Kanex ATV Pro connects Apple TV to VGA projectors
Calendar16 Thu, 10 May 2012 23:00:00 UTC +00:00
Kanex has just released the US$59 ATV Pro HDMI to VGA adapter. This little video adapter may well be a hit with teachers and presenters who want to mirror their iPad screens to VGA projectors -- without tethering the iPad to a clunky VGA cable. Up until now, if you intended to display your iPhone or iPad screen on a projector without HDMI inputs, your choices were few. First, you could use an Apple or third-party Dock connector to VGA cable. That, of course, limits your mobility to the length of the cable you're using to connect to the projector; the Apple VGA dongle is also prone to falling out if you're wandering around. Putting an Apple TV into the mix (and an accessible local WiFi network) lets you can leverage Apple's AirPlay mirroring, making it simple to send iPhone or iPad screens to a big screen with no cable clutter. Hopefully many of our favorite items will also be of interest to you. Please feel free to comment on our selections, and suggest picks of your own. Check out this week’s picks after the break. Espresso  [ v 2.0.1 ] My pick this week is Espresso, a web development tool from MacRabbit. I am currently enrolled in a web design class at my local university, and on occasion do paid web development. I’m not particularly great at it, and certainly can’t handle the more advanced Javascript functionality. However, I am pretty comfortable with HTML and CSS. That’s where Espresso shines, with tag highlighting, code Read More

Posted 08/12/2011 at 9:02am | by Cory Bohon iOS devices are great on their own, but if you're constantly using your Mac for work or other personal projects, you might feel like you're not fully utilizing your iPad and iPhone. With a few applications, however, you can transform your iPhone into a trackpad or your iPad into an external display and control desktop applications like Keynote and iTunes right from your mobile device. Read on to find out how. With an application called Air Display, you are no longer limited to your MacBook’s screen size while traveling or working. As long as you have an iPad, iPod touch, or iPhone, you can extend your Mac’s screen to these devices, giving you extra room to move windows around. Best of all, you can actually touch these windows on your iOS devices instead of having to use your mouse. To get started with Read More
Use Keynote Remote for iPhone to control Keynote on iPad
Calendar16 Wed, 08 Jun 2011 20:30:00 UTC +00:00
Here's a very welcome change to Keynote on iOS. The latest update lets you use the Keynote Remote app for iPhone as a remote for Keynote presentations on the iPad. Reader Andreas sent us a video of the two apps in action (which you can see below). Setup is simple; first launch the slideshow on the iPad and then the remote app on your iPhone. Add the iPad as a source and you're off! Of course, it's been possible to sit or stand next to an iPad running a slideshow and flip through it with your fingers. But many people like to get up and move around while they speak, and now the iPhone offers a way to do that. Good work, Apple! Thanks, Andreas. Read More

I've been waiting for the ability to share a Keynote presentation as an actual presentation on iWork.com, and it's finally here. In another update (yesterday brought iLife updates for iPhoto, iMovie and Garageband) squeaking in before the Mac App Store launch, Apple has released an update for iWork 9.0 and later as both a download and a software update. The release notes mention the usual miscellaneous bug fixes as well as some improvements: For more detailed information about this update and individual application changes, see Apple's iWork Update 5 knowledge base article. Very "simple" remote
kartchen 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
It does its job: remote control your keynote slides by going next/previous slides. Nothing more!!
Great, but how often do you have WiFi where presenting?
NZMatt 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
This is an obvious and a great app. However, I personally do all my presentations in conference facilities. I never bring my own WiFi, and what's available is usually some slow, pay-per-day, web-based log-in WiFi network. Will that really work, and how?
