Dragon Dictation

| FREE | Nuance Communications
For me, the best free iPhone app in the Apple App Store would have to be the Dragon Dictation iPhone app. The Dragon Dictation iPhone app allows you to speak in to your iPhone and have your speech converted to text. Your text can then be sent as a text message, E-mail, or pasted in to another iPhone application using the clipboard. Pros: Cons: I’ve been using the Dragon Dictation iPhone app for about a week now and have found it really helpful. I still type with my keyboard sometimes but whenever I  need to type an e-mail using this app saves me a lot of time. It really surprised me how accurate this iPhone app was. Check it out by clicking the download link below! Let us know how it works for you. Posted on Dec 25th, 2009 by Alex in iPhone Apps | 5 Comments Related posts: Read More

MobileNavigator North America

| $69.99 | NAVIGON AG
If you have been struggling with which GPS app to buy for your iPhone, assuming you don’t already have one of course, Navigon has just sweetened the pot by putting their application on sale for only $69.99. This is $20 off the regular price and is now $30 cheaper than the TomTom app that is also available on the iPhone. In addition to the regular mobile navigator being on sale, they have also discounted the Traffic Live feature which is normally $24.99 down to $14.99. This really makes it attractive as you can have everything that they offer and still pay less than the TomTom all by itself. To make things clear, I am not comparing this to the TomTom because overall, that is the better device, at least in my opinion. However, this is now a pretty nice alternative for the money. If you are going to take advantage of it, you should probably spring for the whole package. The Traffic Plus feature is a great app to have and gives key information on traffic as it is happening. This time of year presents some pretty incredible challenges on the road ways and every little bit of information that can be had is appreciated. To know that you have viable options before you get there may just save a few strands of hair from being pulled out of your head over the next few weeks. The sale from Navigon is both smart and aggressive. The new TomTom update has been getting a lot of press and while the new features of the upgrade were enough to get people curious, the price tag of $99 may have kept a few people in the lurches looking for something better. The $69.99 price tag is probably low enough to convert curiosity into a Read More

DOOM Classic

| $2.99 | id Software
The timing was perfect as the long awaited DOOM title has finally been released. Those of you that were lucky enough to get it when it first hit the market were treated to a great Halloween weekend of one of the most anticipated titles yet for the iPhone games applications. For only $6.99, you are getting a lot of entertainment for your dollar. The 3 original episodes of DOOM are all included and they have added an original 4th episode, Thy Flesh Consumed. First person shooter games are always a blast to get through and with 36 challenging levels, this one is going to keep you busy on the train ride into work for quite some time. It should only be a matter of time before DOOM 2 finds its way onto the apps page and after working the bugs out on this one, it should only get better. Marvel has also announced that they are jumping in with both feet and plan on releasing several comic book series’ that will be available for direct purchase on the iPhone. This will now put the iPhone in the electronic book category as this application allows you to avoid the lines at the local newsstand or collectors stores in order to be able to enjoy your latest edition of the Marvel library. It will be very interesting to see how this plays out in the very near future as the iPhone is jumping into some very different markets with these applications. While the Kindle Reader is already facing a lot of direct competition and scrutiny, this is only going to make matters worse for it. We all know that Apple jumps in hard with both feet and when they do something, they do it right. It is pretty safe to assume that if Read More

Historic Earth

| $5.99 | Historic Map Works, LLC
Historic Earth is a mapping app that permits you to overlay historic maps on modern maps, which can make for fascinating study and underscores one of the ways the iPhone can be a great research tool and school aid. It claims one of the largest collections of geo-coded maps of any app anywhere. Historic Earth allows you to detail your current location, view locations features or search for a specific location as well, making it flexible and easy to use, and you can compare the two maps, both current and historical from any date from the 1700′s to the late 1900′s. You have full pan, scroll and zoom capabilities. Currently, the 32,000 map database includes maps for the Midwest, Washington State, Florida, California, Alabama, New York, Maine and Washinton DC. Maps are added all the time, so eventually it’ll have all of the US in there. This one is $5.99 in the App Store, and is worth a look if you’re a geography buff. NASA app for iPhone

| FREE | NASA
NASA, the US spec agency dedicated to the exploration of space, has announced the release of an iPhone application available for free download right now. The app enables people to be updated to the very latest in NASA happenings, including real-time updates of orbit locations of NASA spacecraft in real-time (sounds like something a spy could definitely use to his advantage, now that we think about it). More from the listing for the app: — The NASA software makes extensive use of built-in iPhone features and usability to offer compelling yet concise information in a clear and intuitive way. Receive and share dynamic NASA mission updates, out-of-this-world images, and intriguing video links. Follow the path and progress of space exploration in real time while tracking the global orbits of your favorite spacecraft, all in the palm of your hand. — We’re fascinated by the new usage of the iPhone for information gathering and data presentation, especially for free. Hopefully, more government agencies (with something interesting to present) follow suit with this sort of app execution. ReelDirector

| $7.99 | Nexvio Inc.
Yes, the 3GS does include basic editing tools, but very basic, and no effects at all (stitching, etc). Now that all changes with the release of ReelDirector for the iPhone. Nexvio’s iPhone app makes up for Apple’s omissions by adding in the ability to add titles, basic video effects and, most importantly, clip stitching as well. Simple and easy to use as well, according to the company. Now bear in mind: this is not a Final Cut Pro type interface or anything. It isn’t anything earth-shattering, according to comments on various blogs. Many are pretty much saying its ‘iMovie’ with a very slick front end, which is still an improvement over the default movie editor included with the 3GS. Now watch: There will be avalanche of “made and edited on the iPhone” videos to flood YouTube and other such venues. The app will run you $7.99 in the App Store right now. WolframAlpha

| $1.99 | Wolfram Alpha LLC
WolframAlpha, the well-chronicled online computational engine that can dig up all kinds of knowledge and was originally launched in May of this year, now has an iPhone app available in the App Store. The App Store description states that it “plugs directly into Wolfram Alpha’s supercomputing cloud to deliver the unrivaled power of the Wolfram|Alpha knowledge engine to the mobile environment.” It does need to be online to work, but conveniently it includes a special keyboard to make the entry of characters for mathematical and other functions very easy, welcomed by many who would use it, more than likely. Sources are saying that the app makes all output show well on the iPhone and that searches can be bookmarked and published via Twitter if you wish, making it flexible for a variety of uses. The site itself is free to access, but the app will run you $49.99 (probably aimed at power users who access this stuff all the time), interestingly enough. AMP UP Before Your Score

| FREE | Pepsico, inc.
Even Pepsi isn’t immune to PR goofups, such as the tasteless and pointless “Amp Up before you score” app they recently released, which struck a sour note for some users. That prompted a rather insincere apology from Pepsi, published on Twitter: — Our app tried 2 show the humorous lengths guys go 2 pick up women. We apologize if it’s in bad taste & appreciate your feedback. — In other words: yeah, yeah, if you don’t like it, don’t download it, more or less. The app itself: pickup lines that are supposed to work on various types of women. Yep, that’s the whole purpose of the app, and it ignores the rather obvious tip of “don’t glance at your iPhone constantly while trying to pick up women”. It isn’t that we’re so sensitive, its just curious that a large company like Pepsi would green light a silly, borderline sexist and absurd app like this one with its name on it. We’ll be interested in the uproar increases if it issues an actual apology, not a half-hearted text message that sounds like a 13 year old wrote it.
