Back in December, Rocketcat Games released their third grappling hook-themed game Hook Worlds [99¢] into the App Store, following their previous excellent efforts Hook Champ [$2.99/Lite] and Super QuickHook [$2.99]. We liked Hook Worlds an awful lot in our review as it essentially contained four separate endless running games in one package, all based around a novel hooking mechanic. Well, people who bought the game the first weekend received four worlds anyway, as the fourth world was a bonus addition for early adopters of the game. Late-comers fear not, however, as the latest update to Hook Worlds makes available this special fourth world to all owners of the game. It’s a good thing too, as the fourth world is easily my favorite. The graphics are based on Atari 2600-era games, with extremely basic and blocky graphics, and the gameplay is loosely based on the original Hook Champ. It’s so simple and Read More
TUAW's Daily App: Hook Worlds

Hook Worlds is the latest from Rocketcat Games, makers of Super Quick Hook and Hook Champ. If you've played either one of those games, you'll know what to find here: running gameplay that uses a one-button hookshot to keep your character moving as quickly as possible across various levels. Hook Worlds, as I understand it, is more of an arcade version than the other two games (though you can try Hook Champ Lite to see what the gameplay is like), featuring four heroes hookshotting along four different worlds, each racing to get as far as they can. This is an app almost meant for those familiar with the "Quickhook" genre, but if you want to just give the game a shot without a lot of story or obstacles in your way, Hook Worlds will serve you pretty well anyway. The game is just US$0.99 cents right now, and for a limited Read More
Last week we brought you new video and information on Rocketcat's newest iOS game Hook Worlds [99¢]. The aim of Hook Worlds was to be more accessible to people who felt put off by the somewhat hardcore nature of their previous offerings Hook Champ [$2.99/Lite] and Super QuickHook [$2.99]. Hook Worlds is a collection of 3 (or 4, depending on when you're reading this) endless running-style games, but featuring the grappling hook mechanic that is a Rocketcat trademark. Hook Worlds definitely succeeds at being more accessible, and although it lacks the structured level progression of their previous games it does not lack in gameplay or fun. Each game included in Hook Worlds is its own complete experience built off of the same general idea of hooking as far as possible in a randomly generated level. The hardest adjustment to make playing Hook Worlds compared to the previous hooking games is getting Read More
A few weeks back Rocketcat Games, creators of Hook Champ [$2.99/Lite] and Super Quick Hook [$2.99], announced yet another hooking title for the iOS platform titled Hook Swing Worlds. Now called just Hook Worlds, this new game will contain three different variations of endless hooking action, all featuring some elements from Rocketcat's previous games. Essentially three games in one, the first game in Hook Worlds stars Theodore "Gramps" Hooker swinging through different locations while being chased by a guardian spirit, similar to the original Hook Champ. The second game features Hook Champ's downloadable darling Zelle as she collects coins while using a shooting ability to take out barriers and enemies. The final game in the trio features a futuristic version of Super Quick Hook's Gnomey character as he dodges obstacles by hooking and using a gravity flipping mechanic that is inspired by fellow developer We Are Colin's own pixel based running game Read More
Developer Rocketcat Games, who have previously brought the swinging adventure games Hook Champ [$2.99/Lite] and Super QuickHook [$2.99] to the App Store, have just announced they have a new hooking game in the works titled Hook Swing Worlds (tentative title). According to the Rocketcat blog, Hook Swing Worlds will be a collection of three different style endless hooking games, which sounds similar to the Avalanche/Eruption modes from Super QuickHook. The developer has given some details about each of the three game styles to be featured in Hook Swing Worlds: Game World #1: Curse of the Death God Play as adventuring family patriarch Theodore "Gramps" Hooker as you swing through jungles, caves, and volcanoes while clutching stolen treasure. Beware the guardian spirit of the idol! Features: Chaser Survival, Quick Recharge Rocketboots Ability Game World #2: Dungeon Gunner Zelle finds herself trapped in a huge dungeon filled with precious, ancient gold coins. Also Read More
'Super QuickHook' 1.3 Adds New Hats, Characters, and More

