INSPIRO and Instapaper for iPhone and iPad
Calendar16 Sat, 06 Nov 2010 16:53:51 UTC +00:00
Instapaper ($4.99; Lite version available) saves articles to an Instapaper account so that you can read them later. INSPIRO ($3.99) is an idea generator to help stir your creative juices. But those icons sure do like alike to me — especially on my 3GS’ screen. I’m not accusing INSPIRO of having copied Instapaper — I was just surprised to see a giant “I” on the Featured tab of the App Store that wasn’t Instapaper. Read More

I know that Instapaper is mega popular, and I may well give the web-to-text service another shot someday, but for now, I’m really enjoying Read it Later. I’m currently using the free app to aggregate all the interesting links from my Twitter and Google Reader accounts. Yes, you read that correctly: I’m using a secondary aggregator to further organize the stuff from my primary aggregators. Heck, this probably doesn’t actually classify as a tip, but more of a “hey, check out Read it Later” post, since what I’m describing is exactly what the service is for. The main advantage of using RIL is that it allows me to meta-star links from my iPhone or Mac that I’d like to keep for posting or archiving. Google Reader and Twitter both have starring systems, but until recently, I’ve had to check them both separately, and it’s been a pain to deal with doubles. Read More
App Update: Instapaper Pro
Calendar16 Sat, 24 Apr 2010 18:20:24 UTC +00:00
Instapaper Pro, an excellent app that allows you to read saved webpages without internet connectivity (and one of my go-to apps on my iPhone and iPad), has just been updated with several new features, with the most notable being the redesign of the reading screen on the iPad version. Instead of being located at the bottom of the screen, the controls (font, brightness, favorites etc) are now at the top, similar to what you’ll find on Apple’s iPad Safari browser. Other changes specific to the iPad include: New additions that affect all iDevices (including iPhone/iPod Touch) include: If you’re already an Instapaper Pro user, this update should make your offline reading experience even more enjoyable. And for those of you who’ve yet to check out Instapaper, I highly recommend you give the Free version a go. It doesn’t have all the features that the Pro comes with, but it’s still fully Read More

Instapaper Pro for iPad Preview
Calendar16 Wed, 24 Mar 2010 13:22:47 UTC +00:00
By Rene Ritchie, Wednesday, Mar 24, 2010 | Developer Marco Arment has posted some preview pictures for the coming soon-as-possible iPad version of his terrific Instapaper Pro app, and provided some interesting commentary into the design and thinking behind the rapid release plan. If you’re not familiar with Instapaper, it’s a software/services combo that lets you quickly mark interesting articles you come across to “read later” either via a bookmarklet in your browser or via embedded support in other apps like NetNewsWire or Tweetie. You can then go to the Instapaper website or open the Instapaper Free [Free - iTunes link] or Instapaper Pro [$4.99 - iTunes link] app on your iPhone or iPod touch (and soon iPad) and enjoy those articles in a highly read-optimized form. Geek candy, to be sure. As to the iPad-specific version, Arment says the pixel-doubled iPhone version on the iPad was not acceptable (something we’ve Read More

By Staff, Monday, Nov 30, 2009 | Every week a few of us from team TiPb, bloggers and forum crew alike, will bring you our current favorite, funnest, most useful App Store apps, WebApps, jailbreak apps, even the occasional accessory, web site, or desktop app if the mood strikes us. As long as they’re iPhone (or iPod touch) related, they’re fair game. So who’s on deck this week and what are our picks? Find out after the break! This week I am picking Q Entertainment’s Lumines. This game came out a little while ago with poor fanfare due to the horrible controls. Good news? There is now and update that fixes these issues and this game is now a pleasure to play. You even have in-app purchasing for additional theme packs. The music is not as good as the original IMO, but still fun!! [$2.99 - iTunes link] BitFlip is a Read More
The popular offline web page viewer, Instapaper Pro, has just received a relatively useful update that adds a bunch of new features, including the ability to share articles on Tumblr and Twitter. Instapaper Pro is an easy-to-use app for the iPhone and iPod touch that allows you to conveniently save web pages for later viewing.  The app is able to save pages in graphical or text mode, star recommended articles, save your position, adjust text and font sizes, and so much more.  Instapaper Pro is a must-have app for anyone who is constantly on-the-go and just can’t find time to read important articles during the day. Instapaper Pro v2.1 now features the ability to share articles on Tumblr or Twitter with built-in client support, send articles to supported Twitter apps if you have them installed, email articles without leaving the Instapaper, non-article screens no longer rotate, interface and speed improvements, and Read More

