Loopt Updates Mobile Apps, Brings LooptPulse To BlackBerry
Calendar16 Wed, 07 Apr 2010 23:25:43 UTC +00:00
Jason Kincaid currently works as a writer at TechCrunch. He grew up in Danville, California and later relocated to UCLA in Los Angeles, California, where he studied biology with a minor in ‘Society and Genetics’. You can reach him at jkincaidtc@gmail.com (he has other addresses too, so don’t worry if you have a different one). → Learn More Location-based social network Loopt has just updated its iPhone and BlackBerry applications, adding a hybrid map feature that allows you to view a single map (seen at right) that plots nearby points of interest, friends, and events all at once. The new update also brings LooptPulse, which the company has already launched for the iPhone and iPad, to the BlackBerry. LooptPulse, which was first announced last fall, is Loopt’s discovery feature. If there are a lot of Loopt users checking in at a nearby event or restaurant, the service will recommend it to Read More
With SXSW starting Friday in Austin, Texas, every location-based service out there is right now finalizing updates that they hope will be the one that gets them used more than all the others. Loopt, is betting on events integration. The latest version of the app, due to hit the App Store tomorrow will feature a new Pulse tab. Here you’ll find events populated from a ton of sources including the live music tracker SonicLiving (SXSW is first and foremost a music event, after all) and most notably, Facebook. This pre-population is important, because it means the events will already be in the system so users won’t have to do anything other than share it with friends, or check-in if they’re going. The feature also uses you current location to show which events are happening around you at any given moment that a lot of people are at. As you might expect, you Read More
Loopt Shifts Its Strategy To Tap The Pulse Of Location
Calendar16 Tue, 03 Nov 2009 21:17:48 UTC +00:00
When Loopt launched in 2006 it was ahead of a curve that is just starting to be recognized: Location. Now, with services like Foursquare, Gowalla, Brightkite, and even Twitter fueling the location-based services frenzy, Loopt realized that it needed to shift its strategy a bit. Enter Pulse, a new feature launching today. Previously, Loopt was more of a passive service — you started it up on some device and it kept track of where you were. Other users could see where you were if they opened the app too, but generally it wasn’t about pinging your friends to let them know where you are and what you were doing. But Pulse makes Loopt much more of an active service. It recommends hot places, hot events, and lets you know what your friends are up to. This new feature is already live on Loopt’s website, but as we alluded to back in Read More
Background Location Finds A Loop(t)hole On The iPhone
Calendar16 Fri, 04 Sep 2009 16:00:38 UTC +00:00
A location-based social network is not going to truly take off on the iPhone until it can run in the background. You know it, I know it, and even Loopt, which makes such an app, knows it. That’s why they’ve done something about it. Beginning today, Loopt is rolling out a trial for background location on the iPhone. Yes, you read that right. If you’ve been following the iPhone at all over the past couple of years, you’re undoubtedly asking yourself how this is possible, since the device does not allow third party apps to run in the background. Has Apple changed its mind about background apps? Not yet. Instead, Loopt is partnering with other companies in the mobile industry for what it’s calling “Always-On Location Service.” Loopt co-founders Sam Altman and Alok Deshpande would not disclose the names of any of these partners, noting that the system set up to Read More

This is a great app. If your worried about stalkers then don't turn on the mix part. And it works fine for me. All you idiots with iPods need to stop complaining about apps that don't work for them.

Lots of Friends
Dudezxcv 1.0 stars Version: 1.1
I wish I had as many friends as the app developer does. For every 3 or 4 (real) reviews, a friend of the dev jumps in and gives this a five star (asia*tic... they're complaining because the app doesn't work). Just because an app is "free" doesn't mean it should not work. Everytime a badly written app is added to the store it makes it that much harder to find the good ones. So, in my opinion, these are not all that free. Hmmm I wonder how long it will take for the next "best app - 5 star" review to show up after this one.

I use tmobile and couldn't get it to work so I just signed up online and it works like a charm. My only thing is that I wish I had thought of it sooner.
Good concept

I understand now why there are so many bad reviews for this app. This app can be a total relationship breaker. Well, I downloaded this app out of curiosity. Loopt asks you if it could use your "current location". Of course the normal person would click "yes". So I did! After all it's thinking, loopt decides to put me approximately .8 miles away from my actual location. I decided to try an experiment and downloaded loopt on my wife's iPhone. (keep in mind, my phone and my wife's phone were side by side and we were not moving). I chose yes for her current location. Loopt shows her being approximately .2 miles from our actual location. So... Two iPhones directly beside each other are located, per loopt, in different locations. In conclusion, this app has a great concept, it does what it says it does. It needs to somehow fix it's errors, until then . Also, for those "relationships" that rely on loopt to "keep the relationship together" , I suggest you not rely on this app, but more so on trust in each other (for now or until loopt gets the errors fixed).
Garbage

Good...but...
SpyderJinx7X 4.0 stars Version: 1.1
I like this app but the location is off. I check my location and I'm almost everytime not where loopt says I am. I'm always about a mile away. My boyfriend also has loopt and sometimes we ping each other and its never accurate. Now as for relationships please don't blame your partner if he/she is not where loopt shows them to be. My boyfriend and I where next to each other when we ran loopt, we were a mile away from each other. Make sence? Don't depend on loopt to give you an exact location. It'll total your relationships.
Ok
