Bungie’s Durandal Hits App Store for Free
Calendar16 Wed, 04 Jan 2012 21:32:05 UTC +00:00
posted by Jonathan Kizer on Wednesday, January 4, 2012 at 1:32 pm.   Ever played Halo? Heard of Bungie? Roughly five years before Halo, Bungie was known for entering the first-person shooter market with Marathon on the Mac (as well as the Apple Pippin, the doomed gaming console of yore). They followed that up with Marathon 2: Durandal, a game which took place seventeen years after the original. However, the rest is history: Macintosh sales slowed drastically in the mid-to-late 1990s, Apple almost went bankrupt, and Bungie decided to open-source the games years before they started work on Halo and were snatched up by Microsoft. Thanks to an enterprising community dedicated to keeping the game alive, Marathon 2: Durandal is now available on the App Store for your iOS device, along with three in-app purchases: high-res textures, enhanced reticules, and a “Master Chief Mode.” The game itself is available for free. FREEday 12/16/11 – Free Games This Week
Calendar16 Fri, 16 Dec 2011 18:30:15 UTC +00:00
By Rob LeFebvre on December 16th, 2011 Free games? Who doesn't like Free games? The GRINCH, that's who. Holy heck this was a great week for the free games. Free! Games! Right? OK, OK, I’ll stop crowing and just get to the games. Fine. Geeze. Breakout Boost – “Atari’s been reviving their classic franchises on iOS; first was the dual-stick shooter reinvention of Asteroids as Asteroids Gunner. While that took a lot of liberties with the Asteroids formula, their latest reinvention, Breakout Boost, is a bit more traditional. The classic Arkanoid-esque gameplay is here: break all the bricks by bouncing a ball off of a paddle at the bottom of the screen.” FREE! Thanks so much for making this Universal and adding GameCenter and Joypad options. This is a Bungie classic before Microsoft bought them and made Halo an Xbox game instead of Mac OS.Brings back the memories and the HD Mode update looks great on my iPhone.Time to go SPNKR some Pfhor ;)Bring on Infinity!!!-Thri11Ki11

Real fun I enjoy it on xbox but when I'm gone somewhere the iPad is great for it

Three cheers and 3... make that 4 in Marathon 1, IAP for the extra paid content to continue to support your efforts in brining back the classics.I'm loving the GamePad support through my iPod Touch. This is one of games that lead eventually to Halo, and with far more psychotic AIs. It has more story then it's rival FPS of the day Doom 2, conveyed through terminals during the course of the game. If you haven't picked up Marathon 1 yet, do it. Then play 2. Hopefully we'll see Infinity, and if we're really lucky maybe see some collaboration for the massive fan game Rubicon. If there is any discussion for getting with the makes of Rubicon, Sorry Rubicon X, may I suggest and additional IAP for bit more then .99¢ of the Terminal Text being readable outside game play, as Chris and Scott would technically own that text and it would be an additional way to bring in support money for people who deserve it.Note to parents, yes, your kids must read to actually successfully advance in this free-to-play game. Unlike others I could think of.
Nice!

That Marathon fan coder is going rampant with more Marathon!
Exceed88 5.0 stars Version: 2.1
I was surprised to see Marathon 1 get ported to iOS at all, and no less from a fan than Bungie themselves! Well Here we go again, Marathon 2, fan ported and supported and it's rockin' its classic roots without compromising much.Marathon 2 was the most exposed of the 3 Marathon games, having reached PC in the mid 90s and then being repainted up (texture and sprite-wise) for the Xbox Live Arcade only a few years ago. Now a devoted fan and coder with the blessing of Bungie release it universally on iOS, free and without needed strings. From the moment you fire up and hear that rockin' menu tune you have access to the original Marathon 2 campaign in all faithfulness. The game controls just like the previous iOS release with the additional option of joypad config. It's nice to see both Marathons get Game Center support as well and I hope that at some point it's possible to code in the multiplayer the Aleph One ports worked out, maybe it'd be possible for them to utilize the Game Center effort too at some point. If you want to add in the higher res sprites from the 360 release you can IAP them for $1. It's worth it since it brings a whole new coat of paint to a classic and it's worth supposrting Blezek's effort as well as those of Bungie and the Aleph One team who made the base code the port is built upon. Great job and nice to see the potential of Marathon Infinity appearing on iOS and completing the trilogy! This is totally helping to cater to my classic FPS hunger as I wait on Doom 2 and Quake 1 to round out the rest of the classic FPS age!
Yes.
