Ten things I want Siri to be able to do for me
Calendar16 Mon, 17 Oct 2011 00:30:00 UTC +00:00
Now that I've had my iPhone 4S for a couple of days, I'm amazed with what Siri can do. I've asked a number of questions -- real ones, not questions like "What is the meaning of life?" -- and have been totally impressed with how my interaction with the iPhone has changed. But there are more things I'd love to be able to do with Siri, which is the reason for this post. Everyone should understand that Siri is currently a beta product from Apple. A lot of the things I'm talking about here should happen once the product is out of beta and developers are given access to a Siri API. This is my way of letting some iOS developers know that I'd love to see Siri integration in their apps. Here we go: I think that Siri has the ability to become the intelligent agent that the mid-90s MagicCap Read More

Posted 08/11/2011 at 1:21pm | by Nik Rawlinson and Susie Ochs Believe J.J. Cale, because he knows what he’s talking about: traveling light is the only way to fly. The next time you’re tempted to overpack, remember to take half as many clothes, twice as much money, and your iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch. An iOS device can replace paper maps, books, and travel guides; and the information you’ll find in apps and iBooks is more timely and relevant anyway. Obviously you won’t need CDs or a portable DVD player -- or pricey hotel or in-flight pay-per-view -- to stay entertained. And by posting photos or blog updates about your vacation online, you won’t even have to send postcards. To prepare you and your electronic travel buddy to hit the road, we found the best apps, gear, and know-how to keep you connected. Travel can be tough on your iPad or Read More
It’s no secret that smartphones make travel much less painful and way more fun–from reducing our chances of getting hopelessly lost to helping us find an ATM or even update Twitter in-flight. More and more travelers already pack them along on their work and business trips, and we have a pretty good idea of what devices they’re carrying, too. Gogo, which provides in-flight Wi-Fi for eight major North American airlines, revealed Tuesday that 65 percent of those using Gogo to log on to the web mid-flight do so with an iPhone and 15 percent with an iPod touch. By contrast, 12 percent of Gogo use is by Android device users, and 6 percent by BlackBerry owners. I’m one of those people who keeps my iPhone close at hand when I travel. A smartphone is a powerful tool you should use on every trip, if nothing to save some cash along the way. In addition to the must-have navigation apps and local guides from the likes of Lonely Planet, there are other applications that could help you save money while travelling. Here are the apps we suggest you to try out on your next trip: Groupon You’ve probably heard about Groupon and may have also used it. The daily deals service is getting more and more users every day, despite facing a tough competition from the likes of Facebook and Google, with Nokia and Microsoft planning to join the race, too. Their mobile application is available for multiple platforms, including iOS, Android, BlackBerry, and they also have a mobile website for users of other mobile devices. Using smartphone for travel

A smartphone is a great companion for every trip. There are a number of apps that can make your travel easier, whether it’s about finding a place to stay, monuments and historical sights to see, or learning more about the city/place you’re visiting… there’s (usually) an app for that. Here are some apps I’ve found useful in my travels. Please note that I’m linking to iOS apps and that not all of them are available on other platforms. The point is to get the idea which apps to use for what purpose, to better plan and ultimately enjoy your trip. Let’s start with the flight search… Flight search Pretty much every major airline now has its iPhone app. Moreover, some companies support Android and BlackBerry whereas some others are experimenting with newer platforms like Windows Phone 7. If you live near a major airport, you should grab the app of the Read More

