How to Watch Hulu on the Apple TV
Calendar16 Thu, 12 Jan 2012 19:00:41 UTC +00:00
You’ve probably heard that rumors that an official Hulu app for the Apple TV is complete and ready to go, yet Apple is holding it back from being released. Apple is worried about Hulu+ eating into its iTunes sales, so the app has been placed on hold indefinitely. For Hulu fans, that’s quite disappointing, especially considering the service is available on pretty much every other platform known to man, including the iPad, and iPhone. But there is a way to get Hulu running on the Apple TV right now. This guide will show you how to take advantage of the Seas0nPass jailbreak so that you can watch Hulu Plus on your Apple TV. Step 1: Jailbreak Your Apple TV using our tutorial and video guide below. Step 2: Install aTV Flash (black) on your Apple TV using our tutorial and video guide below. Step 3: Configure XBMC and PlayOn to establish Read More
How to go PC free with iOS 5 and your iPhone or iPad
Calendar16 Fri, 14 Oct 2011 19:07:35 UTC +00:00
One big advantage of iOS 5 is the ability to use it independently of a Mac or PC. Ironic, since another key new feature is iCloud, which serves to bring the two closer together at the same time. Here’s how to cut the cord if you’d rather your mobile devices and traditional computers live separate (but connected) lives. Once you’ve completed the iOS 5 update, you no longer need to be connected to iTunes at all. For anything. No, really. It may be hard for a longtime Apple mobile user to wrap their head around, but all the business of setting up, activating and other initial duties can be handled away from the computer. This does come with a couple caveats, however: Apple now lets you navigate the entire process of getting your iPad or iPhone set up with helpful intro screens on the device itself. This looks much like what Read More

Hulu Plus app adds HDMI output for iPad 2
Calendar16 Thu, 01 Sep 2011 23:15:00 UTC +00:00
Hulu has updated its Hulu Plus iOS app, and this update provides the return of a feature that some users will really appreciate: HDMI output to video is back. That means that the Hulu app will now once again output HDMI video to a TV or monitor that you connect it to, so you can watch the service through your iPad wherever you are. Good stuff. The removal of the feature was likely the result of content restriction deals or platform issues, but Hulu has apparently resolved those problems, so HDMI away. The app itself is free, but of course requires a Hulu Plus subscription to access the content. Glad to see this feature is back in, so those with the right setup can use it. Read More

TV on your iPad: A roundup of useful apps
Calendar16 Thu, 02 Dec 2010 18:30:00 UTC +00:00
The iTunes Store is a great place to find episodes of TV shows that you might have missed, or even catch up on past seasons, but it's only one of several options available. Netflix offers a free iPad app to watch movies and TV shows for those who have signed up for their $8/month streaming service (or higher). An iPhone/iPod touch app is also available. Netflix still has more shows available via DVD than instant streaming, but there's still plenty there. Hulu has a free Hulu Plus app for iPad or iPhone/iPod touch for those who use their $8/month service. Unfortunately some shows which are available at Hulu.com are not available to Hulu Plus users, but there is still a lot of content available. My biggest complaint with Hulu is that their content contains ads and their catalog changes, so something that is available today might not be viewable tomorrow. The Read More

Hulu+ updated with new iPad features, $7.99 subscription
Calendar16 Thu, 18 Nov 2010 12:22:52 UTC +00:00
By Andrew Wray, Thursday, Nov 18, 2010 | Hulu+ has been updated for the iPad and iPhone to includes new features and better yet — a new, lower subscription price of $7.99. Hulu launched on iOS back in late June followed by an immediate follow up of the Hulu+ subscription service at $9.99. Unfortunately it doesn’t look like the update supports Apple’s new iOS 4.2 AirPlay feature (yet?) Let us know how the update is working for you and what you think of the new pricing — does it hit the sweet spot yet? Read More
Hands On: Hulu Plus for Roku (iOS Version 2.0 Too!)

