Mashable notes this morning that the iPhone is no longer the most popular camera used by Flickr users. That honor now goes to the Canon 5D Mark II. Canon's numbers have been rising for months, and pics from that Canon model totaled 4,643 yesterday. The iPhone 4 users posted 4,460. The iPhone 4 was the number one image contributor when rankings were released last June. There's one thing to take into consideration. The iPhone numbers only reflect the use of the Apple provided camera app. If you're using Instagram or Hipstamatic or any of the 3rd party HDR apps your photos won't be tagged as iPhone images. Canon recently lowered the price of the 5D Mark II because its been replaced by the Mark III, so some of the boost comes from that. Also, numbers for the iPhone 4 are dropping as the iPhone 4S grows in popularity. Looking at the Read More
Hipstamatic and Instagram unveiled a partnership today to make mobile photo-sharing easier under the two forces, according to an exclusive report from Fast Company. Instagram will grant Hipstamatic access to a write API — something Instagram has been reluctant to do in the past for third parties — which will allow Hipstamatic users to quickly share their photos with Instagram followers. Hipstamatic has remained a popular iPhone app for a couple of years now. Users take photos using unique “lenses” (read: filters) to add special effects or moods and then share them off to social networks. Instagram has similar features, but Instagram is a social network in itself. The integration between the two is simple. When you snap a new photo on Hipstamatic and want to share it, you’ll now have the option to share it directly onto Instagram alongside all the other standard options like Facebook or Twitter. Once posted Read More

Hipstamatic will have exclusive access to Instagram’s network, and will likely receive a huge amount of promotion from the tags hugging underneath every ported photograph. […] For Instagram, the partnership provides the network with access to Hipstamatic’s high-quality content creators–a photography community of 4 million users who upload 48 million photos per month. […] Most significantly, however, the partnership helps frame Instagram as a social networking platform–a platform that other services will contribute to in the future, and one that could soon see ports from Camera+ and other camera apps. There's still some shopping days left till Christmas, so give the gift of apps and read on... This week at 148Apps.com we delved into the latest from the developers of Hipstamatic, the “disposable” Hipstamatic D-Series app. 148Apps founder Jeff Scott says, “I got a chance to try out the new app and can report that Hipstamatic D-Series does indeed bring back the nostalgic memories of sharing a disposable camera and swapping double prints into the digital age. It’s a great idea and well executed. There’s even the anxious need to burn the last shot by taking a picture of your foot, just to get the roll developed quicker. It’s indeed very fun. Editor’s note: Guest contributor Nate Bolt runs the UX firm Bolt | Peters, teaches design research at SVA iXD, and made that one SF to Paris time lapse. I get asked a lot why Instagram is so popular. It might be because we just threw the first iPhone photography conference, 1197, or because I allegedly run a company that studies and designs interfaces. It could also be the world of photography is changing so fast that lots of us nerds are talking about how a tool like Instagram can pass 10 million users in 355 days. The interface implications are fascinating, the company and technology dynamics of serving content to 10 million users with less than ten employees are fascinating, the artistic content is fascinating, and the reasons why people like me are so addicted to the damn thing are fascinating. Here’s a crack at why, since I think some other attempts haven’t quite captured it. Quality The quality of camera phone images and filters, whether Read More
Favorite Four Apps for Photo Effects
Calendar16 Wed, 09 Nov 2011 18:30:12 UTC +00:00
By Lisa Caplan on November 9th, 2011 We look at four classic favorite apps for creating or editing photos with stunning special effects. Last week we looked at the best camera replacement apps for the iPhone native app. So, this week we wanted to continue the theme, this time looking at apps that focus on adding those ever-popular effects and filters. Many of the choices feature a camera replacement component, but all do unique things to produce end results that are anything but the average cell camera shot, no matter how high the resolution. All of these apps will make even casual photographers look like virtual experts. Instagram Instagram is all about effects and sharing and it’s completely free. This long-time user favorite allows shutter bugs to shoot right from the app or use existing images in the photo album and easily add custom filters. Most photo apps have social media Read More

