Layar Vision can recognize real world objects
Calendar16 Thu, 04 Aug 2011 10:37:13 UTC +00:00
Mobile augmented reality platform Layar is about to be enhanced with a new feature that recognizes real world objects and can show digital content on top of them. Dubbed Layar Vision, it will allow users to hold their smartphone over posters, magazines and newspapers to view and interact with these “digital experiences.” On the other hand, these experiences will offer brands and publishers “new ways to engage with customers.” Layar Vision can detect up to 50 target objects on which a wide range of augmentations can be displayed. These objects are easily combined with existing location-based layers, and, in concert with audio, video and animated 3D objects, can create truly immersive experiences. The Vision-enabled Layar for iOS and Android, as well as Layar Player (which allows developers to add augmented reality features in their apps) will be released during the fourth quarter of this year. Layar platform is already used by Read More
Using smartphone for travel
Calendar16 Tue, 14 Jun 2011 09:52:05 UTC +00:00
A smartphone is a great companion for every trip. There are a number of apps that can make your travel easier, whether it’s about finding a place to stay, monuments and historical sights to see, or learning more about the city/place you’re visiting… there’s (usually) an app for that. Here are some apps I’ve found useful in my travels. Please note that I’m linking to iOS apps and that not all of them are available on other platforms. The point is to get the idea which apps to use for what purpose, to better plan and ultimately enjoy your trip. Let’s start with the flight search… Flight search Pretty much every major airline now has its iPhone app. Moreover, some companies support Android and BlackBerry whereas some others are experimenting with newer platforms like Windows Phone 7. If you live near a major airport, you should grab the app of the Read More
Layar Review
Calendar16 Wed, 09 Feb 2011 18:30:25 UTC +00:00
Posted 02/09/2011 at 10:30am | by Cory Bohon Augmented reality applications seem to be taking mobile devices by storm -- and for good reason, since we've wanted a RoboCop-like heads-up display since...well, since we first saw RoboCop. Augmented reality apps over overlay data on the camera of your smartphone, allowing you to see information like weather and local points of interest -- and they can even keep you from walking into walls while texting or emailing. Layar, however, is different -- it's one app containing several different augmented reality layers to choose from. From weather to art to nightlife, Layar has categories that can interest anyone. Using the Layers browser, you can search through and try out the more than 524 (at the time of this writing) layers. Hey, there's pizza over there! With the Layar Local Search layer, you can find local points of interest.  Layar already boasts quite a Read More
Layar has launched the non-beta version of Layar Player, a free tool that allows iPhone developers to offer augmented reality experiences from their apps. In addition, the company is also pitching the new product to other companies like agencies and brands. The beta period concludes with the launch of three Layar Player enabled iPhone apps – Bing sponsored Snowboard Hero, an augmented reality extension of the popular game that allows players to earn more points; the Layar Trade, an application helping people view recent projects and work from local builders; and an application to improve your neighborhood letting neighbors post their issues and ideas for the public space on the map. Commenting on the launch, Layar’s Gerben Klop (product manager of the Layar Player) said: “One of the main great features of the Layar Player is that you can launch the power of AR from within the context of your app.” Read More

Think "Star Wars" games have been done to death? I guarantee you've never seen anything like Star Wars Arcade: Falcon Gunner. It's like the PC classic "TIE Fighter" mixed with the ingenious UFO on Tape mixed with the Layar Reality Browser. Confused? This video might help: As you can see, the game overlays itself on whatever appears in your iPhone camera lens. Point it at the night sky and, presto, you're blasting TIE fighters in outer space. Point it at the dog and, um, presto, you're blasting TIE fighters coming from your dog. Whether or not this turns out to be cool or just plain weird remains to be seen. Fortunately, Falcon Gunner also comes with rendered backgrounds, just in case you're not into the whole augmented-reality thing. According to Gizmodo, the game "will also feature other iconic moments from the Star Wars universe," like the Battle of Hoth and escape Read More

