45 Applications That Will Be On My iPhone Next Year
Calendar16 Thu, 31 Dec 2009 16:00:58 UTC +00:00
A couple weeks ago I wrote about the top 40 iPhone apps of 2009 in the App Store. This article got quite a bit of success (especially on Twitter) and a few of you asked me what where my favorite iPhone apps of 2009. I’ve had many apps come and go this year so I guess the best way to tell what my favorites are is to tell you the one I will keep with me for next year. Facebook – Need I say more? Indispensable if you have a Facebook account (note: you may want to join our Facebook page). Flight Control – My favorite iPhone game. Ever! It’s fun and addicting. My best score is 357 planes landed. Can you do better? Bejeweled 2 – My fiancée turned me on this game. I used to play it a lot but I got over it. Tap Tap Revenge 3 – Read More

App Review: iXpenseit Expense Tracker for iPhone
Calendar16 Sun, 15 Nov 2009 19:44:59 UTC +00:00
By Chris Vitek, Sunday, Nov 15, 2009 | ) iXpenseit [$4.99 - iTunes link] for iPhone and iPod touch is a budget tracking app that has recently appeared on the iPhone commercials. It allows a user to track monthly and daily spending, breaking items down into categories, as well as allowing the user to see overall spending. You start the app by entering various budget amounts for different categories. The default allows for a $1,000 monthly budget for all spending. You can also break down the budget into different categories: $200 for food, $50 for entertainment, $100 for auto, etc. This allows you to track overall spending as well as spending within each of the categories. (Interestingly, they have a specific budget for iTunes!!) Once you have the budget set, you then simply start by inputting an entry everytime you spend some money. Went to the movies? Put it $10 for Read More
Three New App-Loaded iPhone Ads Hit Prime Time

It’s fall premiere season, and that means new shows. But it also means sparkly new ads to fill all those commercial breaks. New Apple ads for the iPhone provided pleasant relief for me yesterday from the tedium of the two-hour Heroes premiere. On a side note, the Castle premiere was pretty good. But back to those commercials. All three highlight popular and unique iPhone apps, some of which have already been featured in previous commercials. Let’s take a look at the apps featured in each commercial. The first ad is called Dine and features a smattering of apps covering a range of different topics, including travel, dining, working and shopping. Here’s a breakdown of the apps featured. TripCase (Free) — Flight tracking, info and travel itinerary management app. Quite a few not so great reviews on this one, but it is free. New York Subway 09 ($4.99) — Navigate the labyrinth Read More
Were you watching the two-hour season premiere of House last night on Fox? Maybe you were watching one of the other prime-time shows, but if you had your eyes on the screen during some of the commercial breaks, you probably saw at least one of the three new iPhone ads that hit the airwaves last night. Each of the new ads highlights a total of six apps, up from the three that were formerly the focus of the older ads. The first ad I saw last night, "Dine," looks at Zagat to Go, QuickOffice, TripCase, New York Subway 09, Epicurious Recipes & Shopping List, and Gap Style Mixer. [Note: all app links will open the iTunes App Store] I'm happy to see that Apple is maintaining focus on the number and variety of apps in the App Store, instead of resorting to the narcissistic, touchy-feely, celebrity-filled tripe that T-Mobile has been Read More

Reviews

Love this app, can't wait for an update (I hope)
SmartriX 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
I am loving this application, presentation is nice and feels like a built in app, the ease of input and multiple ways to view your spending is awesome; however I do have a few gripes that I hope could be fixed in an update.
Great presentation, very useful app, but missing some core features
jakegnyc 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
This app is definately a winner, and is the best I could find for managing my expenses on the go. It is very well designed and looks like a native app. However, there are some core features that seriously need work asap:
Good App, But...
Bottlelot 2.0 stars Version: 1.0
Doesn't have any input for money coming in.
Dead end app
MobileAppMan 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
Neat idea to capture receipts via picture, but once your data is entered, there is no way to get it out! Export sends a CSV file embedded in an email (yuk!) and does not include the images. There is no way to print or export a report and there is no way to submit expenses to your boss or employer. No one could use this app successfully in any business venture.
Underpowered for business
Popperdave 2.0 stars Version: 1.0
Excited by ads, but too light weight for professional use. Inability to set up enough categories, e.g., can only specify "travel" -- there is no category for hotel, airlines, car rental, etc. No output to preformatted templates. Basically, it will not do a real expense report. Too bad, the camera capture of receipts is cool.
Pleased
Gotsven 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
I couldn't decide between this app or the budget app. I decided to buy both to demo each one and see which one was going to be a better fit. This app was the one I picked because I was abele to customize and graph my expenses the way I wanted. This app also has more funtionality too such as camera usage and exporting results. Free updates was also another good perk.
Great expense tracker
Rick Blalock 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
This is the one I was looking for. Ability to create your categories, take pics of receipts and generate reports on the go! Great job! Next feature needs to be nested categories.
