With the introduction of FaceTime video calls, multitasking, and the high resolution Retina display, the iPhone 4 has moved even further away from being just a powerful phone and web-surfing device. Between the built-in features and the hundreds of thousands of options in the App Store, not to mention a few key accessories, the iPhone 4 can be figuratively formed and changed to fit your daily needs, whether you’re planning your daily commute, knocking out items on your to-do list, or simply looking to try a new restaurant. Last.fm and Spotify Apps Get iOS4 Multitasking Support
Calendar16 Fri, 02 Jul 2010 16:12:38 UTC +00:00
Posted 07/02/2010 at 8:12am | by Florence Ion If you thought Pandora was your only option for a multitasking, background playing music app, you're seriously going to love this news. Both Last.fm and Spotify have announced that their app updates include iOS 4 support and background listening. Last.fm [iTunes link] is a spiffy music service that enables you to track your music listening stats and play a radio station chockfull of songs you've already been listening to. All you have to do is sign up for a profile. Last.fm has got some great social networking integrations, too, and you can see your music compatibility with other friends. Spotify [iTunes UK link], on the other hand, is EU only at the moment.  It's a seriously nifty music service, and the five minutes we did get with it once made us pine greatly for its services. In this instance, you'll be able to Read More
Trapster's Background Location Speed Trap
Calendar16 Sat, 26 Jun 2010 00:00:00 UTC +00:00
What better timing than a cross-country road-trip, and the beginning of my effort to become a fully-mobile blogger, for Trapster, the iPhone app that keeps track of road hazards, speed traps and even roadkill, to update with background location for iOS 4? The update means that, as me and my traveling partner-in-crime make our way across the length of the Volunteer State today, we'll be constantly updated on the various snags and snares awaiting us. Or will we? Trapster is one of the first applications we've heard of (outside of location-based check-in service Loopt) to bring background location to the new iOS 4, and it means a world of difference for an app like this. In theory, the app will check your location against a database of user-submitted road hazards and notify you when one is near. It's like having a radar detector that alerts you to not only speed traps, Read More
The great music recognition app, Shazam Encore, just got an interesting new update. On top of allowing you to get tour and ticket information for tagged artists, Shazam Encore & Shazam Red can now redirect you at will to your Pandora or Last.Fm app so you can hear more similar songs on the go. Furthermore, this update also allows you to access Shazam’s official Blog directly from the app. While Shazam is available pretty much everywhere, Pandora is still US only and Last.Fm is limited to the US, Germany and the UK, so no luck for the rest of you. Also, make sure to have Pandora or Last.Fm installed if you want to see the new functions appear. Read More

Five iPhone apps that can save you money
Calendar16 Wed, 23 Sep 2009 14:58:00 UTC +00:00
Keep BetterDeal on hand at the grocery store to figure out which size offers the best deal. As I often tell people, it's not the price of the iPhone that bothers me--it's the monthly fees! (Grumble, grumble, AT&T, grumble.) Alas, while there's no way to get around that $70/month minimum, at least I can use my iPhone to save money on other things: gas, groceries, books, DVDs, and even energy. Let's take a look at five killer apps that can help you pocket extra cash. I know a lot of people are partial to AAA Discounts, which serves up deals near your location. Great app, but only if you're a triple-A member. I'm also a fan of the suggestion over at Wise Bread to use Pandora instead of buying music, though why limit yourself to one music-streaming app? Grab Last.fm and Slacker while you're at it. OK, you've got my picks. Read More