After seeing the first augmented reality enhanced magazine (Sueddeutsche Zeitung), we have great use of AR technology to share… During the Lowlands music festival in the Netherlands, the Stedelijk Museum has lent digital versions from its world famous art collection to visitors with Layar application installed on their smartphones (Android or iPhone). Here’s how it all worked out: At a special desk, visitors were able to choose one of the 175 famous art works by artists like Picasso, Karel Appel, Andy Warhol and Gilbert & George. Then once they “borrowed” an art work, they were able to place it anywhere on the festival terrain so that other visitors could see it by pointing their smartphone (with Layar app installed) around the area. The whole idea is called “Borrowing real art in augmented reality” and I love it… For the record, Lowlands festival took place on August 20, 21 and 22th. You Read More
I have faith that once the novelty of the coolest new smartphone feature wears off, I will again walk the streets with my eyes open to the world around me, not to the screen of a smartphone. Until then, forget it. The best new thing to hit smartphones is augmented reality. These apps, like Goggles (free, for Android phones) and Layar (free, for Android and Apple devices), are like space-age glasses. Point your smartphone in any direction and look through the camera viewer, and it will reveal information about what it sees. Want to know the artist responsible for the print hanging in that restaurant? The name of the building with the enormous gargoyles? The last selling price of that house up ahead? Pull out your smartphone and press a button. There are limits, of course, even for apps like Goggles and Layar, which are two of the more promising entrants Read More
Layar, Opera Mini top GetJar app awards
Calendar16 Tue, 13 Jul 2010 00:00:00 UTC +00:00
Applications like Opera Mini, Layar and Lookout topped GetJar’s first annual Gettie Awards. Team IntoMobile was there last night and it was quite an interesting experience. I’ll get to the winners first, as GetJar was seeking the best Java, Symbian, Windows Mobile, BlackBerry, iPhone and Android apps. The winners received some monetary reward (I don’t think it was straight fat stacks of cash but some sort of developer compensation) and the acclaim of the mobile world. The Java app winner was WaveSecure Backup, Nimbuzz nabbed the Symbian award and Opera Mini grabbed the top spot for Windows Mobile. Tap Tap Revenge 3 was named the best app for the Apple iPhone, Lookout nabbed the best Android app and Layar was named the top overall mobile program. “It was an honor for GetJar to host this celebration for the mobile developers that shape and drive our industry,” Patrick Mork, CMO of GeJar, Read More
Today in Amsterdam, popular augmented reality (AR) mobile browser maker Layar is celebrating the one year anniversary of its launch with an event called NEXT. In the company's brief lifetime, it has attracted millions of users to the Layar mobile application on Android and iPhone devices with its impressive catalog of layers. Today, the company made several announcements including additional international pre-load deals with handset manufacturers, new features for its browser, and partnerships with major brands. Making the biggest splash today at NEXT was a pair of announcements saved for the end of the opening keynotes by the Layar founders. CEO Raimo van der Klein announced that Layar will be opening up to user generated content, a feature popular among other browsers that lets users place tags in virtual space. Additionally, Layar is currently developing image recognition technology which it hopes to implement into its browser by the end of the Read More

You Look Ridiculous: The Other Augmented Reality Issue
Calendar16 Wed, 10 Mar 2010 15:27:09 UTC +00:00
Augmented Reality (AR) is a hot topic in the app stores these days. So, what’s AR? It’s multiple technologies being used simultaneously to provide you with data relevant to your location. This includes your phone’s compass to determine the direction you are facing, GPS to determine your exact location, an Internet connection to gather information about your surroundings, a camera to capture your reality and the screen to augment it with extremely specific data. The app that gets the most free publicity is Layar for its on-again off-again relationship with Apple’s App Store. Whether or not this app should be allowed in the App Store is the issue people have been harping on for several months now. I think there is a much more urgent AR issue. You look completely ridiculous when you use it. Seriously. People take pictures all the time with their mobile phones. It’s a simple, quick task. Read More
Augmented Reality v0.1 [Image Cache]
Calendar16 Wed, 03 Mar 2010 22:00:35 UTC +00:00
In 2002, to experience augmented reality was to lash 26 pounds of equipment to your body and hobble waywardly within the confines of predefined area. In 2010, you can augment the entire world with a free app for your smartphone. This shot of the Columbia University's Mobile Augmented Reality System (MARS) comes from a PopSci story written 10 Februaries ago. (The magazine's searchable archives just went online.) This right around the time that augmented reality had made the jump from esoteric sci-fi concept to actual thing, albeit in the form of awkward research projects and simplistic military applications: If you strap on this rig, as [the writer] had, you begin to understand the profound possibilities of an AR system, which can superimpose computer-generated text, graphics, 3D animation, sound, or any other or any other digitized data on the real world. As much as modern smartphone apps like Layar actually do more—they're Read More