Posted 11/17/2010 at 1:45pm | by J.R. Bookwalter Tech fans will have plenty to be thankful for come Turkey Day next week -- The Beatles are finally on iTunes, Google Voice is on the iPhone, Twitter has push notifications for iOS and Hulu Plus is finally out of preview mode, officially landing on Roku boxes everywhere. We’ve happily been using Hulu Plus for more than two months on both the iPad and iPhone 4 as well as at home on a Playstation 3 -- at the expense of our former Dish HD subscription, trading a $70+ monthly bill for a $9.99 per month bill from Hulu, which was just reduced further to $7.99 now that the service is officially open to everyone. Now that our original $99 Roku box also has Hulu Plus, here’s a look at how it stacks up against the other methods already in use. Installation We fired Read More
Hulu today released an updated version of its [App Store] application for iOS devices, bringing several enhancements including a new split-screen player for the iPad version and improved management of subscriptions and queues. What's new - New split-screen player on iPad - Enhanced queue and subscription management - Improved playback performance - New thumbnail viewer on iPad - Miscellaneous bug fixes The update comes just as Hulu announces that the Hulu Plus premium service has exited preview mode and is now officially launched to the public. With that announcement, Hulu has dropped the subscription price on Hulu Plus to $7.99/month from the $9.99/month rate that was charged during the preview period. Customers who signed up during the preview period will be credited for the difference. I am happy to announce that today we are launching the Hulu Plus subscription service out of preview. With this launch, we are proud to offer Read More
Hulu+ For iDevices Officially Launches, Lowers Price
Calendar16 Wed, 17 Nov 2010 17:00:43 UTC +00:00
If you’ve been mulling over a Hulu+ subscription or waiting for the elusive preview invite, you might be interested to know Hulu+ has exited preview mode to officially launch and has lowered its price from $9.99 to $7.99/month. The two dollar decrease is likely attributed to Hulu trying to compete more with Netflix, which has made clear they are shifting towards a streaming-based service as priority, as users continue to use the DVD-by-mail feature to a lesser extent. You can download Hulu+ in the App Store for your iPhone 4 or iPad. But what about those of you that have already been using Hulu+ at the original price? They have good news for you, too… Hulu emailed current subscribers to inform them they would receive a $2 credit for each month they’ve been a preview subscriber. Since they launched the service back in early summer, that can amount to a free Read More
Hulu+ App Store Reviews: Fending off the Naysayers
Calendar16 Thu, 07 Oct 2010 15:14:38 UTC +00:00
Hulu+ just updated their app last week, so I thought this would be a good time to address the absurd amount of negative reviews they have in the App Store. I love Hulu+.  I got my invite August 1st and have been using the app on my iPhone 4 several times a week to watch shows — catching up with Glee while at work (shhh!), and watching the first season of Modern Family at the gym (FYI—laughing on the treadmill will immediately provoke stares and glares.)  I think the Hulu service is smart and having it readily accessible on my iPhone 4 is convenient. So why are there so many negative reviews of it in the App Store (It’s currently at 1.5 stars)?  Most comments seem to be some variation of these complaints: The problem with this complaint is that these folks haven’t done their research or paid attention to advertising: Read More
Netflix app hits the iPhone and iPod touch
Calendar16 Thu, 26 Aug 2010 15:00:00 UTC +00:00
Here's some great news for Netflix subscribers. The free Netflix app has finally made it to the iPhone and iPod touch. Netflix members on plans as low as US$8.99 a month can instantly watch movies and TV shows streamed from the Netflix servers. This has been an eagerly-awaited app (the iPad version was available at launch), and I downloaded it this morning to give it a test. It works fine on both 3G and WiFi, and the 3G feature is a bit of a surprise given AT&T's position of holding back on some streaming apps. Slingbox, for example, found dealing with AT&T tough sledding, but the company finally did get the app approved for 3G. My TUAW colleague Richard Gaywood points out that with many AT&T users no longer on unlimited data plans, the company may see apps like this as a profit center. The new Hulu Plus app also works Read More
HBO iPad app scheduled to arrive in six months
