Facebook launches Instagram-like "Camera" app
Calendar16 Thu, 24 May 2012 19:15:00 UTC +00:00
What do you do after spending a billion dollars buying a popular photography app? If you're Facebook, you then release your own branded app that does the exact same thing. Yes, Facebook has just launched the Facebook Camera app. The app allows you to take photos or select current photos from your iPhone's camera roll and upload them directly to your Facebook Timeline. Like Instagram, Facebook camera allows you to apply filters (though there are only 16 for now) before uploading your pics. Besides filter support, the app also allows you to crop and rotate your photos, batch upload them (something the current Facebook app can't do), and follow your friends' photo feeds. All in all, if you're an Instagram fan, you won't be too impressed with Facebook Camera because Instagram can do much more (such as hash tag, tilt-shift, etc). And fans of Instagram, worry not. The Instagram app is Read More

What the back of the Instagram icon looks like
Calendar16 Wed, 11 Apr 2012 18:40:32 UTC +00:00
Have you ever imagined what the back of any app icon might look like? San Francisco photographer , has done a very clever job creating a view of the icon from the other side. His instamatic film camera aesthetic adds so much fun to the icon — offering all of us a glimpse into the great unknown of the dollar iPhone app. I really like the idea that one commenter had — which could easily spin off into a crowd sourced designed coffee table book that explores the dark side of app icons. Imagine app icons as Pop Art. "You should totally make a series called "The Dark Side Of The Icon" and do the backside of a whole bunch of famous app icons." - Joaquim Marques Nielsen wrote. It's a very cool concept that could even spawn a slew of fine art gallery prints.     Read More

The Ups and Downs of iPhoto on iOS
Calendar16 Thu, 05 Apr 2012 21:11:21 UTC +00:00
I’ve been looking for a single app to be the photo editing kit on my iPhone and iPad, and – to my surprise – iPhoto might just be that app. There’s definitely quite a learning curve to iPhoto on iOS, but I really like how the app focuses more on slider controls than quick-fix presets. I don’t have anything against apps like Instagram and PhotoToaster (I think they’re great, actually), but there are just a few too many app candidates out there that are overly eager to head butt me right out of the photo editing process. I appreciate photo apps saving me time and adding pizazz to my pictures in a single tap, but there’s also something refreshing about iPhoto’s take on sliders controls (you can opt to use sliders or gesture right over the photo). The only app that I’ve seen come close to this approach is Snapseed, and Read More

Mashable notes this morning that the iPhone is no longer the most popular camera used by Flickr users. That honor now goes to the Canon 5D Mark II. Canon's numbers have been rising for months, and pics from that Canon model totaled 4,643 yesterday. The iPhone 4 users posted 4,460. The iPhone 4 was the number one image contributor when rankings were released last June. There's one thing to take into consideration. The iPhone numbers only reflect the use of the Apple provided camera app. If you're using Instagram or Hipstamatic or any of the 3rd party HDR apps your photos won't be tagged as iPhone images. Canon recently lowered the price of the 5D Mark II because its been replaced by the Mark III, so some of the boost comes from that. Also, numbers for the iPhone 4 are dropping as the iPhone 4S grows in popularity. Looking at the Read More

by Apple has launched a countdown to its 25 billionth app downloaded from the App Store, but more is at stake than the glory of a historic download. The company is giving away a $10,000 gift card to spend in the App Store. Think of all the Zynga games — without the frequent pop-up ads of the free editions — you could by with that kind of money! What’s strange about the giveaway is that you don’t need to download anything to enter the contest. You can fill out an online form to be entered to win. The winner must agree to publicity, such as sharing your name, photo and some of your App Store picks with the Apple community. Yes, that means others will know that you’re spending your hefty gift card on several versions of Angry Birds. What would you do with $10,000 from the App Store? Let us Read More
Everyone's favorite photo filtering and sharing app for iOS got a significant update on Friday afternoon. Version 2.1 of Instagram adds a new filter, a tool for easily enhancing low-lit photos and a redesigned navigation. Sierra, the latest filter to join the Instagram family, is a white-bordered filter that adds a lightened, low-contrast vintage look to photos. As far as Instagram filters go, it's pretty standard stuff, but it's always nice to have new options. The more substantial addition to the app is a feature called Lux, which lets users automatically increase the brightness of photos and boost the contrast. The option is meant to offer a way to improve underexposed photos and make them more Instagrammable. The visual overhaul of the navigation UI comes five months after the app's camera was redesigned in version 2.0. This iteration appears to complete a larger redesign process was undertaken last year. The new Read More
A new version of the popular photo taking/sharing app Instagram is in the AppStore, bringing few additional features to the mix. The first thing you’ll notice in Instagram 2.1 is slightly revamped UI, which comes with improved header and menu buttons that will make it “easier to understand and interact” with the app. Moreover, there are tappable notifications that bring you directly to the relevant photo, comment or user profile page. And that’s not all. With the new feature, Lux, you get a new way to transform the look and feel of your photos by making them more vibrant and bringing out details you couldn’t see before. Finally, there’s a new filter called Sierra. Instagram remains the free app and if you still don’t have it running on your iPhone, grab it now. After all, it’s one of the most popular iOS apps ever released… Instagram (FREE) [iTunes link] SPONSORED MESSAGE Read More

