In some cities, pulling out a transit map is an open invite to solicitations from panhandlers, swindlers and car services. But you can avoid such nuisances if you own a smartphone. Then you only have to avoid being ripped off by your cell carrier, or an incompetent software developer. There are many hundreds of mobile apps that help you navigate transit systems around the world. They are almost too easy to create — because many municipalities distribute their transit information widely and freely — and they can be profitable, because users think nothing of spending a buck on one. But these apps can also be a headache for developers to manage over the long term, because transit service can change frequently in any given city. And if you, as a consumer, download an app that has no legs, you pay dearly in wasted time or worse, a trip to the wrong Read More
A question for New Yorkers: How much would you pay for another 10 minutes with your family after work? If the answer is $5 or so, you are in the sweet spot of a few mobile apps that will help you find the right subway — and the right spot in the right subway car — to get you where you need to go in the shortest possible time. As usual, iPhone users have a leg up, because mobile software developers have built far more useful apps for the platform than for, say, Android or BlackBerry. But people with those phones at least have a few options. On the short list are Exit Strategy NYC ($4, iPhone and BlackBerry; $3, Android), HopStop (free, only on iPhone), KickMap ($3, iPhone; $5, iPad; not available on Android or BlackBerry), CityTransit ($3, only on iPhone), and NYC Bus and Subway Maps (free, only on Read More
The time for Macworld Expo 2010 is upon us and the handiest tool you’ll bring to San Francisco with you is, of course, your iPhone. What apps should you install on your phone to enhance your Macworld experience? The iMacworld is a handy guide for navigating the show floor and planning your day. iMacworld, featuring maps and a show directory, was just recently updated for 2010, so jump onboard. For those who don’t travel often, favorite airport amenities frequently change and may be difficult to find. You’ve got 30 minutes between flights and can’t play “Where’s Waldo” to find your favorite coffee dispensary. Did Peet’s moved to gate 12 from gate 18? Gate Guru can help. Additionally, the app has a review function so if you aren’t sure where to eat, let the wisdom of crowds guide you. The interface is a bit clunky as you can’t search by airport, only by Read More
Five apps for NYC tourists
Calendar16 Tue, 04 Aug 2009 22:30:00 UTC +00:00
I was in NYC for a week and feeling a bit bored, so I took a look at a passel (anyone still use that word?) of NYC tourist apps, that I picked up last week for the heck of it. NYC Subway 24-Hour KICKMap - $1.99. Rating: Horrible. This is a generic subway map that's "24 hours" because you can tap the day/night button to switch the background from white to black. Wow! Hold your finger on a station for 3 seconds to bring up the address of the subway stop and often a disconnected phone number. Tap 'Alerts' and the app tosses you to the Manhattan Transit Authority site in Safari. HopStop - Free. Rating: Wonderful. Tell it where you want to go and it'll get you there via public transportation, just like the website hopstop.com, but with GPS built-in. UpNext 3D NYC - $2.99. Rating: Meh. Useful for finding Read More

Perfect!!!
iTunes11204 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
There is now an iPhone application that works perfectly with my list of contacts for navigating through the Big Apple and beyond. Keep up the great work guys!!!!!
Helps get around in NYC
e + n 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
I used this yesterday for the first time, and it was great. A couple of hitches with the graphics, but it makes getting around in NYC much easier. Can't speak for the subway system in Hawaii, but for buses and subways in NY, you can't beat it.
Solid
Brickyboy 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Just like the website, so you know what to expect.
Finally
Seek up 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
Works really well. Like how it uses addresses from your contacts. Great for NYC
Great app
LoMa82 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Finally, the Hopstop application! A little slow to load, but definitely a great app. Exactly what I've been waiting for. Necessity for visitors and residents!
Finally!
futurismo 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Love this app. This is what I have been waiting for. Simpler and more elegant than HopStop's web and wap sites, more powerful than Google Maps transit.
Works like the site
halwaterman 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
If you use the web site, then you will be familiar with how to use this app. Simple, functional, practical. I like the new feature where it will estimate the cost of your taxi drive and give you the option to call the cab companies directly from the program. Note: I have not actually taken one of thes estimated trips to see if the pricing is accurate. I'm sure traffic etc will affect the rates, but it's a good way to at least get a ballpark figure before taking the ride.
One of the best...
Anthonya1g 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
This is the best app to get around New York...
Needs ability to save route offline
JW223 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
Good app. Needs the ability to save a route offline or email it so it can be accessed with no service (as would be the case if I am in the subway and don't remember where I need to transfer).
NYC3
Matthew_Ryan 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
Works for me. No problem yet with finding addresses. Wish you could set default city though so I wouldn't have to type in NY everytime.
Would be nice if it, you know, worked.
jsf23 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
If this app would allow any manually entered addresses or intersections to work, and not be rejected as invalid, it's be awesome. I'll just stick with Hopstop's mobile site instead.
Does a good job.
Thillseeker 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
I love this app!
good app
MrSmith443 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
good app, like it, use it
Pretty much worthless
TopCoch 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
Won't function without a zip code. Useless.
Can't find full addresses
NeedsWork 2.0 stars Version: 1.1
I entered two full addresses with zip for NYC. It couldn't find an Astoria address and, therefore I couldn't map to it. (assumed the Astoria address was a manhattan address). Not very useful.
Not as happy as I'd thought i'd be
Eraid 1.0 stars Version: 1.1
Doesn't correctly find the address I put in. It always suggest wrong address. I hope they can fix the problem. Guess back to google maps...
