My 6 mobile productivity strategies for 2012
Calendar16 Tue, 03 Jan 2012 20:43:19 UTC +00:00
The last four years have shown remarkable growth in smartphone ownership, which has changed the mobile landscape. Prior to 2007, few folks had smartphones, and if they did, their handsets ran on PalmOS, Windows Mobile, Symbian or BlackBerry. These days, BlackBerry is still around, but stumbling, while Symbian is no longer a viable future platform. Instead, iOS and Android are the predominant players while Microsoft tries a second shot at this market with Windows Phone. I’ve used smartphone since before this shift and see both positive advances and new challenges. As a result, I’m rethinking my mobile toolset for 2012 using these ideas. In the early days of smartphones, having a great software solution was good enough. And for some, it still is. But the smartphone is becoming the tool of choice by a greater number of people each day, both at the family level and beyond. As a result, the Read More

Illustration by Michael ByersNavigating an app store can be tricky, with vague descriptions, dubious user reviews, and sometimes buggy apps. We searched for the best apps available. Locale$1 Locale lets you create location-based tasks. For example, you can have your phone turn on Wi-Fi when you get home, or have the phone silence itself when you get to work. It’s a great way to automate minor tasks, saving you a few extra minutes—and the embarrassment of having an overly noisy ringtone go off in the middle of a meeting. Head to Locale. SpringpadFree Create notes and reminders about movies you’d like to see, books you’d like to buy, or just events you’d like to remember. Springpad is also great for putting together shopping lists: You can quickly create checklists and scan barcodes to keep track of items you’ll need in the future. (Also optimized for tablets.) [The article has been reproduced from Appnomy, a site (and community) of App developers (India focused).] Androids are slowly but steadily making inroads into the enterprise market with phones that offer features that rival enterprise solutions offered by industry heavyweights like Blackberry. Some say that android cannot match-up to the strength of Blackberries and iPhones when it comes to productivity, but I am not convinced of that just yet. I have noticed how people absolutely love their Blackberries and iPhones and find it hard to go a day without them because of the features they offer to increase your productivity. Android app developers have realized the potential in the business and productivity applications that make life and work a lot easier and churned out some very interesting apps. These apps will transform your android device from an everyday phone to an automated digital assistant!! 1) Executive Assistant With the coming of Read More

Posted by Comments I’m really glad to see that my rant about Verizon the other day really hit home with a lot of people.  I got several emails regarding issues people have had with their phones and carriers.  Hopefully, carriers will start realizing who pays THEIR bills. Hi Nerdgirl, I love your column and was wondering if you could help me with a problem I have.  I have a rather limited data quota (3G is expensive where I live).  Lately I’ve installed many data hungry applications (all related to the world cup btw).  I use them mostly on Wi-Fi, but when I use 3G, I’ve noticed a big growth in the data usage, even when I close all of them.  I would like to know which app is using the network when it is not suppose to. Sure, I can uninstall each of them and check, but I rather not.  Do Read More

As Apple tightens the thumbscrews on potential app developers, manufacturers of Android phones lure developers with open arms and open-source. And it's working: by some reports, the Android Market is growing at a much faster rate than the ol' iPhone app store. But are the new apps worth their weight in code? Take Locale, for instance. It takes advantage of the multi-tasking that's built into Droid devices (but is only now on the slate for the next generation iPhone). Locale runs in the background, "monitoring conditions" that the user sets. You can set a condition called "Lady Gaga Concert - Awesome!": you plug a time frame or location into Locale, tell it how to make your phone behave (set ringer volume to high), and there you go! You can set a condition called "Weekly meeting," give Locale the time or location, and tell it to silence your phone's ringer. Pretty neat, Read More
The past year has been huge for Google Android, as the 2-year-old mobile platform has finally begun to gain some major traction.  As a result, Android has filled its Market with over 9,000 apps, creating an array of choices for smartphone users. The growth has attracted some apps that were already popular on the iPhone, and others that take advantage of Android’s unique features.  Here are some of the top Android apps I’ve found to be difficult to live without. EasyNote makes the list because of its multi-use capabilities. Create shopping lists, track daily tasks, or simply jot down your thoughts. Folders offer organization, while custom options make nearly every aspect of EasyNote able to serve your needs. Any note or list can be turned into a home screen widget, making for even easier access to your content. ShopSavvy’s free app was one of the first bar code scanners for Android, and Read More

