Locavore - What is a Locavore?

A locavore is someone who strives to eat food grown and produced locally. Oftentimes locavores choose to eat food grown or produced within a certain radius (50, 100, 150 miles). The New Oxford American Dictionary chose locavore, a person who seeks out locally produced food, as its word of the year 2007. Locavores are an integral part of the local food mov... Read More

10 iPhone Apps to Save the Planet
Calendar16 Thu, 15 Oct 2009 17:12:09 UTC +00:00
I don’t know if you guys are aware of it but today is Blog Action Day, an annual event that unites the world’s bloggers in posting about the same issue on the same day. The goal is to raise awareness and trigger a global discussion about important issues. This year’s topic is climate change so we selected a few applications that will help you lower your environmental impact on our planet. iLocavore (download for free) will be your mobile tool for finding locally grown foods and locally made products at home and on the road. Never get stuck shopping at the big box stores or the giant chain restaurants again. You will always be able to find the independent retailer, the farmers’ market, the restaurant that supports local farms. Really experience the local scene when you travel, and easily support your local economy, local farmers, artisan producers, and independent retailers while Read More

Fantastic First Application by Locallectual
Lots of Loca 4.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
The creators of this application are very clear in that they're starting it off simply— just blogs and other important "Locavore" news for now. As someone who values these updates as much as the company and product reviews that Locallectual also offers, this is great. Keep up the good work. Looking forward to the expansion.
Read the Description So NOT to Be Disappointed
JEMORME 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
"Pointless"!? It's called read the description. The application is a work in progress, and will get better with updates. Right now its a blog feed, and later it will able to do all sorts of fun things according to the description. I cant wait for updates!
Great information for locavores
localchick 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
This application does only pull up blog entries at this time, which is clearly stated in the description. The info is relevant for folks interested in the eat local movement, and I am looking forward to the things this app will be able to do when the updates are live. I believe it will be good because it pulls from a great site.
Love

I love this app! Very useful!
Pointless
jvadnais 1.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
No search. No location awareness. Nothing practical for someone wanting to live as a locavore in their area. Just a headline feed of the blog that links to Safari.
Great information for locavores and folks who like to buy local
localchick 5.0 stars Version: 1.1.0
wow the update is great you can find out what is made where, where to buy it, and where to find local food near you. helps me shop local, eat local, buy american-made!
Great Update!
idao 5.0 stars Version: 1.1.0
Excellent update.
Very limited
Ohhhdear 1.0 stars Version: 1.1.0
Crashed everytime I opened up a search for Food. Did a shutdown of my iPhone, still happens. No way to find MY locality; no search or use of the GPS, so even if I'm in Florida or Michigan I see Virginia or California. Even for free it's not worth the bandwidth.
Yes, Virginia. There is still stuff made in your hometown and iLocavore will show it to you.
JEMORME 5.0 stars Version: 1.1.0
What a great idea for an application! It's so refreshing to see that there is actually stuff still made in my neighborhood (and across this country!). It will definitely help me shop smarter! And how great to be able to buy these goods right from your phone with one click?
Excellent App Idea!
Gearupp 5.0 stars Version: 1.1.0
Keep up the good work!
Not Local
Locavore 1 1.0 stars Version: 1.1.0
Could not get this app to locate anything in my local area, and I know that there are quite a few. It seemed to be mostly internet advertisements.
Great potential
Karen the Librarian 2.0 stars Version: 1.1.0
The idea behind this app (and the website) is great- putting people in touch with local producers/retailers/eateries. However, without being able to limit the search criteria to the nearby area, or even the state, or heck, at very least listing the results in state order, this product will not be particularly useful.
this locavore app gets better all the time - great update for those who love to buy local!
localchick 5.0 stars Version: 1.2.0
I love this new update, now you can see how far away from where you are standing products are made, foods are grown, and see how far away retailers are that sell domestic products and restaurants serving local food! awesome!
a decent start, but needs some work
Little Pilgrim 2.0 stars Version: 1.2.0
I admire the effort. Lord knows we need more of these types of programs, but it needs to make some more user friendly adjustments. First off, I live in NY city...so it is rather useless to get listings from Washington State. iLocavore should allow you to narrow searches by distance. I do suppose it is a helpful tool to find online shopping opportunities, but can't one just do that on the internet? It is also lacking in many listings. New York City has scores of farmers markets, but iLocavore only lists 6 of them, and the largest of the NYC farmers markets isn't even listed among the 6. iLocavore could really benefit by allowing users to submit locations, give feedback about locations (to weed out the wannabees), etc.

This app is really great and such a useful tool while traveling. Thank you Locallectual!
What the?
pleomorphic 1.0 stars Version: 1.2.0
I got this app hoping to see lots of local goods, farmer's markets and CSAs so I can "shop local, buy local" like the blurb for the app says. No such luck. I know that there are farmer's markets in our area (Puget Sound) and there has got to be many locally owned shops and businesses but what I got was a comprehensive (looking) listing of events, shops, markets and information for communities thousands of miles away. What good is a farm in New Jersey to me if I want to buy local? Yes, it did list some businesses but as many as it should have. Users would be much better served with an optional function to expand searches outside their geographical area if they wish rather than the whole list of places that are the polar opposite of local. Great concept, very poorly executed.
