Macworld 2010: Steve and Mike's excellent HP adventure
Calendar16 Tue, 16 Feb 2010 14:00:00 UTC +00:00
One of the highlights of TUAW's visit to Macworld Expo 2010 was a pre-show tour of the HP booth on Wednesday, February 10. HP has a long and storied history with Apple, with both Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak working for the company at one time before founding Apple. The company has created many Mac-compatible printers over the years, and has worked quite closely with Apple in recent years to insure that drivers for current and past printers are included in Mac OS X. HP's team welcomed us to their booth as the show was still being set up. Eric Killian, Worldwide Training Manager for SMB Inkjet Printing Systems, showed off two brand-new printers for the Mac; the OfficeJet 4500 All-in-one and the OfficeJet Pro 8500 Premier. The OfficeJet 4500 is not currently listed on the HP site, but we'll update this post when a link to the new member of Read More
Read More
By Rene Ritchie, Friday, Jun 26, 2009 | Macworld formulates word of HP’s foray into iPhone application development, and it’s both nostalgic for calculator enthusiasts, and interesting from a premium price point: When run in landscape mode, each app uses the original ROM code and provides an exact visual replica of the actual horizontal-format calculator, making it familiar to users of the originals. The $15 HP 12c and $20 HP 12c Platinum provide the same business-focused functions and formulas as the hardware models, and the $30 HP 15c includes all of the original’s scientific algorithms and calculation sequences, including matrix, root, and complex-number functions. All three apps are also, like their hardware counterparts, programmable. Here’s the rundown again: Anyone compelled to pick up one of those heavy crunchers, and if so, which one, what makes it compelling, and does it feel enough like the hardware version for you? So, um, yeah, about that price thing ... but BOING!

30$.
Just like the Original
Olde RPN Fan 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
It's the 1980's all over again: 501s, Vuarnets, Sperry Top Siders, and the HP 15C! The marketing gals and boys at HP figured this one out: All of us who used it in the early 80's in our physics, calculus, and engineering courses are now in our mid to late 40's and we can afford to spend the $30 on this reincarnation of an absolute classic . My only minor complaint is that the key click sound is not a true representation of the original, but this is minor (it actually has a slightly antique sound quality, more so than the original). Also, in the image -- which is very impressive (exact to the original, except missing the aluminum ring, the HEWLETT PACKARD logo, and the "ON" button has been replaced with "MENU"), I would have stripped off some of the wasteful upper "aluminum trim" (in particular, the canted top portion) and dedicated a few more millimeters of space to make the buttons slightly larger. Minor quibbles, still an awesome app.
Very useful App Scientific/Engineering types, though a bit pricey