Excellent app, cust service; report needed
Bifocal Man 5.0 stars Version: 1.1
Excellent customer service and support to go along with the best iPhone app! My questions have been answered promptly by competent, caring support staff. The program is helping me to get a handle on my family's expenses. Easy to use in the stores where you spend the money, and excellent export feature to backup in Excel on your desktop at home. Please add a report summary for payment method (cash, credit, debit...). Then it would be even better.
For me it gets it right
Riled 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
This is an excellent program that gets the right balance between functionality and complexity--it gets the job done without being overly complex. It is well worth the money. There may be some more involved things that it doesn't do, but then that means that you are also more involved. I personally don't want to spend more time doing my expense report just so I can have a prettier pie chart on my computer, and as the saying goes: "A picture is worth a thousand words."
Fantastic!
TreoRenegade 5.0 stars Version: 1.1
I don't know which impresses me more: the fact that this a business app truly worthy of the name; the profound responsiveness of the development team to customer requests/concerns; the take-a-pic-of-the-receipt feature; the flash presentation at the site to break down main features so I know what's up BEFORE I buy; or the fact that it just works, smoothly and wonderfully. In any event, while it's a darn good app now, the features soon to be added (export to csv, mileage tracking component, and more) makes me downright giddy. I LOVE these folks!
Best Travel Expense App Yet! (Updated 8/25/08)
Digital Dude1 5.0 stars Version: 1.2
Ok, since I can’t give it more than 5-Stars, I suppose it’s time to ask for something big! How about a built-in currency converter for us international travelers? It’s a real pain to first use a converter App and then load the adjusted US~$ value into iXenpensIt. Yeah I know that’s a big to-do although it would really be a useable feature even if it were only updated once a day or so. On the more frivolous and easier side, how about some enhanced 3D bar/pie charts?
Great Program Worth The Price
mwarren 5.0 stars Version: 1.1
I have been using the program all week and I already rethought my budget or more like my budget restraints. Highly Recommend!
Where did my receipts go?
bilbrey.j.m. 2.0 stars Version: 1.0
Easy enough to customize the categories for whatever you need. Easy to record. Keeps a nice list of your expenses. The export via email to an csv/excel file is fine; just set up your template and import into that template.
Excellent Application
jtrainornyc 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
I have purchased several budgeting applications already and this one is the best. I hope that subcategories will appear in a futrure update. Love the ability to take a photo. (Very clever) Nice job.
Thoughtful app
JeremyLz 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
I found this app to be one of the thoughtful ones. My favorite features are the customizable defaults and the capability to add/remove Types, Categories etc. to make it relevant to me.
Civil Supv
Greenre4 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Great application for us guys that travel on the road working in the construction field!!! It's simple and easy to use, PLUS, you can export your info via email!
Great program
Vastus 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
Pro: Love the clean way new entries can be input and the graphical summaries.
Winner!
DJM08 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Very easy to use. The most customerizable amongst the expense apps. I can track my personal expenses, as well as business expenses. Subcategories would be nice, but guess I can do without for now by adding my own categories. Love the camera capture receipts feature.
Suggestions
BC0407 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
I'm a huge fan of the app but I really wish I could delete the pre-set categories. It's so much easier to name my own and I'd rather not have to wade through so many to get to the only one's I'm really going to be using.
Great Application
WJMIII 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
I thought the application was very easy to incorporate into your everyday life to keep track of expenses. I am already seeing that I am spending too much on coffee at lunch. Very easy to use. Hopefully, it will have a "how much do I have to spend on coffee this month" budget feature with an update.
Excellent
CollateralDmg 5.0 stars Version: 1.1
A great app. Full featured, easy to use
Great app and developer
parkstech 5.0 stars Version: 1.2
This app is great! I really like that it is very quick. You don't have to manually type in anything except for the price. Of course you have to type in the vendor if you want to add that field, but once you type "Target" once, it is always there. The graphs are great too! It gives you a quick rundown on all your spending. The reason I bought this app was becasue of the developer. I always read the reviews and look for requests. Then, if there is already an update, I read what was updated. The developer added almost all the requested features in just one update! He/she is paying attention to what everybody wants. Very very good!
The best so far.
doneckert 5.0 stars Version: 1.1
I bought a few and ended up stay with the funny named IXpenselt. Its easy and gives u a nice visual with your $.
Best Expense app in the App store.
Fever Pitch 5.0 stars Version: 1.2
This App was good before the updates, now with the updates, iXpenseit is great.
