Favorite Four iPhone Utilities
Calendar16 Wed, 30 Nov 2011 18:30:41 UTC +00:00
By Lisa Caplan on November 30th, 2011 A look at our favorite four classic iPhone utilities for everyday use. It’s surprising sometimes, after accumulating so many apps, to see what we actually use on a regular basis. While setting up so many new iPhones recently, we really had to think – in a post iOS 5 world that rendered many staples obsolete – which of the dozens of utility apps we’ve stockpiled we still actually use. Here are our favorite four “classics” that we can’t get through most days without. Flashlight If you have an iPhone or iPod touch with a front-facing camera, no flashlight app we have seen is better or simpler than this one. The app uses the LED camera flash and a simple slider as a switch to provide bright reliable illumination in dark parking lots, while stumbling for door keys after a late night, or when trying Read More

Welcome to our weekly installment of Picks of the Week at iSource where we provide our expanded coverage of Apple accessories and applications  Here we will promote our favorite iPhone, iPad, iPod, Mac and Apple TV related items, as well as bring you occasional tips and tricks.  Hopefully many of our favorite items will also be of interest to you. Please feel free to comment on our selections, and suggest picks of your own.  Check out this week’s picks after the break Picked by: Jay My pick this week isn’t a new app, but it has a shiny new place for me in my iPhone/iPad life. Why you may ask? Well, yes I read the Lifehacker review comparing Shazam vs. SoundHound (also making its way on to our own site here) where they gave a slight nod to SoundHound for its overall accuracy. However, the hidden gem in my opinion is Read More

To the developers
Routb3d 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
This is an excellent application for the iPad. I would love to see a fully configurable multitouch gesture interface for your app that controls macs and PCs. Have you ever heard of fingerworks? They developed an excellent system for multitouch gestural computing. Apple purchased fingerworks and has been drip feeding the technology to consumers since the iPhone. I believe you are in a perfect position to jump ahead and emulate the fingerworks touch stream keyboard on the iPad. I don't have enough room here to go into details about just how advanced fingerworks was before they were shuttered. Please have a look.. Look up fingerfans and fingerworks. More gestures please.. On a different note: you shouldn't keep putting the keyboard away every time you want to move the cursor. The app should be able to tell the difference between a key strike and a mouse motion.
Wait for future releases
Aeolian75 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
I too got this app because I thought it would be as well planned as the iPhone app. It is all blurry and the functionality, as previous posts point out, seems poorly thought out. Wait until they fix this if your interested. It has sooo much potential, but it's not there yet...
Major disappointment on iPad
ABC App hater 1.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
They took away the mouse buttons so you can no longer drag icons or set sliders. I loved the old version on the iPhone because it had the buttons. I was excited to get the iPad version and was majorly disappointed. You would think that it would have been easy to add an option to turn the buttons on or off as they had the code already from the iPhone version. This app had promise but I wouldn't buy it until they fix the button issue or it is free.
Good app now that it's fixed
Nickxxs 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
When I first bought the app I had some major lag issues when Bluetooth was turned on but it looks like they fixed it...still problem with the windows server tho because it won't work if u have a computer with multiple ip addresses.
Well done and better than on iPhone
ericwastaken 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
I love this app and used the iPhone version it to control my media center. Now with iPad the experience is so much better. Great job! Also the developer is always updating and enhancing the app.
Minor errors but great
thedude420 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
I agree with everyone else about the it being rushed and not well thought out, but besides the those minor things it is great. Wait for update! ALSO, the period key on the keyboard is incorrect, when pushed you get a < . Not sure what that is called but I call it an alligator mouth. The keyboard needs tweaks!
iPad & Pad Mouse
Ptang 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
It seems to work and set up properly however the iPad app doesn't Seem to have the same functionality as the iPhone version. TheRE doesn'T sEem to be a manual on the web site. My only real complaint Is that whenever i pause typing for more then a second or two It capitalizes the next letter. This hapPens Even in the middle of a word. The only solution i have found is typing without stopping, and of course thats not practical, i'M sure they'll fix it. When they get this up to the level the iphone app is on i'm sure it'lL be a winner and I'll adjust my rating.
Meh
Sammi675 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
Had promise, disconnects to much to be all that useful. Fun to play with though. Should be free till it actually works right.
Not responsive
Simbp 2.0 stars Version: 1.0
Altough the connection is "green" the mouse is not responsive at all, lagging a lot! I am back to using the air mouse iphone app on the ipad that is much more responsive... Useless purchase.
