This morning my Samsung II prompted me to update three social networking apps and because they are used by millions of users throughout the world, I decided to share the news with our audience. First of all, let me say that these are small updates, though we suggest you to “push the button” nonetheless to have the latest version of every app… Facebook got more messaging features like creating group messages and adding friends to existing group conversations, as well as shortcuts to share photos and messages right from your home screen. Moreover, the application was also updated with some under-the-hood tweaks, bringing improved performance and various bug fixes. The new version of LinkedIn for Android (2.4.1) also comes with improved performance and bug fixes, while allowing you to view your connections’ groups on their profile. Finally, StumbleUpon only got performance improvements and bug fixes (no new features). If for some Read More

First comes the new member of the stock exchange, which app got some handy new features, including: In comparison, LinkedIn’s app got a much smaller update, adding the ability to share profiles with anyone in your network or via email from any member profile. The "convergence" is what he's most excited about, and writing about it is the next logical thing to do. He thinks that using a smartphone is what everyone who cares about their time should do. Android software

Lately I’ve been asked which Android software I’m using so I directed a friend to “my 30 essential Android apps,” the post I wrote about two months ago. However, not everyone likes my list – they want something more structured. Then I prepared the “must-have Android apps” list which goes through different kinds of Android software, helping people decided what they need for what purpose. I went into details in that article and that’s also not that cool for everyone – so here’s something in between, a structured list of apps divided by categories. Browser(s) Social networking apps Mobile office client RSS & News IM & VoIP Utilities There you have it. Hopefully you’ll find something useful here. By Nathan Eddy on 2011-10-07 As the world teeters on the edge of a new recession, it is more important than ever to take a look around and see what your employment situation looks like. Although the U.S. employment rate remains stubbornly high (at or over 9 percent), the technology jobs market is actually faring much better than most other sectors. According to a recent report by Web-based IT hiring specialist Dice.com, there's a shortage of talent for a particular skill in every geographic section of the United States, and if novices are looking to break into the tech industry, there's also an accessible entry point—developing for Microsoft's .NET platform. In addition, the jobs report found the number of available tech jobs stood at 83,567, with 50,486 listed as full-time positions, 35,907 were contract positions, and 1,603 were listed as part-time positions. But where to find these jobs? Well, if you're the Read More
4 home screens of my Samsung Galaxy S II
Calendar16 Wed, 28 Sep 2011 08:47:25 UTC +00:00
Yesterday I talked about 30 essentail apps I installed on my brand new Samsung II. Today I want to share my home screens with you. As a productivity freak, I’m constantly trying to get more things done during the day and in that sense I organized my phone’s home screen, as well. The 4 home screens I’m using should reflect this… or so I think. Here are the apps and widgets I use throughout the day, hence they are promptly placed for quick access. Widgets: Apps: Apps: Widgets: Apps: Now I want to know how your home screen(s) look like. Which widgets and apps do you use? LinkedIn CEO Jeff Weiner explained on the company’s first earnings call a few weeks ago that the company is planning to make a big investment in its mobile strategy. Today, the professional social network is bringing a significant update to its mobile apps, including a new iPhone, Android and mobile web apps. LinkedIn Mobile is growing 400% year-over-year in terms of users, and LinkedIn says that because of this engagement, the company’s mobile apps needed to be tweaked to reflect a better user experience. The network has re-organized its iPhone and Android applications around 4 areas—Updates, Inbox, your profile, and groups. You could search for and access updates, your inbox, profile and connections from the previous versions of the iPhone and Android app, but the ability to browser and interact with your groups and add connections through LinkedIn’s ‘people you may know’ feature is new. So in the apps, which have Read More

Back in March, this next LinkedIn feature made itself familiar with the iPhone and the website version. It turns out that just recently, LinkedIn Today was announced for the Android app too. The product strives to be handy in the sense that it provides three social views for professional information at one place on the web. It includes news associated with users’ connections, industry peers and the wider professional group on the site. The aforementioned will help users stay updated with real time news which is accessible from the homescreen of the app. Just a click on the article will display a short summary and enable thorough reading if needed. Sharing of articles or sending it to others across the network is possible too. The ‘Read news by category’ section will allow access to a list of news areas followed, including the recommended news groups. A particular set can be followed Read More

