Best Apps For Finding A Place To Eat
Calendar16 Mon, 01 Mar 2010 22:49:03 UTC +00:00
By Chris Hall on March 1st, 2010 Here are the four best apps for finding a place to eat, brought to you by the never ending hunger of Chris Hall. I’ve been hungry lately. Real hungry. Some hunger is conquered by Chipotle, but this hunger is only has one weakness, and it is good, local food. Fortunately for all of us in the same situation, there are plenty of apps for that. Here are the four best, brought to you by the never ending hunger of Chris Hall. 4. Yelp – I really like Yelp when I’m looking for a place to eat. Because of its vast user base, the Yelp app provides more restaurants per search than any other app I’ve found. There are also more customer review on Yelp than any other service, so if you believe that more is better, Yelp is for you. The problem with Yelp Read More

Nice app. Memphis is right on...
flagpond 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
I like the app - very clean and simple to use. My faves in Memphis are surprisingly in there. Cool map and near me feature. I'd recommend this those who avoid chain restaurants - like me.
Hesitant, but now I love this app
4x4Adventures 5.0 stars Version: 1.2.5
I bought this because I live in one of the featured cities and even for 0.99 cents I was hesitant. I visited their website and found it very complete, so I bought it and WOW, I didn't realize how many hidden gems I find here. For the most part the results are spot on, what a good resource. Looking back knowing what I know now, even if I did not live in one of the covered cities but thought I would visit one somtime, I'd buy it. They seem to support it with updates, nice interface and for 0.99 cents what are you waiting for?
This is easily the best of the retaurant apps
DaveDeF 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
I travel a bunch, and have now tried the restaurant recommendations in a few of the highlighted cities. Visited two nice restaurants in Louisville last week. What I like best is that there are really not many chain places. We like to sample different styles, from diners to upscale, and this app organizes everything by category which makes it easier to experiment.
Great app 4 foodies
Elvepe 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
Just used this to find a good restaurant for lunch today in NYC. Easy to use and helps you find what you are looking for based on your location. Thumbs way up. Can't wait to try it out in other cities.
Useful and Easy
miktootall 5.0 stars Version: 1.2.5
After reading some of the reviews on this app, I was a little hesitant, but since I DO live in one of the markets and travel a lot, I thought I would see for myself. This app is right on. Easy to use, sort by category, and I even called to get reservations last night with the touch of one button. My wife likes that you can see the websites for the restaurants too (she likes to check out the menu before we go somewhere). I would've paid way more for something this useful. Thanks!
Better than the rest
BHeywood 5.0 stars Version: 1.5.0
I love this application! Clean, well designed navigation and great restaurants - what's not to love? Some of the other reviewers seem to have a bit of trouble reading before they purchase. It says "Top 50 Cities"!! Then it lists the cities. Why do so many of you purchase, then complain it does not have your city?? If you do live in one of the cities listed (like Seattle, like I do) then it's worth $0.99...lots more actually.
Well done
SDMichael 5.0 stars Version: 1.2.0
The San Diego listings are great -- I found a great sushi place just 2 miles from my home that I didn't know about before. The best rated restaurants in the app are also restaurants that locals think are the best. A really seamless and nicely functioning app.
Works great
nashpipe 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
I've been using this for a couple of days and it is the best food app I've found. Great recomendations for the Nashville area and it has a intuitive interface.
Handy, pretty slick!
Drewmon 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
Grabbed it today and found a lot of places to try where I live. Very cool app. This will rock for traveling!
batting 1000
miccotech 5.0 stars Version: 1.5.0
This app led me to some great little hole-in-the wall restaurants that I never would have set foot in otherwise. From a noodle shop in Chinatown to an Italian place uptown, this app hit a home run on every recommendation I tried in NYC.
Foodie
Jch1933 5.0 stars Version: 1.5.0
As a foodie, winemaker and vineyard owner, this application directed me to some fabulous restaurants, the "local favorites" are wonderful. I love it! I just had the best middle eastern food since London. I would have never have found it!!
Far better than expected
barshnik 5.0 stars Version: 1.2.5
After trying most of the other programs of this genre, I wasn't expecting much. BTW, this is the first app I've seen fit to review from the 40 I've bought / installed. This one really works to find great restaraunts.
Worth a spot on your app list.