Calendar16 Wed, 18 Aug 2010 15:00:00 UTC +00:00
Do you need to catch up with Entourage and Curb Your Enthusiasm? Do you want to re-watch that interview from Real Sports? Soon, you'll be able to do just that on your iPad. HBO Co-President Eric Kessler said that the premium cable channel is planning on releasing an iPad app (dubbed HBO Go) that will enable viewers to view a library of up to 800 hours per month of the channel's movies and TV shows. Best of all, if you're already a paying HBO subscriber, you can access content on the iPad app for free. The content streaming app ecosystem on the iPad includes ABC Player, Netflix and Hulu Plus, and HBO Go is set to join this space. HBO plans to release HBO Go for the iPad in six months, which means that the app will likely be on the App Store sometime during the early part of 2011. Read More
The 30 Best iPhone Apps So Far This Year
Calendar16 Sat, 07 Aug 2010 18:12:54 UTC +00:00
Editor’s note: This guest post is written by Alex Ahlund, the former CEO and founder of AppVee and AndroidApps, which were acquired by mobile application directory Appolicious. About this time last year, he gave us his picks of the best iPhone apps of 2009 up until then, so we thought we’d make it an annual tradition. I’ve been involved in the iPhone app industry since it first began in 2008 and I have to say that it has come a long way. I’ve seen it grow from a meager launch of 500 applications in the App Store to currently over 225,000. In only two years, the industry has matured at hyperspeed. It spawned an entire ecosystem to support it from a multitude of news and editorial resources to developer engines, promotional services and ancillary niches. With over five billion app downloads and a billion dollars at stake, it’s no surprise that Read More

iPad App Roundup: 6 Television & Movie Apps
Calendar16 Tue, 03 Aug 2010 14:55:12 UTC +00:00
If you’re a movie and/or television buff, then the iPad may be your new best friend. We’ve got a round up of six different apps to help you consume your favorite televisions shows and movies. Enjoy! Netflix has made a name for itself with its excellent service, and many were surprised when it announced it would be coming to the iPad before the iPhone (on launch day, too). The Netflix app is basically a one-window browser that loads a tailored version of the site, allowing you to watch any movie in its instant-watch collection. You can also manage your movie queue, adding or deleting movies as you please. The app isn’t very polished, but it works. I’ve watched the entire three seasons of Avatar: The Last Airbender on it without incident. The app is free; the subscription, however, isn’t, and it’ll run you $9 a month. There’s a free 30-day trial, Read More
Hulu Plus: Hands-On With the iPhone, HD and More [REVIEW]
Calendar16 Wed, 07 Jul 2010 02:47:02 UTC +00:00
Hulu Plus is a breakthrough service for people who want to completely abandon traditional television in favor of an Internet-based alternative, but there are a few things holding it back for some picky users. We spend the weekend watching items in Hulu Plus’s library on multiple devices, and our impressions are generally positive, although there are a few kinks to work out. Not every complaint about Hulu Plus is a kink, of course. Some people will say that they refuse to pay a monthly subscription fee for ad-supported content on principle. We’ll talk a bit about what reasonable expectations should be there, but needless to say, if you feel strongly enough about the principle, Hulu Plus isn’t for you and none of its features will change your mind. But if you’re open to Hulu Plus if the features are strong enough, we can help you figure out whether it’s worth signing Read More
App Store Updates: Hulu Plus, Instapaper, MobileMe Gallery
Calendar16 Wed, 30 Jun 2010 12:28:08 UTC +00:00
Posted 06/30/2010 at 4:28am | by J.R. Bookwalter Last week’s debut of iOS 4 and the iPhone 4 has brought with them an avalanche of App Store updates that make improvements for the latest and greatest, and on Tuesday a trio of them went live -- one new and two updates. New to the App Store is Hulu Plus, which the popular online streaming service calls “something different” than their traditional advertising-based website. Within hours of the news breaking Tuesday about the company’s new $9.99 per month offering, the universal Hulu Plus app went live on the App Store, compatible with the iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. Unfortunately, there’s not a whole lot you can do with the Hulu Plus app right now, aside from stream from a sampling of free content -- the service requires an invitation which you can request at the company’s website, and thus far it appears Read More
