QuickCam

| $0.99 | Two Teeth Technologies
Have you ever shot a video on your iPhone then uploaded it to your computer just so you could grab a few screenshots from the video? Well, it’s now safe to say there’s an app for that, and it is called QuickPix. QuickPix allows you to snap photos while capturing video. The photos are sent directly to your camera roll for easy access. But that’s not all… The app includes features like RapidFire mode that allows you to take up to 14 photos per second, depending on your device, and QuickPic mode, which makes the app automatically capture a shot upon launching it. With an average 4 star rating, QuickPix seems to be the way to go. You can pick up QuickPix in the App Store now on the iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, and the iPad 2 for the price of $1.99. If you decide to give it a try, please let us know what you think about QuickPix. Read More

Camera+

| $0.99 | tap tap tap
iPhone photography, dubbed ‘iPhoneography‘, seems to be the new hip thing among iPhone users. It’s much easier to carry your iPhone around to take photos than an expensive DSLR, and with popular apps like Camera+, Instagram, and Camera Bag, you can take equally stunning shots. Interestingly, a UK college wants to teach its students this new method… BBC reports that London’s Kensington and Chelsea College is launching a new course to teach students about iPhoneography. The college thinks many iPhone users don’t know how to use their iPhone to take photographs properly. The course, led by Richard Gray, requires each student to have an iPhone. Mr. Gray will teach students about the basics of photography like color, light, and composition, but will also teach them to use iOS apps to make collages and more. Along with this upcoming class at Kensington and Chelsea College, Mr. Gray hosts a workshop at local London Apple Store teaching the concept. When the BBC asked Gray about iPhoneography, he responded: The iPhone is revolutionising photography. It allows you to take a photograph and then process it and and post it online while you are on the bus on your way home. What do you think about iPhoneography? Is it just a bunch of want-to-be photographers? Read More

iRandomizer Numbers

| $4.99 | Shmoopi Gaming
A few days ago, we told you about QuasiDisk, an app with a hidden tethering feature that sneaked into the App Store. The app was quickly pulled after being publicized on a gazillion blogs. Today, we learned about yet another app that got through Apple’s strict approval process, hiding a tethering Easter egg. The app is called iRandomizer Numbers. It’s available in the App Store for $4.99… On the surface, iRandomizer Numbers is a random number generator. However, if you enter “1984″ in the minimum field and “31337″ in the maximum field then tap “generate”, a tethering configuration screen will appear. When contacted by Information Week, Nick Kramer, the developer of the app, claimed that: “Reluctantly, I will admit that my application ‘iRandomizer Numbers’ does have a hidden tethering feature,” he wrote. “I say reluctantly because I didn’t plan on the feature being released. I designed the tethering functionality for my family and close friends not thinking it would be disseminated outside that circle.” If interested, you should download iRandomizer Numbers before Apple pulls the plug on this app. Read More

Sprint Mobile Zone

| FREE | Sprint
Everyone needs to be able to keep tabs on their smartphone account. Even Sprint customers – we love you really! – should be able to take their iPhone and keep up to date on just what is going on with their Sprint accounts. Now they can. Sprint has today launched its own iPhone app called “Sprint Mobile Zone” and it’s actually a rather nice looking affair. More importantly, the app actually has some useful features, with the ability to access your Sprint account not the only thing you’ll be using Sprint Mobile Zone for… The free app will also allow Sprint subscribers to check out the latest offers as well as keep up to date on Sprint news. The latter in particular may come in useful so you know when Sprint finally sorts out its terrible iPhone speeds. Oh no he didn’t! “Sprint Zone offers Sprint customers immediate access to their account online, Sprint News and promotions and in addition, it offers the following for both Sprint and non-Sprint customers: Useful and good looking? That sounds like our kind of app! Shame we’re not on Sprint really. Oh who are we kidding? It’s not a shame at all. Read More

Prompt

| FREE | Panic, Inc.
Okay, so I’m switching gears a bit here and talking about an app that you can download from the App Store. Make no mistake, while I love jailbreak apps and tweaks, I also have love for many apps that can be found in the App Store. The App Store is loaded with myriads of quality apps, and Panic’s Prompt is one of them. Prompt is an SSH client, and a perfect alternative to Mobile Terminal for hardcore terminal users. Did you know It also allows you to browse the root structure of your iDevice’s file system if you’re jailbroken and have OpenSSH installed? Step 2: Download and install OpenSSH from Cydia. Step 3: Open Prompt, and use the following settings to connect to your iPhone’s root file structure. We’ve already gone in depth about what’s to like about Prompt before, so if you’re interested in some of its features give it a read. I know it’s expensive, but would you consider using Prompt as a Mobile Terminal alternative? As a big fan of Panic’s apps, for me that’s a resounding “yes.” Read More

