Add another developer to the Valentine's Day sale bandwagon, as Namco is now offering a huge selection of their iOS games at discounted rates. I honestly don't remember Valentine's Day being such a big deal before, but with EA, Capcom, Sega, and countless smaller developers using the holiday as an excuse to release special Valentine's themes or have sales, it looks like we can expect this sort of thing going forward. Have a look at what Namco is offering on discount, separated by price for your perusing pleasure (asterisks denote in-app purchase prices): $4.99 $3.99 $2.99 $1.99 99¢ Whew! That's a big list. In other Namco-related news, the Valentine's Day skin for Pac-Man has gone live as a free update for that game, and his lady friend has appeared on the iPad as Ms. Pac-Man for iPad [$4.99], as we told you about earlier this week. Happy Thanksgiving – Here Are a TON of Games on Sale
Calendar16 Thu, 25 Nov 2010 11:04:08 UTC +00:00
Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays, and has been all my life. What's there not to love about an entire day revolving around eating massive amounts of turkey, stuffing, and all the other fixings? Sure, I could do without needing to feign interest in football, but thankfully tryptophan overload usually allows me to sleep through all of that. If you're looking for something to do this year while you do your best to either pretend to be interested in football or anxiously wait for the food to be done, there are a ton of sales on the App Store to consider. The basis of this post comes from SirAwesome's awesome thread in our new price drops, freebies, and deals forum. He put together an extremely exhaustive listing of everything that's on sale, and the thread is good to stop by just to make sure you're not missing anything that might Read More

If you’re a fan of receiving free candy or for cleaning off an absurd amount of toilet paper off your front lawn, then you’ll know that Halloween is nearly upon us. Most people celebrate Halloween by paying money to go to places for the sole purpose of possibly getting frightened, walking with their children to complete strangers homes in order to get a treat, or keeping all of their lights off in order to avoid wave after wave of trick-or-treaters. If the last example sounds like your kind of Halloween, then why not take advantage of the big Halloween sales a number of iOS game publishers are offering for this weekend only? Playing on your iDevice of choice would certainly keep strangers from knowing you’re home, so give it a try! I can still remember the release of I Love Katamari [$4.99/Lite], the iPhone iteration of the popular Katamari Damacy console series. In an App Store that was still in its infancy, quirky indie titles made up the bulk of releases, with Sega's Super Monkey Ball and Activision's Crash Bandicoot Nitro Kart being among the only recognizable brand names on a platform struggling to assert itself as a mobile gaming contender. Nowadays, big name IP's are common in the App Store, and iOS gaming is hotter than ever. In December of 2008 however, the appearance of I Love Katamari was an exciting and surprising move by Namco that hinted at great things to come for the platform. Unfortunately, the game was initially plagued with performance issues that rendered it nearly unplayable on the Apple devices of the time. It was a shame too, since the ball rolling nature of I Love Katamari Read More
Killer Strategies For Six of Our Favorite iOS Games
Calendar16 Wed, 13 Oct 2010 22:27:54 UTC +00:00
Posted 10/13/2010 at 2:27pm | by The Mac|Life Staff We love our iOS games. In fact, we've played some of them so much we were able to come up with some helpful hints for six of our favorite games. » If you’re not playing a Druid character and would like to get some cheap healing, learn the Regeneration spell from the Troll. This will help save Blue Mana and won’t end your turn unless your enemy uses a Resists Magic spell. » Get a Giant Rat mount if you can. The Rat is easy to beat in the training game, and, once leveled high enough, will allow you to avoid road monsters while adding a valuable Cunning bonus in combats. » Practice! Beating even one stage unlocks Eternal mode, which lets you play without a time limit and improve your skills. Use this to your advantage, especially if you’re getting used Read More