Instagram Update Adds Epic Fill Lighting Feature
Calendar16 Sat, 11 Feb 2012 21:56:44 UTC +00:00
There is already so much to love about the Instagram app for iPhone, but creators of the photo sharing phenom have just added a powerful new image enhancement with Lux. Instagram has delivered a real god send with this magic fill light and rapid photo correction option wrapped into one click. Lux is a standout feature that transforms underexposed images with a single tap by instantly balancing exposure, adding contrast, detail, and a color boost to photos with the greatest of ease. The effect is most useful for landscapes and cityscapes where shadows can prevail. Instagram version 2.1 also introduces a simplified user interface and new Sierra effect filter to the app. While some might initially struggle with the improved interface, I could appreciate the changes after spending only a few minutes tooling around on the new version. I'm confident that the community of over 15 million active users will Read More
Instagram 2.1 Released with Fresh UI and More
Calendar16 Sat, 11 Feb 2012 23:01:21 UTC +00:00
posted by Jacob Penderworth on Saturday, February 11, 2012 at 3:01 pm.   The popular photography app Instagram has received an update that refreshes its user interface, adds a new “Sierra” filter, improves push notifications, allows for profile picture changes in-app, and adds Lux to enhance your photos. The new user interface is definitely a big improvement from the previous one as it adds a lot of simplicity to the app and also has more of a modern feel to it… However, while the most major change in version 2.1 is the new user interface, the addition of Lux will also prove to be very helpful for those pictures that came out very under-exposed, either due to low light or bad lighting in areas. The developers don’t explain how Lux works, though it seems to be something like the iPhone’s HDR setting in the Camera app. If you’d like to see Read More
Instagram Upgrade Introduces a Powerful New Feature

by Take a look at your App Store icon, iPhone users, and if you’re an avid Instagram user, there’s a big surprise for you inside. Instagram just received a big upgrade, and it’s going to make your pictures on the social networking service look a lot better. The standout new feature is called Lux, and it can be a godsend for pics that look too dark in some areas. It can enhance photos that already look good, too. It acts like a magic fill light that you can shine on your picture, bringing up the brightness in the shadowy areas so you can see things you couldn’t see before. Lux is like HDR that you can apply after the picture’s been taken. This brings an entirely new dimension to Instagram, the explosively popular app that’s for iPhone only. The app has attracted a network of users consisting of 15 million photo Read More

Tonight, the Instagram app has been updated to version 2.1, which has added three new features… Instagram 2.1′s coolest new feature is Lux. Lux is a new way to enhance your photos, and can be done by simply clicking the image. The Next Web shows off the enhancements lux adds above. The app has also been updated with a new and simplified UI. The new UI is noticeably quicker, less cluttered, and also features a new notification system. Instagram’s new designer Tim Van Damme, who was hired in December, is responsible for most of the UI enhancements. Lastly, Instagram has added a new filter called Sierra — which has a 70s look to it. College Introduces Course On iPhoneography
Calendar16 Mon, 06 Feb 2012 14:30:09 UTC +00:00
iPhone photography, dubbed ‘iPhoneography‘, seems to be the new hip thing among iPhone users. It’s much easier to carry your iPhone around to take photos than an expensive DSLR, and with popular apps like Camera+, Instagram, and Camera Bag, you can take equally stunning shots. Interestingly, a UK college wants to teach its students this new method… BBC reports that London’s Kensington and Chelsea College is launching a new course to teach students about iPhoneography. The college thinks many iPhone users don’t know how to use their iPhone to take photographs properly. The course, led by Richard Gray, requires each student to have an iPhone. Mr. Gray will teach students about the basics of photography like color, light, and composition, but will also teach them to use iOS apps to make collages and more. Along with this upcoming class at Kensington and Chelsea College, Mr. Gray hosts a workshop at local London Read More

Favorite Four Apps for Photo Effects

Instagram CEO hints at video sharing

Instagram CEO Kevin Systrom spoke at TechCrunch Disrupt in Beijing last week, and hinted that video sharing would be coming soon to the popular mostly iOS-driven photo sharing service. "We really want to go after something bigger than filtered photos," he said, explaining that the service really wanted to let users share their entire lives, not just photos. That's likely music to many Instagram users' ears -- there are more than 9 million people using the app already, and it's been praised quite a bit for its ease-of-use and excellent interface. And while, yes, there are plenty of ways to share video from the iPhone and the iPad as well, lots of users already have Instagram built into their social flow, so having video available on the service will be that much easier. Unfortunately, Systrom said that while video is in the plans, it may be a while -- obviously including Read More

