Game Time: Wizards and Aliens
Calendar16 Thu, 21 Jul 2011 22:30:47 UTC +00:00
Posted 07/21/2011 at 2:30pm | by Nic Vargus In honor of the 8th and final Harry Potter movie, this week we're taking the opportunity to check out a few science fiction outings offered in the App Store. From wizards to amorphous blobs, even a Slytherin would find love in their hearts for these games. Chillingo$1.99 Blobster is a game about a blob trying to take down an evil Big and Powerful Corporation (no, we're talking about a Michael Moore movie). Blobtopia is being polluted and a ball with no limbs is its only hope. There are currently 40 levels where you can flick, pull, and splat your way through -- and in typical Chillingo fashion, more are promised in future updates. Blobster really isn't comparable to any other game I've played on iOS, but it's fun and long and if you're looking for a finely polished game with a character as Read More

These Are the Apps That Really Show Off the iPad 2
Calendar16 Mon, 14 Mar 2011 20:57:45 UTC +00:00
Now that you have an iPad 2, you can be excused for wanting to share it with (read: rub it in the face of) those that don’t. But how best to show off the iPad 2′s specific advantages, especially at this early stage in the game? There are a few apps that should do the trick nicely. Let’s look first at the apps that come pre-installed on the iPad itself. FaceTime and Photo Booth are both new to the iPad, and Photo Booth is new to iOS altogether. Both take advantage of one of the most notable changes to the iPad in this hardware revision: the addition of a camera. Both also show off two major reasons why people want an iPad in the first place: for fun and for communication. Neither app is particularly amazing from a technical standpoint (although it is cool to see nine simultaneous live feeds being Read More
LEGO Harry Potter: Years 1-4, iOS Review
Calendar16 Mon, 14 Feb 2011 21:45:35 UTC +00:00
Posted 02/14/2011 at 1:45pm | by Andrew Hayward Familiar locations like Platform 9 3/4 are colorfully re-created. As with Star Wars, Batman, and Indiana Jones before it, the Harry Potter franchise has been given the LEGO treatment in a game that lets players guide the boy wizard and pals through a colorful puzzle-solving campaign. But unlike the wimpy iPhone version of LEGO Batman -- which was a simple mini-game collection -- LEGO Harry Potter is a full-fledged adventure with a dozen hours of content and plenty of bonus goodies. Like any good witch or wizard, you can ride your broom in certain segments of the game. LEGO Harry Potter: Years 1-4 spans the content of the first four Harry Potter books and films, and it strongly takes after the previous licensed LEGO titles for game consoles and handhelds, albeit with a fantasy slant. You'll use spells to build piles of LEGO Read More
The iOS platform is home to some great input methods. Developers have utilized multitouch, tilt, and, in some cases, even the gyroscope and microphone for some incredibly creative games that would only be possible on iOS devices. But what about more traditional games that can't be controlled this way? As many of you know, that's where the highly debated virtual joysticks and buttons come into play. The problem with these virtual controls is that for as great as multitouch input is, no iOS device can offer any kind of tactile feedback for virtual controls. Depending on how adept you are with working with them and how cleverly developers design them, the effect of virtual controls ranges from being largely game-breaking to not that big of a deal. Still, over the lifespan of the App Store, it's not hard to think of several games that would be much better using a real Read More
2010: TouchArcade Staff Favorites – Eli
Calendar16 Mon, 03 Jan 2011 19:22:46 UTC +00:00
After getting together to pick our official 2010 iPad and iPhone game of the year, we also had our writers compile lists of their personal favorites from the last year, and their reasons why. This past year was without a doubt absolutely insane for iOS gaming. Assembling our "best of" lists was an incredible task due to the sheer volume of games released, especially as things ramped up near the end of the year culminating in quite possibly the craziest Wednesday in TouchArcade history. The mad rush to play through and review as many of these Wednesday releases as possible between the time they're originally released on the New Zealand App Store and when they appear on the American App Store has made my personal gaming habits a little out of the ordinary, to say the least. My favorite games that I've spent quite a bit of 2010 playing generally are Read More
App Review: LEGO Harry Potter: Years 1-4
Calendar16 Tue, 28 Dec 2010 22:10:27 UTC +00:00
posted by Joe Rossignol on Tuesday, December 28, 2010 at 2:10 pm.   LEGO Harry Potter: Years 1-4 (iTunes link), $4.99 USD, is a game developed by Warner Bros. for the iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad. I know what you’re thinking: “Harry Potter?! Really?” Simply put: yes, really. While LEGOs are usually reserved for kids, LEGO games are clearly not. They are for childish youthful individuals that are either too embarrassed to admit their soft spot or who no longer have their favorite childhood toys at hand. At 1 year too young and about 7 years too old, I decided to take the dive and open the app with a wide mind, and my findings are the following. This not being the first LEGO game that I’ve ever played, I wasn’t surprised to find that the graphics were of abnormally high quality. Although LEGO HP can be bested by a few Read More

