I’ve always thought of IM+ as a competent messenger application, but my impression was that it lacked the level of polish that separates good apps from great ones. In particular, IM+ used to feel like a port of the Windows Mobile version of the app, which simply wasn’t designed for iOS. However, we’ve seen quite a few updates to IM+ over the past few months, and version 4.5 feels much more like an iOS app than previous versions. It’s obvious that developers are starting to realize that we want push notifications for our Twitter apps. iTweetReply features the ability to view your entire Twitter timeline along with the ability to send you push notifications for mentions and direct messages. It also allows you to upload images via Twitpic, but that’s basically it. According to early user reviews, the push notifications work just as promised, but iTweetReply probably won’t replace your current Twitter app of choice. The update is an extremely trivial one, that is if you were looking for some new features, since the update’s description simply reads “This is a bugfix only update.” Since the update hasn’t propagated to all servers yet, you may be able to score yourself IM+ for only $4.99. I use AIM, Facebook, and Twitter, so these are the only networks that influence this review. The design of IM+ is nice and intuitive. The bottom toolbar has tabs for contacts, inbox, favorites, status, and more. Under the contacts tab you will find find a list of your contacts organized by account, group name, or no group (selected in settings). If no group organization is chosen, then your contact list will by organized alphabetically based on availability. So, the top of your list will show available contacts, then idle or away contacts. A few days ago, we reviewed iTwitter, one of the earliest iPhone 3.0 Twitter apps to support push notifications, but one major let-down of iTwitter is that push notifications only work when both parties use the iTwitter client. Today, however, Boxcar arrived in the App Store (iTunes link), and this client actually polls your Twitter feed every 5 minutes and sends out push notifications whenever a new direct message or @reply arrives. Messages sent between Boxcar users will be pushed out immediately. It's important to note that Boxcar is not a fully-featured Twitter client.