On the heels of Glu Mobile’s Independence Day promotion, we have another publisher joining the party – Namco, which just recently celebrated Pac-Man’s 30th birthday. However, unlike Glu, Namco hasn’t made most of its titles available for 99 cents — it decided to slash prices just a bit, yet enough to make the games more attractive to consumers. Here’s what they got: iPhone: Android (all games are $2.99): If you find something of interest – act now! The sale ends today — unfortunately, we’ve missed Namco’s original announcement. In celebration of this holiday weekend, several game companies are hoping that you'll load up on some new games while loading up on burgers and hot dogs. Four of the biggest iPhone developers have discounted a selection of their games for this event, and a few other random sales are occurring as well. There's bound to be something on this massive list that piques your interest, so in between lighting off tiny explosives in the name of freedom and stuffing your face with barbecued treats make sure you hit up these sales before they're gone. Holidays on the App Store mean big savings for customers. Developers including Glu, Gameloft, and Namco are putting oodles of apps on sale, with many as low as $0.99. Grab 'em while you can! We Americans celebrate July 4th as Independence Day. Usually it involves fireworks, glow-sticks, barbecues, and patriotic parades. But quite a few developers have decided to celebrate in yet another way—by putting their apps on sale. Yay, cheap apps! Yay, developers selling lots of apps! Yay, fireworks! So far we’ve got sales from EA Games, Glu, Gameloft, and Namco, as well as a few bonus apps. Hit the break for a full listing of on-sale apps and games. Namco Namco is the developer behind lots of games, not just the Pac-man titles, and they’d like us all to remember that with this crazy sale. 'Noby Noby Boy' – We're Not Sure What to Make of This
Calendar16 Thu, 18 Feb 2010 07:00:00 UTC +00:00
Keita Takahashi, game developer and apparent future playground designer, is best known for Katamari Damacy and its sequel We Love Katamari. Both games are extremely creative and have spawned an incredibly devoted fan following, there's even an iPhone game-- I love Katamari [$4.99 / Free]. Takahashi kicked things up a notch with his next game, Noby Noby Boy which was first revealed at a Sony event in 2007, and didn't make it to the PS3 PlayStationNetwork store until 2009. In the PS3 game, you take control of a multicolored worm character that the game refers to as "BOY". With the analog sticks you can move BOY around the 3D environment filled with various buildings and animals. You can also stretch BOY, and points are accumulated by making BOY grow as long as possible. As players stretch their respective BOYs, points are collected by an online character called GIRL which causes GIRL Read More
Namco Says Happy Hearts Day With HUGE Games Sales!
Calendar16 Sun, 14 Feb 2010 08:30:39 UTC +00:00
February 14th, 2010 James Isabel If there’s a holiday/special event going on, expect Namco to be one of the few to put their games on sale. Until tonight I believe, you can download many of their games roster on the following sale prices: The first Ace Combat game was released in 1995 and the various versions have been put on different Playstation consoles, the Xbox 360, Game Boy and PSP. The franchise’s next outing is the iPhone (not surprisingly), and boy does this game deliver! We’ve seen Namco release numerous games for the iPhone however most games are met with criticism good and bad. Something tells me this game is one of their games that are simply runaway hits from the get go. Yet even more Namco games on sale: We’ll feature more games on sale throughout the day so make sure to keep on checking! You can leave a response, Read More

Starball In Review – Simply Addictive
Calendar16 Wed, 20 Jan 2010 14:38:21 UTC +00:00
Starball is one of the most simple pick-up-and-play games I’ve ever played. Your objective is to collect stars, and avoid red balls while keeping your own ball rolling. Think: Katamari meets Labyrinth. You can also pick up little question mark circles to activate a random powerup. What is Starball? Starball is an addictively simple pick-up-and-play style game which is fun for all ages and skill levels. Take advantage of our unique and amazingly responsive tilt controls to guide your ball around the play area collecting as many stars as possible. – Collect as many Stars as you can! – A Hazard is spawned each time a Star is picked up. – A random Power-up has a chance to spawn each time a Star is picked up. – Touch a Hazard and its game over!! The accelerometer controls feel very refined, keeping you in control, which is nice. You don’t often find Read More

We broke the news a few weeks back that Namco Networks had created a dedicated Apple Games group, separate from the rest of its mobile division, to allow a particularly strong focus on the iPhone as a games platform.  We recently had the chance to interview Jonathan Kromrey, head of the new Apple Games group, regarding the formation of the division and what it means to iPhone gaming. Kromrey, who spent time as a producer at I-Play Mobile Gaming, has most recently been part of Apple's own, internal iPhone apps division and was involved with the phenomenally successful Apple iPhone game release of Texas Hold'em [App Store].  He came to Namco Networks, bringing with him a team of developers from both Apple and EA, with the goal of "bringing freshness and newness to iPhone gaming."  He indicates that his group has plans to not only bring a number of popular Japanese Read More
Bovinedragon Software is the little-known creator of Trace, the popular draw your own path platformer for the iPhone and iPod touch that was released way back in October 2008.  The developer hasn’t released a new title since that time because they have been working on Gomi, a brand new adventure game with loads of content that took a little longer to release than expected. Gomi is kind of a mash-up of a variety of games, including Rolando, Katamari, and maybe a little Super Mario Galaxy.  In Gomi, the world has been overrun by civilization and you must clean it up by rolling your Gomi over anything and everything in its path.  The game is a 2D platformer that has you traveling through eight unique worlds with over 140 stages.  According to the developer, the game contains over 12 hours of gameplay, eight mini games, hundreds of achievements, online leader boards, hundreds Read More

A console classic could be the best game on the app store, if Namco fixes a few serious flaws.