Over the weekend, Instagram was seeing a signup rate of over one new user a second — roughly 75 per minute, Systrom says. This pushed them past the 10 million user milestone. Remarkably, it took the hot startup Foursquare just over two years to Read More
Instagram Upgrades, Adds Filters and Increases Image Size
Calendar16 Wed, 21 Sep 2011 02:59:01 UTC +00:00
Fans of Instagram, the popular free iPhone photo-sharing app, has given users at least four new reasons to snap and share: It has added four new filters in an update. Moreover, it has upgraded the app so that it can take larger images. Instagram have also added improvements to its editing tools. Perhaps the most significant change is in the size of images. The new Instagram app can produce images roughly 10 times larger than before, meaning your snaps can be print worthy and ready for framing. Another change is that instead of taking a photo and then applying filters to see how it looks, you can turn on the filters before you shoot. You can then pan around an get an idea of what the final effect will be. Tilt shift – blurring a section of the photo – used to be a bit of a hidden feature, but it Read More
Instagram iPhone app hits 2.0 – Still no Android version
Calendar16 Tue, 20 Sep 2011 17:43:19 UTC +00:00
For the most part, I truly believe that the Android Market has caught up with the App Store in terms of overall look and feel and app selection but there still are a few exceptions of great apps which only iPhone users can get. Instagram is one of those apps and the program’s 2.0 version just landed and it’s packed full of new features. The Instagram 2.0 app looks very similar to previous versions when you boot it up but once you go to take a picture, you’ll notice a major change in the camera UI. You now have controls on top of the screen to control the flash, switch which camera you’re using and more. Those wonderful filters now pop up after you’ve taken the picture on the bottom and that UI has also been tweaked for a more user-friendly look and experience. It’s not just the UI though, as Read More
It was exactly one year ago today that I wrote up my initial lengthy preview of Instagram. I had a feeling that when it launched, it was going to be big. I underestimated it. Fast forward to today. Instagram is just about to hit 10 million users. They are the nimble upstart that has become the gold standard in the mobile social photo space . Everyone is gunning for them. And so it’s fitting that today, a year after my initial post, they’re unveiling version 2.0 of their app. First, it’s important to note what Instagram 2.0 is not: a completely new app. If the adage “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” applies to anyone, it applies to Instagram. At its core, what they’ve built is clearly working, so there’s no reason to change that. But the Instagram team realized there was a way to dramatically improve the service while retaining the elements users Read More
Loved by some, hated by others, the art of applying a special filter to a picture taken with your iPhone has exploded in popularity over the past year or so.  In fact, it has become so popular, there’s talk of a similar feature becoming standard in iOS 5.  In the meantime, those wanting to add filters to their pictures should take a look at any one of the following apps, all of which have a catalog of filters to give even the dreariest of snaps a new lease of life. A great cross-platform photo-sharing social network.  Take a photo from within the app, or select one from your Camera Roll, then add a filter of your choice.  There are nine to choose from, each with the option of adding a border, and the chance to share your uploaded pic through Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr and many others.  Free. Free App Friday: Social Photo Sharing
Calendar16 Fri, 19 Aug 2011 22:00:40 UTC +00:00
Posted 08/19/2011 at 2:00pm | by Florence Ion Summer time is almost to an end, and you've probably got a ton of photos to sift through and upload to the web. Our suggestion is that you start with the incriminating blackmail photos first to get that over with, and then work your way up to the all-smiles group pictures. To get those photos to the web from your phone, here are four free apps that work in conjunction with your favorite social networks. Because it's Free App Friday and no one should have to pay for an app on a day like today. You know it because your friends used it, but have you jumped on the Instagram train yet? The app lets you share your photos across a spectrum of social networks, and gives you the option to add a vintage hue to them or even tilt-shift your photo. Like Read More
Google wants to eat everyone’s cake. Android successfully got in on the smartphone action iOS was enjoying, and Google+ is nipping at Facebook’s heels. Photovine, the photo-sharing app built by Google’s Slide team, is now open to public use after an initial beta period, and is gunning for Instagram‘s crown. How does it stack up against the champ? I was sort of hoping that Photovine would allow me to just sign in using my Google credentials, but maybe because Slide operates like an independent startup within Google, that’s not the case. Signing up is fairly easy though. It consists of just one screen, where you enter your name and email address, choose a username, and password, and optionally supply your phone number if you want to speed along the friend-finding process. Instagram also features just one screen for sign-up. Enter your email, username, password and optionally a phone number to get Read More

Instagram users have uploaded over 150 million photos
Calendar16 Wed, 03 Aug 2011 20:00:00 UTC +00:00
Instagram's 4-person team has announced that the service's users have posted over 150 million photos. Consider that the free, social photo-sharing service now receives about 1.3 million photos per day -- that's 15 shots per second -- and you realize one thing: people really like sharing photos. Make that process easy and convenient, as Instagram has with its iPhone app, and you've got yourself a winner. Kevin Systrom, one of the company's founders, described the diversity he's seen from users: "There are Instagram photos from major events like the World Series and the Grammys, and some Instagram photos have even made the national news. Artists and celebrities have begun to give fans a unique look into their lives." The app is simple and fun. Once you've created a free account, just launch Instagram as you would Apple's own Camera app and start shooting. You can then apply one of several artistic Read More

5 tips for a more social iPhone on Social Media Day
Calendar16 Thu, 30 Jun 2011 15:28:49 UTC +00:00
Thursday is Social Media Day, so in honor of that, I’d like to offer a few tips about making your iPhone a more social device. It’d be easy to just say “register as a developer and install iOS 5,” since that brings Twitter integration, but here are some options that don’t cost $99 and involve using pre-release software on your primary device. This is actually a tip for your Mac, but it makes it much easier to share photos to Facebook and Flickr if you set up Events in iPhoto ’11 that you can dump content to in bulk. Using uploading apps on the iPhone itself usually works best if you’re only doing one photo at a time, and if you’re on vacation, that can get annoying very fast. Connecting your social accounts in iPhoto will make it much easier to create organized albums on Facebook and Flicker with only a Read More

