Database Clients for the iPad
Calendar16 Fri, 24 Jun 2011 01:00:00 UTC +00:00
Continuing our series of business apps for the iPad, today we look at database clients, including ones for managing FileMaker, MySQL, Oracle and PostGres databases. Since FileMaker is owned by Apple, FileMaker databases and the iPad seem to go hand in hand. FileMaker Go ($39.99) is the official FileMaker client, but there are a couple alternatives. FMTouch FMTouch ($9.99) and TouchMyData ($4.99) are cheaper alternatives, and some users actually prefer it the official app. Both can sync with a FileMaker Server and will let you update records. TouchMyData Flipper MySQL database client ($1.99) handles very simple database queries, but can't deal with joins or other slightly more complex queries. iMy and Flipper ($5.99 each ) are more capable of working with complex queries. impathic offers clients for many databases under its DataGlass product line. They cost $4.99 each, and feature the ability to create queries, connect via VPN and limited visualization Read More

iMy completes me...

This app is A-W-E-S-O-M-E! So far has worked flawlessly. Makes it easy to write queries and manages to take advantage of the iPhone interface to make it easy to write queries and retrieve data. If you need to access your mySQL data on the road, this app is the ticket. If you do not know about managing a mySQL DB then move along. I emailed the developer based on their PostgreSQL version and they have provided excellent communication on the progress of this app - which leads me to believe that they are a responsive bunch and provide good customer service. Only thing, so far, that I would like to see is naming the connections. I manage several mySQL machines and it would be convenient to name the connections to something that is more meaningful than an IP address. Great v1!
Best MySQL app for iPod Touch
philtate 4.0 stars Version: 1.3
Very good, but no return key when editing queries, no way to import long queries, and no way to identify them.
Excellent
Tobie77 5.0 stars Version: 1.3
Needs to store the saved queries by name, for easier recognition.
Great for dba's

This is a great solution for MySQL DBA's. You can now access your MySQL databases from anywhere. I never leave home without it.
Superb mysql client for the iPhone

What a great app for the iPhone. Access your mysql databases over wifi or 3G. The app has a clean and attractive interface that is highly functional and expedites the forming of complex queries. There are so many useful features, such as the ability to save and email queries. If you work with mysql, this is a must-have app.
Not bad, but lots of room for improvement

It does a great job of understanding the database tables and fields. However having it on a scroll wheel makes it REALLY painful when you have a large number of entries. It would be nicer if it would autocomplete the entries while typing. Or present an alphabetical list with an alphabet quick jump on the side. The only problem is that many of the databases we use, have the same prefix for tables and fields so that would not solve it completely for us.
