'League of Evil 2' Trailer - I Need This
Calendar16 Mon, 06 Feb 2012 18:32:01 UTC +00:00
Remember League of Evil [$1.99]? It came out early last year, and the best way to describe it is the title of our review: "The closest thing to Super Meat Boy on iOS." League of Evil controlled great, making difficult Super Meat Boy-style platforming surprisingly fun. They even eventually added iCade and Joypad [Free] support, giving two more awesome control options. Check out the recently released trailer for the sequel: I'm digging the new art style. February 15th can't come quick enough.   #3   Today, 01:57 PM Senior Member iPod Touch (4th Gen), iOS 4.x Join Date: Jun 2010 Location: Indiana, USA Posts: 6,369 friggin AWESOME!!! The 50 Best iOS Games of 2011: #50-1
Calendar16 Mon, 02 Jan 2012 22:18:44 UTC +00:00
In case you've been busy spending the holidays with friends and family, or just cross-country skiing to the North Pole, here's our recap of last week's epic, five-part series on the 50 best iOS games of 2011. How many do you own? #50: Temple Run In 2011, independent developers Imangi Studios had their biggest hit yet: The endless running game Temple Run. A cross between Canabalt and Raiders of the Lost Ark, in Temple Run you have to make split-second decisions and quick button presses to try to survive. The combinations of simple swipes and tilt controls, plus Temple Run's freemium pricing and stylish 3D graphics, made it one of the year's best high-score survival games. Our Bottom Line: Now is your chance to be Indiana Jones. #49: Tapper World Tour After nearly 30 years, the Tapper license awoke from a drunken stupor to revel in the App Store. Tapper World Read More

Hopefully many of our favorite items will also be of interest to you. Please feel free to comment on our selections, and suggest picks of your own. Check out this week’s picks after the break. League of Evil (v1.5) League of Evil is yet another cute platform game that has that familiar 16-bit style. You play as a character simply named “Agent” and you are tasked with destroying mad scientists that belong to the “League of Evil”. What this game lacks in narrative it makes up with gameplay. The controls are very responsive, and are the closest thing I’ve found to an old Super Read More

Read More
First Screens Hit for Upcoming Sequel 'League of Evil 2'
Calendar16 Wed, 30 Nov 2011 15:00:02 UTC +00:00
Easily one of my favorite platforming games (and just plain favorite games period, really) is this past February's League of Evil [$1.99/Lite] from Ravenous Games and WoblyWare. The game featured bite-sized levels of increasingly difficult platforming challenges in a similar vein to Super Meat Boy, with a great 3 star rating system for each level that begged you to replay over and over until you've perfected every one. League of Evil became known as one of the top examples of tight virtual controls on iOS as well, and during the past year numerous content updates have added tons of new levels for more than 160 total along with new features like ghost replays and iCade support. In short, League of Evil owns, and is one of the best platforming games on the App Store. With the positive reception and success of League of Evil, it's no surprise that a sequel would Read More
A Collection of Sales and Freebies to Check Out
Calendar16 Wed, 26 Oct 2011 10:00:45 UTC +00:00
I'm not totally sure what the occasion is, but there sure does seem to be a ton of sales going on this week. Perhaps it's some pre-Halloween celebrating, or maybe developers have seen the number of new iPhones sold this month and want to capitalize on all of the potential new iOS gamers. Whatever the reason though, I don't think anyone will argue with getting some great deals on some new games. Without further ado, here's a list of some recent price drops and freebies from the past 24 hours: A couple of things about the list above. First of all, all the versions of the original Puzzle Quest games have been updated with iOS 5 support and visual enhancements (including Retina Display support), as well as have been tuned up in the way of bug fixes. Second, Tactical Soldier: Undead Rising is due to get a humongous update with a Read More
At first glance, Candy Boy [99c / HD] by Colorbox looks like a regular one-screen platform game - and to some extent it is. You control Casper, who runs, jumps and long-jumps around the level, climbing over blocks, collecting three coins and trying not to fall into water or holes. And in later levels there's enemies to avoid. Yup, that certainly sounds like a platform game. But, at its core, Candy Boy is actually a puzzle game, based on completing match-3 puzzles . There's no standard rectangular match-3 game-board though, as the blocks are often distributed around the platform level. Here's how it works:  Casper walks around carrying a colored block of candy above his head, which he can drop anywhere on the level. If he places the candy next to two other candy blocks of the same color, they disappear. In many match-3 games the goal is to achieve a Read More