Not "Full" Featured as contrasted to Stage Hand
spratdog 2.0 stars Version: 1.0
Keynote Remote (KR)1.0 as contrasted with Stage Hand (SH) 1.5.0:
GOOD BUT NEEDS IMPROVEMENT
John Guo 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
This works really well. I can see myself giving the next presentation using my iPod touch. I do however thinks that the text size for notes are a bit small. I know that the iPhone/iPod touch has a limited viewing estate. If the font size can be make bigger to see easily, I don't have to stare at the iPod while giving a presentation (when I'm suppose to be making eye contact with the audience). The swipe to forward to the next slide is a nice touch. I initially thought that I might accidently forward to the next slide by accidently touching the screen but it never happened.
nice but...
grimmrad 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
...there are other ones out there (iPointer for example) which are as expensive/cheap but in addition time the presentation and let you point via your iPhone, simulating a laserpointer. If Apple were to implement that functionality as well I would give 5 stars, currently there are betterones out there.
pay to play
Ship O' Fools 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
overall rather well done, but I would have assumed that if you have own iwork, it should be free
Save your money for stage hand
TheMacFixr 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
I thought this would be sweet coming from Apple. I was wrong. It's a no frills remote that barely gets by. You even have to CHOOSE in the prefs to run in landscape mode, you can't just turn your iphone. I'll stick with StageHand thank you.
Clever and useful. Lacking a few key features and some flexibility...
Detroit Blair 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
So firstly it is a drag that this is only compatible with 09 - why not previous Keynotes? OK, though - gave me an excuse to trial 09. The app works fine - make sure you are not blocking incoming Keynote traffic if your firewall settings are tight. It performs as advertised. It's missing a way to black the screen during the presentation. It REALLY needs a way to black the screen. Hope to see this in an update. Would also be nice to have an option for slide transitions. Right now you can only swipe - often requiring two hands. Would be nice to have a button option for single hand, discreet transitions - forward, back, and black screen all at the bottom of the portrait view. I've tried two other remotes for Keynote on the phone and still haven't decided if I like the large size of the phone as a remote and the need to consider airplane mode so calls will not interrupt a presentation. An option to auto decline calls while using the remote would be great!
Works great and is quite impressive.
farrinbr 5.0 stars Version: 1.1
Downloaded the night before making a Keynote presentation in an interview. They were really impressed and it was so easy to do. Was able to connect to a Computer to Computer network I created, so while you need to do this over Wi-Fi, you don't need a hotspot.
This works really well... (One Suggestion)
TruthSeeker 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
Great controller. I'll be using this for a presentation this weekend! Several have mentioned that the processing time is a bit slow on the iPhone screen. It's actually not bad, about a second to a second and a half. Less time than most transitions... If you are flipping though your presentation, you might notice it, but in a real world scenario, your audience would get motion sickness if it went that fast. :::SUGGESTION::: If Apple Developers are reading, I think that a great addition would be the option to trigger a default black screen or to set a slide as a default logo screen that you could jump to during a protracted pause in your presentation and then jump back to your place in the presentation with another click. Basically a "pause" function that would dim away the current slide until you're ready to proceed. Please... this would be an incredible help.
Almost there.
Dannn. 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
Ok. This is a good app and very much needed since powerpoint has gotten so many applications running for it. However. I have two complaints. One. Portrait mode and landscape mode need to be able to jump back and forth without going into settings. Two. There needs to be a timer on there just like in Keynote Presenter on the Mac. Other than that, it's going to be a great tool to use for future presentations.
Stage Hand Still Better
HotFreaks 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
Mainly because of the pointer functionality that Keynote Remote lacks.
Simple to Setup and Easy to Use
Jeff Donald 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Apple has done a great job on a very simple and straight forward application. It's a great compliment to Keynote and untethers the presenter in most situations. The pairing process was almost too simple. Launch both apps, get on the same Wi-Fi network, enable remotes in Keynote Preferences, enter 4 digit code and your paired. The swipe to forward/reverse the slides works flawless. Presenter notes are small but can be read in different lighting conditions. I worked with it for 20 to 30 minutes preparing for a presentation and the only feature that was lacking was a remote view of the timer. The addition of this one feature would free the presenter from the podium and be a great addition for the next version of this already great app. Well worth the $.99 if you use Keynote on an almost daily basis as I do.
Very good, but Stagehand is still tops
Jonathan Nalder 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
Apple is a little late in the game with this Keynote control app. They have produced a very polished and intuitive app in keeping with their usual standards, and perhaps future versions will bring new features BUT 'Stagehand', tho more expensive is still easily worth it, with about 5 extra features such as controllable highlighter and skip to any slide. PLUS stagehand works with any version of keynote, not just the new one... (and no I don't work for Stagehand!)
