Phil Schiller Says What's On His iPhone
Calendar16 Mon, 07 Dec 2009 19:53:58 UTC +00:00
It’s nearing the end of the year, and while all of the general public is out bustling through stores eagerly finding gifts to present to their loved ones, Apple’s employees have compiled their annual iTunes Rewind list that has highlighted their picks for the best in iTunes’ various media categories. iPhone Alley introduces our new editor debate series, beginning with a debate about Nintendo’s 3DS handheld system. Can it compete with iOS or is it dead-on-arrival? More importantly, is it worth the purchase? Read More
We’ve told you earlier today about the App Store piece in today’s NYTimes, well the journalists took advantage of the occasion to ask Phil Schiller what are his favorite apps and here is what he came up with: It’s funny to still be so excited about Shazam, it’s been out for a while already and there’s been quite some progress lately. Still, it’s some great apps. Read More

Desert Island Apps – #2, Marcus Hobbs
Calendar16 Sat, 31 Oct 2009 16:09:40 UTC +00:00
Today we ‘re continuing our new series here on Just Another iPhone Blog “ called ‘Desert Island Apps ‘.  It ‘s based on a very long-running and brilliant BBC Radio show called ‘Desert Island Discs ‘.  The premise of Desert Island Discs is simple and wonderful “ a guest is invited to choose the eight musical pieces (originally records) they would take with them if they were stranded on a desert island. In our case of course we ‘re not interested in our guests ‘ choice of music.  What we want to know is which six iPhone apps they would take with them if stranded on an island. We ‘re leaving the playing field pretty wide open for them “ letting them assume they ‘ve got WiFi and full connectivity on their island. I ‘m very happy to have Marcus Hobbs -creator of one of my all-time favorite iPhone apps, SmackTalk Read More
Watch live NBA games with League Pass Mobile for iPhone
Calendar16 Fri, 30 Oct 2009 17:00:00 UTC +00:00
The NBA, via MobiTV, has made available its "League Pass" service to the iPhone via the League Pass Mobile app [iTunes link]. Like the MLB At Bat app [iTunes link], League Pass Mobile allows you to stream live NBA games onto your iPhone -- over 40 live NBA games per week. There's also the ability to view stats from the current game, and look at scores from games across the league. Subscribers can also replay full games up to 48 hours after the game has been played. I'm a basketball junkie, and a former subscriber of NBA League Pass Broadband, the NBA's desktop version of the service -- former, because I actually just canceled my subscription yesterday. I found the service subjected too many games to blackouts, which often prevented me from watching many games of my beloved world champion Los Angeles Lakers. As a result, I'd often hop on over Read More
Any Given Sunday: 7 Sports Tools You Can't Live Without
Calendar16 Mon, 26 Oct 2009 22:15:00 UTC +00:00
Touchdown dances, chest painters and rally caps - if you're not a sports fan, it's hard to understand why a perfectly upstanding citizen would wear a gigantic foam hand or engage in the politically incorrect Tomahawk chop. But if you are a diehard sports addict, you've probably been one since you were a kid. We watched in awe when Nolan Ryan pitched a 101 mph fast ball at the age of forty, when Air Jordan effortlessly dunked from the free throw line and when Joe Montana set the record for most yards passing during Super Bowl XIX. When you've been present to watch sports history, you can't turn your back on the game now. Nevertheless, with so much happening at once, below are a few tools that can help you juggle multiple games: 1. Lockerblogger: Lockerblogger offers users a chance to create fan profiles and track the sports they're most interested Read More
I ‘m not positive how new this update for MLB At Bat is, as my updates got a little muddled up after the recent OS 3.1 update.  I think it ‘s quite new though, and it ‘s certainly packing a great new feature “ the ability to purchase any live game for just 99 cents (except those where blackouts or other restrictions apply). This is a huge bonus for users of MLB At Bat.  Before, you could only view 1-2 selected live games each day, unless you are a MLB.com subscriber.  Now even if you ‘re not a subscriber, you can choose to grab just about any game to view live for only $0.99. It ‘s a little bit of a shame that this is coming at the very tail-end of the season “ but hopefully it ‘s a feature that will remain in the 2010 version of the app.  I Read More