Loved by some, hated by others, the art of applying a special filter to a picture taken with your iPhone has exploded in popularity over the past year or so.  In fact, it has become so popular, there’s talk of a similar feature becoming standard in iOS 5.  In the meantime, those wanting to add filters to their pictures should take a look at any one of the following apps, all of which have a catalog of filters to give even the dreariest of snaps a new lease of life. A great cross-platform photo-sharing social network.  Take a photo from within the app, or select one from your Camera Roll, then add a filter of your choice.  There are nine to choose from, each with the option of adding a border, and the chance to share your uploaded pic through Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr and many others.  Free. Sherlocked?
Calendar16 Wed, 29 Jun 2011 03:43:37 UTC +00:00
By Rene Ritchie, Tuesday, Jun 28, 2011 | Apple’s iOS 5 built-in a lot of new, basic functionality previously filled by 3rd party App Store apps, which effectively “Sherlocked” those apps, rendering them redundant in a post-iOS 5 world. Or did it? There’s a world of difference between basic functionality that serves the needs of only the most casual user, and advanced functionality with enough control and features to satisfy a hardcore pro. What Apple did with iOS 5, as with previous generations of iOS, is take away the entry-level business of several prominent 3rd party apps, but still left them with the premium, higher order market. While it’s always dangerous creating an enterprise based on glaring functionality holes Apple will almost certainly fill at some point in the future, there’s just as much opportunity building a great product that Apple’s entry into the space can benefit. Hipstamatic for iPhone steps it up in latest update
Calendar16 Thu, 10 Feb 2011 15:58:42 UTC +00:00
The popular digital photography iPhone app Hipstamatic has made some bold and welcome moves in its latest update, dubbed version 200. The whole charm of the app is the sensation of using a traditional analog camera, with the choice of different lenses, flashes and films to create some instantly awesome images. Unfortunately, till now the feeling of old school meant, as it was in the olden days, a decidedly unromantic wait for the film to “load” again after taking one picture, a tiny viewfinder in which you could not really focus or frame a picture, and a bewildering (at least for the uninitiated) cockpit of settings. This is what put me off using it regularly for point-and-shoot sessions. It was more like point-shoot-wait for an eternity (eventually solve a sudoku or complete a level on Angry Birds) before taking the next picture. The app has been updated today. Apart from the Read More
Read More
iOS: 8mm Vintage Camera does what you probably expect: it records video in a vintage style, letting you change lenses and film stock for different effects. It's like the popular camera app Hipstamatic, but for recording video. 8mm can access both cameras on your device (if you have more than one) and comes with a variety of effects (as seen in the video above). It does little beyond recording and sharing video (which you can save, email, or upload to YouTube), but it's remarkably fast (on an iPhone 4, anyway). Recording video with effects required no processing time and was simply ready to go immediately after capture. If you're really into giving your photos that vintage look, you'll probably be excited to do the same with your videos. The effects are surprisingly nice and definitely do a nicer job than a lot of old film plug-ins you can find for iMovie Read More

Sure, you've got your Hipstamatic filters and your ProCamera bag of tricks. But to capture truly ethereal slow-shutter speed shots and lithe light paintings, you're going to need Magic Shutter. It looks pretty amazing, and amazingly pretty. You can choose among front and rear-curtain sync effects in flash modes, meaning that the blur effect either tails or leads the sharp image. It's a creative blend of the iPhone's video and still camera, and may just elevate the app camera effects game from "hipster art" to "art art." While Magic Shutter does a terrific job of mimicking the blurry beauty of a long-exposure photo, you are a wee bit limited in output resolution because of limitations Apple puts on using the camera at full resolution for video. It's disappointing! But not so much, I'd guess, that it's a dealbreaker, especially at $3 and with an upgrade coming next month that promises improved Read More

Homescreens – Dezember 2010 (iPhone + iPad)