Not as good as iPhone app
Bart Szyszka 2.0 stars Version: 1.0
I bought this app expecting it to be as good as its iPhone sibling, Air Mouse Pro. Unfortunately this iPad version feels very poorly thought-out and rushed. It's completely unusable horizontally if you want to type something. Its controls also look blurry, like the images used in them were scaled up versions of the ones used in Air Mouse. The addition to the regular keyboard also takes up a lot of space (how do I toggle it off?) and the buttons are poorly organized and crammed together. How about instead of tacking all those buttons on top of the keyboard, they just have one extra row like the iPad version with a button giving you an alternate keyboard with the F1-F12 keys? I liked that the iPhone version had the control/command/shift keys separate from the other ones and clearly distinguishable since those buttons are used frequently. I also don't understand why they took out the option to have a right-click and scrolling area when this app has more room to work with (I wasn't a fan of tapping with two fingers on the iPhone and am still not on the iPad). There's so much potential to make this app better than the iPhone version. Hopefully they clean it up in future versions.
It's good
Aaronthomas1989 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
Though it needs right and left click buttons added.
A+ Great App!
NizZ8 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
Used it a ton on the iphone and is even better for the iPad! Thanks!
The best just got bigger and better!!
Sam799057 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
I've always been a big fan of Mobile Air Mouse, so getting this was a no brainer. This program looks and works amazingly well on the iPad. I love the new layout, you get a lot more space and don't have to keep switching between screens. The remotes come up as needed and go away on their own when they are not. Setup was a breeze, it automatically connects very fast when you start the app. Very satisfied, a must buy for all iPad owners! How could you not love this???
Works perfectly
Bitsrfr 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
I held off buying this for a few days because of the negative reviews. I use it on my iPhone and it works great, finally bought it for iPad and it works just as perfectly.
Perfect!!!
Yehushua follower 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
This app absolutely works! iCal notifications display, multi-touch gestures, iTunes controls, and on and on and on!!! For the negative reviews: Do your homework and follow the developer's directions. After downloading the server app to my computer, I literally had this up and running in less than two minutes. Buy this app and enjoy the slickest remote for your computer!!
finally an app worth every penny
Not cheap not stupid 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
The description Says it all, would buythis overand over again lol, dont get any ideas itunes, already bought this twice... Butif you are hooking up to a tv this app is mandatory
Still don't work
av_roller 1.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
Waste of money.
Good for now
Irish link 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
I agree with the statement that the icons look as if they were upscaled. The biggest difference for me is the way the mouse actually moves. On the phone i would have had to increase the sensitivity. It actually feels like I have the entire monitor to move the mouse. (because I do) Upside : The main use will be HTPC and this will make it so I don't need a full keyboard and mouse to clutter the living room. This will be the best purchase for of everything that I have seen on the app store. This combined with an xbmc remote will be the ultimate htpc controller. Best of all i can surf the web on the big screen and share what i find with everyone around me thanks to this. Downside: For everything it has it also lacks. The best thing and the worst thing for me is that its just a giant glorified mouse. There doesn't seem to be enough difference from this to the air mouse for the iPhone. Shouldn't need to pay more than 2 in my opinion. The app launcher at the bottom is nice but as it has been said before its a little blurry. The media controller doesn't seem to work with "media player classic" (win) like the air mouse did. Haven't tried others yet. All in all I am "okay" with what I got and if you have the extra money to waist then go for it. If not then go get the free version of air mouse and it will do about the same thing just a little differently. At least until and upgrade comes out.
Feedback lag limits true potential
RDucati 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
Installation and set-up of the two applications (one for desktop; one on ipad) was very easy. Great instructions on their website. But I found considerable lag between ipad inputs and reaction on the desktop. I can imagine a few uses for this app on my ipad even with that lag but the app is not a replacement for keyboard/mouse yet.
Great App With little improvement nEeded
systalik 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
this app is very well made, Sometimes it has some lag when the network is under load like at a school network, but i have seen no lag so far while connected with my home network. I would recommend it to people who prefer a touchpad rather than a mouse especially Since it has a keyboard buit in, The only problem is that it will Capitalize The next lettter typed if you pause for a Short while
Not like the iPhone app
xXThe WallXx 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
I use the iPhone version daily and was very excited to see an iPad version, but the keyboard is completely messed up. It types special characters I stead of numbers and wants to capitalize a letter is you pause during typing. Safari opened a new tab anytime I clicked on a bookmark. Like I said the iPhone version is great and hope the developer will update this soon. It has potential to be a great app like the iPhone version but as it is now it was a waste of money.
Works pretty well, you might want to wait for some improvements
SingLow 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
If you would like to use your iPad as a wireless input device, this seems to be the best option for now. Turn off your bluetooth in the iPad as it causes lag. I hope to see this app mature into something much more useful.
works fine for me
cpnyc23 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
I don't know what some of these negative reviews are about... the app immediately found my computer (I use the phone app as well). works like a charm.
Wait
Julian81 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
It's not finished yet, most functions are not working proper. The main function, scrolling with your mouse is bugged. Just wait for future release!