Kayak's business model upended by iPhone
Calendar16 Mon, 14 Dec 2009 21:00:00 UTC +00:00
Developers are learning that iPhone users want sophistication and features in their apps, not watered-down functionality. A report in GigaOM shows that not only are companies finding that slimmer isn't better when it comes to apps, but that one company is actually changing their business model based on what they found out about how iPhone users were using their app. Travel search service Kayak based its first iPhone offering on the assumption that a mobile user would most likely use the app if her flight had been canceled and she needed a replacement reservation. As a result, the initial app didn't have features like flexible date search. While the Kayak app [free, iTunes link] was very successful for the company, with over 600,000 downloads since February now accounting for 5% of Kayak's search volume, users demanded the full functionality that they found on the company's website. Kayak went back to the Read More
Pack Your Bags, Kayak for iPhone Just Got Better
Calendar16 Thu, 10 Dec 2009 07:06:08 UTC +00:00
Admit it, everyone knows someone that’s addicted to Kayak. You know the type – always checking Kayak for random good deals on flights, spending more time overseas than you have in vacation time, and a well-worn passport filled with customs stamps. Next time you see this person, do them a favor and show them Kayak’s new iPhone app. It’s faster and easier to use than the original app and packs most of Kayak’s best online features into a handy package. For most people, the free Kayak iPhone app will suffice. The premium version of the app costs $3.99 on the AppStore and allows you to search for business and first class flights. Or, as Kayak puts it, if “you fly first class and business class. You are really rich. It’s 4 lousy bucks. Seriously, come on.” Kayak (FREE) [iTunes link] Kayak First Class ($3.99) [iTunes link] Will hails from The City Read More
17 Best iPhone Hidden Gems From Five Months Of Searching
Calendar16 Thu, 24 Sep 2009 15:21:26 UTC +00:00
In my Hidden Gem App column I’ve delivered more than 70 apps in the last five months and tested countless more that never made the cut. In that time we’ve gone through a site change from www.appleiphoneapps.com to www.appadvice.com and a complete redesign of our Web site, so I’m sure you’ve missed out on some if not most of my hidden gems columns. In any case, this is the column to start with or catch up on because I’m delivering to you today the best of the best. For the record, here’s the list of every app appearing in hidden gems: Sudoku Grab, GPush, Kayak, Simplify Music 2, Simplenote, Mover+ and Mover, Newsstand, Face The Music, Facehack, Dial Zero, Dictionary.com, vSNAX, Peephole, The Moron Test, Read It Later Pro and Read It Later Lite, Pocket Tanks Deluxe and Pocket Tanks Free, Cooliris, Blackjack Live, Flight Control, Leaf Trombone: World Stage, Touch Read More
The apps this week are among the most impressive apps I’ve seen for iPhone. I finally took the dive and bought GPush – an app which sends Push Notifications the second you receive a new message to your Gmail. First of all, it works. Second of all, you probably need it. I have a lot of email accounts, including Yahoo, MobileMe and Gmail. I use each of them differently. MobileMe is the address I give out to business contacts, Yahoo is the one I use to sign up for anything and Gmail handles everything else, including the bulk of my personal emails. When I installed GPush and received my first Push Gmail message, something dawned on me. I’ve been using my Gmail account far less than I should specifically because the messages are delayed by 15 minutes. Yahoo and MobileMe messages are pushed to your iPhone instantly while Gmail is checked Read More

Very clean and easily usable. Exactly what I would expect from kayak. I imagine it will be very helpful when flights get cancelled.
I love this app
Army Drummer 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
I've used the site several times for comparison shopping on flights, an this was a great find in the App store. The best feature by far is the ability to look up trends to see what prices on a given flight have been like! Gives information for all major carriers and the ability to book a flight from your iPhone is a time saver! Awesome app!
fast and simple!
englishpaulm 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
The Kayak iTunes application is a very quick way to find flights and hotels!
Fix the app
RJ-SF 2.0 stars Version: 1.1
I made site I increased my memory using "free memory" before using this app. based on the reviews I read. I even sit down the phone. Fix the app. This should not have been released. The Brand Mamager at Kayak should be cringing as this does not bode well for the brand experience. It crashed three times when itried to search for airports. Then it kept crashing once I found my flight and was tryi g to get more info. I actually need to book a flight and thought I'd try the app. Oh well. Hate to say it, but it is no good. Completely unuseable on my 2nd 3G gen 16 gig iPhone.
Best travel site out there!
Sfttguy 5.0 stars Version: 1.1
Great extension of what they already have on the web! Kayak rocks!
I've been waiting!

