Calendar16 Tue, 06 Apr 2010 15:08:12 UTC +00:00
While you may well be excited about the Apple iPad and its iBookstore, iPhone and iPod touch owners choosing not to upgrade to the newest 9.7-inch device can still get e-reading on their iProduct right away thanks to a shelf-full of great e-book reading apps available now in the App Store. Though it’s unlikely you’ll want to consume War and Peace on your iPhone, having a few e-books on board for a quick read on the train or your lunch break is a great way to pass some time. And who knows, depending on the title, you might learn something new too. Here we’ve pulled together a list of five free apps that offer you e-book reading abilities on your iPhone. Love the project and idea, but more space needed for content, and maybe different content

Full disclosure, I used to work at the HCIL lab that helped create this project. I like them! But I also have a 3 year old so I'm also a critical user of this app. I really like the idea, specifically use the iPhone to "read stories" as opposed to play games. This implementation is fairly good, but suffers because the iPhone is so much smaller then the books that it's trying to represent. For a little help the app needs to give the content more space by:
Has potential

The books need to be age specific or something. I like all the books, but children includes my 2 & 4 year old, who get antsy with too many words, and they turn the page too soon on the books other than Waldo.
Great idea needs work

Text navigation needs work it feels choppy. The scans of pages need to be higher resolution. It's a small screen the pages should pop and text be intuitive to navigate. Kudos for including bilingual books as well as the old school three little pigs. More books! Great start, hope to see this one improve.
Needs help

I was excited for this app and really wanted it to work. My 2 year old loves to read, and I thought this would be great. Not so. The ease of use is not there. My suggestion, go buy a book. For you and your childs sake.
No sound

Doent have sound a little music would be ok
one out of four

Of the four stories included in this app, only waldo at the zoo works. The images and text are bold enough to read at a glance. On the remaining three storiez, The "tap to enlarge text" box is ridiculous and the images are of such poor resolution that they are basically useless.
Great Program!

I didn't know it was in two language, though.
Good start!

Would love to see more books available. Pictures and text show up just fine.

Ok

It's not bad but just ok
Worthy project but waiting for facelift

I really got excited about the app and about having children stories on the go, but in practice, the app is not as good as it has the potential to become. Mere (poor) scans of the originals are too analog for the iPhone . Here are a few suggestions, for which I'd even be willing to have the app not be free anymore, that apply to all books except "Waldo at the Zoo", which I think works well: - more books - better image resolution - more intuitive text. (The pop up text, though not necessarily a bad idea in itself, is quite a turn off in children books.) - more language choices, manageable in the app settings, and/or through a language menu accessible from the books themselves, maybe through a small flag icon or something similar - possibility to zoom in on picture details and text - possibilty to bookmark favorite books - narration in multiple languages
Great start

If you need a half hour quiet time with a 3-6 yr old, download this with the 4 stories. It's good old fashion fun and the one book that bounces from English to Aramaic is great!