Used to be great, now seems to be confused, constantly turning wifi on/off. :/
Brick 4.0 stars
Just as good as beta but rediculous price
Jeremy 1.0 stars
Great for turning off my ringer for class, but whatever I try Locale keeps turning Wi-fi on....beta didn't do this...
Caleb 1.0 stars
Not worth buying until fixed. Seems to get worse the longer I own it. Using Droid.
David 1.0 stars
Can not remember location and the phone leaves silent mode. And they call it 'Locale'. Very funny :( NOT. Also turns on WIFI by itself. PLEASE FIX
Shaun 1.0 stars
Support will call you cranky for asking for what the beta did. Tells you it is now impossible to do what the beta did. Support is quick, but arrogant.
Carlos 3.0 stars
Love what this app can do but I'm getting frustrated with how much it slows my phone down turning the wifi on and off. Fix please. 5 stars if do.
Winkyboy 5.0 stars
Upon purchase, multiple problems and DOES NOT WORK even after reboot. If uninstall to try reinstall, lose chance for refund. Love it, but is messed up
Rob 5.0 stars
First application to install, and no, I won't complain about the price. Open != Free.My current locale: Loc(Home), Time(Day), & Defalts. Perfect.
Marty 2.0 stars
Was great, now gives me problems, less features. I want the beta back, ive disabled it for now. And my money.
Dalton 3.0 stars
Great concept, but its not totally reliable. 10 bucks is too much. Plugins cost too.
Jonathan 3.0 stars
Consider my $10 an investment in future performance. Right now, this is just not up to scratch on my G1. looking forward to the future.
Avram 4.0 stars
Need an option to turn off blinking LED notification
Camel 1.0 stars
Buggy, freezes, force closes, does not update location. Does not work as advertised.
Andrew 4.0 stars
Tries to find location with wi-fi when any region is less than 2000 feet in size. Was draining battery, but this workaround has improved it.
Vanessa 1.0 stars
Used to work great as a Beta. Speant $10 and now its stuck on default all the time
Joseph 5.0 stars
unbelievable!!!
Stan2Reason 3.0 stars
Decent but significant problems with conditions defined by location.
Walt 3.0 stars
Not enough configuration options = very poor performance over time on Droid Eris
slim 1.0 stars
Location based situatuan is horrible, hardly ever jumps to correct condition...
Frank 4.0 stars
Great idea, but Locale never pinpoints my location correctly, even though Google Maps does it flawlessly.
Royalness 5.0 stars
Locale = Android > iDon't (and makes math fun!)
Shawn 1.0 stars