10 Instagram Tips For Bands, By Bands

Now, thanks to the marvels of modern technology, it’s easier than ever to create a highly visual tour diary to sate the appetite of your friends and followers. One word, my musically inclined friends: Instagram. Instagram, that increasingly popular photo app that launched near the end of 2010, has become the darling of many a news outlet and brand, but has yet to really catch on among the musician set. Still, according to Josh Riedel, head of business development at Instagram, more and more bands are getting hip to the site. The most popular is undoubtedly The National (@ntnl). Riedel, for one, hopes to see more bands joining the platform. “We see bands on stage, but most people don’t get to Read More
Piictu puts the fun into iOS picture sharing
Calendar16 Tue, 07 Jun 2011 21:30:00 UTC +00:00
What? Another iOS photo sharing app? No, wait, keep reading! The just-released Piictu app (official site, iTunes) has some new tricks to show you. Piictu's big idea is to treat the photos you post not as the traditional timeline view we associate with blogs and apps like Instagram, but rather as a series of conversations, each on a certain theme. Suppose I post a picture of my dogs, Daisy and Jake. Any of my friends who see that -- or anyone on the service as a whole -- can then post a picture reply to that photo, perhaps of their own dogs, or some other pet. Someone else can post another reply, and so on. Piictu groups responses together to encourage an ongoing conversation. The power of this simple idea is perhaps best demonstrated by this photo thread pictured in the second half of this post, where an impromptu multiplayer game Read More
TUAW's Daily Mac App: Carousel
Calendar16 Tue, 07 Jun 2011 20:45:00 UTC +00:00
Carousel from Mobelux isn't the first Instagram client for the Mac, but it is one of the most elegant. The program culls your Instagram feed and streams these images to your desktop in a gorgeous UI that resembles an old-fashioned photo album. Three buttons along the bottom toggle your view among current favorites, your feed and your photos. On each image, you select a person's avatar to see their profile, like the image by clicking on a heart or add a comment by clicking on the word bubble. You can save images by dragging them to iPhoto or saving through the drop-down menu. Carousel features a number of keyboard shortcuts that expands usability of the app, but you can only view pictures, not upload them from your Mac. You also can't search for other Instagram users, photos or tags at this point, which is a drawback. You'll have to do this Read More

Instagram schlägt seine Zähne in Drittanbieter-Apps
Calendar16 Mon, 06 Jun 2011 11:08:01 UTC +00:00
Read More

Why Fashion Photographers Are Flocking to Instagram

UPDATE: The photos in this article were processed using a variety of apps, including Camera+, Hipstamatic and Filter Mania. All were shared to Instagram after processing. It’s little wonder that Instagram, a leading iPhone application for stylizing and sharing photos on the web, is proving so popular among street style photographers, some of whom have amassed followings in the thousands. What is unusual is that before Instagram, many of these well-followed photographers had done little to no street style photography in their portfolios. “I started using Instagram about two weeks after it launched in the App Store and just fiddled around with pictures of my family and friends,” says Anthony Danielle, who publishes images (right) of stylish New Yorkers to some 18,000 followers under the pseudonym takinyerphoto. “I’d see other people doing street work and thought, ‘I could do that,’ and I just started taking pictures of people on the street.” Read More
The Burbn boys have released a new version of Instagram into the wild. Instagram 1.8 is the latest version of the iPhone-meets-Polaroid-Swinger-meets-Twitter social photography app, and it's available for an update on the App Store now. What's changed? The app is somewhat faster and more reliable, but the big change is in how you can "like" a photo in your Instagram stream, interact with comments and enter usernames. First, photos can now be marked with "like" by double-tapping them. With that simple gesture and a big white heart icon appearing briefly (see image at right) for feedback, you know that you've just sent someone a big thumbs-up on their photographic effort. In comments, you can now start mentioning someone by typing @ and the first few characters of someone's username, and Instagram will do its best to autocomplete the name. The Instagram comment feature also gained an interactive comment screen where Read More

