iOS Reading Apps for Book Worms

12.16.11        For those new to the world of the iPhone, the discovery that you can easily and comfortably read on that little screen is a bit of a revelation. Suddenly, you can carry entire volumes of prose in your pocket, as easily as your contacts list. App developers are keen to this, and so the iTunes App Store is flooded with e-readers and e-books. Some are better than others. Read on to discover the very best of bunch. Stanza is an e-book reader app so good, Amazon snatched it up before it could pose a threat to their Kindle iPhone app. Thankfully, you can still download Stanza for free and use it to read Kindle files, or any other e-book files, for that matter. Stanza has a gorgeous, easy-to-use library view, access to online book repositories like Project Gutenberg, and a clean, distraction-free interface for reading. You can Read More
Chris Ware releases iPad-only comic via McSweeney's app
Calendar16 Wed, 21 Sep 2011 02:00:00 UTC +00:00
Chris Ware is an amazing cartoonist out of Chicago, and he's done a lot of work with McSweeney's, the literary journal run by novelist Dave Eggers and his company. Now, Ware has released an iPad-only comic, released inside the McSweeney's app, and co-developed with Spaces of Play, the studio behind the recent iOS game Spirits. The comic is called Touch Sensitive, and it's apparently 14 pages of art and animations by Ware, featuring his great style and pace. The piece itself is a 99 cent purchase inside the McSweeney's app, which is a free download available now. There's a lot of other content in there, too, including a month long subscription to their service called The Small Chair, featuring stories, essays, interview, and other works from the McSweeney's stable. If you haven't checked the app out yet, you should definitely pick it up. And the Ware comic is a great first Read More
I've said before that I'm a huge fan of McSweeney's, the publishing group founded by author Dave Eggers. The company has had an iPhone app for a while, but it recently updated to a universal version, so now all of that great content (from daily posts to various blogs, books, and the eponymous quarterly) is available to read on the iPad any time you want. The app is set up on a subscription basis, so the original purchase of $6.99 gets you access to six months of daily content from the company, plus "semi-eternal delivery" of material from the website (which is publicly available anyway). There's also an ebook store in the new version of the app, where you can buy any books the company has published, at prices from $6 to $15. All together, that may sound like a little much compared to some other apps, but compared to actual Read More

Across 11 categories, we’ve selected the best apps of the year. In every category, each winner is an essential addition to your iPhone. This is the ultimate roundup of essential apps for your iPhone from 2009. The sequel to 2008′s Rolando expands on the tilt ‘n’ swipe platforming action of the original. This time round, we’re brought an entire troupe of colorful Rolando characters to protect, alongside a tropical island inhabited by new baddies and a lost Rolando tribe. The artwork is gorgeous, the gameplay is excellent and, thanks to NGMoco’s Plus+ awards system, it’s got bags of replay value too. Weekly App Store Picks: September 26, 2009
Calendar16 Sat, 26 Sep 2009 16:00:19 UTC +00:00
As another week draws to a close, the App Store expands even further with a torrent of new toys and tools. As ever, I’ve hand-picked four recent iPhone releases for you to take a look at. This week I’ve given our picks a creative vibe, selecting four different apps that let you engage with your artistic and cultural side. My top pick for the week is Xewton Music Studio, plus I’ve been looking at Snapture, GraffitiGeo and McSweeney’s. Armed with an iPhone, there’s never been so much choice for making music on the move. Despite all the choice, the recording app I keep coming back to is FourTrack. It’s a fully-featured 4 track recorder, complete with bouncing, panning, metronome and Wi-Fi sharing. When it comes to full on audio sequencing and sketching out bigger ideas, I head for Intua’s BeatMaker. The app costs twenty bucks, but for producers it’s definitely worth Read More

Sweet on McSweeney's
otau 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Great publication! I'm thrilled to have the pocket version. Will we see new media like mini movies made just for the iphone via Wholphin? Can't wait to see what's next! Keep up the great work!!!
Of course.
M.D.R. 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
What a delight to find that Timothy McSweeney is expanding his media-empire to the iPhone. I cannot wait to see what comes from this little chair. These are some of the most creative (and hilarious) people publishing out there and I am very happy to have them on my person from now on.
Nice
Angry Robot 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
Beautifully done app. The only thing I'd like to see is the ability to share/email links to the Internet Tendancy content.
Waiting for the day..
Prof Xiam 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
I've been waiting for the day when I could re-carve my horribly overpriced Apple device in the image of pure cultural grace. Now that time is upon me. As a young, failing, slowly starving writer I worry about the purchases I make. So, like a surgeon I cut to save and this app could well be 7.99 per six hours and I would buy it again. It's well designed. It has this freshness to it like mail that isn't a student loan bill. It has a nice option for font size so I can read it while pretending to listen to my roommate lecture me on why I shouldn't " eat from his garden ". Also, I think owning it betters my chance of getting published by them , right? Right?
Elegant, convenient, and delightful.
Rainhead 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
The design is elegant, straight-forward, and thoughtful. The content can be consumed rapidly and conveniently to inject that familiar McSweeney's inspirational, lighthearted spirit into your day just when you need it most. I haven't had this little morsel in my posession for long enough to change my life, but I expect it will become my new companion while waiting in airports or tucked into bed on a Sunday morning.
Magnificent
8bitforest 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Quite the surprise. Very clean.
Fantastic!
>>---zing> 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
McSweeney's on the iPhone? At first this sounds like an unlikely couple, yet after using it makes perfect sense. The price is right and I actually like that it's a paid service which no doubt will translate into great premium content.
Wonderful
andyinabox 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
This immediately became one of my top 5 apps. Awesome.

DavidMGlines 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
This is a great opportunity to have a slice of the best publishing house around without having to buy the whole pie. Well designed & hopefully soon to be full of literary goodness, this is a damn good app. Mmmm, pie.
Instant satisfaction!
jakwgrav 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
McSweeney'd has my favorite article of all times, so I decided to try out the app. The first story I read had me laughing out loud. This is getting moved to my first page of apps!
Top Notch
Malachi Constant 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Best literary app. Period. If it cost $20 it'd still be a deal.
Nothing Better

Simply Superb
ViktorWalters 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
The more superb implementation of the iPhone app store as a method of disseminating information and at the same time introducing a whole new demographic to your readership, McSweeney's is an excellent addition to anyone's app collection. One will soon find themselves sharing it with others and exhorting one's friends to subscribe as well. Another leap in the advancement of the Information Revolution and a proof-of-concept par excellence.
Incred
donlab 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Sofa King amazing app. But… where are the lists?
Finally
The_Good_Names_are_Always_Taken 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
It's nice to have something worth reading on my iPhone. $5.99 is worth the ability to carry some intelligence in my pocket.
Great job!
PaintedSaw 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Beautiful job on the app. I love it. It's simple, elegant, and not cluttered. A++!!!
Love.
reDO-brook 4.0 stars Version: 1.0

Winner.
Dcifantom 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
All of the yummy McSweeny goodness you've come to expect in a portable format.
Hmmmm Unimpressed so Far
chandrakirti 2.0 stars Version: 1.0
This is no American Scholar, I'm afraid. Quirky -- yes. Worth the money -- no. Try the NewYork Review of Books and others before investing in this. If this were a SF restaurant, it would be closed.
Terrific content
chainlinkspiral 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
The stuff I like in easy app format!
Excellent App
AndroidJackson 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
The entertainment I got from the first batch of stories that came with the app were more than worth the price. I will definetly renew the subscription via in-app purchase when the time comes. Russell Quinn did a bang up job designing an app that just feels right. If you enjoy iPhones and the English language, spend the money and be happy about it.