Isn't updating situations correctly with recent update.
Jacob 5.0 stars
Worth it
Julie 1.0 stars
Can anyone tell me why mine's not working?
David 3.0 stars
Amazingly powerful especially with all the plugins, but all the scanning comes with a price-much shorter battery life.
Ivan 5.0 stars
worth the $10
ebmarteu 5.0 stars
Excelent app!
Glownude 1.0 stars
Does not do as described! Worthless after beta. Obviously were not prepared or do not care.
Princessa 5.0 stars
Don't even have to worry about changing sounds to vibration. It's automatic.
Jonathan 4.0 stars
By far my most-used app. Reliable. Would be 5 star with more updates.
lr 1.0 stars
No feature updates, even simple, for months! Definitely not worth 10 dollars given the errors and missing features. Just buy SettingProfiles...
pauleyc 1.0 stars
The paid version is actually worse than the beta! Not saving profiles, more difficult to navigate than previous versions. Uninstalling and refunding.
Lamebirdy 4.0 stars
Any way you could implement a backup to SD card feature? Its a royal pain to figure out and setup again if you are forced to reset your phone's data.
z0mbix 5.0 stars
Great app on G1. A little pricey, but does the job and endless plugins to extend it.
Mike W. 4.0 stars
Excellent idea, but a little buggy. Some conditions don't work right in 2.2. Waiting for next update!
Ryan 5.0 stars
Before complaining about your battery life, check the battery usage in "About Phone." Locale and WiFi are accounting for less than 10% on my phone.
Jeffrey 5.0 stars
Hands-down the best Android app. A must-have for any professional who needs to keep the phone quiet at times.
Joe 2.0 stars
Dont waste your money, this app does not do what it says it will do.
John 5.0 stars
Easily the best app I have! So many uses and love the plug ins! Desire
GoWolfpack95 1.0 stars
Settings do not change in a reliable way when my location changes. It does not pick up the change any more, but it worked great back in feb-mar.
Shawn 2.0 stars
It cannot consistantly locate my position. I am in Montana and half the time it thinks I am in Texas. Not impressed.
Bill 1.0 stars
Doesn't work on Evo. Don't waste the money.
Cory 3.0 stars
Settings are nice but a huge battery drain. Even with gps, wifi and bluetooth off most of the time
Nick 4.0 stars
Works fine, just avoid setting actions based on a location condition. Everything else I've tried works consistently.
Matthew 1.0 stars
Worked for a couple of days then became unreliable. Switched to all in one solution - Tasker.
Dadical 5.0 stars
Works great with Screebl!
MeneM 2.0 stars
Location based services don't work correctly. It does not register location changes while on standby. I have to turn it on for it to notice i've moved
Peter 1.0 stars
Does not support any extra wallpaper set, including the simple app "Colors", which adds an option to the wallpapers/live wallpapers/gallery screen.
Tom 2.0 stars
Dead project?
Donny 3.0 stars
It's not perfect, but it does work for the most part.
Kenneth 1.0 stars
I paid $9.99 for an app that reboots my phone whenever I try to set a location! And this app is supposed to be the best on the market!?
Steve 3.0 stars
Turns off wifi when screen locks on incredible when wifi is setting. Also location greater than 2km or it uses wifi? Bad.
Kate 5.0 stars
Has saved me several times in just a month. Peace of mind and easy to use. Reliable app.
Lisa 1.0 stars
Wasn't bad when it was free-can't say the same when they charged. Did the opposite, rebooted phone, couldn't find locations. Chgd 2 Tasker, loving it!
Reid 2.0 stars
Love the program, but the location condition will not work on Froyo. HTC Evo
Nick 2.0 stars
It's a great idea, but not worth the money. If u set a single location boundary less than over a mile wide it will eat your batt turning WiFi on & off
Jeff 1.0 stars
this app does the opposite of what its supposed to do. causes more trouble then its woth
Tom 1.0 stars
Conditions don't save every time after making them.kills battery. Moto x
pauleyc 4.0 stars
App's back on track.
Michael 4.0 stars

Buggy.

Very spotty, and does not work as well as I thought.

Royalness 5.0 stars
Love it! The people using tasker have no idea how much more reliable, accurate, energy-efficient, easy-to-use and developed Locale is! ~Royalness
Paul 3.0 stars
Was ok until I found tasker... locale IS easier to use but much more limited and more expensive
Nancy 3.0 stars
I
Doug 5.0 stars
Really nice app that is simple and easy to use, makes phone behave itself.
Gibeon 1.0 stars
Way overpriced, I'd advice tasker instead.
Anon 2.0 stars
Not worth the price. Get Tasker instead. No need to buy stupid plugins to make it useful. Tasker is better and cheaper.
Nick 2.0 stars
I like the UI but the features just don't measure up to Tasker, uninstalled.
Johnny 1.0 stars
Too many problems to be usefull
Jason 1.0 stars
Simply cannot compete with Tasker, which is cheaper and does not need plugins for basic functionality. Tasker is also more stable!
BKuhn 3.0 stars
Too pricey
Brandon 1.0 stars
Sick of no real support. All I get from the devs are excuses. And I'm sick of paying extra for plugins. I'm going to go try the tasker 7 day trial.
Joshua 5.0 stars
Great app.... Definitely worth the purchase!!
Steve 3.0 stars
Turns off wifi when screen locks on incredible when wifi is setting. Tasker is harder to setup but has more functionality and is cheaper. Uninstalled.