'League Of Evil' Is Free For The Day
Calendar16 Tue, 09 Aug 2011 21:00:00 UTC +00:00
Earlier this July, League of Evil [Free] creator Ravenous Games bumped the price of League of Evil back to its normal-ish tag of $1.99. The studio has once again fiddled with the price, though I’d imagine the new one won’t be the cause of too many e-groans. For the next 24 hours the game is $0. Free, guys! Free! For those of you not in the know, League of Evil is the App Store’s rough equivalent of Team Meat’s imaginative, but sadistic action platform game Super Meat Boy. Boasting tons of levels, an fantastic lo-fi presentation, and a lot of challenge, League of Evil was an easy recommendation for us to make. At this price, it’s sorta a steal. We contacted Ravenous on the Twitters to hear exactly why it decided to cut the cost of the game. I mean, who knows? Ravenous could be celebrating a staffers’ birthday over there Read More
'Bean's Quest' Review – A Fun Five Minutes
Calendar16 Thu, 21 Jul 2011 23:01:15 UTC +00:00
One thing that I love about the App Store is that there's a lot about it that is highly reminiscent of the old 8-bit and 16-bit era of console gaming. Specifically, I'm talking about how seemingly everyone was just dying to make a character that could turn into a potential franchise, or better yet, a mascot for whatever console it might have been exclusively released on (for instance, Plok). There's a ton of these seemingly B-grade character driven games on the App Store, and Bean of Bean's Quest [$2.99] seems like a modern day in that the protagonist has all the character it needs, however, will we ever be clamoring for another Bean game? I know I didn't really care about Bubsy's platforming career, that's for sure. But, I digress. Bean's Quest is a strange beast. It's one of the shortest iOS games I can think of that I've played recently. Read More

Upcoming '1-Bit Ninja' is a Retro Platformer with a Secret
Calendar16 Fri, 06 May 2011 05:29:35 UTC +00:00
There have been plenty of excellent retro platformers released for iOS over the years, and the upcoming 1-Bit Ninja is one that has really caught my attention. Developer Ben Hopkins and his studio Kode80 wanted to create a platforming game that was an homage to the Game & Watch and Game Boy platformers of his youth, and it’s immediately apparent that 1-Bit Ninja is just that. It features monochrome-style graphics and simple 1 pixel animations, but it’s also hiding a high tech secret under the hood. Anytime during play, you can touch and drag the upper portion of the screen to reveal the world in 3D and get a new perspective on things. If you follow console gaming at all, the effect is somewhat similar to the upcoming title Fez (I highly suggest watching the gameplay video for that game) or even the Paper Mario series. Changing the perspective is not Read More
Last month we checked out the video for Mos Speedrun [$1.99], a new platformer from developer Physmos. Mos Speedrun looked unique with its emphasis on completing levels as quickly as possible, and for its use of the ghosts from previous failed attempts running along with you in the background. Today Mos Speedrun is finally available, and it’s every bit as much fun as we’d hoped it would be. Mos Speedrun contains 20 levels, each with 4 distinct goals to attain. There’s simply completing the level, completing the level within the specified time goal, collecting every coin in the level, and searching out and collecting a hidden skull. The different goals are a great design decision, and give reason to play each level multiple times. You can leisurely explore a level collecting coins and looking for the hidden skull, but this also gives you a chance to familiarize yourself with its layout. Read More

An interesting trailer just passed through our inbox for an upcoming platforming game called Mos Speedrun. The game is being developed by Physmo, who have previously released Seaglass [99¢/HD] in the App Store, and it caught our attention with its focus on completing levels as fast as possible. It appears that just one hit will kill the character known as Mos, and the ghosts from your previous attempts will be running alongside you in the background to give you a means of measuring how well you’re doing in your current run (though this feature can be turned off if you choose). Physmo promises a simple to use two button control scheme for working your way through the initial 20 levels, with additional level packs already planned for updates. Each level will have multiple goals to shoot for too, like strictly finishing as fast as possible, collecting every coin and item, or Read More

Posted 02/16/2011 at 10:13am | by Andrew Groen Last month an indie platformer called The Blocks Cometh was submitted to Apple for approval and was released on the App Store shortly thereafter. It was even given the spotlight in the App Store's new and notable section.  But here's the kicker: the game's developer had no idea it had ever been submitted. Pirates had stolen the source code and submitted the game themselves. Since then, Apple has taken down the pirated copy of the game, and now the official copy is set to be released tomorrow with a little love from the fantastic platformer League of Evil. The Blocks Cometh is a really interesting take on the platformer genre. To understand what it's like to play, imagine you've been shrunk down and placed inside an ongoing game of Tetris. You must run and jump for as long as possible in a desperate Read More
Back in January, one of the unfortunate aspects of developing for the App Store reared its ugly head. Developer Halfbot’s popular Flash title The Blocks Cometh was stolen nearly pixel for pixel and released in the App Store by a different developer. This sort of thing has certainly happened before, but what made it even worse is that Halfbot didn’t even find out about this injustice until they saw the counterfeit version of their game in the App Store’s New & Noteworthy section. So not only did their game get released under their noses while they were in the midst of porting it to iOS themselves, but Apple even featured it. Halfbot quickly took action and informed Apple of the situation, the wheels of justice cranked ever so slowly, and eventually the unauthorized version of The Blocks Cometh was pulled from the App Store. Since then, Halfbot has finished up the Read More

