Daily iPhone App: Road Trip Weather
Calendar16 Thu, 05 Jan 2012 22:00:00 UTC +00:00
There are plenty of weather apps, and lots of navigation apps, but there are few apps that allow you to plan a road trip taking current conditions or forecasts into consideration. Road Trip Weather does that. The US $0.99 app allows you to input your current location or starting point, a mid-point on your trip, and your destination. After some quick calculations, a map will show your route and some color codes will show good weather, bad weather, and weather that is worth noting. If you click on a point on the map, you'll get some details about conditions. This app is not a navigation app, just a quick way to get an idea what to expect. You can set it for a start time on the current day, the next day, or the following day. I found the information accurate and a good place to turn if you are planning Read More

NAVIGON launched the second generation of its iPhone navigation app, which “completely redefines core elements of iPhone navigation,” including a new map management function and an in app purchase option for quarterly map updates. As a result, users will be able to choose which map regions to download to their device, thus saving some storage space of their iPhone. Moreover, separating the app and maps also simplifies future updates, as users can update the app (about 40MB) without reinstalling the maps multiple times. For instance, users who own the USA version can pick the states they want immediately and download additional regions at a later time. NAVIGON 2.0 is also the first iPhone navigation app to offer quarterly map updates. The FreshMaps service uses map and POI database from NAVTEQ to ensure the most accurate data possible. In addition, this release of NAVIGON also comes with some UI improvements. It is Read More
Navigon 2.0 for iPhone offers new name, download options
Calendar16 Thu, 17 Nov 2011 16:00:00 UTC +00:00
Updated to include force-quit fix for missing favorites. If you're already a Navigon GPS app owner you'll find a significant free update at the app store today. If you haven't chosen a GPS navigation solution yet, Navigon has given you good reason to check the product out. Navigon 2.0 is a complete rethink of the app, with new GUI elements, and the ability to selectively download just the states you want maps for. Never get to the West coast? Save space by not putting those maps on your iPhone at all. Users of the North America and USA versions in particular will benefit, so map storage can be measured in megabytes rather than gigabytes. Even owners of the regional versions can save a lot of storage space. The result is a lot of extra room on your iPhone or iPad for music, movies, or apps. Even better for fence sitters, Navigon Read More
Since its release, Navigon’s MobileNavigator has been at the forefront of the Navigation category in Apple’s iOS App Store. It was the first of the name brand apps to be released for the iPhone, and it has stayed ahead of the pack, at least as far as features were concerned, ever since. MobileNavigator has also lead in another respect that isn’t so positive- size. The country and continent versions of the app come in well over the competition, which aren’t exactly small themselves. Sure, you’ve got all of those wonderful features, but when you only have 8 or 16 GB of space on your iOS device, giving up over 2 GB to one app is a hard pill to swallow. Well, Navigon is out in front of the pack again with their latest upgrade to version 2.0 of MobileNavigator. Now, you can add or subtract individual state maps at will so Read More
5 apps for the Zombie Apocalypse
Calendar16 Fri, 28 Oct 2011 16:00:00 UTC +00:00
It's much harder to put together a 5 Apps post for the Zombie Apocalypse than you might think. Do we focus on serious topics like first aid, or do we try to inject a little humor like Plants vs. Zombies for "training skills"? In the end, we came to the conclusion that this was simply too complex a topic to limit to just five app titles. We give you five app topics instead -- and we've skipped the entertainment component. In that spirit of deadly serious preparedness training, we give you "5 App Categories for the Zombie Apocalypse." First Aid The app store is brimming with first aid applications. We liked the free Know-it-All First Aid refresher app, which seems to have plenty of good reviews and cover the basics. Other well-reviewed apps included Pocket First Aid and CPR ($3.99), and Emergency First Aid & Treatment Guide ($0.99). Emergency health response Read More
NAVIGON Announces Next Generation Navigation Apps

