Great app- lots of good extras too
sergei1 5.0 stars Version: 1.3
Ive been using this app for the past week and it's been great. Lots of recipes, great variations, and a really great shopping list that you can email to yourself- something you can't do with a traditional cookbook. I don't have the cookbook, so this is a great option. Not sure if I'd buy both a book and this though....but i Love it

Billy-Balldotcom 5.0 stars Version: 1.3
This app is terrific! It's more than just a cookbook, it's like having Mark Bittman actually there helping you! Incredibly interactive from suggesting recipes to building your shopping list. There is no better cookbook around for the individual who is not interested in pretension and now here is a great app that makes the process even easier. Bitt is the man!
Like it
komet44 5.0 stars Version: 1.3
Nicely set up and easy to use so far. It really is like having Mark Bittman in the kitchen.
Fantastic
Gustav Mahler Addict 5.0 stars Version: 1.3
Admittedly, I was a fan of HTCE (book / iPhone and iPad app) before this improved version. But this brings it to a new level. It has several great new features such as a place to take notes, an organized list of timers and bookmarks, and even the ability to prevent the iPad from dimming without tapping the screen. I know I will use this all the time, as I did the previous version. HTCE taught me hike to cook, and I am grateful to be able to do so now with even more convenience.
Love it
freeball 5.0 stars Version: 1.3
Very useful- like it even better than the book, which is my favorite cookbook!
Impressive
DWC in Colo 5.0 stars Version: 1.3
A good example of what an iPad app can be. A huge fan of M. Bittman, I was a little grumbly about paying again since I already had the iPhone app. But then I was also grumbly that it was taking so long to do an iPad version. Now I know why it took so long--not just a high-res port if the iPhone version. Worth the wait and worth the money. Good job!
Love it.
mizzula 5.0 stars Version: 1.3
Great multifunctional app. Love that I can sync up with my calendar for menu planning and that I can write shopping lists too. Really worth the money.
Love it!
nrj925 5.0 stars Version: 1.3
Timers are the best!
Suprising
Dave Foodmeister 5.0 stars Version: 1.3
I found this app very enjoyable to use. It had a large number of recipies, was well designed, and I thought the built in timers were a great idea.
Very nice app
ahstone 5.0 stars Version: 1.3
Great interface and content. Not just a cook book, this really uses the iPad's capabilities.
Excellent ...500% better than Food Network!
4bot 5.0 stars Version: 1.5.2
One, this wonderful app actually loads (as opposed to "toss a coin" Food Network app) Two, this app has clear menus Three, fun hints Four, timers built into the recipe...brilliant Five, dependable, and built for different needs Six, Thanks!!
Love It
JoanLS 5.0 stars Version: 1.3.1
The iPhone app was great but this iPad version is superfragilistic!
Beautiful and amazing!
StealthDawg 5.0 stars Version: 1.3.1
This is a must get app for anyone who loves cooking. Just so much attention to detail. By far the best cooking app on the app store!
Almost too good to be true
Pema2 5.0 stars Version: 1.3.1
I loved the book and find the app much more more fun to nose around in. Witty, beautifully executed.
Outstanding app. Great value
DrKoob 5.0 stars Version: 1.3.1
Bittman's excellent book has been transformed into an outstanding app. And it is an outstanding upgrade from the iPhone app. It is well worth the money. If you cook you should have this app.
Simply amazing
eggrollstan 5.0 stars Version: 1.3.1
I was on the fence about paying for this app after already purchasing the iPhone version, but after an impulse moment and two recipes later, I have no regrets!
Overall, great app!
Cookin guy 4.0 stars Version: 1.3.1
Good functional app, with VERY good content. I would, however like the ability to add my own recipes.
Awesome!
mhmolinaro 5.0 stars Version: 1.3.1
Great as expected from my favorite cookbook author. Mark Bittman is terrific and so is this app!