HuskiePJN 4.0 stars Version: 1.3.0
This application is great for the average person. The listing of restaurants seems to be the critics favorites more than the locals. However, I still found many restaurants in the Dallas/Fort Worth area that were fantastic that I never knew about. Overall, this application is easy to use and worth $0.99. It may be missing a few of the local favorites, but will still prove to be a great a tool.
Meaty app. Delicious results.
luizdaMan 5.0 stars Version: 1.5.0
I like this app very much. I recently traveled to Miami for a conference and a friend had LocalEats on her iPhone. Over 4 days, it pointed us to several outstanding restaurants. Now that I'm back from my trip, I purchased it for my own phone. I'm glad Dallas is one of their cities, and look forward to using often.
The best restaurant-finding app
JeffPaine 4.0 stars Version: 1.5.0
The only complaint I have about this app is that unless you live in one of the supported cities, it's pretty much useless. Even if you do live in a big city, the app won't help you at all if you're travelling somewhere smaller, which is why I recommend keeping a backup app like Urbanspoon on your iPhone as a backup.
I like it.
aManCalledChase 4.0 stars Version: 1.5.0
nice tool when you are hungry and can't decide. just pop open and search by category, or click near me. really nice job. it combines two things i really like, electronic toys and food.
Great Application When...
ooartist 5.0 stars Version: 1.6.1
... you are in the cities they have restaurants for. I travel frequently. I recently used this application in Atlanta, and Raleigh. It gave me a nice selection of restaurants to pick from. The only catch is don't expect it to give you many restaurants if your not in the cities it supports. The thing I like most about this application is it truly is a guide to good restaurants instead of just a list of every restaurant around.
Love this for DC restaurants! A "TOP FIVE APP" on iphoneappadvisor (dot) com!
DCFoodie 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
We dug into this app for our website review, and found it to be the best among all restaurant-finding apps. With just a few taps, we located some great restaurant "finds" in the DC metro area. Don't let the fancy fork fool you -- these selections aren't necessarily the most expensive or fancy. Rather, they seem to be the best places that locals like to eat, by category. So fancy is there if that's your thing -- but so are out-of-the-way amazing BBQ joints, red-hot sushi bars, local taverns with the best burger, etc. If you've got an iPhone and don't want to carry this book around, don't leave home without this app. Great use of GPS features on iPhone. Really, really, freaking cool.
Dining Out Is Fun Again
Hungry Mama 5.0 stars Version: 1.3.0
Thanks to LocalEats, we'll never again find ourselves driving around aimlessly on a Saturday night in search of that perfect—and utterly elusive—date spot. The Near Me feature is manna enough, but to simply touch a button to call a restaurant, see its website or get directions is a busy yuppie's bonanza. I will recommend this application to everyone I know from East Coast to West. Thanks.
Thanks!
wrightm 5.0 stars Version: 1.2.0
Great app! I use it all the time..and it's only $0.99!!
Buy this app now!
BimmerJMG 5.0 stars Version: 1.2.5
Great intuitive user interface combined with spot on restaurant recommendations. I know the Dallas restaurant scene very well and can attest to the excellence of these recommendations. Looking forward to trying many new restaurants in L.A.
Pretty cool!
CDollFace 4.0 stars Version: 1.5.0
This is a pretty cool application! I can't wait to put it to GOOD use on my next trip!
So cool
jbrizz 5.0 stars Version: 1.3.0
Downloaded this and got on a plane to Houston for a work trip. Looked up Katy (suburb) and found 60 restaurants. Picked one labeled Best Mexican (Pico's). It was EXCELLENT with a big selection of tequilas :-) My colleague and I had a fantastic meal in a city we don't know.
Love this app!
Pistol Pete 32 5.0 stars Version: 1.2.5
I had urbanspoon already, but thought for a buck, I should try out this one as well. Absolutely love it! More of a "guide" than just a listing of restaurants...Found many of my favorite restaurants on Raleigh's list and can't wait to use it in more cities. It's nice to have an app that actually leads you to the "best" restaurants, not just the ones nearby.
Great App!!
Buddha88 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
This is a great app -- for locals and travelers. And it's gorgeous too!
Great App for Great Eats!
Greg Thurman 5.0 stars Version: 1.2.0
Awesome! Easy to use...Great recommendations! Used it twice in Kansas City, MO and was very happy with the results.