Good, but could be better
mmjm 4.0 stars Version: 1.1
Overall, a very good application. Category file is way too big, need to have capability to delete this file to make it more managable. Food selection is not as intuitive as it could be.
sorry, but I am disappointed
Michael Lechar 1.0 stars Version: 2.5
I bought this app because of the numerous positive testimonials on the right, but WAY it is FAR not so good. I am sorry, developers, but it makes no sense in making an app that ONLY counts expenses. Where is the planning possibility? Where is the INCOME possibility? It very much looks like I am just here to spend something, and does not help me a bit to plan anything. I am very frustrated, and just lost 5 dollars for this app that works like an extended notepad. And now, when can I expect an update, which can give me all the missing features? I am very disappointed. Gonna try something else, hope it won't be SO elementary. One more time when I say to myself: do NOT buy anything without testing it. :(
what's changed?
jdizzlejd 2.0 stars Version: 2.5
I like the program OK... not great but it helps somewhat. But my question is what changed with the update that I just downloaded? The program looks entirely the same. Would love to know details. Thanks.
Not so great for running balance
Rio's Apple 2.0 stars Version: 1.0
Great expense tracker, but doesn't track running balance of your account. In fact, there's no way you can track deposit.
Great APP! One Small Problem. I want to record what I plan to spend each month also.
bj85happybuyer 4.0 stars Version: 2.5.3
This is a great app. The one thing I would like to see added is an optional monthly planned budget distribution. What I mean by this is a budget that does not have you put in what you spend each day or even record what exactly it was. I mean a simple budget sheet where I can state what I plan to spend in each category. Like I give myself a thirty dollar a week entertainment budget. So I guess what I am saying is a budget of what I plan to spend not the actual events. It would just have to be simple even, but it would add so much.
Great Tool for Travel!
NeverLuvAnEditor 5.0 stars Version: 2.5.2
Just got back from a business trip to China and Taiwan. Between the simple currency conversion, fast input and editable features. this is THE app to have for travel. Was able to spit out an expense report in seconds. Absolutely perfect for my needs AND the support is super!
OK App except..
Re/install People 3.0 stars Version: 4.9
The app itself is great. The developers should consider including in all the reports instead of charging you for this critical feature for .99cents each. What's up with that?? I paid $4.99 for an app that i expect to have all the features/reports included, only to find out i have to open my pocketbook yet again..Nice..Real nice..
Hard as heck
Princessannie021602 1.0 stars Version: 4.9
It seriously takes a genius to figure out how the heck to work it. Don't waste your money they don't offer much help and it is seriously the biggest waste of money I have spent on an app!
Don't waste your money.
Furulo 1.0 stars Version: 4.9
This app reminds me of MS Word: it has a lot of features that I don't need. Configuration is complicated and poor. You will need to spend more money to buy "templates" if you want to export the picture of the receipts to a PDF.So you will end up spending more money that the original cost of the app. I wish they would return my money.Don't buy this app.
Great idea but a no go for now.
jjachura 1.0 stars Version: 4.9
This app rocks. Very good for only one device. Due to the fact that iCloud isn't even an option yet? It's in hold. For month's, support states they are coming with it soon. Still nothing. Unfortunately I have lost my tracking trying to sync to my wife's iPad through email. The lay out of the app is awesome but for those with multiple devices. I don't recommend it.
Two words...
Robert Antonelli 3.0 stars Version: 4.9
iCloud sync. Nothing should be this complicated when it comes to backing up sensitive data like this. I use this app to file my income taxes and I would feel so much more confident in the backup/restore feature if it would use iCloud. Plus why not make the app one of those apps like pages, keynote, GarageBand, etc that when plugged into the computer you can remove and drop in the backup files? Just a thought. Either way with the latter, iCloud syncing is a must have feature.
Worst cashflow and expeses report program ever
JustDiveIt 1.0 stars Version: 4.9
The expenses configuration is poor and complicated. Idem for revenue. Some basic concepts such as recursive expenses are not intuitive.Expenses reports are poor and useless!Wasted my money on this!
Unusable.
yogaDave 1.0 stars Version: 4.9
Something's wrong: cannot make an entry in an account; cannot bring up a newly created account. Not user friendly. Have had an iPhone since 2007, this is the most impossible app I've tried. Good luck.
I absolutely DESPISE this program...
Bobaloo 2010 1.0 stars Version: 4.9
I made the mistake of believing that many positive reviews meant that this program would work well for me. Does anybody in the "real world" actually care about VAT when they want to track basic income and expenses to try to get a "handle" on where their money goes so they have a starting point for setting up a budget? I am guessing that overpowering silence means extensive and unnecessary feature list ("featuritis") plus non-existent owner's manual equals ANNOYED (and non-repeat) CUSTOMERS. I think this app/program is a perfect example of what is wrong with so much software today!Bob Abner
Fails to warn loss of data on updates
Paulnps 2.0 stars Version: 4.9
I really like this app but when it dies a major update it wipes out all your data and history! No Warning! All one's hours of work gone! I lost 6 months of daily data and a tech support could say was sorry. I have to wait till Jan 2012 to make this app useful again. How about integration with ICloud tech support?!
Don't buy
Jennbeth01 1.0 stars Version: 4.9
The free mint app is so much better. I wish I had not wasted money on this.
