Review: Men’s Health Workouts for iPhone
Calendar16 Tue, 28 Jul 2009 04:36:06 UTC +00:00
I have a new workout buddy, Men’s Health Workouts. A couple weeks ago I was browsing menshealth.com looking for some new workouts when a picture of the ever so sexy iPhone showed up on the middle of the page followed by the words "new iPhone app". Being a sucker for cool new iPhone apps I immediately clicked on the Download now button. The iPhone is turning into a great resource for just about anything on the go, so it is only natural that workouts and fitness would make it there too. What it does: Just as you would expect, this application is a library of workouts and exercises. With over 20 complete workouts and 150 individual exercises, this is a great resource for workout material. Men’s Health has promised to add new workouts and exercises every week, so this app will continue to grow and become more useful. Workouts Workouts are Read More

Easier than a binder
Pbusiness 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
This app brings all of the best MH workouts to my iPhone. I used to have to carry them in paper form in a binder! This app is worth it!
MH Workouts iPhone App Review
Bzzz! 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Unlike some of the other workout iPhone apps that I've downloaded, MH Workouts is actually a great compliment to my workout regime. The instructions are incredibly simple and easy-to-follow, and some of the exercises featured have actually made my gym visits more efficient. The photos are perfect quality; overall, great application.
Ripoff
jess3e 2.0 stars Version: 1.0
Half the features of other apps and updates cost money? If that's what apps are going to be like on the iPhone 3.0 then count me out. Lammmme. Pass on this app folks, I made the mistake of not reading the fine print.
a workout app that actually works
squash_dawg 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
I've downloaded pretty much every single fitness app on iTunes, including ipump and ifitness, but this MHW blows them out of the water. Totally polished. Other apps either have bush-league photographs or their instruction is confusing (or worse, flat-out wrong.) I love the professional photographs and the clear direction here. Overall, an awesome app. Thanks, guys.
Love it
Gymrat Mike 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Great app- awesome interface, looks good and works good. Don't love paying for the additional workouts, but they add value and are worth it.
Better than expected
Billy512 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Not sure I understand the negative reviews here. I like this app. It's slick and easy to navigate. I like being able to search for workouts by goal or body part. And you're not going to find another workout app with circuit training--that's pretty cool. I'm just rating the main app. Haven't purchased any expansion packs.