As Major League Baseball’s regular season winds down, the games become more and more important, so it’s great to see that MLB.com at Bat 2009 has been updated with the ability to send Push Notifications and watch even more live games. MLB.com at Bat 2009 v1.4 features the ability to receive Push Notifications when a game is set to begin and end.  Setting up the notifications is simple, just tap on the “Extras” button and then locate “Settings.”  Within that menu there will be the ability to toggle Push Notifications.  You can then select which teams you want to receive Push Notifications for with a single tap.  Each team can be customized to send Push Notifications to warn you when a game is about to begin, end, or both. The other new feature in v1.4 is the ability to watch ANY remaining regular season game in the app for $.99 per Read More
MLB At Bat adds in-app purchases
Calendar16 Tue, 01 Sep 2009 17:00:00 UTC +00:00
It's no secret that one of my favorite iPhone apps is Major League Baseball's At Bat [iTunes link]. Last season it provided real-time statistics and video clips from games across the league. This season, it added live video streaming of full games as well as Game Day audio. At first the video streams were free, then MLB switched the model to feature one free game of the day, and the others were available to MLB.TV subscribers. Frankly I thought that was a bummer, as I don't want to pay a monthly fee for baseball. They must have read my mind, because version 1.4 was released this week with in-app purchasing. Users can buy any live video stream for $0.99US. Hooray! No more MLB.TV. I've gushed over this app before, so I'll keep it short this time. Not only is it a great experience for fans, the developers seem on top of Read More
New “Avid” iPhone ad shows off its real-time GPS power
Calendar16 Wed, 26 Aug 2009 16:03:22 UTC +00:00
Apple has released a new iPhone 3GS commercial targeting sports enthusiasts. Like many recent iPhone ads, ‘Avid’ highlights three applications linked by a common theme and is available in Apple’s iPhone ad gallery. - Golfshot: Golf GPS [App Store, $29.99] Provides GPS range-finding and aerial views for over 15,000 golf courses worldwide. - MLB.com At Bat 2009 [App Store, $9.99] Offers live video streaming of limited Major League Baseball games, as well as audio streaming, video highlights and recaps, and “Gameday” live graphical pitch-by-pitch coverage. - TouchSports Tennis ’09 [App Store, $0.99] Offers a realistic 3D tennis game experience with multiple characters and courts to choose from. All use GPS or real-time type coverage as their theme, and is the latest and greatest ad to demonstrate the iPhone’s prowess as a device for real-world usage. Apple Releases New iPhone 3GS Television Ad: Avid
Calendar16 Tue, 25 Aug 2009 18:32:03 UTC +00:00
Apple has released a brand new iPhone 3GS television ad titled “Avid,” which showcases apps containing a common theme, and in this case the theme is sports.  This ad is similar to Apple’s previous ads that contain the usual tagline of “There’s an app for that.” The ad features apps that are geared towards avid sports fans.  The apps featured in the ad include: GolfShot: Golf GPS ($29.99): A GPS range-finder with over 15,000 worldwide golf courses. MLB.com At Bat 2009 ($9.99): Offers 1-2 live streaming MLB games per day, along with audio streaming, in-game video highlights, condensed game recaps, and live graphical pitch-by-pitch coverage. TouchSports Tennis ’09 ($.99): An accessible 3D tennis game that features a variety of characters and courts, and touch and accelerometer-based controls. The ad is embedded below, but you can also view this and all of Apple’s other ads on their website. Read More
By Rene Ritchie, Tuesday, Aug 25, 2009 | Apple has begun airing another in their long line of “App for That” iPhone ads, this time with “Avid”, targeting sports fans. The ad shows off: Apple typically releases these spots in batches, so we’ll keep our eyes peeled for more, and if you see any, let us know. iPhone-Werbespot ‘Avid’

Qik [iTunes link] is an eagerly awaited free app for the iPhone. Most other video capable phones have a version of it. Qik allows, among other things, live streaming from your phone to the web. How could someone not want that capability? Early on, Qik offered a version for jailbroken phones that worked quite well. Well of course, we've learned that what can run on other smartphones may not necessarily make it to the iPhone, and predictably the App Store version has been crippled. You can record video, upload video (Wi-Fi only) but no streaming or uploading over the 3G network. In fact, you can't even live stream over WiFi. I'm sure doing all this this violates the hastily revised terms of service from AT&T. It still grates that the phone that is helping to save AT&T financially has its users abused by having lesser services than other phones that are Read More
iPhone TV: Top iPhone Apps for Live Streaming Television