Evi

| $0.99 | True Knowledge
Apple’s Siri is certainly not alone in trying to be our digital assistant that knows everything and can help us in any way we ask. Quite how successful Siri is in its quest will depend on how you use it and whether your accent fits, but that’s something we’ve already discussed to exhaustion. One new app which is aiming to take on Siri goes by the name of Evi, which we’re sure was chosen for one reason and one reason only – it sounds just like its competition. Evi is available for both iOS and Android, with the latter being free and the former towing a $0.99 price tag. The discrepancy is apparently down to the need to pay Nuance for the voice recognition engine – an engine that is not used in the Android version. At less than a dollar we’ll not complain too much… If you’re thinking that this might be a poor imitation of Siri then you’re in for a surprise. From our early testing and reports around the internet, Evi is proving to be something of a sleeper hit, with UK-based users particularly impressed. The main reason for that is localization due to Siri’s inability to use maps and the like outside the United States. Accuracy-wise we’d say that Evi’s success rate when providing us with the data we wanted was at least as good as Siri, with some occasions where Apple’s solution just couldn’t compete. We’ll be putting Evi through her paces over the coming days, but the initial signs are encouraging indeed, bringing the power of Siri – and some time more – to both Android and iOS devices other than the iPhone 4S. If you’re the owner of one such device then you could probably do much worse than to give Evi a whirl. Read More

GroupShot

| $0.99 | Macadamia Apps
We’ve all been in this situation: no matter how many photos you take, someone is always blinking or looking the other way. Luckily, a new app called GroupShot can help you fix that. GroupShot lets you edit your photos to perfection, by swapping out faces in the photos you’ve taken with your iPhone. This is how it works… GroupShot allows you to choose at least two photos from your camera roll, iCloud PhotoStream, or photos directly taken from your camera to be edited together. You then find the mistake in one of the photos — someone blinking or turning their head — and color over it with your finger. GroupShot will then automatically work to form the best photo, where everyone is doing what they’re supposed to do. If GroupShot didn’t form the photo you exactly wanted, you can flip through more options to find the best one that worked for you. So how does this work? The CEO of the parent company Macadamia Apps explained to TechCrunch that a very advanced algorithm is at work. The algorithm accounts for where the person’s face ends, where the background is, where the person’s hair is, how the photo is aligned, and more. With all of the technology that makes this app work, $.99 is a great deal for this app. GroupShot is now available on the App Store. Read More

Hulu Plus

| FREE | ALL APPLICATIONS BY HULU, LLC
You’ve probably heard that rumors that an official Hulu app for the Apple TV is complete and ready to go, yet Apple is holding it back from being released. Apple is worried about Hulu+ eating into its iTunes sales, so the app has been placed on hold indefinitely. For Hulu fans, that’s quite disappointing, especially considering the service is available on pretty much every other platform known to man, including the iPad, and iPhone. But there is a way to get Hulu running on the Apple TV right now. This guide will show you how to take advantage of the Seas0nPass jailbreak so that you can watch Hulu Plus on your Apple TV. Step 1: Jailbreak Your Apple TV using our tutorial and video guide below. Step 2: Install aTV Flash (black) on your Apple TV using our tutorial and video guide below. Step 3: Configure XBMC and PlayOn to establish a link to Hulu from your Apple TV. You must have Windows, but you can do this using Virtual Machine software like Parallels. Step 4: Configure PlayOn with your Hulu account information, and start watching! Total Costs: Seas0nPass Jailbreak: Free aTV Flash (black): $29.95 PlayOn Subscription: $4.99 monthly $19.95 annually or $49.99 lifetime Hulu+: $7.99 monthly Also, if you don’t have a Windows machine, you will need to invest in some sort of virtual machine environment, which could add more to the cost. Admittedly the costs involved will set you back a bit initially, but if the Apple TV is your only means of television based entertainment, it’s well worth it in my opinion. It allows you to get so much more out of the Apple TV experience. Hulu is really just the tip of the iceberg. This is absolutely great for cable cutters, don’t you agree?