As a long time user of a HP-15C I was thrilled when I read that HP developed an iPhone app, as I always have my iPhone on me, but not necessarily my HP-15C. I did pause for several minutes due to the price, but decided to jump in b/c I use the original so much.
Exact HP 15C RPN!
Meltronx 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Great replica of a 15C calculator! In portrait mode it's a basic 15C RPN caculator, put in lanscape (turn it length wise) and is an exact, fully functional version of a HP 15C RPN ( Reverse Polish Notation ) calculator. Not a game the real thing, as a well done App.
Overpriced and Worse than Others
Tinathir 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
Not nearly as well done as some earlier "imitations". The graphics are poorer, many of the UI details (like the reference on the back) are not as well presented, and there seems to be no way to control the volume of key clicks. Way overpriced.
Great
Jerry.Raia 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
The key click sounds have got to go!
Nice replica
PickyDick 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
But it needs quick access to the back panel of the calculator. The real thing has valuable information. Missing this considerably affects the value of this replica, thus costing 2 stars here for such an expensive app. Update -- I just found the valuable information found on the back of the real thing (select the logo HP 15C). Like others, I find the graphics to be less than optimal.. So, still 4 stars, not 5.
Might almost be worth it, oddly
Gchpaco 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
It costs too much, the manual is nearly useless, the key click sounds are horrible and it doesn't support copy/paste. Still a fantastic calculator, and I surprise myself with how useful I find it considering I mostly bought it for nostalgia value.
Thanks for the memory...
80'sEngineer 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
I would have paid $100 to buy this calculator off the store shelf. Good used ones on e-bay go for more than this. I even signed petitions to encourage HP to bring it back. Now I have it again in one device. It works like the original. I am quite pleased. To defeat the sound just flip the 3G speaker off...no big deal. (Don't get me wrong, I would appreciate a program setting to do this, but it's a lost star in my rating). The extra portrait RPN is a quick and handy addition. Overall, I am quite pleased.
Signature HP RPN Scientific Calculator is GREAT!
Joisey Paul 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
This is truly a great app. Functions just like the original and remembers settings! It is wonderful to be able to carry around the best scientific calculator that I have ever used (I still use my HP 15C on a daily basis at my desk.) The manual is a duplicate of the manual provided with the calculator, but is very difficult to use. It does NOT save your place when you leave it and come back (really challenging to use when trying out some tutorial on the calculator. Even an old hand like me needs to recall how to do some of the very powerful operations and programming for this calculator.) I'd like to see this fixed and I'd also like HP to provide an indexed PDF of the manual for your desktop as part of the purchase price, to be able to use it in a more natural format for tutorials and such. I am very happy with the app and feel that the $30 price tag is a good value.
Perfect RPN Calculator -- Just like original but better
Fotohead 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
I love the horizontal mode, just like my original 15c. I know just where the functions are. In vertical mode it is only the functions that most of us use daily. Sure you can buy a zillion RPN calculators for the Iphone, but this one has boatloads of class and for those of us that can afford more than 99 cents. If you really owned and enjoyed the original 15c, no other rpn calculator compares.
Ach! The clicks!!!
Biox 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
The key clicks are extremely annoying/distracting. Give users a way to adjust the volume and disable the clicking altogether (without altering the ringer volume).
Way Overpriced (paying for nostalgia?) and Lousy Built-in Manual
BobP1776 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
The 15C calculator app works, and of course it is way more useful than the calculator Apple includes in the iPhone, but a $30 price point is just silly for what you get. In addition, the built-in manual (accessible via the "Menu" button that replaces the "ON" button) is a bad joke. It is just chockablock with typos and ridiculous formatting errors. Did no one at HP even TRY to proof read it? And it only includes up through page 64 of the original product manual -- i.e., "Part 1". The REAL product manual is 293 pages, plus a separate 221 page book on Advanced Functions. So the built-in manual includes *NO* details on programming the 15C, on using its Advanced Functions (such as Complex Number math), the explanatory Appendices, or the function summaries. AND THE ONLY WAY TO NAVIGATE THROUGH IT IS TO SCROLL! There are no links, no index, and no search mechanism. Just awful.
much faster than the SCI-15C
Scientist_01 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
I already own the SCI-15C, but could not resist trying the HP version. I don't know how the emulators differ but the HP version is much, much faster. Using an example from the manual, integrating cos(4x-sinx) from 0 to Pi, the HP version integrates in less than a second, while the SCI-15C version takes maybe 35 seconds.
Great start
kmrwk 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
Tried some other RPN calculators but nothing beats the original layout of the 15C, which I use at home but don't carry with me. Good first version, but as some of the other reviewers have noted there are some limitations:
Crashes!!!!
Dr. Eyes 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
Every so often the calculator crashes and becomes "FROZEN" in between landscape and portrait modes. You have to delete the program and reinstall it to use the calculator. Very, very, very frustrating especially for $30 bucks.
Like running into an old friend
PDC Larry 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
This iPhone 15c calculator from HP is a real joy, complete with front, back and manual. if you've loved the 15c in your younger days you need this! I know there are imitators in the App Store, but I've always trusted HP implicitly, so I'm more comfortable that the answers I get from this 15c are right.
Quit Working
conr2286 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
It was wonderful, exactly what I wanted. Then one day it quit working and now it crashes when I attempt to load the application. I was unable to find any support for the application by following the support link on the application's iTunes page (and on the "...please visit HP 15C Scientific Calculator Support" link on the "Rate this application" page. At this price, it ought to work or at least have a link to make it work. I'm hoping for a new, fixed version.
Just one problem...
Gollnick 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
This is a most excellent application. I love it... except one detail: the annoying key clicks which, as far as I can tell, can't be turned off. You can turn them down, but the volume of the key clicks on the HP15C calculator is tied to the volume of the phone ringer so if you turn them down, you're also turning down your phone which will stay down even after you exit the calculator ap. A real HP15C makes almost no sound when the keys are pressed, so why HP included annoyingly-loud key clicks in this emulation is beyond me. I am very hopeful that they will come out with an update to remove the key clicks.
This clicking is driving me crazy...
Omnikurt 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
It's tough to cough up $30 for a virtual calculator when HP is selling hardware based calcs on the web site for $33 (HP33). However, as an engineer, this was a must have. So far the calculator has worked exactly as expected. I have to agree with a couple of the other reviews that the key click sounds are ridiculous. They are so loud it's as if there's a woodpecker in your office. Yes you can switch them off by putting your iPhone in silent mode, but there should definitely be an option in the menu to shut them off. I dinged it one star because of this omission.
HP15c for the iPhone
DieselBound 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
Oreos, Kleenex, Crescent Wrench, HP15c, ... It's about time this happened, or the HP15c went back into production. Just gotta get rid of that very uncharacteristic key click. That key click is very out of character for the real HP15c, hence the four stars. I like how the back of the calculator was included as content in the iPhone version.
Memories

Excellent conversion. Thanks HP!
Stoped adding
EmoKid696 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Ok it's the best calc I ever had on my phone but not even an hour later of downloading this app and it stoped leting me add multipliy and divide... Plz fix this!!!
Pricey but worth it!
DrJayD 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
I hesitated on this purchase for a while because of the price, but I am glad I finally took the plunge. Works just like my real 15c but the benefit is that it is always in my pocket. I can live with the clicks that so many other reviewers didn't like. It's a small price to pay to get the 15c back & not have to use any of those other crummy iPhone calculators! The 15c is very fast to load & works perfectly.
Great, but fix the click sound!
Ern78545789 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
I was very happy to find this app, but I find the key click sound too loud. It is incredibly annoying. So frustrating -- it would be a simple fix to make it quieter and allow a silent option. HP, please post an update!
Thanks Guys!!!
Mikeisgoodforyou 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Thanks for porting the 15C for the iPhone/iPod Touch...Works as good as the real thing! So are you going to offer more of your great calcs for the iPhone??? Keep up the good work and thank you!