Spot on reviews

This app works well. Easy to use and friendly.
Great app

It's a great application. Need to add some waiting notification when it's loading information.
Good app
Jefferson Tibbs 5.0 stars Version: 1.3.0
Like I said it's a good app and only a dollar!
Great app
Jwstars 5.0 stars Version: 1.7.0
This is an excellent app! My husband and I often use it to find new restaurants. It only lists local places and no chains!!! It's great!
Foodies should get this app!
ChzHeadBanger 5.0 stars Version: 1.7.0
I love this app. Its well designed and is chocked full of Milwaukee's best. Been using several months and it's become one of my favorite apps. Be aware, this is not a comprehensive listing of all restaurants everywhere. They seem to be more selective than other dining apps - choosing only the best local places. This is what I really love about this app...I want to see the good stuff. I would recommend to those who consider themselves foodies!
Local Eats is Superb!
Catchersmitt 5.0 stars Version: 1.7.0
I have found some of the BEST establishments using this app.
I really like this app. Works in the North and the South!
Huck Shelton 5.0 stars Version: 1.7.0
I live in Detroit and travel to Atlanta twice a month. It has proved itself in both cities. I like it cause a man's gotta eat. Note: Someone gave the app one star because it does not include Cleveland. Ugh, dude...yes it does. It's under "C" for Cleveland, not "O" for Ohio...just a tip.
Works Great!!! **MUST BUY***
victor Tight Pants 5.0 stars Version: 1.7.0
I noticed when I first looked at this App, that there were a lot of one star ratings, so I was unsure if i should get it. so I did, cause there would good reviews for this app too, and im glad I got it! plus it's only $0.99! so it's a good deal!
Wow! This is a great app.
BHeywood 5.0 stars Version: 1.7.0
I don't like chains. I avoid them at all costs. This app features only local establishments - even better - good local establishments. I'm a Birmingham native and their choices are great. If they are as mindful in other cities, I can wait to try it out when I travel. I love the "near me" feature too.
I like it. Would recommend to all.
aManCalledChase 4.0 stars Version: 1.7.0
Nice tool when you are hungry and can't decide. Just pop open and search by category, or click near me. really nice job. it combines two things i really like, electronic toys and food.
A Wonderful Finder of Great Eats
Ric79 5.0 stars Version: 1.7.0
Purchased this wonderful app for use on the Original iPhone with OS2x; worked like a charm. I live in the Baltimore area and I've been pointed to more, previously unknown to me, local eateries than I ever knew existed! I received the new 'iPhone 3G S' along with OS3x on Friday, 6/19; this app worked perfectly on the new iPhone, right out of the box. Was in New Orleans last week for a conference and this app pointed me to some of the best local eateries for both breakfast and dinner; I'd have never found many of them on my own.
This app is always 'near me'
Hungry Mama 5.0 stars Version: 1.7.0
Love it, love it. Was in Manhattan on a business trip, hit the 'near me' button and found some great dining options. To my amazement, you've also got wonderful restaurant recommendations in my hometown of Toledo, Ohio. Thanks.
Great travel app! Works great on my new iPhone...love it!!
Frank Nacilo 5.0 stars Version: 1.7.0
I am in packaging sales and travel quite a bit. LocalEats has been great find - choosing a place to eat is no longer a crapshoot. I've used in Pittsburgh, Denver, Chicago and Indianapolis - so far it has done a great job.
Very, very good app.
Koji Tsutsui 5.0 stars Version: 1.7.0
I've been living in Portland for a few months and app has turned me on to really great places. For 99 cents it's a steal. Thank you.
Pleasantly Surprised
DrFunkhole 5.0 stars Version: 1.7.0
I thought this app was just for 50 big cities in the U.S., but on a recent trip to California not only did it lead me to a couple of really amazing restaurants in San Francisco, but I tried it out in Morro Bay. There were only two listings, but I got the best meal of my entire trip at the place I went to. I also got several listings in Santa Barbara. I wish I'd had time to try one of them.
Top Notch App.
Brother Will 5.0 stars Version: 1.7.2
This is a good app. It's well organized, simple to use, and full of great restaurants. If you live in one of the 50 cities, buy it. If you don't - don't purchase it then complain. Also, the price is right and works just dandy on 3.0!
