Historic Earth: Another actually useful app for the iPhone
Calendar16 Tue, 27 Oct 2009 19:48:58 UTC +00:00
Historic Earth is a mapping app that permits you to overlay historic maps on modern maps, which can make for fascinating study and underscores one of the ways the iPhone can be a great research tool and school aid. It claims one of the largest collections of geo-coded maps of any app anywhere. Historic Earth allows you to detail your current location, view locations features or search for a specific location as well, making it flexible and easy to use, and you can compare the two maps, both current and historical from any date from the 1700′s to the late 1900′s. You have full pan, scroll and zoom capabilities. Currently, the 32,000 map database includes maps for the Midwest, Washington State, Florida, California, Alabama, New York, Maine and Washinton DC. Maps are added all the time, so eventually it’ll have all of the US in there. This one is $5.99 in Read More

I've been looking forward to this App for quite a while - Nice work!
Great app

This is an essential app for any map geek. Absolutely fascinating.
Beautiful and useful
Exit 44 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
I work on projects that often require finding sites that are only referenced in 19th century documents. I am lookng forward to seeing more maps come online. Well done.
Cool app but limited coverage in 1.0, little for West Coast
Thornezilla 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
Nice app and interface, but coverage is mostly limited to US East Coast sites. Get some old maps online for California, Oregon and Washington, please! App Store writeup encourages buyers to pre-check locations, so this shouldn't be a surprise to careful purchasers.
Fascinating

I've been browsing NYC maps for days. Love the app, and it can only get better.
False Claims
DanielinMaine 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
Says it includes Maine, it only includes the most southern tip of Maine, about 2% of the state, hardley a true statement that it covers Maine. The app is hard to figure out, and does not show buildings or any archived photos from what I saw, just old maps. I was really looking forward to this one, for price it is clearly a FALSE CLAIM.
Ummm, okay?
Pyrate*girl 2.0 stars Version: 1.0
Says it has mulitple maps. And it does; but for 6 bucks I really hope they add the thousands of maps they claim to have digitally. Illinois has one map; where are the historic maps of Chicago?! Would be nice for reference. And southern states! WTF, I know I can find maps online of the southeast or west, yet none of those territories are included in the selection ( if you can call it that) of maps offered. Add more maps and you get more stars.
I like this app : )
Zak Saber 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
This app is great and I found out streets and bulidings that I never knew existed. I thought it was cool how you could you switch from present to past map layouts. This app needs speed improvements and more features. @saberserene
So-so
Genie-ology 2.0 stars Version: 1.0
This app does what it says it will, and the adjustable transluscece of the overlay of old onto new is cool, but if you try to zoom in on the antique map to read details like homeowners' names, all you get is giant, smeary pixels. Fun to look at, but in its present iteration, only a novelty. No serious uses for it, so I think it's overpriced. I suspect the company wants to send you to your desktop computer for a view and purchase of their product. That's okay, too: they have an excellent website. I recommend you save the five bucks on this app and go directly online.