I can't believe this! I read 40 to 50 sites per day including many about gaming in general and a few about iPhone gaming specifically. I never even knew this was in development! Imagine my surprise when I fired up the feed reader this morning to find that Katamari Damacy had been released for my new mobile gaming platform of choice! Suffice it to say, I couldn't get out my credit card fast enough.

I was hesitant to purchasing the game, but I took the risk and bought it. I love it. Not perfect, but it's a start.
Lots of fun, but hobbled by hardware
pridkett 4.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
Let's be honest, it would be very hard to bring the true Katamari experience to the iPhone, the hardware just isn't there. The game plays a little slow and the frame rate sinks into low single digits when transitioning between sizes and when your katamari picks up something that continues to move like a cat, dog, or person. However, it still is Katamari, on my iPhone, in my pocket. It still has the same quirky humor -- the King of All Cosmos is still jerk, and he still makes royal rainbows. You're still rolling up everything in sight. That makes this a pretty good experience on the iPhone, and certainly was worth the price compared to many of the other games. If you're used to the PS2 or 360 versions of the game, using the tilt sensor takes some getting used to, but it quickly becomes second nature and one of the better games on the iPhone. The fact they could get it this far on the iPhone is impressive. I'm holding out the last star in hopes that they can fix the framerate in a future version.
Unplayable

I've played through every Katamari game, so I'm definitely not a noob. However, I couldn't even get past the first level beause the gameplay broke down to the point where I could barely move in one direction or have the controls respond in a predictable manner.
Unplayable on iPhone 3g
Phokal 1.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
Rebooted between tests- Frame rates dip after 2nd half of the first level. This destroys the control; it stops detecting even constant forward movement. It makes it difficult to move even in a straight line; or turn. I'm a big fan of Katamari, and took a gamble with the mixed framerate and control reviews. Sadly, I definitely have run into these problems.
slow katamari. stay away.

The king of all cosmos is crying 1.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
Katamari Damacy is without a doubt my favorite game released this decade, due in very large part to the unique design and highly pick up and play nature. I love the game so much that when I started learning iPhone programming, a simple Katamari clone was my very first project. Needless to say, when it was released a few days ago, I was absolutely thrilled! However, unbridled joy turned to sadness when I discovered how poorly the game was ported. This version of Katamari feels like it is a direct, unmodified port of one of the PS2 versions' engines. It is obvious that the game needs more optimization to perform adequately, and by that I don't mean 'faster code'. My advice to the update team (assuming there will be one) would be to focus on object culling. The game drops to unplayable framerates as the ball gets bigger, so why does it try to display so many attached objects? I would suggest culling objects older than 32 pickups old - keep them in the collection list, but don't draw them or do any physics ok them. Beyond that, yes, part of the joy of the Playststion versions is the sheer quantity of things to pick up, but I would be fine with smaller levels with fewer things to pick up, if it meant the game was actually playable. Finally, the loading transition is ungodly. I'm sure the majority of the framerate drop is due to I/O and not the animation itself, but a loading animation should hide delays, not exacerbate them! Switch to something less choppy that hides the loading better - even a now loading screen would be preferable! Look at the scenes where the king talks during loading in WLK for inspiration. Despite my complaints, this ISa good start, but it needs another month in the oven, and I would be ashamed to release a game with this level of unplayability, especially to an audience that expects so much better. I will be awaiting an update that scales the game better to meet the hardware's capabilities. Also 10 bucks says this was rushed for Christmas, SHAME on the executive producer.
Great!

I love this game! This is in the top tier of the iPhone apps. The controls are a little strange at first, but plays great! It's so funny too! If you are tired of cheap "moble" games, get this!
Good, needs update

Great game, but the framerate is awful.
Great Game..Some suggestions
capnjiggins 4.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
Game is quite amazing and a great port. With that said, my only issues are the bland graphics (texture) and lack of levels. Compared to other Katamari games, the palate seems quite boring. I need more color!! That is where a lot of the character of this game comes from! And there are only 5 levels!? I beat the story mode in about an hour. I understand that there are some additional modes thrown in, but an extra couple levels (even on another planet) would be MUCH appreciated!
Namco has disappointed a long time fan