Apple names top iPhone, iPad apps of 2010
Calendar16 Thu, 09 Dec 2010 18:59:38 UTC +00:00
It’s getting near the end of the year and Apple is showing off the iTunes Rewind list with the top apps of the year for the iPhone and iPad. The list is basically just a promotion for a bunch of apps and being featured in iTunes can be a major boon for app developers. The company has also singled out a few programs as “award winners.” The photo altering app Hipstamatic, Plants vs. Zombies, Flipboard and Osmos for the iPad got special shout outs from Steve Job’s company. I’ll have the full list of top apps after the jump but there were some interesting findings. Despite having more than 12 million sold, Angry Birds wasn’t the top-grossing iPhone program because the MLB.com At Bat program has a $15 in-app purchase option. Facebook is the top free app and that’s not much of a surprise considering the world’s largest social network has Read More
Apple highlights the best of iTunes in 2010
Calendar16 Thu, 09 Dec 2010 16:45:00 UTC +00:00
Apple has highlighted the best of iTunes from 2010, showing off their picks for the best apps, movies, TV shows and more. There are several categories and many of our favorites made the cut. Here's an overview of the winners. Let's jump right to the fun one -- apps. Apple has created separate categories for iPhone/iPod touch apps and iPad apps, but the big honors went to Hipstamatic, which Apple named "iPhone App of the Year" (also a former TUAW Daily App pick) and the record-breaking Plants vs. Zombies which took home the "iPhone Game of the Year" title. On the iPad side of the store, Flipboard was named the "iPad App of the Year" for 2010, while Cosmos picked up "iPad Game of the Year." From there, Apple breaks down the hot trends in both iPad and iPhone/iPod touch apps. Categories include food and cooking apps, news, stories, apps for Read More

Apple has released their annual year-end “iTunes Rewind” lists for the year, and here’s what made the top of the charts. TechCrunch is reporting that Apple has announced their “Apps of the Year” for 2010 as part of their iTunes Rewind 2010 lists, which cover music, movies, TV shows, podcasts and yes, apps. This year the company has split the categories for both iPhone/iPod touch as well as the iPad, and a full list of each category and winners is listed below. However, four apps get extra special treatment as this year’s “award winners” -- let’s give a big round of applause for vintage photo app Hipstamatic, popular games Osmos and Plants vs. Zombies and unique reading app Flipboard. Pro Australian photogs have a go at the iPhone camera
Calendar16 Mon, 06 Sep 2010 21:00:00 UTC +00:00
There's no question that photography with the iPhone is really catching on. Now, with iPhone 4, the camera quality is up, and people seem to be using it more and more for pictures they want to keep instead of casual snaps. A pro group of photographers, the ACMP (Australian Commercial and Media Photographers) ran a competition soliciting photos taken with an iPhone. The requirement was that the entrants use the Hipstamatic app to acquire the images, and that no further image manipulation could be applied. Hipstamatic emulates old styles of analog photography, along with classic lens emulations and different film characteristics. The app is US $1.99. The results are interesting and artistic. I've put a couple of the winners in a gallery, and I've provided a link so that you can see all the entries. The grand prize winner of the competition, Andrew Evans from Sydney, received an iPad. ...Hipstamatic for iPhone on the iTunes App Store... Read More
Everybody knows about how fast app switching works, but it’s a relatively rare group of apps that actually support background completion of tasks. Hipstamatic (review here) makes great use of Task Completion to print pictures in the background (although you’ll still have to “develop” one shot before taking another), and you’ll even find that the badge icon reflects the number of pics that you left to complete in the background. Refreshing that badge icon isn’t as easy to figure out, but you can do so by loading Hipstamatic up and going straight to the camera roll (probably purposefully done so that you can confirm all images were processed correctly). By the way, has anybody noticed how high Hipstamatic versions are? Most apps are on version 3.xx or 4.xx, but Hipstamatic is already at v160. Where do they find the time? Read More
Calendar16 Sun, 02 May 2010 16:48:10 UTC +00:00

Posted 04/29/2010 at 1:56pm | by Ray Aguilera With 185,000 apps and counting, the App Store is a vast warehouse of digital goodies for your iPhone (and now iPad too). But like most mega-marts, the sheer size of it all makes the good stuff harder to find. We’ve scoured the Store, and found the best apps to help you use your iPhone to it’s fullest potential. Whether it’s games you seek, or productivity tools, we’ve got you covered. As it turns out, there really is an app for that, no matter what that is. The iPhone and iPod touch brought back fun to videogaming, with developers focussing on innovation, affordability, and novelty. Touchscreen and accelerometer controls also force designers to think different, resulting in games that are a glorious collision of classic and cutting-edge gameplay and technology. --Craig Grannell Steph Thirion · $2.99 Eliss is the perfect game for the iPhone’s Read More
Hipstamatic

