I’ve been a little neglectful in not talking about one of the premier marine navigation software packages for the Mac. MacENC is put together with simplicity and ease of use in mind. MacENC includes a DVD of all NOAA vector charts making it one of the best values in marine navigation for $139 USD. See more about MacENC.   Apps at AppStoreHQ This entry was posted on Tuesday, May 13th, 2008 at 1:47 pm and is filed under General Navigation Software News, Marine Navigation Software. Needs some work...
Omita 3.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
$50 should be the price you pay for a very mature and well thought out iPhone application. Over all its just the shell of what will hopefully become a powerful application. If you are expecting any of the power if MacENC you will be disappointed. I own a copy of MacENC and I was disappointed with iNavX.
A great Addition
tamacn 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
I have a Marine Electronics business and have seen and installed many GPS navigation systems.
It works
Dromquinna 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
Those who seem to indicate that this is not an important App simply don't understand the need for redundant systems for boats. Once you lose sight of land, all sorts of bad things can happen. Clearly, this isn't your first choice for a stand alone ChartPlotter, but it does let you have some flexibility with your primary systems. The fact that they pack so much capability in such a small program is amazing.
GPS NavX does it again
Salvino 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
I've been using their software for years and this is just another great way to know where you are and where you are going on the water. The guy who said "for what" is either not a mariner or doesn't care where he is on the water. Their supprt for Mac navigation has been top notch so I am more than willing to put out $50 for this great program.
The best
F1ngalbier 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
This marine GPS proram is the best I have tried. I have tried to the Garmin Colorado lowrance, Maptech and Earthmate. This is far simpler and has few flaws. It is truly download and use. Accurate, all NOAA charts available, and after navigating into Gray's Inn Creek, Chester River, no mean feat by GPS only, it gets my vote.
OS X Navigation now complete
protsol 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
For those who use MacENC this will complete your portfolio of navigation software especially if MacENC is not located at your helm. This is because iNavX can function as a repeater of MacENC, including active waypoint, GPS, and NMEA instruments. For those who don't but have a 3G iPhone then this could be the only nav software you need!

fshrlou 4.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
Great app. Used it all morning on the water and was suprisingly accurate. Seems expensive, but all charts are up to date.
Fantastic Program
Whirlwind II 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
I have been using GPSNavX on my sailboat for many years. It has worked perfectly and is very accurate and reliable. When I saw this version for my iPhone I didn't hesitate to buy it. This is an excellant program and I would recommed it to any boater using the iPhone.
Good Application and Great Support
EchoBravoAloha 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
I had a few questions and emailed customer support. They got back to me within 5 minutes each time with screen shots to help! - I appreciate that sort of commitment to the end user. I'm a daytime boater and this application has everything I need. I plan to use it on the water in the next week or two and will write another review. However, I am confident I will get good results. I read an ignorant review complaining about the price. Keep in mind this program has a lot of depth and clitch free in my experience so far. Combined with excellent customer service this is a good price. Don't write a negative review unless you really use this app - then by all means, say what's on your mind and let the developer respond. Everything can't be free.....
Best App on my iPhone
Word Maven 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
I'm telling all my boating friends that it's worth buying an iPhone just for this one app. No boater should be without it. The developer has been tops in responding to user concerns. Thanks, iNaxX.
Best PDA in the world for a sailor!
Bay sail 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
I cant explain how helpful this app is going to be. No more luging a laptop everytime I want to go for a quick sail. I have used this devlopers app for years. He is great developer and is always open to suggestions. Awesome app awesome price. Don't worry about new features. This developer works fast!
fantastic app, great support
Zoo6602 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
fantastic app. works very smooth and quick. the support and reply to emails is fantasticly quick. quite impressed with the programmer and the responses. worth every cent of the $50.