By Rob LeFebvre on September 6th, 2011 GPS app provider NAVIGON announces a significant update cum redefinition of their already popular GPS apps. NAVIGON AG, one of the big navigation companies out there, announced this past THursday not just an update, but a full re-definition of their smartphone navigation software, available for the iPhone and other smartphone platforms, including Android (now) and Windows Phone 7 (later this year). “Over the last two years, we’ve continuously added new features to our navigation apps, transforming them into the most feature-rich smartphone GPS apps available,” said Gerhard Mayr, NAVIGON vice-president of worldwide mobile phones and new markets. “For our new generation of apps, we went back to the drawing board to see how we could elevate smartphone navigation to the next level. Feedback from our users suggests that a better way to manage and update maps and a more intuitive user interface are top Read More
I've looked at Where To? before and found it to be a handy, easy to use local guide when I'm looking for anything from Art Galleries to the Zoo. It has info on nearby food, shopping, health care and attractions. The latest version of this app has added improvements to the animations in augmented reality mode, a new direction indicator, and support for Google Earth. It has connectivity to the Motion X GPS program for directions in addition to the existing TomTom and Navigon apps. Where To? also adds store hours when provided by a business. I found that many entries had that information. There's no shortage of these local info apps, and I've always liked Around Me which has some similar capabilities but without the links to nav apps. I like the improvements in this version of the Where To? app. It is an 11 MB download, works in 10 Read More
GPS Bookmarker Allows You to Save Locations on Your iPhone
Calendar16 Tue, 03 May 2011 21:00:12 UTC +00:00
We’ve reported in the past that Apple is looking to update the Maps app in iOS. Outside of turn-by-turn directions and Street View, the application is fairly limited in its current form. This has allowed other companies like Navigon and TomTom to compete in the App Store with their GPS applications, derived from years of navigation experience. If Apple is looking to compete with the heavyweights, they really need to beef up the Maps app’s feature set. Obviously we all hope to see spoken turn-by-turn directions added, but what other functions would you want in an iOS navigation app? Personally, I wouldn’t mind Apple improving the bookmarking option. Over the last few weeks I have been apartment hunting. In a larger city, trying to find a place to live amongst hundreds of different places can be a daunting task. Not only are you looking to stay in a certain price range, Read More
iPhone navigation in the back country
Calendar16 Sat, 12 Mar 2011 13:00:00 UTC +00:00
I've written before about navigating with the iPhone, and the differences between having the maps on board your phone versus downloading them over the air. The differences were readily obvious on my recent photo trek to the Monument Valley area on the Arizona and Utah border. About 30 miles south of Kayenta, I fired up the Garmin GPS app. It needs an internet connection to work, and none were available. In that part of the country, AT&T has nothing, so when I had any signal at all, I was roaming. You can see the result in the gallery -- a blank screen with a car icon (not much help). No maps, no destination information, nothing. I then fired up my Navigon app, and even though there was no voice or data service, I had a detailed map because the map info was on the phone. Apps like Navigon still use the Read More
Navigation app sales and Verizon friendliness

There's a flurry of GPS related news today, so let's get right on with it. First, one of our favorite nav apps, Navigon, is having a pretty big sale to celebrate its milestone of 2 million sales worldwide. Current users can take advantage of the promotion as well, with prices for in-app purchases of Traffic Live, Panorama View 3D and Zagat Survey for MobileNavigator iPhone at 25 percent off. On the TomTom front, that excellent nav solution is on sale for $34.99 for the US version. The US-Canada app is $39.99. The sale has no end date. TomTom also notes that new iPhone users on Verizon will be seeing a "connect to GPS" warning when they start up. Read More

I don’t think there was any question as to if Garmin would release an iPhone app, it was more of just a question of when. After dragging their feet for what seemed like an eternity, Garmin has finally released its first iPhone navigation app, entitled StreetPilot. Is it too late for the company who is widely considered to be the best manufacturer of stand alone GPS systems, or can they sway customers away from Navigon and TomTom? Oddly enough, the app has been available for some time now, since December 23, 2010. Understandably, Garmin decided that CES was the place to make the best splash with an announcement; hence the announcement was saved for today. The first thing that stands out to me is the lack of different SKU’s for the different regions of the United States; Navigon does something similar, and Tom Tom offers different apps for different countries. Thus far, it seems Read More
Navigon today released version 1.70 of the MyRegion versions of our top rated GPS app. The North America, USA version and Canada version updates will follow shortly. The USA only version is discounted $15.00 to $34.99, as is the Canada only version. The MyRegion apps, covering the East, Central or Western U.S. have been discounted $5.00 to $24.99. No date has been offered as to when the Canada, North America and U.S. apps will get this update, but it should be soon. Purchasers of those versions will get the update at no charge when it's available. Current owners of the Navigon apps will also get the updates for free. For now, these updates only apply to the North American versions of the apps. Navigon is Read More
App Showdown: TomTom vs. Navigon

Posted 12/14/2010 at 9:50am | by Matthew Tilmann As blizzards and the like bear down on the nation, sometimes traveling can get a little dicey, and it can be easy to lose where you're at.  Granted, you could probably just pull over and open a map, but why not let your iPhone do that for you?  We highlight two apps that are the leaders, Navigon's MobileNavigator North America, and TomTom's U.S. & Canada app. Before we get going, when it comes to GPS apps, one of the largest questions most have is, "how much is this gonna cost me?" As of the time of this writing, Navigon and TomTom are both at $59.99 USD.  Let's get driving! When Navigon's app first came out, many were leery of it, because of the fact that Navigon's portable devices came to an abrupt halt in the US, so many wondered if the app would Read More