Hipstamatic is, by far, one of the best photography apps out there for the iPhone. It pays homage to the 1982 analog camera that allowed the user to change lenses and utilize different film formats. Just like the original, you can change the lens and film to apply different effects to your photos. The results are some of the most unique photographs you’ll ever create on your iPhone. The first thing to note before purchasing this application is that you are confined to look through a very small viewfinder when taking a picture. The app is trying to replicate the original Hipstamatic camera, with its plastic material and analog viewfinder. So, don’t expect to get a full screen preview of your image before you take the shot. I was a little skeptical of this at first, but as I began to use the app more often, I became much more comfortable Read More

Favorite Camera App!
Murph2che 5.0 stars Version: 100
I really love this app. It makes the ordinary look so incredible. I take so many more pictures because of this thing, I highly recommend it to anyone who wants stylish pics! Interchangable lenses, film, and flashes! Too much fun for words.
This app is not like others give it a rest already

For those who are miffed that they paid "all this money" for this awesome app; chill out. Sure the "hipster vibe" is there and you get short examples of what the film / lens is all about but it also requires you to know at least SOMETHING about analog photography. This is an app you get immersed in. You snap a few pics that turn out better than your regular camera app, post them to Facebook and your friends say: "wow great pic!" then you proceed to cough up $.99 for more lenses to experiment more. Not a big deal. Once you get the hang of it, you enter the contests with your best work. Name another app that has this level of support and offerings? You can save photos to the hipstamatic album (does this automatically) or set in the settings to save all pics there. Lastly, I'd like to share my two cents where the app could use improvement. First, I'd like an option for full screen viewfinder. I understand the nostalgia hipstamatic is trying to go for but I'd like options. Also, please enable volume up as shutter release. Thanks again for this awesome app though. Most recent update has lots of speed and loss prevention. Love it!
Magnificent idea with quality execution
Benjamin Sprows 5.0 stars Version: 235
GREAT bounceback with v235. I love what Hipstamatic offers and the broad range of options provided, especially with the HipstaMart upgrades avenue. There are other photography apps offering a few more flavors of film/framing/etc., but this remains my favorite total everyday effect-added package. The Paks offer good variety and the sponsored contests help push you to revisit your own shooting style along themes, even as you use it for daily utilitarian shots. In terms of bang for the buck, this is money I feel confident few will regret parting with for what they get, and even if you like to keep relatively few apps on your device, this is likely to be a long-term keeper. Strongly recommended photography app.
In app purchase recovery

For those who lost their in app purchases:Flip camera over to adjust settings > go to store (click on shopping cart symbol) > click on "downloads" > press "restore purchases" and voila! The lenses/film/cases/flash you lost should appear for re-downloadHope that helped.
This app used to be great
Dannyboylee 2.0 stars Version: 235
I used to use this app all the time. I own all the lens and film options you sell. But now that I've been playing more with other photo apps, I really see the flaws in Hipstamatic.I realize you're trying to be cute and make it nostalgic, but this isn't a real film camera. I don't want to have to wait for my photos to "develop"! And with the viewfinder the way it is I can never tell how my photo is going to look! The composition is always random. This is not only NOT how vintage cameras worked, but it's not how your app used to work!I used to be able to properly frame my shot and take the picture. In its current state I never use Hipstamatic. And if I hadn't already dropped so much money on all the lenses and film choices, I'd delete the app from my phone in a heartbeat.
Your back on top for me

Thanks for the bug fix! Your back as my top app!
Lost everything.
andrea.gurner 1.0 stars Version: 235
Had to uninstall/reinstall because I was not able to make any in-app purchases for a couple months. It would tell me it was unable to connect to the iTunes store and I must first purchase the app the pak was used for. Previously I've made several in-app purchases, and I've had hipstamatic for nearly 2 years now! Once I reinstalled, only the free paks were restored, and I had previously purchased some paks that are no longer available. I would most certainly like to have all my purchases restored!
Crap!