It's been a huge week for iOS gaming. Yesterday witnessed the arrival of a dazzling new Star Wars title, and today I've got quick takes on five more noteworthy new games--starting with a just-in-time movie tie-in. Lego Harry Potter plays just like the Nintendo DS and Sony PSP version--and looks even better. Lego Harry Potter: Years 1-4  A near-perfect replica of the outstanding console game, Lego Harry Potter (which I previewed last week) loses almost nothing in its transition to the small screen. (And for now, it's only for small screens: the game requires iOS 4.1 or later, which leaves iPads out.) Alas, there's no option for cooperative play, and using your finger (rather than a virtual joystick) to guide your character often blocks the onscreen action. But all the levels (40+ in all) are there, along with the game's witty cutscenes, 100-plus character choices, and so on. Definitely worth the Read More

This game will not sync with the iPad until Apple release the upcoming 4.?? iOS for the iPad.
Outstanding on iPad!
DotComCTO 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
We're fans of all things Lego in my household (my son is 9 and he is a superfan)! My son has already completed Lego HP on his PSP, so I have a good sense of this particular game. This is an excellent port of the game to the platform. I've only played for a bit, but the graphics, sound and gameplay are spot on. I will say that using your finger to move your character around is a little clunky. Unlike the DS where you use a thin stylus, your finger and hand tend to block the screen - even on an iPad. It's not terrible, but I do wish I had a virtual d-pad option. Again, the visuals on the iPad are simply stunning! The game only cost $4.99 and it is well worth the money...buy it! Great job TellTale and WB! I hope this is a huge hit and you continue to bring the other Lego games to the iOS platform.
Awesome game...just needs a d-pad
ZeroEffect 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
I have been playing this all afternoon. This is a great game for Lego games and Harry Potter fans. My only problem is that it would be better with a d-pad. Some times it is hard to see what's going on with you finger swiping all over the place. That's why I am giving the game 4 out of 5. Regardless, awesome game and worth the $5.
doesnt work with itouch
guy who wants to play 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
I downloaded this game for my ipod touch and it will not register on my touch. I also downloaded Batman Lego which did load on my touch and that game will not load. Im guessing Lego Harry Potter is only for the iphone and ipad even though the sidebar says compatible with itouch. If anyone else has this problem i would love to know im not the only one -or if im doing something wrong - i would love to hear that too.
Good but
Byrdman1323 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
I'd like a virtual joy pad but so far it's a really well done game
Totally awesome!
doodledepoo 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Wowie WB! This is exactly like the DS game which is saying a lot because this is on an IPHONE. great job, very nicely done. My only problem is the dragging of the finger to control the characters. I would really like a D-pad or some sort of joystick controller because I, like many, am not a fan of dragging. Other than that this game is great, multitasking and retina display. Well done and please listen to my comment, I have been waiting all day for this app so I could be one of the first to get it.
Great game
ptgn123 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Graphics are great. Love the game play. Games well worth 5 bucks.
Awesome
JrzEuro 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
I haven't played too much but I will say this is the only game that I've thought interesting enough to write a review. The graphics are awesome as well as the music, followed then by how easy the whole game is to play. Can already tell I'm going to be hooked. Easy gameplay, great appearance, and the best story ever
Needs a D-Pad!
Hitch100 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
Great, amazing game with a ton of content in it, but the lack of a virtual D-Pad makes this game a pain to play. Moving to the bottom left corner works great, because it's working like a D-Pad. Moving up or to the right makes it so you have to cover a significant part of the screen. I only want one update, and it needs a D-Pad. Buy this game though. This is a great game in most ways and I want more like it. The End.
Fun and good looking, but...
alarming1 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
How the heck do I cast Wingardium Leviosa?! I've been trying for an hour now and it doesn't work!
No save game option
ChickyDunwoody 2.0 stars Version: 1.0
Thus game is really fun- but for people on iPhone who play games only for a few minutes at a time, the lack of a save game option is a huge oversight. When you choose to quit the game, you are not warned that progress will be lost.
Great, except doesn't work on iPad
BobYourUncle 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
I have 3.2.2, which is the current OS for the iPad, so this game won't even sync to my iPad. Works fine on my iPhone 4, however. The controls for moving the characters are horrible. I often have to move my finger above the character to move him, and then I can't see the screen. There's a double-tap move option, but that is also horrible. Would love to see a D-pad option.
Awsome
Alistaire34 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
I have the ps3 game but wanted this also. Great! Different enough to be a challenge. Only problem: its slow. Please send fix to speed it up. Thanks.
Not working with iPad?
The Annoyed gamer 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
What the hell? This should NOT be listed as an iPad app until it works on the frikiin thing. Shame on you Apple and WB. Bunch of crooks.
Won't Sync to the iPad because of iOS 4.1 or higher requirement
ABAP Freak 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
Although the application states that it supports the iPad and shows screens shots from the iPad, it won't actually sync to the iPad becuase the application requires iOS 4.1 or higher. Because Apple hasn't released iOS 4.x for the iPad yet, you can't actually play this game on the iPad. Hopefully the iOS update is comming soon for the iPad, but until then iPad owners are out of luck with this app.
Good but with one flaw
Mithrandir1 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
How do I save the game?