Calendar16 Sat, 08 Aug 2009 23:54:05 UTC +00:00
Earlier this year, Apple submitted a spec to the IETF for live streaming multimedia content over HTTP, leading some to suspect that a live video protocol would soon be making its way to iPhone and iPod devices. With the new 3.0 version of the iPhone OS, that HTTP live streaming protocol became a reality, and while there were already a handful of live video apps on the iPhone, they’re presumably now a lot better. This list is a round up of some of the live TV options available on the iPhone. Most of these apps work best over wifi (and a few won’t work at all over 3G), and generally live streaming is a big drain on battery life. Still, being able to catch up with live television or out-of-market broadcasts when you’re not near your TV is a great option for iPhone owners to have. netTV (Free/$2.99) Available in both Read More
There are at least 27 Netflix related iPhone apps according to Macworld. Their purposes differ but most of them are designed to let you manage your movie queue. A new player is about to enter the arena: Netflix itself, who intends to bring "Watch Instantly" video streaming to the iPhone/iPod touch and the Nintendo Wii. At present Netflix streams over 12,000 movies and TV shows over a large variety of devices including Intel-based Macs. Todd Spangler of Mutichannel.com speculates, and I agree with him totally, that when released, streaming will be limited to Wi-Fi only. This is not because there's any technical reason not to stream over the AT&T 3G network, but like the SlingPlayer Mobile app, streaming will probably be hobbled to prevent massive data overloading of the AT&T network. This being the case, I wonder why Apple/AT&T allowed streaming of full baseball games using the MLB.com At Bat 2009 Read More

Reviews

quite disappointing
Anonymou_s 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
If the audio streaming worked consistently, and the app were a bit more polished, this would be a 5-star value for the whole season's worth of baseball. But I'm posting on Opening Day, and the app has already crashed on me several times, the audio drops about once per inning and stays dropped for quite some time, meaning I miss part of the game. And the app's interface doesn't seem to be very well considered: for instance, every time you go to the Home screen or answer a call the app forgets what game you're following and which audio stream you're listening to, forcing you to re-select it every single time you re-open the app rather than seamlessly resuming what you were doing last time (or allowing a permanent preference, say, for your favorite team's broadcasters). Nice idea, poor execution -- both the user interface and MLB's streaming infrastructure need work.
Error message on audio....
jrff 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
I'll gladly change my review to a five star once this app is working correctly. Was able to listen to the first 7 innings of my game with no issue (on wi-fi, 3G and EDGE) then suddenly my audio went out completely, going between "Connecting..." and "Error."
Latest update only ADDS functionality!
mikee385 5.0 stars Version: 1.3.0
To all the reviewers who are currently slamming this application for supposed "bait and switch" tactics, the developers did not remove any functionality in this update! Everything that you could do in the previous version is still available in this version. You can still listen to either teams' radio feed for ANY game being played. You can STILL watch the one or two selected free games every day (subject to blackout restrictions like before). These free games are simply not at the top of the games list anymore, since most people would rather see their favorite team at the top. Aside from this minor and helpful tweak, the only thing the developers changed about this version of the app is that MLB.tv subscribers can now watch all of the games that they've already paid for on the iPhone. They aren't forcing anyone to buy MLB.tv to watch games; you still get the one or two free games per day without having to do anything extra. This update is a bonus for MLB.tv subscribers and is otherwise inconsequential to the rest of the users. Nothing has been taken away; this app is exactly the same as the previous version for non-MLB.tv subscribers. Once again, an awesome update by the wonderful developers for MLB. I wish other sports organizations had such a dedication to bringing the best possible viewing experience to their fans.
$5 less than the regular price
LETS_GO_OAKLAND 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
This looks to be a fantastic deal. Gameday Audio is $14.95 for the season when purchased through the mlb.com website, but only $9.99 when purchased as part of this application.