bumpastickah 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
D/L'd last week but have been waiting to post review until after I had some gym sessions logged. Liked it the more and more I used it. I'm too lazy to piece together my own workouts and too cheap to higher a trainer, so love that these are actual programs, not just one and done exercises. A huge bonus is the logging. In the past, I've always kind of stalled in my workouts because I would lose track of how much weight I lifred last time or got moves confused. I'm psyched to get back in the gym and improve my averages.
solid, if some room to improve
brotein powder 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
I lost 100 pounds reading Men's Health, so I was looking forward to checking this out after using most of the fitness apps. This one actually has the best fitness advice--the others are just random exercises, no circuits, with a few bells and whistles thrown in. They might as well be slideshows. This has 18 workouts to start with while many of the others only have 10 so even if you don't buy the add-on packs you're in good shape.
Great App
Zim3018 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Don't let the negative reviews stop you from getting this app. With the release of OS 3, apps can now have in app purchase for additional content and this app takes advantage of that feature by offering additional workouts. The app comes pre populated with 18 workouts and over 100 exercises to help you target everything from weight loss to gaining muscle. The app is easy to use and full of great tips, definitely gets a thumbs up.
NOT intuitive at all
Danger Jesus 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
Besides that you get lost in this app, you have to click way to many buttons to do anything. Also, mens health tries to sell you more stuff inside the app that you would expect to get with the original purchase. There are a LOT better apps out there for fitness than this one, FitnessBuilder is by far the best one I've used so far. The Mens Health app is just another one-off crap fitness app.
Lotsa Love
ecgnyc 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
I'm totally digging this thing right now. Usually I just go to the gym and do a little bit of this or a little bit of that, do a quick zip in the pool then hit the showers and lounging around in the steam room. Anyway, lack of focus, I would say, is my problem. And of course forget about personal trainers, too. Bunch of dopes, that crew. Plus, I'm a cheap-skate. So anyway -- this app totally give me two things I totally need -- A) focus and B) stats. Now, I can just kick into this app and get right into a cool workout, focusing on goals or body parts, go through a routine, still do a zip in the pool, and keep track of all my reps, sets and weights all in the app so that I can always look back and see what I did last week or last month. See my improvement, you know. Track it. One nice suggestion would be a way to track my measurements too, over time. So I could see that my arms have bulged 2 inches and my fat stomach has dropped 4 inches, that kind of stuff. You know, the results that matter. Anyway, great app and it's totally going to help. Plus, Men's Health? A trusted source for sure!! Been reading them for years!
Amazing workout app
Sluggerjt44 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
By far the best workout app in the app store. It gives you everything you could think of. You can log your sets an it even let's you download more workouts as well which is definitely a plus. Great job on this one!
must-have
iron_gal 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
it took me a second to get the circuit system, but once I understood it, it's the same as the circuit workouts in the magazine. If you're just doing one exercise after another, you're wasting time.
Needs large improvements
jess.mo 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
Saw the ad on their site, decided to purchase the application. I could not be more sad because of this crud application. They have just taken a bunch of photos and slapped them together in an application without any consideration for the user. Want more exercises? You will have to pay for them. Want to log your results? It's hard as heck. Want to see your results graphically? Forget-about-it.
Misinformation
Husslter 2.0 stars Version: 1.0
Does no one proof-read the content anymore? I expect incorrect information from lesser companies, but come on, this is Mens Health. Get your act together.
Very Poor!! Read the magazine instead
Dalkin 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
I have been reading Men's Health for years and have always felt that they provide great content so I bought this app expecting the same quality. I was sorely mistaken. This is basically a few workouts taken from the mag and thrown together on a very poorly designed app.
Pretty Good, Can Be Better
imonmymac 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
Good circuit training with creative exercises that helped inject life back into my workouts. Interface is attractive but could be better: - No way to make your own workout based on the exercises available - Needs a better interface/menu on the individual exercises section, can be tedious and nerve racking - Glad I can log my sets but would like a graphing function It's a great start, if they pay attention to our requests it will only get better.
