Lotusland Studios is proud to present the official version of John Yianni's award winning game Hive.

Hive is a board game with a difference. There is no board! The pieces are added to the playing area thus creating the board. As more and more pieces are added the game becomes a fight to see who can be the first to capture the opposing Queen Bee.

The soldier ants battle to keep control of the outside of the hive, whilst the Beetles climb up to dominate the top. Spiders moving into holding positions as the Grasshoppers jump in for the kill. Keeping one eye on the hive and the other on your opponents reserves, the tension builds as one wrong move will see your Queen Bee quickly engulfed; .... game over!

Hive's unique gameplay is suitable for players of all ages. The game is quickly learned but hard to master like other classic games of its genre. Interface elements clearly indicating where a player may move or place their pieces makes this version easier for the novice to learn than the tabletop version, and players without a partner will be challenged by the AI opponent.

Hive is a beautiful 3D game that allows the player to choose from different sets of pieces and different colored backgrounds. While Hive is not traditionally played on a board, users may display a hex grid to aid their visualization of the game's possibilities and movements.

This version of Hive includes the Mosquito, a parasitic new Hive piece that takes on the abilities of its neighbors. Use your Mosquito cleverly as an extra Ant, Beetle or Spider. Tournament rules forbidding placement of the Queen Bee as the first move are also an option for each game.

Hive automatically drops into the current game when it starts up so you can quickly continue. The player may also save their game to finish later. Screenshots of the game may be saved to the user's photo album.

The single player mode features four levels of difficulty, including a beginner setting that will not overwhelm new players of this game. As the player defeats each level, the next is unlocked.

Two players can also play each other using one device. Now the game without a board can be played without a table!

Hive's four tile sets include a wooden set with the official Hive 2nd Edition artwork, a plastic set with the official Hive 3rd Edition artwork, a third set designed by LotusLand Studios, and a high contrast black and white 'Carbon' set designed for outdoor play.

The game's soundtrack is by John Tennant, including the tracks 'Depths','TypeCaste' and two exclusive remixes of 'Project of Science' from the album 'Early Ambient Works'. Users may also listen to their own music library when playing Hive; the game will not start its own music if music is already playing.

Another month has gone by, and as usual there is a need for a roundup. February brought a lot of interesting games, and there are a couple of gems found within the roundup worthy of your attention. An Assassin in Orlandes – polished gamebook. I remember “playing” gamebooks as a kid. Making the... Read More

Hive has been around since 2001. It draws inspiration from classic abstract strategy games like chess and shogi but does away with that pesky board (see also: Tile Chess). The iPhone/iPod touch app [US$1.99, iTunes link] brings everything from the physical version to your pocket, and if clever placem... Read More

Hive, the well known game by John Yianni, is on the iPhone courtesy Lotusland Studios, Inc. This board game comes with a huge difference from other similar games, for there is no board here. The board is formed when the pieces are added to it, so we sort of build up the game as we play it. The main o... Read More

I love how easy it is to get playing. The tutorial quickly familiarizes you with the game and the controls. The touch screen UI leverages all the iphone/ipod tricks it can, in a way that makes sense. The smart camera combined with a well thought out interface really makes playing a title based game on a tiny touch screen quite bearable, even with two players over a cup o' joe. Lots of customization options. Great soundtrack, but doesn't lock you into their music, you may listen to iTunes instead. A great game, perfect for this platform, and worth every penny!
Pretty decent implementation 4.0 stars

Please just anti-alias the graphics and highlight last piece moved by AI and outline from whence it was moved. Strengthen the AI and we got ourselves a pretty nice Hive. Hopefully in future online or wifi / bluetooth play.

Very nice i do wish that the game was a little harder as the hard level is still easy.

This is a really nice iPhone adaptation of a classic game, well done. Music, art, and gameplay are all very smooth. Only complaint, albeit a small one, is the delay caused by the AI.
One of the best board games 5.0 stars

Hive is a great game and it's translated so well to the iPhone. The included all the variations, including the mosquito. The soundtrack is amazing, too. It also helps that the games doesn't take forever to play — you can play a round whenever you've got some time to kill. Excellent all around.

Would give it 5 stars if not for a few minor bugs.