Not Just The Book As a Lazy App; It's The Book As It Always Should Have Been
MKinLA 5.0 stars Version: 1.5
I was a little bummed when I found HTCE as an app shortly after buying it as an e-book. Here, I cynically thought, was another way to get me to pay more for content I already owned - just in a slightly altered package. While the great recipes of HTCE are, of course, here, the experience using the app is entirely new. Want to know precisely what braising is? Tap on the technique & a window pops up. Ratings from other readers give you a sense of what you may first want to try first. The app takes advantage of the inherent, interactive capabilities of the iPad that's every bit as revolutionary as the first edition of HTCE. Mark Bittman & Culinate have done their homework & delivered an app for the home cooking novice & enthusiast alike that'll inspire you to eat better every day.
Great!
DaveNJ2010 4.0 stars Version: 1.5.2
Even better than the iPhone app! Only thing I'd like, especially for $10, would be some video demos and lessons.
Gets so many things right
atraver 5.0 stars Version: 1.5.2
This app, put bluntly, is awesome. There are a ton of recipes, the instructions and ingredients are laid out well and are, more importantly, consistent across every recipe I've come across. No missing yields or mislabeled durations, everything's there. The timers are excellent at keeping track the individual components of the recipes. The shopping list "just works." The descriptions of basic cooking techniques is also great. Is the app perfect, though? No, there are a few things I'd love to see: * Add the ability to email a recipe to yourself. This functionality already exists to email a shopping list to yourself, and to print a copy of the recipe if you have an AirPrint-enabled printer, but I had to take a picture of my iPad's screen with my phone so I knew what to do when I arrived at my brother's house, ready to cook. * Tapping the star (favorite) icon marks a recipe as a favorite, but tapping it again does not remove it from your favorites. I've accidentally tapped this a few times, and I wish I could just as easily remove the recipe from my favorites. * Video demonstrations of the techniques laid out in some of the recipes would be a "nice to have," but I'd take not having them over bloating the application's size with their inclusion.
One more thing
Blue_Geist 4.0 stars Version: 1.5.2
This app is well organized with a lot of helpful tips, especially for those with missing culinary skills. Although it would be better if I was able to add my own recipes to the collection.
even better with metric system added
Dr_Venkman 5.0 stars Version: 1.5
truly international now, it saves those who live abroad with the metric system.
Sublime...
nanda73 5.0 stars Version: 1.5
This app is a great example of both form and content well done. I love Bittman's book and follow his work on NY Times. Obviously, I loved the content, but I have to say that this app transforms the book (and additional recipes in the future, I hope) into a great form for the iPad. Great design, wonderful interface and awesome content. I love the section for adding my own notes; I hope that the developer continues to work on the feature-set (for example, multiple ways to organize favorites)
Bittman rocks
Albert self 5.0 stars Version: 1.5
So what does mark bittman make for dinner? This tells you in simple easy and accessible recipes with simple variations- I like the oriental recipes- I always thought I had spend 12 bucks for pad Thai, now it's a quick staple at the dinner table, I get to make it the way I like (less sweet more shrimp and lime) and guess what? It's easy! Thanks mark!!
Best cookbook ever!
Smilnjack 5.0 stars Version: 1.5.2
This app is what the iPad was meant for. The most convenient and complete cookbook and cooking reference ever.
Excellent
Borticus 5.0 stars Version: 1.5.2

Teh awesomeness
Tiepolo 5.0 stars Version: 1.5.2
Just got the new iPad 2 and this was one of the first iPad apps I bought. I love it. Lots of awesome recipes and super easy to use.
Excellent
sanookbkk 5.0 stars Version: 1.5.2
I held off on buying this app because I already had the book and iPhone app. But, finally decided to buy it. I'm so glad I did. First of all, it looks great on the iPad. And it's very fast! So easy to look up things quickly, do searches, etc. And, of course, it's a great source of excellent cooking information.
Use this almost daily; beautiful and useful
Cbbbbb 5.0 stars Version: 1.6
One of the few apps I use most. This is the only cooking app I use regularly, as it's all you'll need.
needs send to instpaper
gever1 3.0 stars Version: 1.6
needs this feature similar to epicurious, or at least do not limit emailing recipe to 3 per month
Great app! Worth buying!
twmusic 5.0 stars Version: 1.6
The app itself is one of the highest quality of the 200+ I've used. Easy to use (timer built in to recipes was a great touch), easy to find what you are looking for, and have not had it crash after many uses. As far as the recipes, they are superb! I have not had one that I disliked, and I have not had to alter any to my tastes. The Beef Stroganoff was the biggest surprise I've come across...I've had some bad stroganoff in high end restaurants, and this recipe was fantastic. My wife and 10 year old both said it was the best dish they've ever eaten.Summary: great app, great recipes, and a lot of helpful info!