Save 50 percent on MobileNavigator GPS apps
Calendar16 Fri, 13 Aug 2010 12:00:00 UTC +00:00
Navigon's MobileNavigator packs more features than just about any other GPS app--and it's on sale for half off. Standalone GPS navigators are pretty cheap these days, but when it comes to getting the most bang for the buck, it's hard to beat an app-equipped iPhone. One of the most popular navigation apps for the iPhone, Navigon's MobileNavigator North America, normally sells for $79.99, but in honor of the company's first-year App Store anniversary, it's on sale for $39.99. This half-off sale, which is good through Sunday, August 15, also extends to MobileNavigator USA (now $24.99); MobileNavigator Canada ($24.99); and MyRegion East, Central, and West ($14.99 each, down from $29.99). Navigon has discounted its prices for in-app purchases as well. Traffic Live, normally $24.99, is on sale for $12.99, while Panorama View 3D, which shows a more topographical view of your surroundings--and looks really cool--is now just $4.99. Epic Follow-Up Review: Navigon MobileNavigator for iPhone

On the road with the latest Navigon MobileNavigator
Calendar16 Mon, 12 Jul 2010 15:00:00 UTC +00:00
The iOS 4 update to MobileNavigator North America has been eagerly awaited by fans of the best selling turn-by-turn navigation system, and overall I'd call the update a win. To test the system, I took a drive from Southern Arizona to Chandler, a suburb of Phoenix. First off, having the multitasking capabilities was wonderful. I could take or make calls without stopping the route guidance, and while I was on the phone, I could get notice of turns. Since my phone was connected to my car via Bluetooth, the voice announcements came through the car speaker. I set up speed limit warnings, and the system dutifully warned me if I was going too fast, which is easy to do on those long, straight Arizona highways. Furthermore, getting the current conditions on a long trip means that the info will be out of date when you arrive. It would be more helpful Read More

By Chris Hall on July 10th, 2010 NAVIGON Mobile Navigator gets a huge update for iOS4 / iPhone 4 and much more. NAVIGON Mobile Navigator, judging by our review of the app, as well as the reviews from many other app publications, is one of the top GPS apps in the App Store. Last night, it was updated to add some more great tweaks to its already impressive software. The new update, version 1.6.0, includes “Live Weather, Clever Parking, updated NAVTEQ maps, Destination Information Display, Pedestrian Mode Voice Guidance, Enhanced Reality View™ Pro, and iOS4 integration / multitasking”. In order to get you where you want to go “stress-free and on time”, the apps new “Live Weather” feature provides “temperature and weather condition icons (that) appear in the route overview screen before and during navigation”. Also now with the “Clever Parking” feature. “When approaching the destination, a “P” icon appears in Read More
The popular Navigon app for the iPhone has had a significant update which is likely to please current owners and may get the company some new sales as well. New features include Live Weather (which gives the current weather wherever you're going), parking information, iOS 4 integration -- including background navigation and Retina Display enhancements), and updates to the NAVTEQ maps included. Additionally, there are some nice changes and improvements to the graphics, so this is a fairly substantial update. Read on for a little more insight. The 3D Panorama view that shows topographic features had broken on the new retina displays, and now it renders properly on the higher resolution iPhone 4 screens. Pricing has been adjusted downward. The US $79.99 US and Canada version are now $49.99 for the next 12 days. The US MyRegion versions are $17.99, down from the regular $29.99. Buyers of the regional apps will Read More

First day thoughts on iPhone 4
Calendar16 Fri, 25 Jun 2010 01:00:00 UTC +00:00
The day has finally come. After 2 1/2 hours in the reserved line, I was able to walk out with the iPhone 4 up and running, albeit without contacts, music, videos or my app collection. Getting it home and synced was uneventful. iTunes detected the new phone and dutifully restored everything. A couple of reminders, however: First, some passwords won't survive the sync. I had to sign on to Pandora again, enter my email passwords once more, and tell my Navigon app that I did indeed purchase traffic and panorama view maps. Tapping their icons re-loaded them, but the panorama maps don't display properly just yet, while the regular 2D and 3D maps work just fine. Hopefully this will be part of a Navigon update that includes multitasking. Oh, and your Bluetooth devices will have to be re-paired as well. Speed increases are pretty obvious and very welcome. I could easily Read More