Better and cheaper
Phronie 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
I downloaded the iWork 09 of trial version, and ran Keynote with this remote. This application is great. It controls the slides by swipe left or right. Of course, it can not show the animation of my slides.
Amazing!!!
Amaraptor 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
At first I was skeptical about this app.
Keynote's best friend.
App Store 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
A remarkable app selling at an outstanding, affordable price.
Needs a pointer function
Croppy Boy 4.0 stars Version: 1.1
Wireless control of progress through slideshow is fine and easy. However, the app would be much more valuable if it 1) incorporated a pointer and 2) allowed a light table view (about the size of regular app icons) on the iphone for rapidly selecting one particular slide from the whole show.
Excellent App! Everything it should be!
Hayden Evans 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
I bought this application immediately after seeing it, because I knew it would be great for presentations I have to do for my classes in college. After testing it out on a keynote I made, this application is absolutely perfect! It is straight forward, easy to set up, and the response time between the computer and the phone is immediate! Furthermore, the ability to view your speaking notes while giving the presentation is an absolute lifesaver. With this application, I can't express how much easier presenting will be! Worth every penny!
You don't need Wi-Fi to use this app!!
江戸川コナン (Edogawa Conan) 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
Even if there isn't any Wi-Fi where you are presenting, you can use this app! You can create a wireless network (Wi-Fi) on your Mac (password protected or not) that can be connected to by your iPhone or iPod Touch. All you need is a Mac and a wireless device that can connect to it, in this case: an iPhone/iPod Touch (no router required). Just click on the Airport item in the menu bar on your Mac and a window pops up, asking you to name it (by default, it's set to the name of your Mac), set a channel (or leave it on Automatic if you don't want to deal with that), require a password if you'd like (40-bit WEP or 128-bit), and click OK. After you connect to this network you've just created on your iPhone/iPod Touch, you're all set and ready to present! You have just created a wireless network that your iPhone/iPod Touch and your Mac can connect through in Keynote Remote, or any other iPhone app that requires a connection to your Mac. And the best part about this is that it can be done anywhere, even in the middle of a desert! However, I do agree that this app does need a few additional features, such as a volume control and a play/pause/fast forward/rewind control for audio and video slides, as well as further customization options, such as changing presenter notes text size and other things. But other than that, I think this app is top-notch! (it would become a definite 5-star app if those features were added)
Lack of speed kills any value the app may have
tomkks 2.0 stars Version: 1.0
It is a nice app. Very simple and easy to setup and use, however the lag time between slides is unacceptable. It is especially slow if you are trying to "build" in lines on a single slide. It took me about 30 seconds for each line on a quick network. As stated by a commenter below: Why not bluetooth?
Good Remote and Idea, But...
Caribbean Native Son 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
Okay I work in the Corperate Production/Audio Visial industry. It's all about presentations. 1. Remote needs Bluetooth, not every venue has wireless connectivity. 2. An option to arrow forward or back. I should be able to choose this in some sort of preference. Apple please build bluetooth in the next iPhone update. Trust me, presenters are showing up with Macs more and more and would love the remote feature, but would need wireless which hotels and venues charge out the rare for. -George
No offense
Cekle 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
No offense to the other users of keynote remotes, but isn't an accelerometer-controlled flip from landscape to portrait a bad idea for a remote like this?
WiFi connection not the way to go. Why not bluetooth?
ErnieAttorney 2.0 stars Version: 1.0
I was waiting for Apple to do something like this. I knew when they finally did it that the design would be simple and elegant. And functional, or so I thought. Using WiFi as the mode of controlling your presentation is dicey at best. Using WiFi as the communications medium means the speaker will have to assume: (1) there is WiFi at the venue (preferably free of charge); and (2) the WiFi connection is operating smoothly the whole time (and if it's free more people will use it and make it more likely to have a hiccup).
Could Use Some Work
John Rust 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
It's an excellent start and concept, but isn't as good as it could be - I personally still find the Apple Remote to be a better slide switcher.