You can choose to share your creations on the site if you like as well.  I haven’t tried the service out as yet, but it looks like another promising one (the first I saw was this one) and at the low, low cost of free it can’t hurt to give it a whirl if you’re looking for ways to print and share your Instagram creations. Instagram Adds Bios, Grid View For Profile Pages
Calendar16 Tue, 17 May 2011 02:17:44 UTC +00:00
If you’re like me Instagram has become a service you check the first thing you wake up in the morning, alongside Twitter and Facebook. My Instagram addiction has seriously gotten to the point where I anticipate the app’s bi-monthly updates (Tilt Shift is the best thing to happen to photo sharing addicts since sliced bread, or something). So what’s new in Version 1.7?  The most obvious change is that when you click on someone’s photo history, the app now shows you a grid view instead of a laborious feed view, but lets you toggle between them both. Users also now have the option to add a bio to their profiles by going to Account > Edit profile > Bio, upload a profile picture from Twitter and Facebook (Account > Change profile picture) and drill down into which profile notifications they actually want to receive based on their Instagram follow graph. How To Use Tilt-Shift in Instagram
Calendar16 Tue, 29 Mar 2011 16:42:22 UTC +00:00
Posted 03/29/2011 at 8:42am | by Ambika Subramony Instagram is our favorite photo sharing and editing app -- not just because it's free, but because it's packed with fun features. The app's newest update brings us something we've long been doing with various other apps: tilt-shift editing. Tilt-shift photography, normally done with an actual tilt-shift lens, alters the depth of field of what you're capturing, allowing you to emphasize certain objects in the photo. This effect can easily be imitated using Photoshop, or more easily with an app like Instagram. It isn't true tilt-shifting (some call it tilt-shift faking), but it's very similar to it. The resulting effect blurs the setting around your chosen subject, making the subject look small and toy-like. Pretty simple, right? Simple, but you don't want to tilt-shift just any photo. So, we're going to show you how to produce beautiful tilt-shift images! Instagram now has tilt-shift Read More

Instagram, the popular (and ever getting more popular) photo sharing app, just got a nice new update for SXSW (because if you've got a "cool" app and you're not updating it for SXSW, then you might as well just shut down shop altogether). First, for photos, there's a new tilt-shift effect, resulting in those sort of miniature train model-looking scenes that you're probably used to from HP advertisements and Vimeo videos and the like. It's Instagram's first foray into an effect, per se, as opposed to a simple filter, so that's fun. And then there's the new news feed—it's been revamped to be more like Facebook's, emphasizing your friends' activity over your own in an effort to help you find new people to follow. The app, as always, is free. [iTunes, Screenshots via TechCrunch] Read More
For all the talk of group messaging apps being the breakout hits at SXSW this year, most people are overlooking another genre: mobile photo-sharing apps. But that’s probably because a few of those apps already are pretty big hits. Take Instagram, for example. The app already has well over 2 million users, even though it’s not even six months old yet. For some context, when Foursquare successfully launched at SXSW two years ago, they left town with just 5,000 users. But just because Instagram has had some early success, that doesn’t mean they don’t recognize the value of putting out a new app in time for SXSW. And this morning we get just that. And it’s brings two pretty significant upgrades. The first big addition is a new camera feature called tilt-shift. If you’re a camera app fanatic, you’ll undoubtedly already know what this is. For everyone else, it’s a new Read More
iPad: Flipboard, the social "digital magazine" for the iPad, dropped an update today that not only added support for social photogrophy network Instagram, but also a neat social search function and some awesome speed improvements that make it much more usable. Flipboard was pretty cool when it first came out, and it's slowly been stepping up its game ever since, first adding Flickr and Google Reader support, and now adding Instagram support along with a bunch of usability improvements. You can add Instagram's photo feed just like any other feed, and the social search function lets you see posts across all your different feeds on a specific subject, by using keywords and hashtags. My personal favorite part of the update, though, is the speed increase. I like Flipboard a lot, but it moved pretty darn sluggishly before, which is annoying when you're trying to flip through articles. This update makes the Read More

Print real Instagram photos with Instaprint

Some of us here at TUAW are real fans of Instagram, which is a fun and easy to use free app that takes photos with your iPhone camera, then gives you the option to add various effects, frames, and filters to those photos before sending them out to your favorite social network. Others deride Instagram for being the "auto-tune of iPhone photography," but I've found it to be a fast and fun way to send out quick snapshots of daily life. Back in the dinosaur days of the 60's and 70's, Polaroid instant cameras were the way to get quick, easily viewable snapshots. Instagram photo sharing service reaches two million users
Calendar16 Tue, 15 Feb 2011 22:00:00 UTC +00:00
Picture-sharing service Instagram (driven only by the popularity of its free iOS app) has hit a whopping 2 million users already. As TechCrunch notes, the service hit its first million users in just three months, and six weeks after that, it has doubled that number. That's pretty astounding growth -- even other popular sharing services usually don't hit those milestones until a year or more after they start operation. But Instagram certainly seems like it's hitting at the right place and time -- it's a super simple sharing service that offers a lot of features that tie in very well with all of its users walking around with connected HD cameras in their pockets. Instagram doesn't even have an Android app yet (though presumably we'll see one very soon), and also noted by TechCrunch, you can't even sign up for the service on the website -- it's all driven through Apple's Read More