Next update to Navigon app will multitask on iOS 4
Calendar16 Sat, 19 Jun 2010 15:30:00 UTC +00:00
Navigation is one of the iPhone app categories that will really benefit from multitasking, and Navigon will shortly release a free update to provide that highly desired functionality. You can leave the app when a call comes in, and when you end the call you'll still be navigating. Better yet, any voice alerts will be heard while you are on a call. The US and Canada version will be updated first, with the regional versions of the apps to follow shortly. Navigon has continued to be very aggressive in delivering features, and this latest update will be an important leap forward. No release date has been announced yet for the 1.6 update, but it's in review with Apple now. If you'd like to see the new features in action, Navigon has posted a video of the new version in operation. I can't wait for this update, and I expect I'm not Read More
Navigon Demos Multitasking Support For MobileNavigator
Calendar16 Fri, 18 Jun 2010 20:17:36 UTC +00:00
iOS 4 will be launching in the next few days and with it will come multitasking.  As we noted yesterday, some developers have already gotten updates with the long-awaited capability approved and into the App Store, while others are still working on getting it implemented.  One of those still-working developers is Navigon, whose MobileNavigator will soon be getting multitasking support — just like TomTom — and they have decided to demo how the feature works. In the video embedded below, Navigon’s head of iNavigation from Germany, Bernd Hahn, demonstrates how MobileNavigator won’t stop giving you your all-important directions when you receive a phone call or when you need to access other apps. Navigon hasn’t announced a specific release date for MobileNavigator v1.6 thanks to the many other features that will be making their way into the update in addition to multitasking, but the team hopes to have the update submitted within the Read More
Just in time for those summer vacations, Navigon has dropped the price of the full North American version to U.S. $49.99. That's a 30 dollar savings. Of all the GPS apps I've tested, I found the Navigon app to be the most full-featured and accurate. The screen is very clear and it is easy to use the many features included. I especially like the display of speed limits, and the ability to get a warning if I go over. Text-to-speech is very clear, and local search, which uses Google, is very handy and keeps the points of interest information up to date. You can also enhance the app with additional purchases of live traffic info, and a 3D panorama view that shows you the contours of the geography you are driving through. Navigon updates Mobile Navigator North America
Calendar16 Tue, 30 Mar 2010 15:00:00 UTC +00:00
These Navigon guys really do constant upgrades and enhancements of this popular app. Today, the US$79.99 North American version of the Navigon iPhone app has added connections to Facebook and Twitter, along with Navigon MyRoutes. According to the company, MyRoutes recommendations are based on the personal driving behavior of the user, the day of the week, and the time of day. MyRoutes always shows the best possible route for the driver on the basis of his or her driving behavior and by means of an optical "MyRoute" indicator. In addition to this recommended route, up to two alternatives are displayed. Also added is the option to buy Panorama View 3D, which gives you a more topographic view of the terrain based on NASA data. That option is an in-app $9.99 purchase. The 3D views require an additional 580 MB download. The Panorama, Facebook, and Twitter features will be coming to the Read More
This is it MobileNavigator users, this is what you have all been waiting for since mid-February. Today Navigon’s MobileNavigator v1.5 update was released, unleashing three new features which include Facebook and Twitter connectivity, 3D in-map views, and personalized routes. MobileNavigator‘s new social feature allows you to post your current position, destination, and estimated time of arrival to your Facebook or Twitter feeds, all without causing an interruption in the navigation process. MobileNavigator v1.5 also adds MyRoutes, or simply put, personalized routes. This feature analyzes your driving habits, patterns, location, and the time/day to provide you with up to three routes to choose from along with an estimated time of arrival, distance, and driving time for each of those routes. The third new feature comes at a cost, but that doesn’t make it any less worthy. Panorama View 3D gives you true 3D in-map views of the terrain ahead of you by Read More
Navigon launches regional nav apps at lower prices
Calendar16 Tue, 16 Mar 2010 20:30:00 UTC +00:00
If you've been lusting after the Navigon apps for your iPhone, the company has just released lower-priced regional versions that divide the country into three sections and let you add other parts of the U.S. with an in-app purchase. You can now buy Western states, Central U.S. or Eastern states as standalone regions. The single region version is US$24.99 until April 12, when the price goes up to $29.99. If you buy one region, you can add another region for $12.99 each. These new versions contain all the features of the Navigon U.S. and Canada version. All versions include the new MyRoutes feature. Navigon MyRoutes learns from the user's driving style to provide customized and better route recommendations. The feature also offers up to two alternative routes clearly displayed on a map including ETA, distance and driving time. This lets users choose the route that best serves their individual situation. The Read More
We told you it was coming, and now it has arrived. The popular US$59.95 TomTom app is ready to hit the road with real time traffic available as an additional in-app purchase. Included with the 1.3 update at no additional charge is Google local search, revised map data, music fading, automatic day and night mode based on your location, and the ability to add locations from other applications. The real time traffic option has some nice features. Updates are received every 3 minutes. If a delay along your route is found, you will get notification from the app and automatically be re-routed. The not-so-great feature is that the traffic info will set you back $19.95 for 12 months of information. By contrast, when I reviewed the live traffic option on the Navigon app in November, it was a one time price of $19.95. The Navigon app itself is 10 bucks more Read More