THIS WAS A 5 STAR APP, NOW IT'S PRACTICALLY WORTHLESS!!!
bigdogbts 2.0 stars Version: 1.3.0
DO NOT UPGRADE TO THE LATEST VERSION!!!! One of the things that I really liked about the At Bat application was the ability to watch a few games daily on the 3.0 version. As of today, that has changed. In another move to stick it to the fans, MLB has downgraded the number of free live games to only one daily. Their excuse is that the downgrade was necessary to allow MLB.TV subscribers to access all games. Well sorry MLB. I was comfortable paying $9 for the app, but i'm not going to fork over another $69.99. It's bad enough that most games aren't even broadcast on local stations anymore. Since when does an "upgrade" actually remove features that your user base wants? At least the audio feeds are still free.... for now.
Would be nice if live video actually worked.....
moviescptending 2.0 stars Version: 1.20
Don't get me wrong I like the MLB at bat application, but my major problem is my inability to watch the live video. Yesterday while checking some scores I saw an advertisement saying two games will now be streamed live each day. After downloading the $10 iPod touch OS upgrade to my disdain my iPod can not seem to determine my location!
Much better value than last year. Could still use improvements.
dsemaya 4.0 stars Version: 1.2.1
The 2009 version of this app is a great value. $10 to listen to every game this season is well worth it and in the most recent versions I find that the streaming works very well on 3G no matter where I am (even at Citi Field, which has AT&T network issues). I was even able to listen to a Mets game on a cross-country flight on Virgin America over WiFi and then drove around northern California with my iPhone plugged into the stereo in the rental car and listen to the WFAN New York radio Mets broadcast as if I was driving on the LIE. I do have a number of issues that I would like to see addressed:
Amazing app, gets even more amazing
snifswamp 5.0 stars Version: 1.20
Before today this app was 5 stars, it's a great way to keep up with baseball if your not at home.. Now with the new 3.0 update it says we will get LIVE streaming video of select games, starting June 18. Currently 2 games scheduled each day for the next 5 days. FIVE STARS, a must have for any baseball fan, well worth the money.
A must have for baseball fans
skauffman 5.0 stars Version: 1.3.0
It's the ultimate app now that you can watch every game with your pre-existing MLB.TV account. Not to mention home and away audio and condesed versions for every game.
Stop whining
I'm almost Jesus 5.0 stars Version: 1.3.0
There are 2 games today for free, and i don't know how often you people look at the app but there have been quite a few days when there was only 1 game free on video. The only things they did in this update was include the ability to watch any game for MLB.tv users and improved the interface so your favorite team always shows up at the top instead of the free games. Maybe you should pay attention and wait until they show the games of the day that are coming up before you start whining about things. You all just assume since the game of the day isn't on the top that they removed it completely? MLB, the app is fantastic. I'll gladly keep paying 10 bucks a season.
Even better than the first time!!!
Erica54 5.0 stars Version: 1.3.0
Just upgraded and I'm still getting 2 free games. Looking forward to the Cubies and Phils from my cube today! As an MLB.TV subscriber, I'm psyched that MLB.com is supporting us with the full lineup.
This is terrible
tvlep 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
I downloaded and used last years version of this app and loved it. This version on the other hand doesn't deliver at all. It crashes, it has locked up my iPhone, and I have had a hard time connecting to the audio, and once connected I lose it. Not worth the 10 dollars at all.
Unable to view live streams
new touch 2.0 stars Version: 1.2.1
I am not in a blackout part of the country. I am in Sacramento, trying to watch my METS come back from 5-0 deficit against the pirates. And now it is 5-5. I cannot get streaming video and customer support is nowhere to be found. I sent them a complaint but cannot find a phone number. PLEASE HELP. GO METS
Kicks butt!!!!
Joebaseball 5.0 stars Version: 1.3.0
This app simply kicks butt. The game day audio feature is the coolest thing ever. I don't know what these people are talking about. There are still two games for free every day.
Completely satisfied
drabenau 5.0 stars Version: 1.3.0
When this app first came out, I wrote a scathing review. I couldn't get Gameday Audio (it never worked), but shortly thereafter they got all the bugs worked out and this is review is replacing my previous one. This is simply my favorite iPhone app. If you're into baseball (or even just your home team) I can't imagine that you wouldn't feel that this app is more than worth the price.