Instagram introduces hashtags to latest App update
Calendar16 Sun, 30 Jan 2011 12:57:50 UTC +00:00
In my review of the photo-sharing app meets community Instagram I voiced my concern that the developers would spoil the app in future updates. I needn’t have worried. The latest version dropped this past Thursday, adding hashtags, smart comment management and the option of blocking/flagging unwanted folllowers. So far, so good. The introduction of hashtags to Instagram feels like one of those natural evolutionary features that you kinda felt always needed to be there, it was only a matter of time. Those familiar with twitter already use this feature as an effective way to find topics/tweets/links using tags. Over the past few days I’ve been testing it in IG like many others, tagging 50 of my own new and archived photos in various ways; the results are immensely satisfying. Now there’s not only the feed or popular pages to browse through – but also pages with tags according to techniques (eg. Read More
Instagram adds hashtags, brands already love them
Calendar16 Fri, 28 Jan 2011 15:30:00 UTC +00:00
Instagram -- the app all the cool kids with iPhones use to snap, filter, and share pictures -- has received an update yesterday that adds support for hashtags. These work in a similar fashion to the way they do on Twitter. You can tag a photo you share by adding a hashtag either in the caption or comment field. Each hashtag gets its own page , which you can get to by clicking on a hashtag underneath a photo you're viewing or searching for hashtags using the new search functionality that you can find after you tap on your account name in the app. Each tag even has its own RSS feed that you can subscribe to, if you wish -- these are available by replacing "yourhashtag" from the following URL with the name of the tag you want to follow: http://instagr.am/tags/yourhashtag/feed/recent.rss Basically, an Instagram hashtag is much like a photo Read More
Did you come to the Crunchies? If so, did you use Instagram to take a picture? If so, did you hashtag it with anything? If you did, you helped create something cool, you just didn’t realize it. One of the things that makes Instagram great is its simplicity. You take a picture, add a filter, upload, and then off you go to explore other pictures in the stream. Unfortunately, unless you happen to be looking at the stream around the time a picture is taken, you may never see it. Sure, Twitter, Facebook and other integration points help with this somewhat, but there simply hasn’t been a good way to surface older pictures on Instagram before. A new feature launching today may change that. Instagram is launching hashtag support with the latest version of the app today. Users of Twitter will be well aware of the hashtag phenomenon, but it actually Read More
By Georgia, Wednesday, Jan 26, 2011 | If you could only have 5 apps on your iPhone what would they be and why? We’re talking App Store apps here, not built-in apps like Safari. Do You Use Instagram?
Calendar16 Tue, 18 Jan 2011 16:45:37 UTC +00:00
Instagram has been in the news a lot over the past week, hitting the headlines for passing the 1 million user mark and for several well-known brands joining the fun.  Yesterday saw the iPhone app receive a small update too, bringing a pair of new filters, the return of an old filter and a few performance tweaks too. If you’re not familiar with Instagram, it’s a photo-based social network that’s currently only for iPhone users, where you can upload any picture on your phone, add various filter effects and publish it on your own Instagram page.  We particularly like how easy it is to cross post that snap to Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr and so on.  The app is free to download and simple to use. The ability to share between other social networks is a big advantage, because you don’t have to build up a following on yet another social site, Read More
Read More

You Got An iPhone. Now What?
Calendar16 Wed, 29 Dec 2010 17:12:20 UTC +00:00
The gift-giving holidays have just wrapped up (no pun intended) and that means ‘s have been unwrapped all around the world this year. If this is your first iPhone, congratulations and welcome to the club (even though you are a bit late to the game). There are thousands of apps, customizations, and accessories to try, but where should you start? Here’s an IntoMobile list of the best ways to take advantage of your new iPhone. Battery life on the iPhone has been a problem since Apple first released Push email functionality. Turning off Push email significantly increases battery life. To do this go to Settings -> Mail, Contacts, Calendars -> Fetch New Data and toggle the “Push” setting to the “OFF” position. Note: Push email and Push notifications are not the same thing. I constantly receive Push notifications from Twitter and Instagram without affecting battery life. Unfortunately, if you are an iPhone owner, Read More

Camera+ coming back to the App Store
Calendar16 Mon, 20 Dec 2010 19:00:00 UTC +00:00
Do you remember Camera+? It was the amazing US$1.99 photography app from development house tap tap tap that ended up getting yanked from the App Store after the developers used the iPhone volume button as a camera shutter button. In a postscript to a blog entry today, tap tap tap let it slip that Camera+ is on the way back to the App Store. The teaser comment says that it's currently in review, and that this will be the "biggest update yet." Let's hope that they stay within the sometimes ridiculous guidelines for App Store approval, and that the app is as successful in its second incarnation as it was in the first. Camera+ might face an uphill battle for renewed market share, however. One of the cool features of the app was its ability to share apps to Twitter, Facebook and Flickr with one tap. Since Camera+ went missing, the Read More
iPhone wielding hipsters rejoice, Instragram just released an update for their popular image sharing application that adds support for 7 languages (Japanese, German, Russian, French, Chinese, Italian, and Spanish), 2 new filters called “Sutro” and “Toaster”, and a “suggested users” feature that pairs you up with people who hang out in the same parts of town that you roam around while showing off your skinny jeans and new MacBook Air. There’s little else to comment on here, so just head on over to iTunes, grab the app, and start snapping away! Do you use photo sharing applications or just wait until you get home to upload your pics to the net? That’s the category I belong to, and while that might make me boring compared to today’s constantly connected generation with their heads buried in their iPhone, I’ve yet to take a picture that needed immediate display to my Facebook friends. I’m Alex Jordan, and Here Are My Top Five iOS Apps
Calendar16 Tue, 14 Dec 2010 03:38:21 UTC +00:00
Hello everyone. I’m Alex Jordan, one of the new authors here at iSource. I thought I’d break the ice by telling you the top five iOS apps I can’t live without. So, let’s jump right in. Instagram is a unique social network, that as far as I can tell, stems solely from an iOS app. There is no website to go to, no other clients to access the service except for the official Instagram app. What is Instagram? Well, you take pictures, apply filters (or not), and post them, and view other’s photos. Like any other social network, you can comment on other’s posts, or “like” them. Think of it as “Facebook, but only for pictures.” On the surface it seems a little pointless, I’ll admit. However, you really should give it a try. It’s free, and easy to sign up. Surprise, surprise, Pandora Radio made the list. Yeah, Pandora has Read More