The Myth of iPhone App Piracy [IPhone Apps]
Calendar16 Mon, 01 Mar 2010 17:00:00 UTC +00:00
People rarely talk about iPhone app piracy, but when they do, it sounds devastating: 90% piracy rates, $450 million in lost sales, etc. Here's the truth: App Store piracy isn't a big deal—and it never will be. With these shockingly high reports comes the general air that developers are being marauded and pillaged by Viking hordes and that Apple isn't doing enough to stop it. This resonates! Developers don't control much about the App Store, so if the entire app protection system has been cracked—which it has—you'd expect the looting to be wholesale; the impact on developers to be immediate and devastating; and the problem to be grave indeed. And yet the piracy issue seems to be dying. The story behind the lack of a story, it turns out, is that iPhone piracy is nowhere near as serious as many people say it is, and that before long, it may not Read More
Macworld Expo 2010: Cool Product Finds From the Show Floor
Calendar16 Mon, 01 Mar 2010 13:45:48 UTC +00:00
I saw some great products at the recent Macworld expo. Here are a few items that grabbed my attention. Navigon for iPhone: The latest release of Navigon MobileNavigator for iPhone has added a new panorama 3D view that uses terrain elevation data from NASA. The feature is available via in-app purchase. I also got a hands-on demo of the MyRoutes feature which will show you three different route choices to find the best combination of speed and distance for you. DJay Software with Spin Controller: The thing I love about the Djay Software with the Spin hardware controller is that it is a real DJ system for the Mac. It’s not a game like DJ Hero or something. You can spin records right from your iTunes library. You get some added digital benefits like automatic tempo matching so you can concentrate more on the music and less on the technical bits Read More

Navigon GPS iPhone App Gets Twitter and Facebook Support

by Navigon’s MobileNavigator, one of the first iPhone apps to offer real turn-by-turn GPS navigation, has established itself as one of the best such applications available for Apple’s smartphone. The latest version of the app (available here) has an option to alert your buddies to your current location via Facebook or Twitter. It also adds an option called MyRoutes, which enables you to create custom routes according to your needs and habits. Finally, Panorama View 3D gives you a 3D terrain view, based on NASA’s data. The price of the app itself is currently $20 cheaper than before: $69.99. However, if you want live traffic information that’ll cost you an extra $19.99 (promotional price, applies only until the 15th of February), and the Panorama View 3D will cost you an additional $9.99. Put all that together, and it’s 100 bucks; not exactly cheap, but it’ll definitely buy you a full-featured navigation Read More
Navigon MobileNavigator Goes 3D, Social, and Intelligent

By Rene Ritchie, Tuesday, Feb 9, 2010 | And now we can tell you why Navigon is so excited about their new 3D terrain viewing, social media integrated, intelligent routing version 1.5 update to MobileNavigator [$69.00 on sale -- iTunes link] that they’ve put it on sale and are giving TiPb readers a chance to not only win copies, but get a guided tour at Macworld 2010 on how to use it. Here are the highlights: Connection to Facebook and Twitter: A simple icon tap posts users current position, destination, and ETA without navigation interruption. NAVIGON MyRoutes: Analyzes driving habits, patterns, location, time/day and provides up to three routes clearly displayed in-map with ETA, distance and driving times for each. NAVIGON, developers of the MobileNavigator have introduced a significant update to their feature-rich navigation app. New key features include the following: While I haven’t got my hands on this app (yet), I’m intrigued by the 3D terrain view. It promises to ‘deliver an accurate depiction of surrounding environment, and what lies ahead with digital landscapes that include elevations, shadows, and geographic images’. Neat-o. The NAVIGON MyRoutes system also takes directions to a higher standard. The route recommendations given are customized for you and your location based on driving data, driving habits, day of the week, and more. So how much does it cost? Normally you would be asked to throw down $89.99 in the App Store for this bad boy. However, during MacWorld (Feb. 11-13) a special promotion price of $69.99 will be available (actually, the sale price ends on Feb. 15). If you happen to be heading down for Macworld, Read More

Review: On the road with the Magellan Premium Car Kit
Calendar16 Fri, 22 Jan 2010 21:30:00 UTC +00:00
Magellan was nice enough to loan me a Premium Car Kit for the iPhone or iPod touch, so I put it in the car and drove around on both city streets and highways to get an idea how it worked, particularly with the excellent Magellan Road Mate software [iTunes link]. The Magellan kit is advertised to work with most other GPS apps, and can be used with many iPhone cases so you don't have to pull your iPhone out of a case to get it into the cradle. Setting up was easy: just plug in the cigarette lighter power adapter, plug the other end of that cable into the cradle, and using the provided suction cup to attach it to your glass windshield. I was able to do that without incident. When the unit powers up, it is automatically in pairing mode, and my iPhone found it quickly and paired. I Read More
AroundMe has always been a pretty decent free ad-based app for finding points of interest around you and providing more detailed information for those locations, but yesterday it got even better thanks to the addition of an augmented reality view, MobileNavigator integration, and an improved map compass. Cheap GPS: Gokivo app drops to 99 cents
Calendar16 Mon, 04 Jan 2010 20:00:00 UTC +00:00
Just to clarify, that 99 cents buys you 30 days' worth of navigation (complete with real-time traffic). After that, Gokivo will cost you $4.99 per month or $39.99 if you pay annually (a considerable savings). It will cost you more over the long haul than a flat-rate app like CoPilot or MobileNavigator, but Gokivo might be a more attractive option for infrequent drivers--since there's no contract, no commitment. If you're like me and only occasionally need turn-by-turn navigation assistance, you can, literally, pay as you go. Gokivo now supports in-app transactions, so if you're leaving for a road trip or happen to get lost somewhere, just tap out $4.99 and presto: You've got another month of GPS. If you want to learn about the app's navigation acumen, read Dong Ngo's recent comparison of Gokivo and MapQuest (another subscription-based solution). But I think with an entry point of just 99 cents and Read More