Not good
boozenman 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
Its just a marketing scam, with little to no content. Don't waste your money.
Disapointed !
Meti333376 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
Very badly executed app. Limited function, and difficult to use. The app is more of an add for their expansion pack. Waste of $1.99 
Not worth it
nothingthatgood34 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
Better to pay the extra few dollars and get something thats useful. Atleast its a one time fee and none of this paying for so called expansion packs. Come on dev's cut the marketing scams.
Work out routines are good...
ruvid 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
My only complaint is that it freezes often. The touch screen scrolling works at random times, so when you try to flip to the next page, you sometimes have to try it 8-10 times. It's erratic and random. The routines are pretty good, but the inability to navigate efficiently has detracted me to a different program iFitness... which rocks.
Its okay
vicotryious3 2.0 stars Version: 1.0
A lot of room for improvement here
not worth it
JSR123 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
Not what I was expecting. Most additional workout programs require additional payments.
YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR...
avillegas_08 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
BEING THAT THE APP IS ONLY 1.99... YOU CANT EXPECT TO MUCH. I ACTUALLY LIKE IT...IT GIVES YOU MANY SIMPLE EASY TO FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS QUICK. I WORKOUT ALOT SO I FIND THIS APP USEFULL WHEN I WANNA CHANGE MY ROUTINE UP A BIT... GOOD JOB MH.. KEEP EM COMING
needs some work
vincejesaitis 2.0 stars Version: 1.1
The app is pretty slick, but a couple things are missing: 1)sessions, it only logs a session if you do one of the MH workouts, you can't do it for individual exercises, and when you use the individual exercise function it only records the time you work out while doing that specific exercise, when going to the next exercise the timer starts over; 2) there are numerous common lifts missing - i.e. the first time I used the app I was doing my own chest workout, barbell bench, followed by incline barbell bench, however the incline barbell bench was not listed under exercises. Other notably missing exercises: leg press, barbell military/shoulder press, dumbell military/shoulder press; 3) the workouts would be better if it featured multi-session workouts - i.e. gave workouts for Mon, Wed, Fri, etc.
Great!!
D.USA 5.0 stars Version: 1.1
This app works well, looks great, and I perfect for every workout. Five Stars.
Solid...with some room for improvement
RedcrossReborn 4.0 stars Version: 1.1
I've been reading MH for years so I got the app the moment I saw it. I like having the workout on my phone so I don't have to rip out the page(s) and carry them folded in my pocket. Some slight improvements I'd like to see before I'll give it five stars though. -When I download a workout pack, I would like to see that as a goals section. I download the beach body pack (4 workouts) and I didn't know which workouts where part of it outside of the dollar sign beside the name, which is by all of the purchased workouts. Definitely need a way to see them in their respective groups -A tab to track personal stats (weight, size, etc.) just so we can see how effective these MH workouts are!
Great app
Gymgoer 5.0 stars Version: 1.1
I recently downloaded the Men's Health workout app, and I'm really glad I did. I like the step by step instructions that are provided for each exercise. The ability to log sets is great-helps keep me on track. It's nice to have the option to add expansion packs as well, so the content never gets old. Overall, definitely worth the cheap price tag.
keeps getting better!
Billy512 5.0 stars Version: 1.2
Awesome upgrades--the workouts are way better organized. It's much easier to find the one that best matches my goal and what I feel like doing each day. Navigation has vastly been improved, and the instructions and hints are easier to find when you need them. Logging and tracking have been greatly upgraded as well. This app is really getting good.
Very Poor!! Save your money
Dalkin 1.0 stars Version: 1.1
Even with an update, this is still a very clunky App. It's extremely difficult to navigate through, I first though my phone wouldn't swipe until I realized that it's the app, it is very clunky and not at all smooth. There are no videos, just images, com'on who doesnt have videos anymore. Every time I switched exercises I get a message with the reps which I have to close to see the actual exercise. Once I close it then I can get it back so I'm not sure what it's telling me to do. It is very difficult to get back to the homepage, I actually got lost in a few blank pages unable to get out and had to close the app completely and restart. The stats and logging are very basic, and the timer only tells me my total exercise time, there is no rest time.
100 times better
brotein powder 5.0 stars Version: 1.2
Some of the hint screens in the previous version were annoying, but this is super sleek--love it!
nice