Since 1993: Boomshakalaka! League of Evil is a brand new action platformer made for the iOS-powered devices. The twist is in the use of retro pixel-art graphic which make the game look old-school-ish, bringing back nostalgia in some of us (ok that’s just me). In addition to graphics, there’s also the same/similar kind of in-game music to make for a complete experience. The plot is simple – evil scientists around the world have teamed up to mesh their malicious brains into a single villainous League of Evil. Your job is to stop them from destroying everything that’s good in this world by leaping, flipping and jumping through 60 stages that include urban environments as well as locations near pyramids. Of course, social element is also built-in, so you can unlock achievements through both OpenFeint and Game Center. Aside from the full game that costs 99 cents, there’s also a free, lite version which is Read More

Is the GREATEST platformer with the most responsive controls to hit the app store yet! This game is truly phenomenal. For the first time, a platformer feels better played on iOS than it's Flash version. The graphics are pixel-like but made with care (unlike super mega worm). This game is as good as super meat boy minus the headcrabs. Make it universal and it's the perfect iOS game. (game of the future :)
Great but short
Leo 11 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
Really is quite an excellent game and very well priced. unfortunately too short and way too easy for any Super Meat Boy fans, even when aiming for three stars and case on all levels. Paid level packs please! More traps and tougher levels (including shorter times for three star rating) would be great. Gameplay is 5 stars but length/difficulty is 3. Excellent work, cant wait for more.
Super Meat Boy Jr.
Magnalon 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Love it!
Best platformer on iOS
lilman4 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
Love the gameplay and style, reminds me of N+ and Super Meat Boy. Only problem is the controls are too spaced out to use comfortably on an iPad. Would rate 5 star if you added customizable controls or make this a universal app with iPad specific layout.
Great! Two sugestions for developers
Patrick5703 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
I had a lot of fun with this game- But the levels went quick. You guys could make a random level generator, also could you make the try again button bigger and seperate.
4 stars
Guy027 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
Brilliant game, loads of fun. But it does come with it's limited amount of flaws. No iPod support (bummer) controls where a little laggy (not often enough to be a big issue) and it wad too short or I just had nothing else to do) I finished it in a matter of 2 hours, overall great game and I highly recommend it. •This is not a fake review•
Mmmm platforming goodness
CalebLyons 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Side-scrolling awesomeness. Ninja Gaiden meets Mega Man. Retro fans - take notice! I'd love to see this taken to the next tier with longer levels much like Mega Man, compete with power ups, bosses and new enemies!
Great
CaVincent 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Controls are great. Fun gameplay.
Best controls of any iOS game
Drakey101 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
This is the greatest game that I have ever played on my iPhone. No move that I have made was unintentional so far, and no move in the future will be. I love how they used the guy from "The Blocks Cometh". This is the best game for a buck, so give up the double cheeseburger and grab a copy today!
Freakn Retro Awsomeness
Kratos13 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
This the best platform retro style game in the AppStore maybe even the best game everything is perfect the art style the gameplay and controls are flawless highly recommended to everyone if u love the classics like Mario u will love this game for sure
Great
rshkhsee 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
I agree with the suggestion of some long untimed levels, maybe with different atmosphere here and there, different scenery and obstacles. As is, this is a super cool game!
Super Platformer!
komickid 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Wow this is an amazing iphone game for all those who loved super meat boy. Extremely tight controls for an iphone platformer!
Fantastic! But too short
t0nyxgq 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Probably the best game I've played on the iphone but it was over way too quick and I got 3 stars and all brief cases from every level with seconds to spare. I hope you guys add more and harder levels and maybe a hardcore mode for harder time quotas. I think level design can be longer and maybe even a replay with all the guys dying like meatboy would be fun to watch on those harder levels. Harder levels that require flawless precision would be awesome. NO RANDOM generated levels please because difficulty would be too inconsistant and make destroy the integrity of this game. Controls and responsiveness is just like gamecontroller on console. Fantastic!
Best iPhone platformer ever!
jnjplaysxbox 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
This is like super meat boy for the iPhone. Spot on controls that work perfectly, forgot I was playing on a touch screen, because they work so well! Buy it now!!!

Controls great. Looks great. Sounds great. Get it! Speed run leaderboards would be a great addition.
Perfection.
rotstik 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
"League of Evil" is the idevice equivalent of "Super Meat Boy," minus the crazy replays. The music is some of the best I've heard since "Bit Pilot." Fans of pure-skill time attack platformers have finally found their game.
Simply Adorable
justinlovespastry 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
And "adorable" in this context means I adore it because of it's flexibility and feeling of teaching! As you race through the levels, you teach yourself "formulas" to get past a certain pattern of obstacles. Some levels combine a bunch of these patterns (towards the end, purple stages.) Almost as good as the flash game! The camera is fixed on the player. Still great! Finished the day I bought it.
Fun!
Robie79 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
I was pretty skeptical at first but it turned out to be a great little purchase. Simple, fun & addicting. Yes, you really do notice how spot on the controls are. Highly recommended!
1 Bug
BrentWomble 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Excellent game, just 1 bug. If you complete a level with the briefcase but without 3 stars, then go back and get 3 stars (skipping the briefcase), you lose the briefcase. But if you then go back and get the briefcase (without getting 3 stars) you'll have both 3 stars and the briefcase complete.
great game