Navigon drops price but fumbles Google integration
Calendar16 Thu, 17 Dec 2009 20:45:00 UTC +00:00
The Navigon Mobile Navigator [iTunes link] has become my favorite GPS app for the car. Great graphics, text-to-speech, auto night mode, and traffic integration. Today, Navigon dropped the price 30 dollars to U.S. $59.99 and added Google search. That's a great idea, because the self contained GPS apps have static databases that tend to age quickly. Navigon solved that problem by integrating a Google search to their app, which gives you the advantages of on-board maps coupled with the most up to date POI information. That's the good news. The bad news [see update note at the bottom of this post] is this first integration of Google into the app is an utter bomb. I selected POI from the menu, then Google. I then typed in 'pizza' and hit search. The query returned a 'no POI in your area' message, yet I was about 200 yards from a Pizza Hut. I Read More
Navigon MobileNavigator Gets Updated And Goes On Sale
Calendar16 Thu, 17 Dec 2009 18:54:01 UTC +00:00
It looks like Navigon isn’t going to let TomTom win the iPhone navigation app popularity contest without a fight. Navigon has decided to respond to TomTom’s recent app addition and price drop with an addition (an update) and price drop of their own. Navigon MobileNavigator North America and MobileNavigator Europe were recently updated to v1.4, which adds tons of new features and reduces the time it takes for the app to launch. Some of the new features include a turn-by-turn route list, Google local search, coordinate input, manual zoom in 2D and 3D while navigating, the ability to browse traffic messages by sliding screens, and much more. The v1.4 update is immediately available for download for free for any current MobileNavigator users. To top it all off, Navigon has chosen to drop the price of both apps until January 11th. MobileNavigator North America, which normally costs $89.99, is now available for Read More
It looks like the MobileNavigator app from Navigon has also been subject to a price cut, albeit its just a temporary drop, but still nice. The sale is currently in effect and means that you can purchase the app for $59.99, which is down from the regular price of $99.99 — a $40 savings. And this price is noted as being valid until January 11, 2010. Additionally, the MobileNavigator app was also updated. The update brings the app up to version 1.4 and it added enhanced pedestrian navigation, Google Local Search, coordinate input, SOS/DirectHelp, turn-by-turn route list, manual zooming in 2D and 3D while navigating, country info when crossing borders and much more. Of course there was also one other feature that is sure to make any users happy — a faster startup time. Read More
MobileNavigator, the turn-by-turn navigation app for the iPhone from Navigon, has just been updated to version 1.4, which adds several new features and performance improvements. In addition, Navigon has also dropped the price for MobileNavigator North America (iTunes link) to only $59.99 until January 11, 2010. If you’ve been holding off buying MobileNavigator due to the price, now’s a great time to pick it up at a $40 savings! I’ve been a Navigon user for several months now, and I can say that the app is definitely worth the $99.99 price, especially with the TrafficLive feature, and this promotion makes it even sweeter! Navigon has included the following new features in the 1.4 update: I can attest to the faster start up time. On my 32GB 3GS, MobileNavigator 1.4 starts up 3-5 seconds faster than it did before the update. And this is on a jailbroken device with several other things Read More

Navigon AG’s MobileNavigator Lost Me There for a While

12.03.09        App Score: 8/10    Navigon MobileNavigator – One of the big deals about Apple’s iPhone 3G and 3GS iPhones are their built-in GPS. With the right app, any 3G flavor can become a fully-featured GPS unit. Make the app cheap enough, and the iPhone as a way-finder becomes a better option than the real thing. Unfortunately, for some of us cash-poor types, the $90 for GPS apps from Navigon and TomTom is a bit hard to swallow, especially since you can buy the real thing for close to the same dough. In the interest of fair disclosure, I prevailed upon Navigon to give me a review copy. Otherwise, I would have probably bought a Garmin Nuvi GPS or something similar for about $125. And in fairness to Navigon and TomTom, they entice buyers with the occasional $20 discount such as the ones the two companies offered in Read More

In addition to the regular mobile navigator being on sale, they have also discounted the Traffic Live feature which is normally $24.99 down to $14.99. This really makes it attractive as you can have everything that they offer and still pay less than the TomTom all by itself. To make things clear, I am not comparing this to the TomTom because overall, that is the better device, at least in my opinion. However, this is now a pretty nice alternative for the money. If you are going to take advantage of Read More