Great!
Vtgal804 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
I love Kayak's website. This is just the app I was looking for! I only wish it had the flexible dates search (maybe I didn't see it). I love it!
Love this
Drfp 5.0 stars Version: 1.1
I have used kayak for years awesome because it searches a lot of other sites for low fares
More features needed
SteelBus#36 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
A map function while viewing hotels needed. Ability to filter by price range needed.
No Internet conection?
chinito.com 1.0 stars Version: 1.1
Love Kayak on my Desktop, but hate it on iPhone. What's good an awesome search engine such as this if it keeps displaying "no internet conection available" when in fact there is? You had good intentions, but is not worth the effort.
Kayak Unstable
SDSO 1.0 stars Version: 1.1
Kayak constantly crashes and is therefore unusable at all. This is total junk. Kayak needs to have their heads examined to put out a piece of junk as this. Stick with their full web presence, which is an awesome tool.
Annoying
Sjfll 1.0 stars Version: 1.1
Crashes all the time!!!
Brown Shady
Brown Shady 5.0 stars Version: 1.1
I guess I am the minority, but it works great for me. I do agree there should be more options like business or first class.
Poor effort

Poor programming

Unusable, crashes 9 times out of 10, needs much improvement.
Yarg! Avoid at all costs!
Screetched 1.0 stars Version: 1.1
Mayhaps this app was written with good faith, but seemingly it was by a blarmy tosspot! Praytell, why does thee app crash so idlely? I say to thee now: Fix thine app, and thou shalt be redeemed of thyself!
Like Kayak, but app crashes
Nuanaarpuq 2.0 stars Version: 1.1
Crashes every single time I try to use the "filter flights" screen. Love Kayak, but the app needs some love before I will reinstall it on my iPhone.
It works!
pSilent 4.0 stars Version: 1.1
A couple times of listed flights and when I selected one and the "no flights found" screen came up, so I searched again and it worked. Good app! Thanks!
Great app!!
HawaiianJosh 5.0 stars Version: 1.1
Quick and easy!! This is exactly what I've been looking for in a travel app
Crashes
AdamSmith1776 1.0 stars Version: 1.1
When it works, I love it, but it rarely works! I finally deleted it because it was caught on a screen that I couldn't leave without a crash. I'm a software developer and can't imagine releasing such an embarassingly buggy app.
Works as promised
Divamac 4.0 stars Version: 1.1
I have had no problems with Kayak. It is stable for me, even sorting. I would like options for first class.
Unuseable- 0 stars
Jfree2065 1.0 stars Version: 1.1
I use kayak.com all the time, but this application is basically unusuable. Way too many bugs, what a shame. I hope they fix it soon.
They fixed the bug that says, "No connection"
Bert S. 5.0 stars Version: 1.1
There was a bug. They fixed it. It now works like a charm. Uninstall your copy, reinstall it, and Bob's your uncle.
Does not work!!!
Jeff-Irvine 1.0 stars Version: 1.1
I use Kayak on a regular basis, but only from my computer because the iPhone version does NOT work. Very disapointing!!!
Great App if it worked right
Kroesakian 1.0 stars Version: 1.1
Keeps telling me that I don't have a network connection. But alas, I do. I do!
Use the website, not the app
RukabJax 1.0 stars Version: 1.1
Crashes alot, very unfortunate.
I love kayak
Warsea 2.0 stars Version: 1.1
But this app version needs serious work.
Buggy
dubs75 1.0 stars Version: 1.1
Great concept. Poor execution. Consistently crashes and fails to recognize wifi connection.
Works fine
LukaSarp07 5.0 stars Version: 1.1
For those of you who reported crashing problem , make sure you restart your iphone often. I have used this app and works great so far.
Frustating
Ocortess 1.0 stars Version: 1.1
Just when I thougth I had a way to search for flight on my Iphone I realized that this app does not work at all It worked once and since then it keeps saying that there is no Internet connection. Isn't that something basic in iPhone apps?
Not worth It, wait for next update
Dubkeith 1.0 stars Version: 1.1
Works, at times then crashes the rest of the time. Great concept app not really that functional.
Removed off my phone :(
Blackant0007 1.0 stars Version: 1.1
Love the concept but this app is not up to the Kayak name/website. Wish it was. Removed from my phone until they work out the significant kinks.
Love it, but hate it
Chef1975 1.0 stars Version: 1.1
Kayak in general is fantastic, however this app leaves much to be desired. It crashes often and when it does "work" it regularly says that there are no flights found, when there are plenty. It could be great, but needs some tweaking.
The trend feature shows you when the cheapest flights are
