
cinecity 5.0 stars Version: 2.31
Great customer service too. Seriously
Great App!
BlakeQHatfield 5.0 stars Version: 2.31
Great ordering app! Customer service is top notch!
good but needs an iPad version!
Susan Page 3.0 stars Version: 2.31
GrubHub is a great service, and having an app for it is wonderful, but you need to create an iPad version that takes full advantage of the large screen. that would be five stars!
Grubhub