1 Billion Apps Later - Here Are Some of Our Favorites
Calendar16 Fri, 24 Apr 2009 22:30:01 UTC +00:00
Today, Apple announced that its customers have now downloaded a whopping one billion applications from its App Store. Here at ReadWriteWeb, quite a few of us have iPhones, so we thought that this would be a good time to feature some of our favorite apps. We download and test a lot of iPhone apps, but here are the ones that have stood the test of time for us. The App Store is now home to over 35,000 applications, so this is obviously only a small selection of applications, but these are the apps that we don't hesitate to recommend to our friends. We couldn't get feedback from everybody on the RWW team (and our BlackBerry users weren't very forthcoming with suggestions either), but here are the recommendations from Richard MacManus (R), Marshall Kirkpatrick (M), Frederic Lardinois (F), and Phil Glockner (P). It's Last.fm, not Audioscrobbler
Amarshwren 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
I'm not going to complain about the fact Last.fm can't track your iTunes plays and use them to update your last.fm account like the desktop app does. Oh wait, I just did! This is a limitation of what Apple allows them do do. Last.fm, keep up the good work! Apple... can't we make something happen here?
Brilliant! These guys (actually the one guy doing coding it) "get's it"!
woobert 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
As good as it gets for iPhone apps! Compare this to Pandora's app, and you'll know just how great this is. Sure, it sufferes from not being able to scrobble what you play from your own library, and it won't run in the background, but those are restrictions from Apple, not Last.fm. Thanks for showing people how to write apps!
good idea....but....
-MaK- 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
this app is cool i like the idea BUT everytime i try to listen to a radio station my iPod crashes.... good that this app is free.... not so happy... waiting for an update...
Without Apple's restrictions, this program could have been much better
StevenSimpson 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
I have seen the program that was developed for the jailbroken iPhone and I have to say that it seems like it was a much better program. I would have given it 5 full stars but I want the ability of scrobbling songs from the iPod, especially since I dont have wifi access at work...
Not that great
SamWho! 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
At first, I was excited about getting music and similar music without having to buy it. After the first couple of songs, the app would just crash. I tried it again and it did the same thing. I ended up deleting the app. Very frustrating! Highly disapponted.
yes, this is terrible
pfile 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
compared to the jailbreak version (mobilescrobbler) this is really just terrible. in short, i am not buying an iphone 3g or upgrading my iphone to 2.0 until this thing can scrobble plays in the background. what's sad is that c99koder developed this application and its completely hamstrung compared to it's jailbreak counterpart.
This one is a keeper.
robotplague 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
I love, love, love Last.fm and was very happy to see they decided to make an app. Everything works as expected and is nicely polished. I do hope down the road they add the ability to scrobble tracks and write in shout boxes. Get it!
This app is useless.
ddc fan 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
The point of last.fm for most users is to be able to scrobble what we listen to in iTunes (and now, on our iPhone). Well, this app does not include scrobbling. So basically it's just trying to do what the Pandora app already does, but Pandora seems to work better. Not good.
Smart
Mr Fork 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
I think last.fm knows my taste in music better that I do, this is amazing!
Without scrobbling, what is Last.fm?
T-baums 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
Last.fm has forgotten its roots. Let's not, dear friends who began with AudioScrobbler so long ago, forget just what the point of Last.fm was meant to be - a way to look at what we like and to suggest similar tracks based on our patterns.
Doesnt Work
Jaxx_mty 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
Great idea. Is free. But doesnt work.
Great application. Perfect for the iPhone/iPod Touch
concept10 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
This is a well written application that allows you to stream music over any available connection. Faster than AOL and has more features and polish. Works great over EDGE (I'm still on first gen phone).
Finally!
DLamas87 5.0 stars Version: 2.0.1
Music lovers and non-jailbroken iPhone/iPod touch owners rejoice. The app is great! Playback stops when you use Safari though
meh.
iheartgiraffes 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
iPod scrobbling plz?
Great
John-Vincent 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
I was just searching for a last.fm app yesterday and it wasn't there so this app is brand new. My only complaint is that the unofficial one was much better
Don't waste your time
rjackb 1.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
What a crappy application.
No Scrobbling?
flcinusa 2.0 stars Version: 1.0
Does pretty much what the Pandora app does, but I was hoping it would do some kind of mobile scrobbling on the go, but no... Bit of a disappointment
Waaaaay better
wrizacked 5.0 stars Version: 2.0.0
Since the latest update for 2.1 the interface is so much cleaner and fluid. Works awesome. Sweet!!!! Love the calendar tour UI and the way everything "just works" now. Thx.
Could be better
coliv77 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
I wish it had the ability to play from the local media files and scrobble them so I could keep up with my stats.
No scrobbling makes this weak
Bitter_with_this_app 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
Seriously - the only thing I used Last.fm for was for scrobbling what I listen to on iTunes and the iPod. Since this app doesn't scrobble, it is useless to me.
An excellent start!
punkassjim 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
Having VERY reluctantly given up MobileScrobbler to upgrade to iPhone 2.0, I'm quite glad to see that Sam has made this offering for the AppStore. Of course, since it doesn't scrobble, there's a good possibility I'll be attempting to install MobileScrobbler 1.4.5 on firmware 2.0 once the jailbreak is available. Here's hoping it's not entirely incompatible.
Does not scrobble
BPinard 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
If you're looking for scrobbling functionality, this app isn't for you.

Me likey no crashes and along with pandora they rock
What's not to like?
Ramsnazz 5.0 stars Version: 2.0.1
Very nicely done with an easy to understand interface. Great sound quality with no glitches. Surprised that they don't charge for it.
Last.fm > Pandora
xlepex 5.0 stars Version: 2.0.0
A much better application since the 2.0 update. It is now much less glitchy and easier to use. Drink the coolaid people, you won't regret it