Adam 1.0 stars
Doesn't work since I upgraded to froyo
Nick 2.0 stars
Tasker is 1000x better, install that instead.
Jake 2.0 stars
Paid $10 and my phone still went off in the movie. Works sometimes but not reliable.
Tim 2.0 stars
Drains my battery too fast. Used tasker with same plugins and doubled my battery life. Evo.
Brent 5.0 stars
A must have. The 1 app that I recommend to EVERYONE! Saves me the hassle of constantly changing settings. 10 stars!!!!
Pro 3.0 stars
Had this on Nexus One before but on Samsung Vibrant it keeps WiFi on all the time or lockups WiFi setting.
Finsternis 3.0 stars
Good, but Tasker is much more powerful and cheaper.
Andrew 4.0 stars
Great app.
Grim 3.0 stars
Like it a lot...just rly kills my battery...recently switched to tasker n like it a lot more
Mitchell 5.0 stars
Fantastic app.. Perfect for maintaining profile like settings on timers
Jim 5.0 stars
Excellent app. Tech support was very good-I had an issue with my settings for which they provided prompt and accurate assistance.
Charles 4.0 stars
Need ability to turn 3g on and off - critical feature to make app really usable
Aaron 1.0 stars
Brilliant business model. This is a platform for plugins, barely even a useable app. For ten dollars I was expecting more. Use Tasker instead.
Tyler 2.0 stars
Improve efficiency and then we'll talk.
Andy 4.0 stars
The 1.0 release was slow and buggy but its been fine since the latest updates
Anthony 1.0 stars
Brilliant idea, but doesn't seem to work even when the app is set to change settings at a certain time rather than location. Droid incredible w/ 2.2
Rob 2.0 stars
If you only use location and time settings, works ok. Found it was somehow preventing my camera from turning on. Uninstalled. HTC Incredible.
Jason 3.0 stars
I wish it was not such a battery hog....my phone lasts 6 hours with it active...d.inc
Rob 3.0 stars
Doesn't seem to work with froydvillain 1.5. Drains battery.
Mike 2.0 stars
Would be good if it wasn't so CPU/memory intensive.
Andy 4.0 stars
I tried to stick with this, especially as I coughed up the $10 dollars, but Tasker does seem better vallue.
aspitzer 3.0 stars
I have moved to tasker because it supports far more actions/events which are included with it.
Jamie 4.0 stars
I love the application, but it still needs work. Situations don't always turn on reliably and for the price I think all the plugins should be free.
Edward 4.0 stars
Good program, but expensive. Plugins are essential to getting full functionality.
Rob 2.0 stars
Loction is still hit or miss... I'm a school teacher & unfortunately, 7 out of 10 times Locale doesn't know I'm at school. I have to manually adjust.
Guy 5.0 stars
Excellent app. Great idea. Works perfectly for me most of the time. Depends on network connection.
Daniel 5.0 stars
Could not live without it!
Viscosious 3.0 stars
So you invented this app because a judge flipped his lid in court? Where you in that courtroom? You charge too much fr this app. Its very buggy.
Cheryl 3.0 stars
Sometimes quits working. Will be great app when bugs are fixed.
Paul 3.0 stars
Locale is like basic mode...real basic. Tasker is advanced mode and all the features are already there without the need for extra paid plugins.
Brent 4.0 stars
The beta worked fine for me. Bugs in 1.0.6 prevent locale from detecting that I changed locations. Save your money until it works
Simon 5.0 stars
Easier to use than the other ones.
Austin 3.0 stars
For 10 dollars it lacks the ability to accuratly find my location wich makes the app essentially useless...
Tom 2.0 stars
when was the last update again? Moto x
Cagra 3.0 stars
Tried to stay with Locale because I shelled out 10 bucks for it, but can only agree with people recommending Tasker instead.
Joe 4.0 stars
Exportable/importable rules! Pleeeeease! I support Locale's 100 different modules - help me re-input all of my rules instead of remembering and retypi
matt 5.0 stars
I like locale one of my favorite apps i think the developer should make more free plugins considering the price of the app ..
Yuri 3.0 stars
Good but too expensive. Have to agree that Tasker does it all including plungin functionality and more for cheaper
Dan 3.0 stars
Refunded. Would be a good app if there were more options. I would gladly buy if there is a good update.
jesse 3.0 stars
Not worth the money. For 10$ it should be spot on every time. However it is more like 50/50.
Michael 4.0 stars
Love this app just 2 things keep it from 5 stars. First location is not 100% stable loses it then gets it back in a min. Second is Wifi same issue.
Hasan 5.0 stars
Don't listen to all these people, this app is perfect.
Yoav 4.0 stars
Why isn't there an option to backup/restore settings and profiles? Moving to Tasker, sorry..
Shane 5.0 stars