improve what you already know and more
VOofSJ 5.0 stars Version: 1.6
While I'd love more pretty pix I'm already in love with this cookbook. All the basics and more. Easy easy easy to use. You need some cooking fundamentals under your belt for it to be truly easy, but still...I'd recommend this to any novice. Even makes knife selection easy. When I travel I stay where there is a kitchen so having it stored in my iPad is delicious.Chose the recipe and add the ingredients to the built in shopping list which is simple to edit and organize. Lots of suggestions for variations to the basic recipe which means easy to customize to in-season or regional ingredients. The timers built into the recipes is genius. Instructions for carving, chopping, and so much more. Not sure what to do? There's an answer in here. Needless to say I'm impressed and think this is a bargain for the price.
Great app
Patti Chambers 4.0 stars Version: 1.6
Mark Bittman is great and I love this app!
Simply the best!
mostubb46 5.0 stars Version: 1.6
Everything you need is right here.
Easy to use
cr1ck3t 4.0 stars Version: 1.6
Just got this app. Easy to use. Liked the timers although I did not use it. Love mark Bittman's style of cooking. The always on button is handy while using the app as recipe while cooking. Only wish the app can be used on an iPhone too. (why it is 4 stars instead of 5).
Terrific Cooking reference and resource
Debmk 5.0 stars Version: 1.6
Highly recommend. Easy to use. Extremely intuitive.
Well done!
CaliforniaExpert 5.0 stars Version: 1.6
Love this app. Very easy to use with loads of terrific recipes!
Good app
Toohardtofindone 4.0 stars Version: 1.6.2
Nice user interface. Good content. I especially like that I can add notes to recipes as I do in paper-based cookbooks. The grocery list is a nice touch. Wish it had a calendar connection so I could meal plan within the app or link to Google calendar.
Needs More Photos
DLMSantiago 3.0 stars Version: 1.6.2
Very nice app for the basics of a recipe, but would really benefit from photos for every one (photos per stage would be ideal). Right now, only the few featured recipes appear to have photos. I'm the kind of person that really wants to know what a plating will/should look like when I'm selecting a menu.
Good recipes, clear instructions!!
CHERYL CRONEY 5.0 stars Version: 1.6.2
Very nice user interface on iPad. Larger screen has been well utilized.
Better than expected
Murphygirl2005 5.0 stars Version: 1.6.2
This app is really so much better than I thought it would be. It's easy to navigate, has variations on many of the recipes, builds a well organized shopping list, helps you get your timing right, and on and on. I'm very glad I downloaded it. I don't hesitate in the least recommending it.
Fantastic app
Digitoes 5.0 stars Version: 1.6.2
Can i make this 6 stars? This app is amazing and each recipe seems to be the most delicious version. I really love how the shopping list combines each item if you have to buy it for more than one recipe. Oh and, you can sort it by aisles at the store. Very handy! Besides great recipes, the "book" is really a cooking course with great illustrations on techniques and how tos. Throw in the fact that its on my iPad and its almost my dream cookbook. The only thing I would add that would really take it over the top is to have a menu planning area where you could have a list of all the recipes for a meal or a month. Thanks for the best cookbook I own!
Great app
Steph461 5.0 stars Version: 1.6.2
Great reference to have in the kitchen
My new "go to" cookbook
Jim Gomes 5.0 stars Version: 1.6.2
So far every time I've tried a recipe from this app it hasn't disappointed. It's now the first reference I turn to when it's my turn to cook dinner... Which seems to be happening more often now!
Can make it better....
MARIA SANCHEZ 1.0 stars Version: 1.6.2
In my opinion, I believe this app is great. The reason I gave only 3 stars is because I see that all the recipes don't have pictures and I need a cookbook that does so I know how it's suppose to look like. If anyone can make that change, I will be very grateful. So please put photos in all the recipes...
Great App!
Monroe1055 5.0 stars Version: 1.6.2
I love this App! The grocery list feature is awesome. I am glad I purchased it. I will be using this often.