Read the Description
jminear 5.0 stars Version: 1.3.0
How come no one reads the description? You don't get every game video for $10. You get one or two as a BONUS (App was originally $10 with NO VIDEO). The audio is great! The video is great (especially over wifi)! As a satisfied MLB.tv subscriber (different, folks, than the app!) I love yet another bonus AT NO ADDITIONAL COST (App + MLB.tv subscription already purchased) in every game live video. Generous, in my opinion. As to battery- has nothing to do with MLB. iPhone limitation. As to blackouts- MLB can't break it's local market blackouts. It's out of their hands, at least until they renegotiate their contracts with every single local market. Several local providers (Yankees) are now offering games over the Internet for local cable subscribers (do some research folks). Thanks for a great product MLB. Go Rockies! Glad I get to catch all the games here in Hawaii!
Great, great app
Pauley D 5.0 stars Version: 1.20
This app was built by people who obviously love both baseball and the iPhone. Free upgrade to streaming video broadcasts? Who does that? Apparently MLB. On my fairly regular 240 mile round trips across upstate New York, I experience 2 dropouts for perhaps 30 seconds each. I find that remarkable. Hook it up to my Prius' audio system and it sounds better than radio.
Great... But for $10..?
Glpon 3.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
I wish we could get more up-to-date scores and same with the pitching and htting in the gameday view. Great app, lacking in many areas. Also audio issues. Would pay more if app was faster to update and I could listen in... My friend was smart and got it for $5... Hope to see updates soon!! :)
A Must For Any Baseball Fan
SoxFanInGill 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
MLB.com At Bat 2009 offers similar features (like box score) to many other apps, including Sportstacular and SportsTap. However, At Bat also gives the user the chance to listen live to any game in progress, as well as follow the game live in the Gamecast, with the former feature alone being well worth the (relatively) cheap price of $9.99. Apps such as WunderRadio are not permitted to broadcast MLB game's play-by-play, something I've always found frustrating, but one battle at a time. The app does, admittedly, have a few bugs, such as the constant crashing when you press the "Back" button, but I am sure they will be dealt with, since the MLB has nothing to gain from frustrating their fans. All in all, this app is a must for any baseball fan, no matter the price.
Great App... in Theory.
Great App... in Theory. 2.0 stars Version: 1.0
...but apparently not in practice. Perhaps version 1.1 will be a tad bit better, but until then, save your money. To put it in perspective, I've had my iPhone for a little over a year now. In that time, I've had to reset the phone 2 times total (both were reception/network related). Since I've had this app installed (for 4 days now), I've had to reset my iPhone 7 times. For some reason, it likes to lose connection to the games as you're listening to them, and then not recover. Subsequent attempts to load the application result in hanging and or immediate crashes.
Buggy - can't hear the audio - waste of money
Chris In Florida 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
In spite of numerous requests to fix the bugs, they still live (such as the application exiting when going back).
Amazing
rainmaker707 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Amazing, just downloaded this app last night, and tested out the audio, perfect. Crystal clear on my ipod touch using wifi. The sound is a little low, but hooked up to my speakers to amp up the sound takes care of that. Totally worth the $10. Definitely buy.
GREAT
Tha Numba One Football Playa 5.0 stars Version: 1.2.1
I have an Ipod 1st Gen, and with the Update, I can FINALLY stream live games. By far the best Sports App Out there. 5 STARS
Nicely done.
cjames1966 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Jaxson, go to settings and you can adjust those settings. I particularly appreciate the fact that there is not a blackout restriction on this app. I would like to see video in a future version too. Great value for the price, I was expecting it to be more expensive.
Two free games!!!
Bravesfan222 5.0 stars Version: 1.3.0
Looks like MLB is giving two games again! And one game is my Braves. I've seen some amazing quality over my wii connection, so I'm guessing the people with bad quality have bad connections. A must buy for any baseball fan! The only question that remains is should I spring for MLB.tv?
Great App, MLB Blackouts make it nearly useless
jcderr 3.0 stars Version: 1.4.0
This app is awesome if you want to keep up with a team no where near where you are. Red Sox fan in Georgia? Great! Giants fan in Missouri? Go for it?
Don't update to the newest version
cardarelli 1.0 stars Version: 1.3.0
Once I updated, I lost the ability to watch TV games. Now they want up to $70 / yr to watch games. Give me a break. I won't be purchasing MLB in 2010. Keep version 1.2 and enjoy.