eric 5.0 stars

Josh 4.0 stars
Locale is a dream to use and will make your phone sing & dance.
Shelby 5.0 stars
Been using Locale + the GPS plugin for years w/ excellent results. Probably my most-used app tho I rarely even think about it. Responsive dev, too.
Scott 4.0 stars
I HATE that icon that was added. Pleaese remove
MMFeduccia 5.0 stars
Wonderful app. Keeps my phone quiet when it needs to be. I use the calendar plug-in to control volume based on my class schedule.
Skylar 3.0 stars
new version is buggy. Dev is rude in feedback forums.
Droid 5.0 stars
No Android phone is complete without this app!
Ian 5.0 stars
Abandoned? Expensive but good. Needs greater granularity in location and location poll timing options.
Matt 3.0 stars
Doesn't work on DroidX (ver 2.1 or 2.2), but interface is really good
Mr. Fantastic 1.0 stars
if it wasnt for Locale Location Plugin (nongps) this thing would be useles. this app had 5 stars yet u decided to not support it in 1.3 . LAME. WHY??
Yuri 3.0 stars
Good but too expensive. Have to agree that Tasker does it all including plugin functionality and more for cheaper
Michael 3.0 stars
Has gotten better, but still wish i didnt buy it.
Anonymous 2.0 stars
They say after 1.3 they are to work on Twitter again. Believe it when I see it
Janis 4.0 stars
Loved it on my G1. Got a Vibrant w more RAM, decided to give Tasker ($4 w $20 of plugins included) a try instead. Haven't looked back!
Justin 1.0 stars
Sounds like a great idea but in practice pretty useless since most of the things you can turn off with the profiles you need switched on
T 3.0 stars
Location option doesn't work... the one option I wanted doesn't work... waste...
realcodeguy 1.0 stars
Completely unreliable. Save your money. Samsung captivate.

Lukas 5.0 stars
Usability is everything to me. There is no learning curve for this app. I love it.
Joey 4.0 stars
I loved this app, then I found Tasker. It does everything Locale can plus much much more.

$10 is pretty steep. Lost all my settings. Annoying taskbar icon, make an option to enable/disable for task manager users. Beta was flawless.
Chris 2.0 stars
Sucks battery down fast. Too expensive and after you get whacked for ten bucks then you get to pay extra to add plugins that are standard on tasker.
Graeme 3.0 stars
The range of events is too small. It needs to add access attempts and a lost stolen mode please

Makes my Moto Droid really sloooow.

Pretty cool app, but has its flaws... the price being the biggest.

had the CORRECT SETTINGS.. but still went off at work

Only app I have that has regressed with each update. Uninstalled... too bad it's too late for me to get a refund. Save your money.

I hate this app. Paid plugins. Crap developers. Bad customer service. Get "settings profiles" for a better experience.

Notification icon remains. Why?
Matt 4.0 stars
Great app in and of itself, but the app is $10, and then it's another $1 for some of the plugins which should be available out of the box.

NO IT DOES NOT WORK! AS THEY HAVE NOT PROGRAMMED ANDROID 2.1 SHOCKING They say after 1.3 they are to work on Twitter again. Believe it when I see it.

Stop working correctly. Phone rang in the middle of the day at work. Can't count on this to cover me.

Please remove the icon on the notification bar. Or at least give us a choice.

Long affair with Tasker now over! Back to Locale. It just works. Too pricey. If I'm still using it on my Nexus Three I'll consider it good value.