Layar Is Back On The Store, Snappier Than Ever
Calendar16 Wed, 03 Mar 2010 13:11:27 UTC +00:00
Layar, the much hyped augmented reality app is now finally back on the App Store after a prolonged absence. First released a couple months ago in October, the app had been then removed by its developer to get some much needed performance improvements. Well, they’ve been hard at work and Layar is now back with an entirely new engine, which as they claim, should make the overall experience much more smoother. On top of the many performance improvement, this new version comes with some extended language support, as well as a couple new “layars”. It’s 3GS only, but completely free, so go check it out! Quick App: Layar (Augmented) Reality Browser for iPhone
Calendar16 Sat, 17 Oct 2009 00:56:03 UTC +00:00
By Rene Ritchie, Friday, Oct 16, 2009 | Layar Reality Browser [Free - iTunes link] is technically an augmented reality browser for the iPhone 3GS (it depends in large part on the compass to work its wonders). For the uninitiated, augmented reality typically uses GPS location and internet data to layer information on the screen over live video. In Layar’s case, for example, to show local search results for “pizza” over the restaurants in an intersection you’re looking at on your iPhone. Whether cool translates into usefulness — we’ll see. But on cool alone, it’s definitely worth a look. (You can also view search results in map and list view, but what’s the fun in that?” Read More

Augmented Reality to the max with Layars for iPhone 3GS
Calendar16 Thu, 15 Oct 2009 23:00:00 UTC +00:00
Every so often an app comes along that you just get excited about. Well, I'm excited about the Layar Reality Browser [iTunes link], and even better: it's free! This app has been available on the Android platform, and iPhone users have been eagerly awaiting it. Wait no more. The Layar app will only run on an iPhone 3GS because it really needs that built-in compass. So what does it do? Quite a lot. The app displays real time information based on your location and the direction you are facing, overlaying the camera with locations and information that you are looking for. Yes, like other apps with augmented reality, it can find food and shopping, but that's only the beginning. You can find apartments for rent, Flickr photos taken near your location, mountain peaks, tourist information, and the list goes on and on. The Layar screen shows your live camera view, a Read More
Android-Only No More! Layar Hits The App Store
Calendar16 Thu, 15 Oct 2009 16:42:53 UTC +00:00
Augmented reality apps are really starting to catch on with iPhone users.  It all started with Yelp, the first to secretly slip augmented reality functionality into an app, and then many others followed in their wake as soon as iPhone OS 3.1 was released, including game developers.  But back in mid-August we discovered that Android’s most popular and most effective augmented reality browser, Layar, would be coming to the iPhone 3GS.  Since we are not overly fond of allowing other competing platform’s users to have all of the fun, we have been waiting not-so-patiently for Layar‘s release in the App Store.  Well folks, that day has finally arrived. If you are not overly familiar with the concept quite yet, augmented reality apps, such as Layar Reality Browser, basically place a digital layer of information over the top of a real-life view of the world around you.  The digital layer displays information Read More
Layar, the (somewhat) augmented reality browser previously available only on Android, has hit the App Store. If it seemed cool on a G1, it's probably going to zoom at showing you what's nearby and where on a 3GS. All the same features apply to the iPhone release. Choose your layers from sites like Wikipedia, Trulia real estate search, Flickr and Twitter mashups, point your phone around you, and Layar brings up the results as blips on a planar, sonar-type screen, with a smidge of information about each one. You can tag favorite layers, grab screenshots, and get mapped directions to anything that seems just a tad to far to blindly walk toward. The best use case is finding food, services, and neat stuff to check out on vacation; at worst, you're probably going to loose some pocket cash on yet another coffee fix. Layar is a free download for iPhone 3GS Read More