Good, but needs some tweaks--UPDATE: 1.0.2 fixed my concerns
ibsailn 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.2
First, Yes, I bought the program. I am a Naval Architect/Marine Engineer and a professional sailor. I have been waiting for the release of this program since I got my iPhone one release day. Program interface is very good with the exception that you can't zoom out enough to see an overall context of your location. Even fully zoomed out, you can still read all the text on the charts. UPDATE: 1.0.2 ADDED 5% ZOOM WHICH IS GREAT FOR GETTING AN OVERVIEW OF THE AREA AND SOLVES MY MAIN CONCERN WITH THE PROGRAM. The program uses the NOAA Raster charts which it displays beautifully. Download time on a good 3g connection (~100 kb/sec listed by program) is about 20 to 40 seconds depending on the chart with my longest download being 1:30 for buzzards bay which included about 9 individual charts. I would prefer being able to zoom out to see about 1/4 of the total "paper" chart (this is my only real compaint yet, but it is a significant one for usefullness of the program). I have not tried the NMEA over wifi yet, but intend to next weekend. It is my understanding that this will even show AIS targets, but I won't be able to test that untill I install AIS over the winter. Full reviews will follow on my blog in the coming days at vofj dot blogspot dot com if intersted in more detailed information UPDATE: FURTHER REVIEWS AND USE INCLUDING WIFI INSTRUMENTS AVAILABLE AT MY BLOG UNDER THE TAG INAVX.
Unintuitive. Unresponsive. Useless.
freediverx01 1.0 stars Version: 1.0.5
The interface is completely unintuitive. Zooming and scrolling through charts is excruciatingly slow, so much so that it renders the app virtually unusable. Limited ability to zoom out for big picture view. Without a dramatic redesign and performance improvement, this app is a huge waste of money. The fact that no other review has even hinted at these flaws strongly suggests they were posted by this app's developers. Not worth a dollar, let alone $50.
Not nearly worth the $$
Towbotr 1.0 stars Version: 1.0.5
As a professional mariner with over 25 years of commercial towing and piloting experience, I've tried nearly every marine navigation gizmo from the recreational gear for us yachties like Raymarine or Garmin to the major players in the game like Transas, Rosepoint & Nobletec. This product is a fraction of the cost but doesn't even make the purchase worthwhile. I wasn't expecting a lot and I wasn't disappointed. I didn't expect the headache that comes with INavX (at no extra charge).
Work like a charm
Ship O' Fools 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.2
I was about to buy a new handheld GPS as a backup to my chartplotter, when I saw mention of this app on Sailing Anarchy. Bought it immediately and have been using it almost nonstop. It is a very effective app, especially when combined with the new iPhone. The ability to download maps on the fly for regions you are in is incredible. Combine this with the AeroWeather application, and Tides, and I have my own portable nav/weather system. Best part about it is that I can bring it sailing on other peoples boats and do not have to worry about if they have a smart setup, since I have brought my own.
This Should be a beta app only
Bazzer69 1.0 stars Version: 1.0.2
This a great app for downloading charts, but it's definately not ready for the public yet. There is no way of building a route and saving it, fairly vital for planning, loading map segments are slow as is the general interface. I purchased in the hope of using it for sea kayaking, If there was a way of getting my money back I would.
Great GPS UI, very usable, very promising
CCDeep 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
Bought it, very happy, worth $50. It's easy to get charts and see what charts you are on, waypoints are easy to add, great to have full keyboard for waypoint names, the way it shows waypoints on charts is really nice.
Update?
Taco Breath 3.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
Good start, but needs work. I hope a update comes out soon.
Very nice but...
chrisferro 3.0 stars Version: 1.0.2
I wish you could get distance between 2 waypoints. And when I'm using it and I try to pan the map away from my positon to set a waypoint, the map instantly snaps back to my position, making it impossible to set a waypoint that is any real distance away. Then I figured out that if you turn off the "keep location icon visible" setting it won't happen. Now I love this app.
