Published: April 4, 2010 Comment         Binary Square is wrong, dead wrong. They consider that their new game Keplinkus is a casual puzzle game, but it is not. It has got the same intensity as Tetris, and to me that is some really hardcore gaming. At the same time it is still extremely attractive to the casual gamer. In Kerplinkus you are screwed right of the bat. You don’t think so of course, and that is the main draw of this game. Just like the aforementioned Tetris it fools me into thinking that I can keep the screen clean from all the rapidly falling blocks. Even on the easy difficulty level it makes life really hard. During last night's iPhone Developers Union party, here at GDC 2010, I had the chance to sit down with Dan Bliss of BinarySquare and have a look at his new, retro-styled block elimination title Kerplinkus [App Store]. Now, many of you out there are surely thinking you need to see another block elimination game like you need a hole in the head, but Dan has managed to deliver a fresh take on the formula that's simple and highly challenging -- in fact, it can be downright panic inspiring. It works like this: you start off with a playfield consisting of upwardly advancing rows of differing blocks. If you love playing casual puzzle games on your iPhone or iPod touch such as Bejewelled or Trism then Kerplinkus from BinarySquare is definitely worth taking a look at. Kerplinkus is a great new puzzle game with an 80′s retro arcade feel. The game seems a lot simpler to learn than others I have played because, on the surface it appears deceptively easy. You don’t have to match 3 in a row and you can swap any two pieces on the board with absolutely no movement restrictions, plus there are no special-blocks or killer pieces to contend with. So whats the catch? Well, with 8 columns to watch out for and the ever increasing speed the game is a real challenge and painfully addictive.