We were huge fans of Rocketcat Games' original title, Hook Champ [$2.99 / Free], and love Super QuickHook [$2.99] even more-- Especially with the updates it has been getting. Super QuickHook came loaded with the fast paced endless Avalanche mode at launch, and the latest 1.3 update added Eruption mode. Eruption mode is even more difficult and requires either playing through most of the game or scoring over 4000 in Avalanche mode to unlock. In addition, 1.3 adds six new playable characters. Three are unlockable in-game, and the other three are available via in-app purchase. Free characters include Gnomey, Aldora, and Hookbot (the DLC character from Hook Champ). If you're willing to shell out a couple bucks, you can buy Jake and Gunny (also from Hook Champ) along with the new Super QuackHook, the grappling hook equipped duck. Each character comes with their own unlockable grappling hook and unique hats. They've Read More

iPhone Gaming: Looking Back on 2009 and Forward to 2010
Calendar16 Thu, 24 Dec 2009 20:20:34 UTC +00:00
With the year coming to a close, I feel confident in saying with as much authority as I can muster that 2009 has been an amazing year. Soon we will be posting the results of weeks of deliberation on what we feel were the best games, a holiday buyer's guide for people who opened an iPod touch or iPhone this Christmas, and other year-end stories highlighting the various games we feel are the "must-haves" of 2009-- But it hardly seems right to summarize the year in a few simple lists of game titles, brief synopses and links to reviews when so many remarkable games were created and events transpired that were still highly noteworthy or influential but fall outside of the rigid boundaries of "best of" listings. When the App Store first launched on July 10th, 2008, very few people, myself included, realized the full potential of a reasonably open platform Read More
Update Round Up: Hook Champ, Doodle Jump, & Pocket God
Calendar16 Wed, 02 Dec 2009 08:19:43 UTC +00:00
There have been a whole mess of game updates that have been released in the latest App Store refresh. I recommend checking for updates either in iTunes or on your device to see what's out there for the games you own, these happen to be my favorite three updates I downloaded tonight: Hook Champ, $1.99 (On sale from $2.99) - We were given a preview of the update earlier this month, and all the new content and features the developer teased us with are finally here. Aside from a new playable character, and another set of levels, Hook Champ also features full OpenFeint integration with achievements and the ability to compete against your friends' times in any level of the game. is also available (although obviously lacking the new content) if you haven't had the chance to give the game a try yet. Doodle Jump, 99¢ - What may possibly be Read More
Hook Champ Review: It’s The King of the 8-Bit Jungle!
Calendar16 Thu, 19 Nov 2009 10:30:33 UTC +00:00
This next game got two impressions out of us: WTF is this graphics, and second, holy [bleep] this is good! Hook Champ is one of those games that carry a definitive art style more than anything. After you get over the fact Rocketcat opted out of shiny 3D graphics, you’ll realize this is one heck of a platformer that’ll keep you “hangin” for hours after hours! Presentation Hook Champ comes in 8-bit retro graphics, and (obviously) remind me of Indiana Jones. I’m usually not a fan of these type of graphics & sounds (us youngsters ), but for some reason I absolutely LOVE it in this game. It’s just so perfect for this kind of game. The level design is also just right. It gives you a challenge while not making it impossible. As you progress (and have enough in-game coins to do so) you must update your gear or the Read More
We enjoyed Rockcat Games' Hook Champ [$2.99 / Free] when we took a close look at it in our review, we then discussed the game during episode 2 of our podcast and there has been a thread on our forums that has been constantly growing since the game released late last month. Hook Champ is a game that takes the swinging mechanic which has been amazingly popular both in Rope 'n' Fly and its sequel as well as the recently released Rope Raider. The game has wonderful pixel art retro graphics, and feels more like an Indiana Jones game than the actual Indiana Jones NES game. Using your trusty rope and grappling hook you swing through a series of caves trying to make it out alive with the idol you stole before the evil (and hungry) ghost that is constantly chasing you catches up and eats you. Everything in the game Read More
Two new lite versions of games we can't say enough good things about appeared on the App Store recently. If you haven't already bought either of these games, I really recommend giving the free versions a spin With a nearly flawless 4.5 star rating here on Touch Arcade, Baseball Superstars 2010 took everything that was good about Baseball Superstars 2009 and made it better. If you like baseball games or roleplaying games, Baseball Superstars 2010 can potentially consume your gaming life as you find yourself batting through just one more season before going to bed to make your super batter even more powerful. And of course, like most Gamevil games, there's even a completely off the wall commercial for the game that is totally worth a watch just to see an angel and some type of demon having some kind of epic baseball battle. Hook Champ may very well be my Read More