Amazing Capability on the iPhone
Scott-DH 5.0 stars Version: 1.1.2
Fantastic backup for navigating. While departing in the dark, I had better situational awareness using the iPhone than my friend had on his older chart plotter and radar combined. Having the third view of the world in my hand was fantastic. On my boat it completes the network of raymarine chartplotter, MacBook (MacENC), and a remote view (iPhone). All linked. The best part is the charts are current and free from NOAA. Authoritative charts with no chart corrections required. Finally, linking your current position to the tide program is very helpful in new locations where I don't already know the names of the tidal stations. Fantastic effort. I've used GPSNavX, MacENC, and now iNavX... updates have always added features that make sense and have been free.... Thank you!
worth $50
Dejac31 5.0 stars Version: 1.1.1
When you consider how much a stand alone portable gps will set you back $50 is fair. There are a few things I would like to see different. A graphical chart selection that could be overlayed on any chart and/or the ability to scale from chart to chart graphically would make chart selection more intuitive. I think that multi-touch zooming and the ability to zoom all the way out of a selected chart would be a tremendous improvement. Overall this is a good app and I would recommend it to any mariner with an iPhone. UPDATE: Chart scaling and multi-touch zooming added. Thank you. Looking forward to GRIB data overlay. Radar loop would be sick. You would have to surgically remove my iPhone from my hand. Again I'll say this app is worth the money. I use it all of time. Any time I want to refer to a noaa chart I just pull it out of my pocket. If I want to gunk hole with my dinghy I've got my charts. Best of all the data IS accurate. I've tried the other marine nav apps and they are NOT worth the money. Ignore the negative reviews, they obviously haven't a clew what they're looking at or how to use it. Thank you for producing such a useful app.
So Good!
leetom 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.2
I used iNavX for a trip from Seattle to Orcas Island last weekend, and it was invaluable! Of course, eyes and paper charts were our #1 and #2 tools, but iNavX was incredibly accurate and fun to use. I plotted 15 waypoints from Shilshole Bay to Westsound, and plugged them all in. The GPS-based compass proved more accurate than the one on our boat - now I know ours needs tuning. Worth every penny!
Too functional for words
Echo4163 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.2
This weekend's trip in my 23 foot cuddy to the Apostle Islands in western Lake Superior supplemented my aged handheld GPS and Richardson's with iNavX on my iPhone. I was dazzled by the software's performance and functionality. Recently on the verge of shelling out hundreds of dollars for a new handheld with the necessary proprietary charts, I now have iNavX, which for a mere 50 bucks allows me to download free charts and follow myself around a familiar NOAA raster environment with the ease of point and touch, regardless of time of day or visibility. Armed with a reliable power source, iNavX may be as technical as navigation needs to be for the weekend boater. In fact, given the software's instrumentation which includes electronic compass, as well as course and speed indicators, iNavX's greatest downside may be its temptation to leave shore with only one means of navigation. Even for hardened sailors who would never replace paper or dead reckoning, 50 dollars puts complete position confidence in the palm of your hand. Thank you for this fine software.
Great App!

Just what I was looking for. Works Great!
A great view

Marty Tighe 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.8
You get a chart plotter ($3,000) for ($50) that fits in your pocket, making your iPhone even more useful. Great as a backup or when you are on a boat without a chart plotter. For me it is a great value. Just for marketing, I would lower the price and sell 100x as many.
Dont waste 50 bucks like I did!
jimmy568 1.0 stars Version: 1.0.7
This app should cost no more than 10 bucks. I wish I could get my money back! Worthless app, does not live up to the description at all! SAVe YOUR MONeY! I would have left 0 star if that was an option!
It's alright
Buzzzz 3.0 stars Version: 1.0.3
Definitely should not be your primary navigation software. I think it should have cost about $19.99.
