GDC 2010: Backflip Studios' year in the App Store
Calendar16 Thu, 11 Mar 2010 19:30:00 UTC +00:00
He revealed that a full $1m in that actually came straight from ad sales -- he's made deals with AdMob and other companies to put ads in his popular Paper Toss app, and he uses those ads both for straight revenue, as well as to promote his own games (more on that later in the talk). Farrior offered up a frank and honest look at what it was like to run an iPhone app company for a year. First, he talked about what Backflip did right last year. He said that he'd hired a talented team to work on his applications, and that the company had focused on distribution, which they'd "leveraged heavily" -- the more people playing their games, the better. They'd kept production cycles short, kicking out apps in no more than 12 weeks, and he said they'd made the good decision to "design for the medium" and the Read More
Happy New Year! Temporary Game Sales and Freebies
Calendar16 Fri, 01 Jan 2010 22:26:59 UTC +00:00
Happy New Year from everyone here at TouchArcade. We hope you all had a fun and safe time celebrating the end of 2009 and the beginning of 2010 last night, but let's get down to business. While you were watching the ball drop, a few great games were going on sale. Here are a few of the more noteworthy games with recent price reductions: As always, the prices listed are current as of this posting. If you're quick, you might be able to catch the tail end of The Second Annual New Year's App Blowout Sale from yesterday. Otherwise, you can check AppShopper for popular games with price changes as well as all games with price changes. Amazing game, and I have played (and deleted) most of the games in this category. Currently Crime City is the one I have spent most time and the only other one left on my Read More

Weekly App Store Picks: November 21, 2009
Calendar16 Sat, 21 Nov 2009 17:00:44 UTC +00:00
Another week passing means another batch of fresh apps pop out of the Apple approval oven and land in the App Store. As ever, I’ve selected four of the best from this week’s releases for you to check out. My top pick for this week is TimeTuner, an absolutely essential clock radio app for just about anyone who uses an alarm clock. Plus, I’ve also been looking at WorkSnug, Harbor 3D and AutoStitch. The iPhone Clock app does a valiant job of waking me up, but sometimes even Apple’s own apps need a bit of jazzing up. Enter TimeTuner, a gorgeous alarm clock app with a chic, ever-so-slightly ’80′s style. The app includes a glowing green LED clock, alongside a customizable radio tuner. Even without the alarm clock functionality, the radio tuner alone is a powerful app, certainly worth more than a couple of bucks. Powered by Radio Time, the tuner Read More
The Droid has been released and was accompanied by some new commercials. The commercials are clever, but are they enough to put the Droid in competition with the iPhone? The paid version of Shazam has hit the App Store. Shazam Encore is pretty much a five dollar version of the free version we all know and love. Check out the podcast for the details. Gamer’s Corner:Disney’s Jelly Car 2 has hit the App Store and is already number one in the Top 25. Firemint’s Real Racing and Gameloft’s Dungeon Hunter both got two dollar price cuts. Real racing is one of the most popular racing titles in the App Store featuring awesome graphics, 12 tracks, mulitiplayer options and much more. The popular RPG, Dungeon Hunter has made a big splash since it was re-released. Real Racing was originally priced at $9.99, and Dungeon Hunter at $6.99, but now both are just Read More
'Harbor Havoc 3D' – Line Drawing in Three Dimensions
Calendar16 Fri, 06 Nov 2009 06:44:36 UTC +00:00
So, is it possible to fit another worthy line-drawing game into an already crowded market? Backflip Studios thinks so with their new game Harbor Havoc 3D [$1.99]. Like Flight Control, the objective of the game is to route your ships to their proper docks. Simply draw a line from the ship to the dock and you're on your way. Harbor Havoc 3D's claim to fame, however, is the incorporation of multiple layers of vessels that you must properly navigate. Depending on the map, this can include submarines, boats and helicopters or even submarines and ground rovers in the underwater map. Each type of ship can only collide with like ships, so keeping this in mind is critical for success. The game comes with 4 maps: Far East, Atlantis, Arctic, and Lighthouse. Each offers a variant in gameplay. Far East is your straightforward Flight Control setup where you are docking different ships Read More
