Games based on comic books have been almost as hit or miss as games based on movies in the past, so I think my cautious optimism for Gameloft's recently released Spider-Man: Total Mayhem [$6.99] was well deserved. Sure, there are some absolutely fantastic comic book games such as the quarter-sucking X-Men Arcade Game, and a few others over the years. Unfortunately, many fall in to the same pit that movie games fall in to where they lean far too heavily on whatever intellectual property the game is based on instead of actually having good gameplay. This is true to some extent in Spider-Man: Total Mayhem, but the whole package is comprehensive enough that it doesn't even seem to even matter. Parked outside the west hall of E3 this year was a black party bus covered in Gameloft logos and graphics from their latest games. Inside they walked us through a few games that are nearing release, and a few others that are coming soon. The star of the show was Ultimate Spiderman Total Mayhem, a 3D beat 'em up obviously based in the Spider Man universe with an art style straight out of the Spider Man comic books. Available sometime towards the end of this summer, Ultimate Spiderman is controlled like all third person Gameloft games, with a virtual joystick that controls your movement and a set of buttons that handle your punching, web slinging, jumping, and other actions. Microsoft’s Major Nelson earlier reported that the patch for Modern Warfare 2 on Xbox 360 to fix a few prominent glitches was good to go, and indeed it has now been released. The 1.06 upgrade for Modern Warfare 2 on Xbox 360 fixes the ever annoying Javelin glitch, as well as the unlimited care packages glitch. Microsoft had been banning Xbox Live accounts caught using the glitch, no word if those will remain banned, but for now the bannings will cease. Both glitches effected online multiplayer on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Avatar was destined to be a blockbuster movie with millions of dollars put into its production. And as everyone knows, with a blockbuster movie, comes the game. Avatar the game is put out by Gameloft, one of the most respectable companies in the iPhone gaming business. This game follows the story of a new Avatar program recruit and his journey through the new world. The events in the game take place before the actual movie and allow for the game to have its own story. The game plays much like the Assassin's Creed app if any of you are familiar with it. This movie’s being touted to be a graphical and technological masterpiece, but does the iPhone game counterpart let the movie down?