LinkedIn, the business-oriented social network for professionals, is finally making a serious effort to satisfy the needs of its mobile users with the LinkedIn app for Android devices. LinkedIn is rather late to the Android party, as many other social networking apps like Twitter, Facebook, and TweetDeck are already well-established. But with this foray into Android territory, LinkedIn accomplishes the difficult task of providing a useful tool without sacrificing simplicity. All the functions of this app are accessible from the Home screen and, perhaps more importantly, they enable you to do most of the things you'd want to do with LinkedIn on a mobile device. You can view the details of your Connections, message them, or browse their Connections list to see who they know. You can browse Reconnect to see a list of people whom LinkedIn thinks you might know, but who are not yet Connected to you. When you Read More

Price: Free Pros Cons LinkedIn, the popular professional networking site, has finally released an official Android application. After being in beta testing with users for several months, the first official version is now available on the Android Market. A Weekly dose of what we think are the top apps of this week. LinkedIn is possibly the only social network for professionals, which has become popular all across the globe. Although the app for mobile platforms on iOS and Blackberry existed for some time the app was recently announced for the Android Platform. Something new to the application is the sharing aspect where now you can share news and information across facebook and twitter. it also allows you to share information among your contacts, making the network aspect of LinkedIn stronger. You can also access the profiles of your Read More

There are a lot of respectable mobile application for desktop services out there for iOS, Android, and others. Unfortunately a lot of these mobile apps don’t live up to the full potential of the desktop service. Earlier versions of Facebook mobile, for example,  excluded the chat feature present on the desktop version of the website. Today we’ll take a look at video look at version 1.0 of LinkedIn for Android. Does it live up to the capabilities of the desktop site?  Check out the video! LinkedIn app for Android now available
Calendar16 Fri, 08 Apr 2011 16:27:30 UTC +00:00
LinkedIn, the 'professional' social network, has finally launched an Android app. The app has previously been available in beta for a while. The final version includes support for messages, as well as a new Reconnect button, which suggests people you may know based on your profile and current connections. LinkedIn for Android obviously has all the features you'd expect, making it easy to connect with fellow LinkedIn users from your smartphone. The app lets you post status updates, view updates from your contacts, view your contacts' profiles, add new contacts, search for LinkedIn users (this can be either limited to your contacts, or it can go through the entire user base), and respond to invitations. LinkedIn expects to improve its Android app in future versions by adding some features that "have been heavily requested during the public Beta". Mirrors the new design of the mobile site. But.. I'll stick with the 1.x version, thanks. The APP mirrors the new design of the mobile website. And while the prior mobile website was more barebones than Craigslist, the new one is quirky and doesn't function well on my X10. If that's a hint to how this new 2.x app will work, I'll pass. The 1.x version is working perfectly fine, thank you.

gmail plus-character e-mail login doesn't work If you have a gmail plus-character login for filtering (foo+bar@gmail.com), the lastest update (2.0.1) doesn't work. You will have to log in as foo%2bbar@gmail.com. Their engineers suck. You should not have a sensitive password, because if login fails, they will log your attempted username and password. As an experiment, log in as "foo\+bar@gmail.com" with some bogus password. Then read your logs using aLogcat or "adb logcat". Your LinkedIn login is logged there for any other log-reading apps to see ...

I use LinkedIn heavily at conferences and at networking events to invite people to connect. The new update from 10/22 breaks the "Invite to Connect" function. Previously, you find person then invite. Simple. Now it adds a new form at the end. Add contact, then "send", but I was unable to add the contact (what does this field even mean?) and send the invitation. I used Titanium Backup to restore my old version of LinkedIn. Sad.