Fantastic
Thisworks 5.0 stars Version: 1.2.0
This app works excellent and is right on, I love the track feature like you get with a $900 system. I used it at night tonight and it guided me right in, even though I couldn't see markers until I was right on them. In fact there are areas that are very shallow and have zero markers, a 15 foot wide channel that drops to 1 foot deep on the outside. I was in probably one of the most difficult areas to navigate in my waterways, the only thing that tripped me up was not following my outgoing track in one area, duh snap. This app saved my skin tonight. I paid for it in the lack of prop damage. Thank you, thank you, thank you. Great support too.
gold east lover
doctor boy 4.0 stars Version: 2.0.2
I go to college and fish 4 days a week on a top 10 offshore charter boat in Miami. The navionics new 5 dollar application for all regions of the U.S. Absolutely blow this application out of the water. This application is annoying. I have to open up the various maps to find my location and if I'm in blue water the phone doesn't get reception so this app is almost useless at more than 5 miles off of shore along with the navionic app ;however, in shore fishing and boating is superb with navionics and iNavx also. Navionics till I die.
NOAA Raster Charts are free to use in iNavX
Transpac 5.0 stars Version: 2.0.3
iNavX is the only application that lets me use the official and frequently updated NOAA raster marine charts on iPhone. Contrary to a couple others comments about having to pay for charts, this just isn't the case. The NOAA charts are free and and very easy to use in iNavX. They look just like my paper charts. Thanks NOAA!
Great Product!
Hamilton Moore 4.0 stars Version: 2.0.1
This is the best 49.95 I ever spent. This is not a perfect product. It is not the best it could be. It is not as easy to use as it might be. And it might have more features. But, for the price, it is an unbelievably efficient, relatively easy to learn marine navigational tool completely adequate for the average daytime mariner and fully sufficient for an emergency backup in the most demanding of applications. Once you understand that, to get another chart, you have to center the chart you are looking at on the area you want then push the plus button in the upper left hand corner, you can download the charts you need and cache them on your device, making you independant of the phone network. You cannot set a route, but you can set a waypoint and get all the usual information about your position and track relative to the waypoint. Although no help comes with the device and the online help is nearly useless, you can email the producer and get an answer back in about 5 minutes. This is the best help system bar none I have ever delt with. The charts are NOAA, they are free and they are easily legible and zoomable. If you zoom enough, and there is a more detailed chart underlying the center of your chart, you will be prompted to download it. In my first use of it, my regular GPS failed and I was able, without having gotten help from the maker, to sufficient chart, set a waypoint, and use the instrument information to find my destination which was 60 miles away. I have been around a lot of $1000.00 Garmins which were much harder to use on a basic level. It is much easier to use than their handhelds as well though, without a route feature it is somewhat limited. It will keep tracks. Keep it up. Well worth the price. I have not used any other iphone based marine or topo gps programs, but this one works, and works well. If it had routes and a set of instructions I could refer to if my life depended on it, I would have given it 5 stars.
Love it.
Ruecube 5.0 stars Version: 2.0.3
Amazing app. Amazing support. If you use nautical charts buy this app.
Lost power
Drewphus 5.0 stars Version: 2.0.3
I was sailing around Frying Pan Shoals enroute to Beaufort, NC. I had just purchased this app as a backup to my Ray Marine plotter. Lost electrics 40 miles out, and diverted to Georgetown, SC. I pulled out my iPhone and loaded up iNavx, didn't have the Winyah Bay chart loaded. Once close to shore, downloaded the chart and it automatically came up with our ship clearly identified. This app led us safely into the dock in Georgetown. We would have been lost without it. What great app and the best money I have spent in a long, long time! Great job and many thanks!! Fantastic product!
Captain Petter 5.0 stars Version: 2.0.3
Works great using Franson GPS with my Raymarine E-series network. Displays AIS and even next waypoint from autopilot. Could be a little faster at zooming vector charts.
Astonishing to have:
Jknight611 4.0 stars Version: 2.0.3
Astonishing to have this much in the palm of your hand, and that is my major complaint. The iPhone screen is too small and processor too slow on my 3G. All in all well worth the price, a lot of useful info if you can see it!!
