Three New App-Loaded iPhone Ads Hit Prime Time

It’s fall premiere season, and that means new shows. But it also means sparkly new ads to fill all those commercial breaks. New Apple ads for the iPhone provided pleasant relief for me yesterday from the tedium of the two-hour Heroes premiere. On a side note, the Castle premiere was pretty good. But back to those commercials. All three highlight popular and unique iPhone apps, some of which have already been featured in previous commercials. Let’s take a look at the apps featured in each commercial. The first ad is called Dine and features a smattering of apps covering a range of different topics, including travel, dining, working and shopping. Here’s a breakdown of the apps featured. TripCase (Free) — Flight tracking, info and travel itinerary management app. Quite a few not so great reviews on this one, but it is free. New York Subway 09 ($4.99) — Navigate the labyrinth Read More
Were you watching the two-hour season premiere of House last night on Fox? Maybe you were watching one of the other prime-time shows, but if you had your eyes on the screen during some of the commercial breaks, you probably saw at least one of the three new iPhone ads that hit the airwaves last night. Each of the new ads highlights a total of six apps, up from the three that were formerly the focus of the older ads. The first ad I saw last night, "Dine," looks at Zagat to Go, QuickOffice, TripCase, New York Subway 09, Epicurious Recipes & Shopping List, and Gap Style Mixer. [Note: all app links will open the iTunes App Store] I'm happy to see that Apple is maintaining focus on the number and variety of apps in the App Store, instead of resorting to the narcissistic, touchy-feely, celebrity-filled tripe that T-Mobile has been Read More

Fantastic Application
小罗 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
There are lots of useful phrases broken out into categories and a nice search function as well. The phrases are shown in pīnyīn, 汉字, and also spoken in a clear and easy to hear voice. If you are studying Mandarin, or taking a trip to China, I think this application will be helpful for you (it is for me).
Not bad, could be better

As someone who's studied Mandarin, I was really excited to see that this Lonely Planet guide was available for free. The layout of the app is really nice. Searching is well done and fast, and the inline translations are very convenient. Having spoken audio is really the killer feature here. Unfortunately the quality of the audio is a bit poor (probably to keep file size down). Additionally, 600 or so phrases is not nearly enough for doing much more than basic survival communication. If the audio quality were improved even marginally, and the number of phrases doubled (perhaps by including basic nouns, like food words), I'd be very inclined to spend money on this app.
It does what it's supposed to
Gunadic 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
It works well enough to get around. Some of the phrases are a little rushed, but you can generally get the idea.
So cool!
iLoveMyPhone 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
This is a GREAT application! And it's free :-) I love that it not only says the phrase (native chinese speaker) but it also has the phrase written in classic chinese characters and in romanization. The phrase is read at normal speaking rate so it may seem fast to beginners (like myself). I think it's great that the speaking is at a normal rate though. You could easily show someone the phrase and let them listen to it if they don't understand you. This is perfect for travel! I love it! Thank you Lonely Planet!
No audio?

Pretty useful and best of all free!
Updated to new version - volume still too low
xlr8yourmac.com 3.0 stars Version: 1.1
Love this free app but even after updating (and installing iPhone software 2.0.1) the volume is very very low (hard to hear without earphones even w/iPhone volume at max)...
Cool
Andyvander 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
I also think it would be sweet if they had this app for Japanese
Great app and it's free
Rlsm14 5.0 stars Version: 1.1
Since I am in Beijing to watch the Olympic games with my family this app has extremely helped me and my family so far during our visit so I hope that next time I go to Beijing I still have my iPhone with me.
HELP!

How useful!
Nice app.
SolarArch 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
This is a very nice app. Although some of the pronouncations seem a little bit off, this program is very nice. Good for quick reference. I can't wait till someone makes some real language learning software for the app store!
Audio sampling bitrate too low
Waarki 2.0 stars Version: 1.0
The audio phrases seem to be sampled at a bit rate too low so that words are garbled and unclear. Even being familiar with Mandarin I had repeatedly listen over and over. I removed this app ASAP as I consider it fairly worthless. I hope the pay versions are better.
Very good
Bacillus 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
It is pretty good, though I'd like to see a phonetic spelling in there as well. One humorous error, the word for man is actually the word for toilet
One Useless Phrase
Psmythe 3.0 stars Version: 1.1
You see this too often in a language book: "Do you speak English?" in the target language. If you say it in English and they understand it, then they do. If they don't understand it (in English) then they don't. Why would you need to say it in Chinese (or Japanese... or Spanish... or...)?
shi! [yes in chinese!]

i really like the app. and i would love to go to china! [im from PR] but i don't know how to reach the search to ask fo specific phrases.. could someone tell me how! thank you!
Great tool! Very helpful on my trip.
yesh! 4.0 stars Version: 1.1
I used the phrasebook a few times when I entered a shop were people didn't understand english in shanghai. I would just point or play it and they'd immediately understand. Some small adjustments could make it better.
Neat for business travel
jw20000 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
The pronunciation for Men needs to be corrected. It is the same as Toilets.
Good
SpinoC666 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
I wish the audio wasn't as fast and crackily. Other than that it is great! I want one for Japanese now
Mandarin
Hairyjoe1 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Shows English, Pinyin, Mandarin characters and decently pronounces the Mandaran. I could have used this sitting in the back of a Beijing taxi and playing the recording from my iPhone.
All quite good
Quacker Oatmeal: Yum Yum! ♥ 4.0 stars Version: 1.1
speaking from the point of view of a native speaker (it was the first language I ever learned. i barely knew any english until i was about 6), these are all very accurate. but the guy speaking has a very monotone voice. in chinese, the tones make the words what they are. if you don't say it right, someone could perceive it to mean something entirely different. but other than that, the phrases are accurate and formal enough to use with elders and officers. very great for a tourist and for pure fun, but for any other reason, say, living in china or a long term visit, i suggest a professional interpreter or learn the language itself.
Freskin sweet

I love this application. It is very useful when I go to Beijing. Hate to complain but it does need something that makes it slower... Great app!!!
san bruno review of the lonely planet vietnamese phrasebook
san bruno = idiot 5.0 stars Version: 1.1
san bruno, you're obviously an idiot! miss little sunshine has either been to vietnam or intimately knows the history and culture of the country, or she is a proud (non-communist) Vietnamese American living here in the U.S. Geez, if there's one thing i hate in this world, it would be idiots!
EXCELLENT!!!
I'm a freakin' App junkie! 5.0 stars Version: 1.1
This is free-- thank you for your generosity! One option that would be nice would be the capability to slow things down a drop so we can learn Mandarin pronounciation. Thank you so much!
Great, but...
GrahamFreeman 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
the audio for "men" is the same as the audio for "bathroom". oops!
Awesome
The Forbidden One 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
I've been looking for a program like this to learn some Mandarin and I found it. Would highly recommend it!