With Magellan and TomTom getting all of the attention lately, Navigon no doubt wanted to shift your focus back to their high quality iPhone navigation app.  The best way to accomplish such a task is to have a sale, and that’s exactly what they are doing. Navigon’s MobileNavigator North America will be priced at $69.99, a full $20.00 below its regular price, from now until November 30th.  MobileNavigator‘s new Traffic Live feature will also be on sale for $14.99 during that time, which is $5.00 below its launch price.  That puts MobileNavigator North America well below TomTom US & Canada‘s price of $99.99, and slightly below Magellan RoadMate‘s price of $79.99. Navigon briefly cutting price on its popular Nav app
Calendar16 Fri, 20 Nov 2009 17:30:00 UTC +00:00
Gee, we were just saying how competitive it is getting in the iPhone nav department, and Navigon has gone and cut prices for holiday travelers. For 10 days only, beginning today (November 20-30) Navigon's iPhone app, Mobile Navigator [iTunes link]will be on sale for U.S. $69.99 instead of $89.99 providing a $20.00 savings. In addition, Navigon's Traffic Live feature is also on sale for $14.99 instead of $24.99. Traffic Live is a one time charge, not a continuing cost. That's a significant saving for this very popular app, and puts it under similar featured apps from TomTom ($99.99) and Magellan ($79.99). In my tests of the Navigon app I have found it accurate, and it has a superior user interface that is easy to use. Of course you shouldn't be looking at it while you are driving, and the text to speech does an excellent job of helping you keep your Read More
A trip around town with Traffic Live from Navigon
Calendar16 Thu, 12 Nov 2009 23:30:00 UTC +00:00
I've already reported on the updated Navigon iPhone app, [iTunes link] and noted that live traffic info was now included as an in-app purchase. I've spent the last 2 days driving around town testing it, and it works as advertised -- but perhaps in not as many places as I would have hoped. Here in Southern Arizona, there were very few traffic updates, so I set a destination for Phoenix and had lots of information. Clearly, Navigon is not always sourcing information from smaller U.S. cities. As a comparison, I tried the traffic info built into my car nav system, and it displayed 9 nearby traffic incidents, some as close as 4 miles away. At the same time, the nearest traffic incident I got from Navigon was 94 miles away in the Phoenix metro area. It was odd, because both systems source a lot of the same places (like Clear Channel Read More
It certainly is hard to believe, isn’t it?  I had to read the headline at least three times myself before it finally sunk in.  TomTom has decided to step out of the shadows and issue a press release stating that they have submitted an updated and feature-rich version of their iPhone navigation app to Apple for approval. According to their press release via Engadget, the TomTom update will include advanced lane guidance that will operate in both landscape and portrait mode, the highly sought after text-to-speech, a “Help Me” feature that provides direct access to emergency numbers and directions to the nearest emergency providers, updated map and safetly camera database, customizable audio warnings, and iPod player control. Alright, now let all of that sink in for a second.  Are you ready for the next part?  This update is going to be absolutely free, which it darn well should be considering TomTom Read More
Navigon updates again - adds live traffic
Calendar16 Tue, 10 Nov 2009 21:30:00 UTC +00:00
Navigon [iTunes link] has been very aggressive in the world of iPhone navigation. After taking the early lead in features, they continue to pour on the steam. Using in-app purchasing, any Navigon owners can now get live traffic, both crowd-sourced, and additional data from Clear Channel radio stations and other traffic providers. According to Navigon: I've found the Navigon app a pleasure to use. In addition to the extra cost traffic info, this new release has added to the base software. That includes extended destination search. If you are not sure of the address you can move an icon around on a map and navigate to that point. The app also can launch in landscape mode. Navigon has offered a car kit in Europe with a cradle, speaker and power connections. The company says it is evaluating selling the kit in the U.S., but hasn't come to a final decision. As Read More

In mid-September Navigon announced that they would be bringing live traffic data to their killer turn-by-turn iPhone navigation app, MobileNavigator, sometime during the month of October.  Well, October has obviously passed, so technically they missed their target date, but at least the update is now available in early November. MobileNavigator v1.3 is now available in the App Store and it features the ability to view live traffic data, albeit at a cost.  Navigon Traffic Live, as the feature is being called, is accessible via the “More” tab located at the bottom of the screen.  You can then navigate your way to “Extras” and you will see a single in-app purchase available for $19.99.  If we are to believe what Navigon claimed back in September, this is merely a discounted price that should stick during the first four weeks of availability.  After that, the price may be going up to $24.99, which Read More
I woke up this morning to what I thought was a welcoming surprise: a TomTom iPhone app update!  Yes, it’s true, TomTom finally realized that they still had an app sitting in the App Store just waiting to be updated with all kinds of glorious new features.  As it turns out, the update only addresses a couple of key issues and according to some early user reviews, those issues weren’t addressed that well. TomTom’s iPhone app hit the App Store in mid-August to many users’ delight, or at least what they thought would be a delight.  In its first iteration, the app lacked many features including the highly sought after text-to-speech functionality.  To make things worse, the app’s GPS precision was fairly lackluster and it constantly lost a signal.  Some users even complained about the way the app handled and searched for addresses, as well as its sometimes clunky interface.  But Read More