Cool. Love this week's workout. Right on time for shore next month.

Nice going code monkeys. You got the rest timer up in this bitty. All right, all right, all right.
Just plain bad!
fudge12 1.0 stars Version: 1.1
Even with an update this is just a plain bad App. Coming from someone like Men's Health you would expect better.
think of the children
wesraven 5.0 stars Version: 1.1
One of my favorite pasttimes is going to the gym and watching meatheads work on their mirror muscles, only half the time their a rep away from the ER . I got this app for my sons to help them with their workouts and most importantly, to ensure that they're doing them safetly. If I can't be there, I want them to at least have some ACCURATE and SAFE advice so they don't pull their back out or rip their arms out of their socket acting like fools. The routines are solid, too. 5 stars.
right on
MisterRoboto2000 5.0 stars Version: 1.2
Good update. Appreciate that the developer added new features and not just under the hood tweaks.

Very smart--a must-have app
OmegaMan70 5.0 stars Version: 1.2
I'm not sure how I managed without this thing. I used to do just the same five or six exercises over and over, but this app has helped me really expand my workout. Having all the instructions right there and ready to go is tremendous--no more books, paper, and posters! Great job, MH!
Baller app
Simmian1982 5.0 stars Version: 1.2
Love all the workouts, especially the weight-loss focused ones. Cutting my weekly cardio time in half. Big muscle burns more fat, so I'm also focusing on lower body where the biggest muscles are located.
awesome
kungfool34 5.0 stars Version: 1.2
Crazy about this app. Never hit the gym without it or my nike free's.
I expected better from Men's Health
JohanHead 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
I've used the MH online personal trainer for years, and was very excited for this app to be available. I am, thus far, disappointed. MH has a lot of great workouts available to them, but the ones the app comes with are quite limited. Also, the content available for additional purchase is specialized for one or two body parts and do not make up an entire program that would span more than, let us say, four weeks.
loaded
kayceePressure 5.0 stars Version: 1.2
App ought to be called the workout bible. It has about 40 exercises I've never tried, but the best part is most of them are done with common equipment, like bbells and dumbbells.
Epic
9ineVolt 5.0 stars Version: 1.2
It's the best thing to happen to me since the Gazelle.
Expected much much more...
DeMented Toys 1.0 stars Version: 1.2
I bought this app expecting much more. It has basic workouts and that is about it... You can buy additional workouts, called expansion packs for .99 each. Maybe my expectations were too high... Maybe it will get better.... For a big name magazine like Men's Health, they could do much better!
Not worth it.
mikemandrake 2.0 stars Version: 1.2
Pretty buggy app. Scrolling works erratically. IFitness is better.

Some smarts clearly went into this app. Love the upgraded interface. The drop-in screens were getting to be a drag-props on fixing that.
Good investment
OrangeDroP293 5.0 stars Version: 1.2
Great app. Since I segment my workouts, I love how each workout is labeled with date of last completion so I can keep track of which body parts I work each day.
Gotta Say
RRMs 5.0 stars Version: 1.2
This app gives me a clear picture of my progress, so it lets me know what I'm doing right and what I need to be doing better. I'm no longer just going through the motions at the gym, but trying to improve my stats in the history window every time I lift.

App does exactly what it says, and it does it well. Five stars.