Metro North doesn't work
Lars3 3.0 stars Version: 1.1
The description says this app works for Metro North, but I can't get it to recognize New Haven, or anywhere else in the Connecticut line.
...dumb
Agddgcstnd 2.0 stars Version: 1.1
It's kind of really stupid for anyone to have even if you have a basic idea of nyc (I live here) so why not just learn the subway and not look like a stupid tourist? I does what it says. Not worth keeping for new yorkers
Probably the best app for getting around NYC
Jeff Pearce 5.0 stars Version: 1.1
Great app!!! The best one for getting around New York's subway system!!!
Great App, does what it states.
Bearfn 4.0 stars Version: 1.1
Works as stated, a few request for future releases.
Hoping this works, but...
rompe ese 86 3.0 stars Version: 1.1
It still crashes on start up.
Good for NYC
Lbk529 5.0 stars Version: 1.1
I have a basic knowlege of NYC so when they give me an estimation of what address I gave them it was ok it just was perfect to let me know which subways to take
Ads for the App...in the App?!?
rtclyde 3.0 stars Version: 1.1
This does a passable job for a free App. But why on earth would you run advertisements inside the App imploring us to download the App?!? That's just silly...
Best app around
zhoffman 5.0 stars Version: 1.1
This is simply the best app around, especially for DC. It has the bus system, which no other app can say, and it provides detailed directions using both of them.
Perfect
cs.h 5.0 stars Version: 1.1
An NYC Godsend.
After a few freezes, a good app emerges
eddit13 3.0 stars Version: 1.1
I was stuck on a white screen multiple times after installing. I restarted. Reinstalled. Freeze. I was about to give up and voilà...here we go. I live in NY and Hopstop is great. Hopstop for iPhone is almost great. Needs schedules. Unlike Maps, this doesnt have schedules. Like Maps, you have to leave out apt, suite and floor info. It's free so for me this is a great start. Fix the crashes and add schedules and the App Store rating might improve. Still I think ppl should give hopstop for iPhone a shot. It's FREE.
Best app around
zhoffman 5.0 stars Version: 1.1
This is simply the best app around, especially for DC. It has the bus system, which no other app can say, and it provides detailed directions using both of them. It would be nice if it showed the directions in a version of google maps or on the metro maps that the transit agencies provide.
You get what you pay for
nochum 1.0 stars Version: 1.1
Gave me terrible directions when I tested it out in NYC. If you live in NYC and don't use the bus, itrans is a much better program and it's worth the 2 bucks.
Love It!!!!!
Blue wisdom 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
I'm a big fan of the website already, so I am thrilled to have this on my phone. So far it is pretty simple to use and I love that I can still get information about subway diversions, etc.
Finally
Camilabr 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
I can't believe it took so long to have this app. I was waiting for it! It took so long that I was almost giving it up and using google maps public transit ( which is getting better everyday) the bad, and this is really bad, is that this app doesn't have an address book as the web version. I hope it's fixed soon.
OK in NYC, useless elsewhere
red1974tradesman 1.0 stars Version: 1.1
This app needs major improvements. It's useless when you travel to a different city where you are not familair with the mass transit system.
Works great
Doctor Jennie 4.0 stars Version: 1.1
What's up with the whining? Works great! No zip needed for NYC subway directions. Just like the website. Bus info would be helpful and 5 star-worthy.
You need to enter the FULL address
Erlyn3 4.0 stars Version: 1.1
This makes me wish I had an iPhone instead of the iPod Touch, since this is pretty much the only app which has the BUS routes as well as the subway (and it's FREE).
Frustrating
Cam12 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
I can't count how many times I tried entering in an address and I see "address not found" which is very annoying. I even tried my own house as the destination and said it couldn't be found. This application has only worked twice and unless the devs don't intend to update I will b deleting it from my phone.
"Address Not Found"
officialbrianjohnson 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
Manually entering an address results in a "address not found" response. I've only been able to receive directions with addresses already programed in my contacts. Hopefully an update will address this issue. (no pun intended)
Trouble reading addresses in NY
Campfire Steve 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
Does not have the smarts of Google Maps when searching NY addresses.
A+
psdcfc 5.0 stars Version: 1.2
The new update is awesome. It recognize the adresses. Works just like the website now.
5*
Tacman93 5.0 stars Version: 1.2
Works perfect and smooth
useless
2old4this 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
I'm in Boston, but it keeps trying to confirm that my destination is in manhattan. nice try.
This app can't find The borough of Brooklyn
defilmj 2.0 stars Version: 1.0
Try starting at the major hub that connects Long Island to New York, "Atlantic Ave and Flatbush Ave Brooklyn"? aka "the long island rail road". The largest commuter railroad in the United States of America! People complain. that Hopstop can't find you unless you live AT the subway stop. Well it appears to not do that well sometimes as well. Back to food old itrans. You have to do the work yourself if you don't know where the nearest subway is, bit you can easily find that on maps, which comes with your iPhone, then go to trans and map your route. It is a pain, but it is better than fumbling with Hopstop's inability to find major Intersections and landmarks, or parts of NYC boroughs. Seems to work better in Manhattan. Maybe the other 4 boroughs aren't relevent?? Needs much work. yes, itrans provides up to min subway alerts for all lines. I have no love for itrans, just noting the method I used before hopstop, and appears I still have to use. :(