Time based schedules work great. Drains my battery in less than a day since update. Disabled for now
Spiralout112 3.0 stars
Overpriced, constantly leaves yet another un needed icon in the taskbar, rarely works, my wifi is never turned on at work or home.
Benoit 2.0 stars
Last update used all my battery in 4 hours. N1.

Beta was awesome. Used it for everything. Now, just plain sucks. It takes 3 or 4 tries to actually save a scenario, and half the conditions dont work.

Very useful but be prepared to buy a ton of add ons. Without them, this software is useless. I think over spent an extra $10 already..
Aled Wyn 4.0 stars
It seems to drain the battery more since latest update

Works like a charm! @erin thats what the default profile is for, or if you want it to be different everytime there are plug-ins for that

Worth the money. Works good. No problems on Samsung galaxy s.

Doesn't change location This app doesn't track location as advertised. Despite spending hours in specified location, app never came off the defaults. Not worth paying for.

Not doing what advertised for me Will not follow set schedule. HTC inspire.

Update force closes immediately Version 2.0 crashes upon starting service. Disabling default condition doesn't help. HTC Glacier with 2.3.4.
Roine 4.0 stars
Works perfectly! Tested for two days with 3 profiles. 1. Turn on wifi when home. 2. Turn off notification sounds from 22-06. 3. Lower ring signal at work.

AudioManager plug-in broke 2.0 release seems to have broken AudioManager plug-in which has more functionality than Locales volume settings.

Great App! A great app with lots of extendability. Would be even better if it had graphical notifications.

Low on space Get error on start. Low on space. 8gb free on ad, mem is ok and so is internal storage. Stick to tasker, much better.

Satisfactory and really helpful If you have parameters like gps location and the gps is disabled, it gets a little weird!
Katie 1.0 stars
Nope... Far as I can tell, nothing changed about the GPS capability.

Great app. one addition would be to allow multiple time settings for each locale, especially when I'm home.

Wi-Fi won't turn off It is an excellent app except that it could not turn Wi-Fi off on my Samsung Galaxy Plus.
Zack 3.0 stars
Plug in n Plug that .. Locale has a nice interface, but its troublesome to look for plug ins that should be in built into the app. Plus Locale costs around 4.99 and I still need to pay for a headphones plug-in that adds to the cost. Its a great concept but there are other programs which do a better job without having to pay for the app. Llama is much better and free!

@nikki: Locale contains no ads whatsoever. You have the wrong app.

Disgusting!! My 4 yr old was coloring on this app when an inappropriate ad came on the bottom and she touched the screen taking her to an ad for discreet encounter

Simple enough and powerful enough I tried Tasker (too complicated) and Timeriffic (not flexible enough) and then I found Locale, which its the perfect balance of usability and power.

Awesome app & dev Does exactly what is says on the tin. Locations work well - just make sure you're outside when setting locations for best accuracy. Helpful dev too.

Needs notification Needs notification modification.

Disappointing For the price I expected more. No built in airplane mode, and the extension you can get looks to be malware. Be careful.

Drains battery Must charge battery in the afternoon. Unacceptable!

Annoying notification Good stuff, but a constant notification that I can't get rid of makes it pretty average. Make the notification an option.

Location issues 2.0.1 worked really well with location based actions. 2.0.2 broke them. My phone ended up making noise in class because of the update. Would be really nice to be able to download previous versions. Droid 3.

Great program Provides exactly what it says. Saves battery and very handy when you forget to set settings on a regular basis.

Not verry accurate at changing modes once I get to a certain place, slows my phone down to a noticable level also. Unnisntalling :p

A keeper and a saver A saver of battery by automatically turning off what's not needed. A saver of embarrassment by silencing when at work. A saver of face by reminding.

Wow Useful app but trying to make me pay 4 bucks for the update after I paid 10 for the app? Really?!?
Alan 4.0 stars
Great! But I paid $10 for the apparently, why another $3.99?
Shaun 1.0 stars
Inaccurate / Drains battery Don't waste your money. The location based actions don't work well. Keeps on switching WiFi on. Actions are limited.