It’s hard for me to talk about Instagram without gushing about its deceptively appealing attributes and sweetly addictive nature. After 2 weeks of compulsive pointing, shooting, sharing pics, I am no longer capable of reporting objectively about it. However, I invite you to read on for my take on why it’s unique and why it’s set to establish itself as a must-have app. Instagram made its debut just weeks ago on 6 October 2010 and is rumoured to have gained close to one million avid users in that short time. Available only for iPhone at the moment, this is a decidedly astonishing number. The already countless number of great photography, cameras, filters and effects apps notwithstanding, Instagram has merged photography and iPhone to form a special kind of love affair. One where ease and aesthetics rule. The best way to describe it is to say that it’s like twitter for photos. Read More
TiPb Picks of the Week

By Leanna Lofte, Sunday, Dec 5, 2010 | Every week a few of us from team TiPb will bring you our current favorite, funnest, most useful App Store apps, WebApps, jailbreak apps, even the occasional accessory, web site, or desktop app if the mood strikes us. As long as they’re iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch related, they’re fair game. To see what we picked this week, and to tell us your pick, follow on after the break! I haven’t used a day runner or paper calendar since my first Palm Pilot. To me, this is the real magic of using a handheld digital device. Photography apps are ridiculously easy to find in the app store. There are quite literally hundreds of options to choose from and it can be really hard to find one that works for you. I personally prefer Apple’s default option for taking pictures, but one app did catch my eye. Instagram is a simple app for taking pictures and sharing them with the world. What makes this app so special to me is the different retro filters you can apply to your images which really add a neat look to your shots. The app is focused around a twitter-like follow feature where you can find different users and follow their updates. For power users this is an amazing way to find other awesome photography. Casual users will be happy to find they can take a photo, add an effect, and immediately post a link to it on Facebook, Twitter, and other Read More

There is a plethora of various photo apps around, both for taking pictures and for sharing them on social networks. But Instagram is an excellent solution for both, and it's elegant enough to make you reconsider your current workflow. Personally, I've just been taking pictures with the standard camera app and uploading them with the official Twitter app. But Instagram adds the ability to make your photos artistic with a wide number of filters, add location and social network data to them in the app itself, then share them with any number of social networks, from simple stuff like Twitter and Facebook to more complicated connections like Flickr and even Tumblr. The app is completely free, too, and they're planning to keep it that way. There may be add-ons for filters in the future (or, I presume, some advertising on the actual Web pages created by the pictures), but how awesome Read More

Instagram Has Made Me an iPhone Photo Addict

I have a new favorite iPhone app. And I'm not alone. After only a week in the iPhone App Store, the photo-sharing app Instagram has won not just the adoration of many in the tech media, but has netted well over 100,000 users. And according to co-founder Kevin Systrom, Instagram is now counting new user sign-ups by the minute and counting photo uploads by the second. Instagram is a free app, a simple photo-sharing tool that allows you to snap pictures and easily post them to your Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr, and Flickr accounts. You can follow others via Instagram's social network, allowing you to view and comment on others' photos. Instagram also includes 11 filters for your photos, turning the photos taken by the camera phone - photos that even under the steadiest of hands and keenest of eyes tend to be rather mediocre - from the mundane to the spectacular. Jeebus, did you guys even try this thing? It's a SERVICE. A photo-sharing social-media SERVICE with a photo app attached. Which means you have to register to use it. The service works, the photo app works, the filters are nice. I agree that high-res images would be a big improvement. But cripes, why don't you try understanding what the app does before you slag it, mmkay?

So far I have been unable to register, and so I am totally unable to try the app. *sigh* I miss Camera+. I hope taptaptap gets it back into the app store again soon. I've been looking for an alternative that supports geotagging but so far I'm not sure this is it.

Good reason why this isn't iPhone's goto photo app. Too many steps to saving a pic to the roll and then it doesn't always save the pic (frustrating). It also keeps saying it can't refresh the feed and posting to FB or twitter? Forget it. Good try. I'll keep using hipstamatic.
Social
danmcg 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
Wonder photo based social app. Great filters to run and a fun way to explore pictures from all over. Even the amateurs (like me) take good pics!
Not even close.
Lee-K 1.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
This app will not be taken seriously until the two main problems that are continuously mentioned are fixed. Hope the developers get with it so this thing can be taken seriously.
Cant register