Hands-on look: Hulu Plus for iPhone, iPad
Calendar16 Tue, 29 Jun 2010 21:43:10 UTC +00:00
The iPad version of Hulu Plus looks and feels a lot like the Web version. And the video quality is superb. Today, Hulu officially announced Hulu Plus, a premium subscription service that gives you all-you-can-eat (er, watch) access to streaming TV shows and movies for $9.99 per month. For now, Hulu Plus is available by preview invitation only, but iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch owners can get a sweet, sweet taste of the service by downloading the new Hulu Plus app. Here's a sampling of what you can watch right now, for free--no invitation or subscription necessary: Remember, that's just the stuff in the Free Gallery. If you switch over to the Featured, Popular, TV, Movies, or Recently Added sections, you'll find pretty much everything Hulu has to offer. The apps are simple, straightforward, and elegant. You don't need a subscription--or even an invitation--to watch the shows in the Hulu Plus Read More
The TV-on-the-web service, Hulu, is now offering a free iPhone & iPad app for Hulu Plus, its recently launched subscription service. The service is currently in private beta, but you can sign up for the opportunity to try it out. Invites appear to be going out already, though who knows how many folks will get a chance early on in the private program. The subscription will run $9.99 per month, and give season pass type access to full seasons of television shows, as well as past seasons for some programming. All of the content will purportedly be presented in glorious HD. Though the service itself is in private beta, the iPhone/iPad app is available right now for download. There is a gallery of free sample content and a tour of the content offerings as a whole, but otherwise you must have a beta invite to log in and do more. It looks fairly similar Read More

Hulu Plus for the iPad, iPhone, and iPod Touch
Calendar16 Tue, 29 Jun 2010 19:04:26 UTC +00:00
posted by Trey Trawick on Tuesday, June 29, 2010 at 12:04 pm.   Hulu’s rumored premium HD service became a reality today with Hulu Plus, a $9.99 per month subscription. Hulu Plus allows you to watch every episode from the current season (and past seasons of select shows) from ABC, Fox, and NBC. Normal Hulu users are limited to the most recent episodes. Hulu Plus works on the iPhone 4, 3GS, and iPod Touch 3G running 4.0. The iPad version works over WiFi or 3g. Hulu Plus is invitation only at the moment, and you can request an Preview Invite here. When the service will go public is unknown, but for those who have managed to get an invite, the App is available through iTunes. Sadly, the service is still ad-supported despite the monthly cost. By Ben Harvell on June 29th, 2010 “What if your favorite TV shows loved you back?” The Hulu Blog today confirmed what many have been murmuring about online for some time. Hulu is bringing its streaming TV service to the iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. The aforementioned murmurs also questioned how this delivery of most of America’s top TV shows would be paid for, they too were given an answer with the introduction of the Hulu Plus subscription. Formerly only available via a PC or Mac, the Hulu Plus app and subscription service will combine to deliver episodes from current and classic TV shows on iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4 as well as the iPad and third gen iPod touch. At present the service is working on an invite-only basis (apply for one here) and will cost users $9.99 per month but, for this fee you do get a good deal Read More
Hulu today introduced its Hulu Plus premium subscription plan for television content, set to offer customers willing to pay $9.99 per month the ability to access an extensive array of both current television shows and older library content. Hulu Plus, offering content in 720p HD, is also set to move beyond the company's existing computer-centric platform to include Apple's full line of iOS devices, iPad, iPhone and iPod touch, with streaming available over Wi-Fi and 3G. Samsung Internet-connected TVs and Blu-ray players will also be supported at launch, with additional support for Vizio and Sony devices, as well as the PS3 and Xbox 360 gaming platforms, rolling out in the future. Hulu Plus is not a replacement for Hulu.com. Hulu Plus is a new, revolutionary ad-supported subscription product that is incremental and complementary to the existing Hulu service. For almost all of the current broadcast shows on our service, Hulu Plus Read More