Ask and ye shall receive. Thanks for adding the log clearing option. A+ update.
Best workout program, needs improvement
Lahero 4.0 stars Version: 1.21
First of all, I'm really happy about all these different workouts at your fingertips. All of them are very effective and give a wide variety of options so you're never bored at the gym.
Get it right!
Rebel strong 3.0 stars Version: 1.21
The workouts and exercises are really good especially the circuits. The app itself is pitiful! The logs have no memory if the app is disrupted to answer the phone or something; so when you have to start the app over after leaving it, you have to relog your excercises and end up with a bunch of garbage in your log history. It looks like you were in such a hurry to get the app out, you compromised it. GET IT RIGHT!
strong work for doing strong work
fitmanv 5.0 stars Version: 1.21
i love this app. It gets me an awesome workout by doing exercises i've never heard of. I just got the beach body expansion and I'm loving the new exercises. rock on men's health
haha
enigma8H 5.0 stars Version: 1.2
I used to pay some knucklehead in a black shirt with "Trainer" on the back to do less than this app does. Dollar saved, dollar earned.
DO NOT BUY
Perrin_12 1.0 stars Version: 1.2.5
If you have spent anytime in a gym this app is worthless. Thought I would find new workout ideas. Nope, just the same old stuff. Plus you buy this app and then you have to buy expansion packs????? Take your money and go buy Arnolds book. AVOID......DO NOT BUY.....
Fabulous app, but...
wes webber 3.0 stars Version: 1.2.6
Everything included in this app is outstanding, with the exception of one major 'But'. The workouts are all world-class, described in excellent detail so someone completely inexperienced could walk into a gym and start something right away. That said, while I do understand it is in the publishers interest to promote the workout expansion pack, there is absolutely zero reason for you to not be able to put together your own workout routine. There are 4 or 5 workouts that ive been working out (no pun intended) of for a few weeks, and its an insanely frustrating time waster to have to back all the way out to the homescreen just to go and find a different exercise to log a set of. Also, in the exercise list, whats the problem with having the A-Z scroll on the side so I don't have to scroll through every single routine when i'm trying to get to something toward the bottom. Now that I think of it, forcing me to sit through the splash page with the situation showing off his abs EVERY SINGLE TIME is a big one, too. Like I said, great app, but a few corners cut to increase in-app purchases really take what could be the finishing touches to a masterpiece and make this otherwise stellar app insanely frustrating to use at times.
Love this app - With ONE tiny suggestion
ddmurray 4.0 stars Version: 1.21
This app is great and unobtrusive while you work out. Certainly beats carrying around the pen and pad of paper to log your results.
Terrible!!!
Workout-aholic 1.0 stars Version: 1.2.4
Had the first version, worked fine. This version is useless. You can't view any of the workouts. I would expect something better from Men's Health. Don't buy! Not worth it...at least till they fix it.
Misses the mark with me compared to similarly priced programs (organization, missing content, etc)
IckleMePickleMeTickleMeToo 3.0 stars Version: 1.21
The pluses - the layout is generally pretty clean and easy to navigate, the images are crisp, and the tracking system is on par with similar programs. Where it fails to deliver my needs is in organization and clarity of information. The "alphabetical sorting" of exercises and workouts isn't smart enough to exclude "the" in the names of titles which is pretty poor. It took me a while to figure out where one of the advertised workout programs were because of this oversight. And for goodness sake - give me a faster way of scrolling so that I don't die of old age before I get to the exercises at the end of the alphabet please! Oh, and when you select a workout program to try, on the following briefing screen there should be a clear breakdown of what EQUIPMENT you'll need to have in oder to complete the workout. It really irritated me that as I started going through one program, it wasn't until the 2nd or 3rd exercise that it told me I needed a medicine ball (which I don't own nor have easy access to). Gee thanks for the heads up, Men's Health. In cases like this, it would be nice to swap out an exercise for another one or even design a custom workout from the exercises provided. The program may have this feature but I certainly can't find it. As another note - I'm constantly travelling (which is why I have an iphone in the first place). There should be additional content that supports workouts when you don't have access to a gym or gym equipment. The "no weights" workout doesn't count because it still requires the use of a chin-up bar. Other things - the additional paid content you purchase separately is of dubious distinction. Again, you may accept that you're paying for quality because of the brand but I've found far better options and flexibility through other Fitness apps. It may be just the developer who needs to deal with these issues but c'mon, didn't anyone in MH's editorial department fully review the app? Case in point - go to the exercises and select "Single Leg Lowering". If you're running the 1.21 build and nothing but a white screen pops up - congratulations! - you've found a bug in the code! Yay - what a great easter egg. Sorry for sarcasm but I hope I've been clear as to why I'm underwhelmed with the program. Updates may change my mind but that remains to be seen. If this program is meant to improve me, consider my critiques as a way to improve the program.
Buggy Update
kibsos 1.0 stars Version: 1.2.4
This update wasn't tested appropriately before releasing. It has termites.

RoggieP 1.0 stars Version: 1.2.4
I can't access the exercises. It shows "downloading exercise, please wait" but nothing happens!
I regreted
Ray GQ 2.0 stars Version: 1.2.4
I just did the update and now I can't see must of the workouts. I thought that something was wrong with my connection but it wasn't so now I really will like mens healht to fix the app ASAP!!!
Good app.
Antho16903 3.0 stars Version: 1.2.5
Great app. HOWEVER, I don't use it as much as I'd like to because I can't listen to Pandora or my Ipod music while using it. How does one work out without music. I can't, I gotta have some Korn or something playing and loud!!!
Worth it
YousAbusta 4.0 stars Version: 1.21
For someone who needs variety to stay motivated, this is great to knock out a 45 min workout when you can't make it to the gym. The app is laid out well with room to improve, just add reps or weight. Maybe not for those who are a little more serious about their workouts. No matter what, you can definately get tired if you follow the directions. Not tired yet? Just add a few more exercises to your routine from the specific body part you want to work. Only suggestion is an automatic loging feature for each set you complete.