I've been a huge fan of the Katamari series up to this point. This game just seems 1/2 finished. It is infuriating to play. The framerate gets amazingly slow, especially when scaling up to a larger Katamari. The controls become sluggish after the first 30 seconds of playing, and like some other reviewers have mentioned, by the end of a level, they seem to invert themselves or stop responding all together. After 2 or 3 minutes, I find that I'm almost pointing the iPhone away from me trying to get the The Prince to move and turn. This puts a huge strain on my neck, trying to see the screen. I feel like Namco owes me a massage in addition to the patch that this game so badly needs.
Excellent port easily fixed via patches...
Dari 4.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
This is a darn-near perfect port of Katamari. The game itself is all there. Save for calibration issues, the controls are easy to play with and make for an acceptable way to play the game. The framerate issues can easily be fixed with updates.
Good, but has problems
Big CLC 4.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
Classic Katamari gameplay, but it definitely needs a patch for the framerate and controls.
Woo hoo, Katamari! A fix or two and we're good to go.
Mr. DM 3.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
I've been waiting for this for some time, however, there are a few performance issues that need to get fixed before this becomes totally playable. It lags a lot, and sometimes the accelerometer gets miscalibrated somehow and you have to tilt it nearly facing away from you to move forward. It also gets really slow when you "level up". But the music and fun is there, so with a few fixes it's on it's way.
Amazing.

They've done it again with i Love Katamari. It gives you the same unique sense of joy that all Katamari games seem to bring. A great first release, and while their are some issues with frame rate, and the general performance, it is nothing another update for the game couldn't fix. Press yes if you agree!!
Fun but short
Sho-n 4.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
I picked this game up post-update, so the issues such as framerate were resolved (it seems), though I can't comment personally on what it was like before. But now, it seems pretty good. Yes the katamari slows when it gets bigger, but it only lasts a few seconds, then it's back to smooth. It also goes a little choppy when you've been hit by a car, or cat, or whatever crazy thing they decided to throw in the game, and becomes kind of annoying, but those are my only complaints in regards to the implementation of the game on the iPhone/Touch.
Way too slow!
SonofaMort 2.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
The game looks great, but the slow speed makes it practically unplayable. Not worth $8 unless the performance is improved.
Was interested......

.... But I hate to sound like a broken record because the other reviews are saying the same thing but the gameplay is no fun with the speed and responiveness of the controls. I will rate 4 stars once I can move at a reasonable speed
Ok but It Needs Some Work
_Francisco 2.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
After reading that the frame rate was slow, I decided to still buy it because I hope an update will fix it soon.
After playing more

The game only starts to freeze when your katamari grows bigger and they have to adjust the camera so it might be loading. Not a big deal
Katamari!
Katelyn S 4.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
It's Katamari, complete with the King of All Cosmos and the music and everything. There aren't cousins flying around that I've seen, but that's the largest deviation from the console games thus far (besides the controls).
Good gameplay, broken controls.
jwmcglynn 4.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
Overall, the gameplay is fun, and the game is a good port. However, the controls are annoying. It seems like the tilt required to move forward increases as the level progresses. Additionally, movement feels slow. Even with its flaws, this game is worth buying.
I LOVE Katamari
iPanda92 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
Katamari is one of my favorite games. It is so fun to roll up everything and make your ball grow bigger and bigger. The controls are very easy! If you like Money Ball, then you MUST buy this game. The graphics are really good and the game play is fun. This is one of the best games on iPhone.
Broken
Ned Corona 2.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
Im a HUGE fan of Katamari but this release is broken. It has POOR controls that has you tilting the screen to the point where you cant even see what your doing. The controls also seem to stop working alot, and the game becomes unresponsive. The slowdown is UNACCEPTABLE. It gets so bad that the game becomes unplayable. Fix the controls and the slowdown and you have a great game here. The music is perfect, the graphics are acceptable for a mobile device. I love the series, but Namco should be sued for taking money from people for something this broken.
Simply the best.
CaseyLAY 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.2
Words cannot describe awesome this game is. Out of all the game apps I bought before (Bugdom2, Ferrari GT, BIA, LightBike, Rolando, etc.) I have to say that this is one of the greatest games on the iTouch. The graphics are solid, and the gameplay is the most intruiging and addictive thing I've ever seen. Five large and colorful levels (Although they tend to get smaller as you play), four fun and diverse game modes (And I must also add that each game mode rearranges objects to make things different), Rich and catchy music, oh and of coarse, THE KING OF ALL COSMOS.
Works great!
GregHarbin 4.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
I don't know what people are complaining about...the controls work well for me. I'd like to see an update to improve the framerate during size changes, but it's not too hard to just wait a moment, and the frame rate is great the rest of the time. The game is just as fun as all the 塊魂 games I've played in the past. Worth the $8!
Not worth the $$
Kamba juice wopoㅎㅎㅎㅎㅎ 1.0 stars Version: 1.0.3
At first the game was fun but it only offers five levels which can be beat in a day. If it's this much money they should of had much more levels. Also the controls are a bit frustrating at times.