Seems cool but doesnt let register. Bummer.
Best photo app available
Billieve 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
Alone or in combination with other photo-processing apps, Instagram is awesome. Great sharing and discovery capabilities. It's an absolute steal for free and one of few apps to deserve a solo spot on the home screen.
Social app first, camera app a close second
giromide 4.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
The developers at Burbn made some reasonable trade-offs when building this. The low resolution pictures make sense for iPhone 3GS users who don't want to wait and for network usage. I would not be surprised if an update to this allows for saving higher resolution files locally. The social aspect is what really shines here. It's slick. It's simple. It shares with FIVE services. Tip: If you have any issues with Tumblr OAuth, log out, log back in and reauthorize via a new picture submission. Gripe: Sharing settings need to be controlled independent of photo submission. I don't want to submit a photo just to tweak sharing settings. Also, I shouldn't have to re-enter them after logging out of Instagram.
Nice program
jkapcoe 4.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
This is a pretty interesting program. It allows you to take a picture, add some filters, and then upload to their sharing site. You can then review other peoples pictures, tag them if you like them, and then add comments right from within the application. Pretty similiar to Best Camera except that the this program is a little bit more socially integrated as it tags your name to the "like" list if you do select it. The ability to add comments and see comments from within the app is a nice touch. The only real drawback is the lower res file support. I would have given it 5 stars if it did. I assume that this will change in the future. It would be nice if you could save a high res file locally and, separately, upload a lower res file.
Solid cool app.

Quick and easy sharing. Signing up was painless but wish it coulda used Oauth or twitter or something else. But the app is nice and fast.
It's about time!
jayzombie 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
Instagram has quickly becoming one of my most used & favorite photography applications on the iPhone. Beautifully designed, easy to use, and connected to my major social networks. THIS is what social photography was missing.
Great app minus one issue
aaroninflash 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
When you either take pictures off from camera or grab some photos off from library, added some effects and sometime it'll save into library and sometime not. Please fix this issue. Keep up the great work!
Incredible

Near flawless execution. Only non-default app besides Facebook and Simplenote to land on my home screen.
Addictive, perfect for procrastinators

I absorb text/info through twitter. Instagram is how I absorb photos, delicious photos. The filters, oh my. Looking forward to more. Follow me @abbott :)
UPDATE Pt. 3
xwhiteboy777x 3.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
Finally able to use the app. I like it. The social aspect is really nice. Full resolution needs to happen. The devs seem to be listening. This could be a 5 star app. The 1:1 ratio is cool, it adds consistency to the entire app. This could be a Hipstamatic killer if there were more frame and lens options. I'm looking forward to updates. I hope to give this app more stars soon. For an app with low resolution you sure are popular. Not good... Mandatory Login? I don't need another social network. Low Resolution 612x612? Do your homework. This is unacceptable. The effects look alright but this app is not ready to be here. I think it may have potential. Get rid of the login. Keep updating the effects and borders. Full resolution support. You've got a long way to go. Go home and try again.
It's great.

It's a terrific editing app. The resolution could be better though. And more filters would be nice, too! :) Otherwise, I really love it! And the app icon is PERFECT. love it.
Cool app!

Good stuff.
Seems to work now...
hamsammich 4.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
...but I can't get anything to connect. I can't get my feed to show and I can't upload a photo using any of the services. Also, I can't even navigate to the developer's site, so I can't see if there's any known issues. I'm sure there are a ton of people trying it out today, but until I can actually use it, I'll have to give it three stars. --UPDATE-- Now, all seems to be well. I've gotten the service working and have begun networking with people. Nice, easy UI.
Login... really?
Clown Baby 1.0 stars Version: 1.0.3
Forcing users to create an account to use the app is unacceptable. I don't care much for apps that require this. This is a 1 star app till there is and option to create or not create an account.

Not sure what all these 5 stars are on about, seems odd that almost none of them mention the fact that you need to sign up..
Great!

Needs some fixes

The password field on the sign up page appears in plaintext. This is a big problem and made me decide not to sign up to use the service.
No Thanks

Good eye catcher and seemed even better when I found out it's free. I deleted it when I realized that it's mandatory to sign up & submit your photos.

For a brand new service and app I'm so impressed. I never thought taking and posting pics could be so addictive. Can't wait to see what they do next!
Forced Logon!!
CincyMapper 2.0 stars Version: 1.0.3
Forcing a login to use is obnoxious. I'm highly skeptical of so many five star ratings when the app requires an email address and password just use. No way around creating a login.
Love it

I am so pissed with instagram. It was fine when I bought it but now there a constant bugs. I dont even use the camera function on it because it is so slow and buggy and it crashes. So disappointed. How can you buy something that works, then the company breaks it and then gives it back to you? Crappy.

This is an amazing app just wish it had a "save" ability for pictures
Not sure about instagram
JClagg 3.0 stars Version: 2.0.6
I'm indifferent about instagram. I believe a great picture is in the eye of the beholder. I'm very confused about the pictures they choose for the popular page. Some of the same people get chosen over and over. Some photos look like something a newborn would take if they were capable. To me, that's a bit frustrating. Instagram says there are many variables that go into choosing. I think I've got some fantastic ones, but have never been chosen. So, that's a negative in my book. Everyone should have the opportunity to shine.
Nice

Love this app!! You guys should add a button so you can add favorites. Like, I follow a lot of people and it gets hard to find my ACTUAL friend's pictures. So I could add them to my favorites and easily access their page. Please consider this. Thanks (:
