Fifteen-Year-Old Developer Gets One Over on Apple
Calendar16 Wed, 21 Jul 2010 19:23:31 UTC +00:00
Posted 07/21/2010 at 11:23am | by Seamus Bellamy When is a flashlight app not a flashlight app? When it's just a clever disguise for another kind of app all together. In a move making him both a credible developer and a geek outlaw simultaneously, fifteen-year-old app developer Nick Lee submitted a humble Flashlight application for inclusion in the iTunes App Store that was actually a deviously hidden tethering application. According to Gizmodo, Lee's Handy Light functioned very much like the other gazillion iPhone flashlight apps currently lurking in the App Store, but with one tiny difference: the application's flashlight functionality was only a veneer to hide the awesome power of a tethering app that enabled AT&T users to connect their computer to the internet via iPhone without having to shell out an additional $20 per month. Not surprisingly, once the true nature of the app was discovered, Handy Light was unceremoniously Read More
A flashlight app dubbed Handy Light has made it’s way in to the App Store. This app costs 99 cents and can be downloaded here. At first glance it seems like a simple flashlight app, but in reality it has a hidden “egg” that allows anyone to enable tethering on their iPhone. For those interested in seeing how this works, see the video here. As you all may know, AT&T does not support FREE tethering, and it’s illegal to do this so Apple will have to remove this app from their App Store. Many users have already download this app to their devices, so how will Apple solve that problem? Well, Apple has implemented something called a “Kill Switch” in their iPhone OS software, so they can remove applications from all iPhones if they want to. They mainly built this so they can prevent malicious apps from spreading on other phones. If Read More
Tethering App Sneaks into iPhone App Store [VIDEO]
Calendar16 Wed, 21 Jul 2010 01:09:29 UTC +00:00
by Get it while it’s hot , because this sneaky tethering iPhone app is certain to be yanked out of the App Store very, very soon. Update: And now it’s gone from the app store. A new app, Handy Light [iTunes link], seems harmless enough: it turns your iPhone into a flashlight with 5 different color settings. On the surface, it’s just a simple $0.99 app. Under the hood though, the app is actually a SOCKS Proxy tethering app, capable of turning your iPhone into an Internet tethering device. It takes a few minutes to set up, but after you’ve followed the instructions in the YouTube video above, you will be tethering like a pro. Of course, Apple and AT&T might not be too thrilled with you. We’re pretty sure that this app is going to be out of the app store momentarily. Read More