Layar, Multi-Purpose Augmented Reality App Hits App Store
Calendar16 Thu, 15 Oct 2009 03:39:13 UTC +00:00
Layar [App Store, Free], the highly anticipated augmented reality application for the iPhone 3GS, was recently released in the App Store. The Layar browser lets you view things like “houses for sale, popular bars and shops, touristic information of the area, play a live game, etcetera,” presented in a layer over live video taken through the camera in real time. To use the app, you select a “layer” from the featured or popular section to be placed overtop of the video feed and hold your iPhone vertically in front of you so the camera faces the horizon. You’ll be presented with the information from that layer as points around you as though they existed in the real world. It also shows informations about the locations in the view of the camera in a spot at the bottom of the screen. Filters can be adjusted by tapping the button in the right hand Read More
Layar grabbed headlines a few months back as one of the first augmented reality browsers/apps to go live. Today, they’re making waves with the launch of their new Layar Reality Browser iPhone app [iTunes link]! If you check the AppStore, you’ll find that Layar is now ready for users (you have to have a digital compass for Layar to work correctly) to take full advantage of the app’s various different augmented reality “layers” to find interesting places around them. “AR” stands for “augmented reality.” Think of augmented reality as your web-enhanced view of the world. When you normally look through your smartphone’s camera viewfinder, you see the world as it looks through your eyes. When you look through an augmented reality view of the world, you’ll see your normal view of the world with all kinds of data points overlaid on top. In Layar’s case, it finds nearby restaurants, businesses, Twitter Read More
Is Apple Going to Support Augmented Reality, After All?
Calendar16 Thu, 15 Oct 2009 01:53:13 UTC +00:00
The cranky elves that run the iPhone App Store may be warming up after all to the emerging field of Augmented Reality (AR). AR app makers, who are building sci-fi-like interfaces for viewing data about the physical world on top of the mobile phone's camera, were beginning to feel spurned. Today Apple both approved the most eagerly anticipated Augmented Reality app yet, Amsterdam's AR browser Layar (iTunes link), and made its primary challenger, Wikitude (iTunes link), a featured app in the iTunes App Store. Those moves came a month after many AR-watchers were dissapointed that Apple didn't offer big support to Augmented Reality when launching the latest version of the iPhone OS. Some critics complain that even if some forms of AR are being permitted by Apple, the company still has a tight grip on APIs that could enable whole new methods of displaying data on top of the phone's camera Read More

Half an hour ago, I just had an iPhone 3GS. Now, I have an iPhone 3GS with Layar installed. It was one of the main questions I had for the Dutch company, which markets an augmented reality browser, when they launched at the Mobile 2.0 Europe event in Barcelona last year. When would they be complementing their Android program with an application for the iPhone? They said it’d come in the fall of this year, and while there have been a number of AR applications made available on the App Store in the meantime, Layar’s finally arrived a couple of hours ago and it’s worth a second look. Ok after an initial crash then a phone reboot....I must say this app is very impressive
Change the App's icon!
Shaan 3.0 stars Version: 2.0
Please give the app a rounded-square background so it doesn't just blend into the home screen. I love the app, but I hate the icon. I have 50+ apps on my phone and they are all square shaped except for Layar, very annoying.... Please change this ASAP.

Right?
All sizzle, no steak.

I'll revisit this review in the future as the presentation is very nice. Unfortunately, I can't find a single, practical use for this app.
Crash. Bad UI.
Baldshark 1.0 stars Version: 2.0
The UI in AR mode is crowded and busy. The overlayed grid is annoying and just gets in the way. Poor attempt.
Neat idea...needs refinement
johncarync 3.0 stars Version: 2.0
It's a cool idea but the interface is unintuitive. When I want to try something I'm usually at a loss as to what button to press. I wind up randomly pressing buttons until it finally does what I want it to. Amazing that they took such a simple idea and executed it in such a confusing way.
Crashes
GarrDaddyMan 2.0 stars Version: 2.0
It is really a neat idea, but the search crashes each time I look for a new layer. Yelp & urban spoon do what I need without the crashing.
Doesn't work
George2112 1.0 stars Version: 2.0
I've tried all settings and am next to a mall and no results for food. Surprised there are good reviews in here.
Gimmick garbage
Mohawke 1.0 stars Version: 2.0
There are so many apps that let me find things so why would I want to waste my battery finding things? It's cool for a minute...
A step in the right direction
Liverpool4l 4.0 stars Version: 2.0
Accuracy will be a problem always I guess...but This is a lot more useable than the rest of The AR garbage out there
The future is now!
Matthew savant 5.0 stars Version: 2.0