Maybe I'm just not seeing it, but I cannot for the life of me find a way to change the settings for this app. A quick look around other reviews makes me think there just isn't one. Who had that great idea? Planning to uninstall and just deal with Linkedin through the browser if I can't prevent this stupid app from spamming my phone with a week in review and whatever other alerts/invitations it thinks I care about (I don't).
ChristChild 0.0 stars
This app fails to do anything useful. LinkedIn could be a much better tool for networking proffesionals if it actually had an app that allowed you access to even 10% of what you can online. The app also freezes, is painfully slow and tries to force close randomly. Tablet support would be nice too but I know that is asking too much.

No Settings menu. Cannot customize app, cannot control notifications. It works the way the devs say it does, and you will use it the way the devs say you will use it, period. Maybe this is okay from a fringe app by a part-time guy, but from an outfit like LinkedIn, it's unacceptable. It feels like something they threw together because they had to have an Android app, and not something they thought much about before releasing. Uninstalled. Will just go back to the browser version.

Dear linked in... I know you basically created a web page within an app... but there is no reason you couldn't integrate link intents... why ... when I click on a linked in link it opens a webpage instead of your app?
Hannah 3.0 stars
I had to delete one star because when you try to add someone as a contact, it only works when it feels like it. Most of the time I have to actually go to the website in order to add a new contact. I had to delete another star because I can't edit my profile from the app. If I have to go to the site to do everything, why do I need the app?
Tony 1.0 stars
The LinkedIn app hardly works. If it does manage to load data, it takes an unreasonably long time. For the most part, it doesn't even load data so the screen stays blank. Pretty useless.
Darryl 3.0 stars
While the app has a fairly decent layout, functionality is a bit sketchy in some areas. Whenever I click on links contained in Linked In email updates I receive, I am routed to my internet browser instead of the LinkedIn app (despite any setting changes I make or how long I remain 'logged in'). Overall refreshing lags a bit long, sometimes confusing me on what is truly up to date. Messages I sent via the app sometimes do not actually send (verified by going to the actual website and not seeing a trace of the messages). HTC EVO 3D ~Dino

There seems to be no way to remove a connection from this app. Also, there seems to be no help to look it up in. AND it hijacks the website, so I can't even go there to use the remove feature. I was excited about this app, but those have ruined my experience.

Navigation requires a lot of backtracking. The "in" menu needs to be available at all times. LinkedIn closes and has trouble loading search results that I often have to pull out my laptop to browse instead of using my tablet. I am running the latest version of ICS on my Motorola Xoom. I would also like to be able to personalize my invitations. I make a point of always sending a personal invitation on LinkedIn and because of that, I am compelled not to use this app much.

Not too full featured like on the web but basic tasks work. Bring more features over to the Android app. How about NFC capabilities so I can connect with my recruiter by tapping phones. I do not get why such an app with such limited capabilities has such a high rating. If I click on an email in my inbox, it takes me to a web browser and if I am lucky I can login. Why on earth does linked in use so many permissions? I have lots of social apps and most don't require this many permissions. Could we may have a detailed explanation from you guys as the app is pretty limited.
John 1.0 stars
Not updating due to permissions. Linked in doesn't need -- and won't get -- access to my confidential data.
imurphy 2.0 stars
Not very slick for a company that has large market share and should be capable of better.

Lacks functionality such as STOP FOLLOWING A DISCUSSION. Then when you go to "Full Site", it kicks you back to the mobile app so that you STILL CAN'T STOP FOLLOWING A DISCUSSION. App actually creates wasted time.

I have been unable to use the feature of connecting with new people on this Droid app for LinkedIn. Seems everything else works. I am obviously connected or the other functions would not work.

I am very irked. I received an email about a post on a linked in thread in my email. Clicked it and got the full page "download the app." So I did and spent ten minutes trying to find that thread then the comment then I couldn't do anything with it. I wanted to flag it or something. Waste of time. I would not have reviewed or downloaded except that the web page basically forced me to.

Bill & Theresa 1.0 stars
Very limited functionality...which I am fine with in a phone app. However, they ask for more access than any app, even the most robust apps, should ever require. I love LinkedIn but am uninstalling this app. Scale back the permissions and data for which you "require" access and I will consider reinstalling.