TwitterFon has been one of the more successful free Twitter applications available for the iPhone and iPod touch.  It offers a simple and clean interface, and it includes only the most essential features since it is available for free, but a recent update to TwitterFon added advertisements which caused a bit of a stir among the applications faithful fans.  If you are one of those long-time TwitterFon users who just can’t stand advertisements, you might want to check out developer Kazuho Okui’s new version of TwitterFon titled TwitterFon Pro. TwitterFon Pro offers the same simple and clean interface that you have come to expect from TwitterFon, but it adds a ton more features to make all of you Twitterholics even more efficient. TwitterFon Pro features multiple account support, four different themes, a landscape keyboard for easy typing, saved searches, Instapaper integration, and more. Of course TwitterFon Pro is ad-free, which may be Read More
iPhone developers have often struggled to make sense of Apple's iPhone app store approval process. A recent rejection of Instapaper Pro ($9.99 from iTunes)--a tool that saves Web pages for reading later--is just as baffling. The app has already been available in the store as both a free (iTunes link) and a paid app, but the latest 1.4 version was denied by Apple. According to the author of the app, Marco Arment, Instapaper Pro 1.4 was rejected because of the "middle icon" in the graphic below. Arment writes on his Web site that the iPhone-like icon was designed by Joshua Keay for FileMagnet (iTunes link) and was "generously offered to me for Instapaper 1.4". Arment goes on to say: Apple responded to Arment by stating: We've reviewed Instapaper Pro and determined that we cannot post this version of your iPhone application to the App Store because of an Apple trademark image. Alex Bain 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
All day long I get emailed interesting-looking but lengthy articles from friends, and I never chip away at them,b/c I'm at my desk working. Later on, these same articles (typically from The New Yorker, The Slate, or maybe just a fascinating but wordy blog post), would be great fodder for a plane or subway ride, but they're unavailable b/c I'm offline.

Ridiculous
hibby27 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
Great idea, and the price is right, but OMG what a goat roap to get the thing up and running. Some instructions would be helpful as it’s a rather complicated process involving installing stuff on your computer and then syncing the phone before the web app will work on the phone. And really, I wouldn’t even have minded doing all that, if it hadn’t taken forever to find the obscure place that explained the installation process. And then after all that, the thing still doesn’t work. I give up, too much of a big pain in the...
Handy!
brianisinyou 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
I've been using Instapaper since its release, and I've found it to be a great tool for web browsing. The "Read Later" bookmarklet acts as sort of a tivo for the internet, allowing you to catch up on your favorite content at your own convenience.
Great app version of a great site
Willow1013 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
I had this site on my home screen already, but this app has replaced that and then some. The fact that I can read saved articles when riding the bus when I am out of WiFi range is great. Obviously that is a feature with iPod touch users in mind.
Took a bit of work, but worth it!
karena427 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Now I am able to read offline and to me, that's worth it. Thanks for the great app!
C'mon Already, Get your stuff together before releasing this "beta" quality garbage

Nice idea, poor execution. Why?
Finally a reason to use my Instapaper Account
Slicky Boyd 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Months ago, I'd set up an Instalaper account based upon some web 2.0 guru's glowing recommendation. Together with this new iPod Touch and this app, the Instapaper account allows me the chance to load this thing up with reading material for when I don't have Wifi access. It's a winner.
Everyone Should Have Instapaper
triewer 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
This application is fantastic. And it's incredibly simple. It's a customizable news aggregator that lets you choose articles you'd like to read and come back to them later (even when you're offline). It's that easy. I have nothing to gripe about. This is how I want to use my iphone.
You won't belive me!!!
iNaveen 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
Oh man, you won't belive me howmuch I was waiting for this feature on iphone and now there's an app that can do this. Reading offline webpages is a cool idea. Apple should have given this feature by feature built in into the iphone OS.
This is such a smart app