mepilot1 5.0 stars Version: 1.1
Best travel prices app so far!
Crash
Nukote 1.0 stars Version: 1.1
App crashes most of the time. Filters don't respond to touch and the saved results don't refresh and saved data is incorrect. Purchased iFare Finder to find flghts and that app works great. Well worth the price!
Need to filter by departure time
BDC123 3.0 stars Version: 1.1
Big negative: no filter/search by departure time.
Crash problems
galen86 1.0 stars Version: 1.1
Crashes all the time. Better to just stick to the kayak mobile site.
Needs an upddate (desperately!!)
absolutecookfan1 1.0 stars Version: 1.1
I typed in a popular airport and it came up with "no results!"
Good App!
H2olite 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
Fast working app. The site show amenaties of the hotels for quick reference. Would have given it 5 stars if the connection to safari links were active.
Love the Idea of the App, don't like how it doesn't work well...
nutsnbolts 3.0 stars Version: 1.1
I love kayak.com, unfortunately, the flight search doesn't work. Well, I think it works, but the rendering of listing the flights doesn't show up.
Still crashing
teknos 1.0 stars Version: 1.3
Still crashing even after update. Most unstable when trying to search flights.
Crash, iFare Finder much better
Nukote 1.0 stars Version: 1.3
App crashes most of the time. Filters don't respond to touch and the saved results don't refresh and saved data is incorrect. Purchased iFare Finder to find flghts and that app works great. Well worth the price! Don't waste the time on this one!
Very goof on the go!!
mpa2 4.0 stars Version: 1.5
It's not as developed and extended as the web-based service, but considering that we're on ver 1.5--it's pretty good and eventually will get there after a while. Kayak is one the greatest service online!!!
Fun but crashy
Tdfjiojegoyfhiuffdfjjdghhdfg 3.0 stars Version: 1.5
Finding trends in pricing is very cool. Fix the crashing bugs and it is easily 4 stars
Unstable with recent update...
chknise 2.0 stars Version: 1.5
With recent update very unstable & crashes! I've uninstalled & reinstalled with no luck.
Great app!
Faisal Laljee 5.0 stars Version: 1.1
I am not sure why this app does not have a higher rating. It does exacty what it is supposed to. It finds you the cheapest airfares and let's you click off to the merchants site for purchase. I love it!
Crashing after simple flight search
LatteNut 1.0 stars Version: 1.5.1
All I did was open app and searched for flights BUR to BWI. Saw AA flights then United as search progressed. Once it reached the end of search, all results disappeared and said no flights found. Huh??? Waste of time.
Easier and Quicker than my MAC
MacJoeS 4.0 stars Version: 1.3
Indeed sometimes this app will hang or crash... but mostly when its having trouble getting to the NET. However, it is so easy and quick to use that I can actually find stuff quicker than going to my MAC and using the WEB site. Coupled with the fact that Kayak is absolutely the best flight and hotel search engine and its hard to fault this app.
Fantastic
Alex5621 5.0 stars Version: 1.1
I'm useing the 3.0 beta 5 software and the app worked first time. Perfectly. It worked as well as the website. Showed results before the search was finished. Then finished and updated the results. Was about as fast as the site. But looked sleeker and cooler. This app is worth getting. These people with Internet problems are wrong. It worked perfectly for me. It's as good as the website. But made for your phone.
Improved!
RyanInPA 5.0 stars Version: 1.1
I revised my rating because the app hasn't crashed on me for awhile. Now it is absolutely a five star app!!
Great!
Gypsydoctor 5.0 stars Version: 1.5.2
Rebooted my phone and has not crashed since.
Great way to search for flights and hotels
TurtleCharmer 5.0 stars Version: 1.5.2
I searched for a flight and got hundreds of results very quickly. Then you can sort by price or departure time and filter out all but nonstop flights. You can search for hotels too. All I want now is a car search.
Handy, despite a bug or two
WhatTheDogSaid 3.0 stars Version: 1.6.1
Yes, it crashed once on me occasionally. And the filtered results showed entries in duration order but not in price order. (The blank headers do click through to full details, though!) But the kayak.com basic functionality is there. I'm sure there will be updates to fix the bugs. This makes this free application worth having. It will be the ultimate resource when it can do alternate airport searches and flexible dates, but not even the main website has that. A solid 3.
Great tool
concentriq 5.0 stars Version: 1.6.1
Fantastic application. Wonderful Implementation. Now that crash bug is fixed in v1.61. Highly recommend.