The app seems incomplete. Either I am dumb, or the interface is not intuitive. Or both. I can't figure out how or where in the app to edit or modify my profile. The process of accepting a connection invitation was not what I would have guessed. Calendar access is NOT required! When you first log in, it asks if you want to sync contacts (all, existing or none) then it asks if you want to add a calendar - which you can just click the X in top corner if you don't want this. If you've already added it and want to remove, go to your profile and then click the gear/settings icon in top left corner and there is an option to add/remove calendar. I don't know how much I like the app otherwise, but I almost didn't install because so many crazy reviews.

Tries to grab my contact list and my calendar, then won't let me edit my own profile. There is a reason people stop using social apps...
Matt 4.0 stars
Why are people concerned about the requests? The first dialog box asks if you want to sync contacts your choice and just x out of the calendar.

Invite to connect doesn't work. Kind of defeats the whole purpose, you might think. Uninstalled. Samsung Galaxy Note.

LinkedIn, please remove the calendar upload "feature." Not sure why you think this invasion of privacy is a good idea. Please remove. Thanks.

The Linkedin mobile app has been extremely useful for connecting when I am on the move.

I love being able to have my LinkedIn contacts in my smartphone! Having their contact details handy 24/7 is a lifesaver! If I had to physically visit the site just to keep up with my industry and contacts, I know I wouldn't do it often enough.

The tablet app is nothing more than a blown up phone app. They were too lazy to create a tablet optimized app for Android. Also has intrusive app permissions.

Marry me If u want to break my privacy. Why should I allow u to access my personal data? Very poor. Shame.

Would be nice if this were more than just a fraction of the tools on website.

Would love the calendar if you gave us option to share a Public calender, not our personal one. I have more then one calendar too.

To all those enquiring about calendars, our tech support guys have a term that seems to fit the bill, PICNIC :) This is an ok app, not a great app, but ok. Allow me to fully edit my profile and I might change my opinion.

The app makes it possible for me to find and read articles shared on my network when I have moments of down time. Anything that helps me read more gets my vote. 5 stars when you take the calendar out.

This app will not allow you to read all of the comments with any discussion. Impossible to navigate between your groups. Not even close to resembling the look of the website. Bad planning, bad programming, bad app. It is a waste of my time and effort. Wish I could give it 0 stars.

can't even update your profile - except pic, weirdly - nor adjust my email notification settings. it's useful for syncing contacts since Verizon/Motorola suddenly dropped Accounts support for LinkedIn (for no apparent reason), but that's the only reason to have the app.

Interface is slick and easy to use. However, there is no way of editing my profile, nor searching for or joining groups. Improvement needed.

I used to somewhat like the app, then all of a sudden it stopped working. It doesn't like the fact that I won't update my phone contacts or calendar Invasion of privacy.

I read comments and decided to uninstall immediately. 2 reasons-calendar and dumping of linked in contacts to phonebook. Dislike!

App is limited compared to website but you DO NOT have to share your calendar! It's optional! .

You must add an options for the week in review. I have no use for that feature but do not want to turn all notifications off. Uninstalling.

Can't disable contacts sync so now I have a load of people that I don't really know in my phonebook. Thanks a bunch!
Petros 1.0 stars
It really does give you the option to remove it, but why should you have to do that? Why the heck does it publish it in the first place? LinkedIn has been pushing things too far lately. Guys, get serious!

Other than editing the profile, this a decent app. I would change a few things but that's not up to me. As for the calender, its an optional feature. I personally didn't add it.

Of course its not the full website. What it does is sync your linkedin contacts etc with your phone contacts. And gives access to a good subset of the website. Stop whining and use the app.

App doesn't really work, options are limited and when posting app won't let you, it marks as error, sorry but you need to work on that.
Mike 2.0 stars
Multiple connection errors and clunky navigation. Options are almost nill and you have a very limited range of settings. A nice feature is pics, phone #'s and such all link in your contacts list very well. If I didn't need LinkedIn for work, I wouldn't be using this app at all. A better marketing team should have caught this clunky app before releasing it.
Jake 1.0 stars
The app keeps giving me notifications that are not wanted. The worst part is there is no way to disable the app from giving them to you. I am therefore deleting the app and will not recommend it unless you are willing to deal with all the notifications.