I love Instapaper!
femmebot 4.0 stars Version: 1.0

Really Useful Little App!
benjaminste.in 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
I've been using Instapaper on the web since its release, and I'm thrilled with the offline iPhone version. For years I've wanted something useful to do with my phone when I'm offline (or when EDGE makes browsing impossible) and Instapaper has finally cracked that nut. It's brilliant in its simplicity. So many of the early iPhone apps are just packaged up web pages, so it's great to see something original that solves a real problem. And it's free!
Amazing especially for iPod Touch
Makris 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
Easily save pages to your device! I've been waiting for an offline news reader like this since the iPhone came out.
Awesome little app (and free!)
MrMofongo 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
The best thing about this app is not only the ability to save quickly save webpages for later viewing, but also the ability to *read only the text* of the web page. Since I use this to read news articles, it's great to just be able to have the text in a font that is easy to read and where I can just scroll down. It seems to do a great job of parsing the relevant text out of the web page for you. But if I want to look a the images, I can pop back over the to "web" view and see them too! Gives me exactly what I need at a price I can't complain about. Thanks Marco!
Very Useful!
J Wart 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
This is a nice app and has come in handy several times when traveling with my iTouch. Definately worth downloading! : )
Perfect application for iPhone
kishba 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
I've used the web app on my desktop extensively, and this is a natural extension for it. Whenever an article is too long to finish, I use Instapaper to mark it for later. Having an offline copy in my pocket is a HUGE convenience. I can't wait for additional features, but it's indespensible already.
Great, simple, well-polished app.
koldewyse 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
It does what it should do, and it's good at it. Instapaper is an excellent service by itself on the web, but this mobile app makes it the best thing since potato salad.
Amazing Concept
"Showtime" 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
Who hasn't come across a website they like, but then run out of time or have to go. This app saves it for reading later. App does as it states. I simple concept sometimes goes a long way. Amazing idea and app. Thanks for making it. =).
Great way to extend usefulness a great FREE online service
Jaymstr 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
Even though I have just downloaded this app, my limited use of it tells me that it will be an invaluable to my iPod Touch. Now, whenever I am away from a wifi connection, I can catch up on articles that I've been meaning to read. Since I'm typically pretty bored without wifi, this is great because I'll still have plenty of material to read and catch up on. Also, it integrates perfectly with the web based version of Instapaper. This thing is beautiful in it simplicity. I give it a 4 only because I know it has some room to grow, but it could easily become a 5.

lauravs 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
i am so glad this finally appeared on the app store-i've been looking for it for the last two days. no more pulling up pages and typing in addresses to find something to read when i'm bored, or feeling bad that i can't concentrate on a really interesting article right this second. seriously, this is the app i never knew i always wanted. get it.
Wonderful

I wish it would work
I_<3_music 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
For some reason it is not working on my iPod touch. Too bad!! I was really looking forward to using this app. Hopefully the glitches will be ironed out in the next update!
Great App
E4tH 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Very useful for people that are too busy to read an article at the moment but would like to read it later.
2 minute install
Oculos 5.0 stars Version: 1.3
Jan 31, 2009: I installed Instapaper on my iPhone and on my computer in about two minutes. No problem. Contrary to another reviewer, your saved pages are not stored at a website, but in the memory of your iPhone. You view them offline, exactly as stated. Except.. For some reason, one page I saved said " Not available offline, would you like to go online?" But that was just that one page. As previously stated, you might like to save a page and view it in Instapaper instead of Safari because it's easier to read there. Follow the instructions on the website on your computer to put the "Read Later" in your Bookmarks bar. After you do that, sync your iPhone and be sure that in your syncing preferences you sync Bookmarks. Now, when you are in Safari on your iPhone, if you want to save a page, tap the Bookmarks icon, go to Bookmarks bar, and "Read Later" will be right there. Tap it. Bingo, page saved to Instapaper. Or you can save pages on your computer by tapping "Read Later" in the Bookmarks Bar, and then read them later on your iPhone in Instapaper. Someone also said they couldn't delete pages, but that is simple. Tap edit, touch the minus sign in front of the page you want to delete, and then tap delete. This app installs in a breeze and works perfect.
really useful app - a paradigm change
ThisNicknameWasTaken 5.0 stars Version: 1.3
I love Instapaper. It is one of my top iPhone apps. Now I actually READ all those articles I was saving to "get to when I have time." I just wish there was a way to integrate it with my RSS Reader (Google Reader). I'd even switch readers if another one provided "Read Later" support. Anyway, the free app is great and I'll probably upgrade to the pro. I hope that more people discover how great this is.
Don't upgrade from 1.3 to 2.1
Nutmac 3.0 stars Version: 2.1
Although 2.1 adds few features and improvements, it does so at the expense of removing "remembering last read position" feature. Perhaps 1.3 was meant to be a "pro" feature, but it seems wrong to remove something major without making it known to the public. While I am all for author making money through ads (and 10 webpage limitation seems more than fair to me), I advise others against upgrading. As for the new features, the UI is somewhat nicer and it seems a bit faster (not by much though). But none are groundbreaking must have.
Don't Upgrade
JMedina 1.0 stars Version: 2.1
It's a shame that most people reading these reviews are new downloaders that have no idea how great v1.3 was and are stuck with this mess that they created it into. I have no problem adding ads and a limit of ten articles is reasonable. However, it's beyond all logic to take away the ability to remember your place. The whole point of this app is to use it when an article is too long, and now it'll consist of constant scrolling and re-reading. This I'm sure will lead many people to either look for another similar app, or looking to google on how to downgrade back to when it was useable. We can all understand that money needs to be made, but you have to keep your common sense.
Don't upgrade to the most recent version...
mcanaca 2.0 stars Version: 2.1.1
With the most recent version you are now limited to having 10 articles at a time, which is a dramatic decrease from what they used to allow. I wouldn't recommend updating unless they change this back to how it used to be. Don't get me wrong, the app is great, but this new limitation is somewhat disappointing.