GPS Summary – Comparison of all iPhone GPS applications
Calendar16 Sat, 26 Sep 2009 16:35:28 UTC +00:00
Last week, I worked my way through all of the currently available iPhone on-board GPS applications. I stuck with just the applications that held all of the maps on-board — meaning that you didn’t need to have a network connection to use the maps or routing. CoPilot came out as our winner as it has the best features, though some very confusing, for it’s price. But we thought it would be a good idea to do a re-cap and compare all 5 of the GPS I looked at last week and include the first iPhone GPS application, G-Map. Odds and Ends Click, Ignore, Repeat Taking a look at some of the odds and ends, some of the things that you don’t usually think of when thinking about GPS applications, these features can really add to or detract from the value of a GPS application on the iPhone. One example, the annoying Read More
Navigon’s MobileNavigator for the iPhone was recently updated with text-to-speech, a feature that TomTom’s turn-by-turn app is sorely lacking, and now they have decided to pile it on with a new live traffic data feature.  The only downside is that it’ll cost you. The new feature, which is being called Navigon Traffic Live, will provide users with precise real-time traffic information pulled from over one million drivers across the country.  It will also use information from traffic cameras, speed sensors, and conventional traffic messages. The in-app add-on will be available sometime in October for the one-time price of $24.99.  However, it will be discounted for the first four weeks of availability for only $19.99. It will be interesting to see how TomTom, and every other navigation app developer for that matter, is able to respond to this recent duo of updates.  TomTom has said they will be adding these necessary features Read More
Live Traffic comes to Mobile Navigator
Calendar16 Wed, 16 Sep 2009 23:00:00 UTC +00:00
It's coming! Navigon, maker of the iPhone Mobile Navigator app [iTunes link], will announce a live traffic feature tomorrow that will be rolled out next month. The update is only for the North American version of the software. Our readers have absolutely lusted after this feature for iPhone navigation, and now, after already adding text to speech in an update earlier this month, Navigon has pulled ahead of the pack again. According to the company: The system 'uses real-time speed data from over one million drivers across North America including commercial fleets such as trucks and taxis but also regular drivers with a GPS system. So if for example several vehicles on a road report slow speed, the system recognizes congestion and provides an alternate and faster route. The feature also uses an intelligent fusion of information from traffic cameras, speed sensors and conventional traffic messages coming through a radio network. Read More
Hit The Road, Jack: Navigon Takes The Lead In iPhone GPS

By – Up to this point, we at iSmashPhone.com have been pretty bullish on TomTom's approach to iPhone-based GPS navigation (click here for our recent head-to-head comparison of the top GPS apps). But Navigon's recent upgrade to their MobileNavigator app could change all that.  The latest version adds a new text-to-speech converter that does its damnedest to sound out street names, making it unique so far amongst its iGPS brethren.  There's also a more seamless integration with the existing iPod controls; as the company brags in their press release, "Drivers can now enjoy the full range of iPod functionalities with a simple one-click from map access to artists, titles, albums, audio books, podcasts and playlist selections. The feature also takes advantage of the shuffle, and automatic playlist generating technology within iPod. The driver can listen to songs again or leave it to the device to generate a random selection." Oh, and Read More
Navigon has updated its iPhone application, MobileNavigator, with spanking new features. Once you press the “download,” here’s what you’ll get: And that’s about it. Kudos to Navigon for keeping its application fresh. North American version of the application could be downloaded from here (AppStore link), whereas if you live elsewhere, you should search for “navigon” in iTunes and take it from there. The price is $89.99, and the update is available free to the existing users. Dusan has been using smartphones since their introduction and is now following the latest trends in the industry. The "convergence" is what he's most excited about, and writing about it is the next logical thing to do. He thinks that using a smartphone is what everyone who cares about their time should do. In addition to his interests in mobile phones, Dusan also loves to experiment with the latest web and mobile 2.0 services. The Read More
TomTom definitely has the name and the technology, but Navigon is relying on frequent updates and features to grab your attention and hopefully bring you iPhone navigation app craving users over to their side. Navigon first released their MobileNavigator app for the iPhone in July, and at that time it still lacked quite a few features.  As most iPhone and iPod touch developers due, they intended to offer all kinds of new features via updates and apparently they really, truly meant it. The recent MobileNavigator v1.2 update adds a handful of great features, but none is more important than text-to-speech.  Text-to-speech allows you to finally take your eyes off of your device and keep them on the road by reading street names aloud as you drive.  The other new features include automatic day and night display adjustment, integrated iPod control, and the ability to share your location via email. As expected, Navigon raised Read More
Users have been begging for it, and now Navigon has updated the Mobile Navigator [iTunes link] app to read street names to you as you drive. I've tested the app around town, and it worked well, and the speech is clear and easy to understand. Here in Arizona, a lot of the street names are Spanish, and in most cases, the app pronounced them correctly. It meant that I could drive around getting navigation instructions without ever looking at the iPhone screen, which is a real safety improvement. Navigon has also added good iPod control functions. You can add new playlists or tracks, and listen while you are using navigation. This is an option that must be turned on, so if you want the function, be sure to do so. I also like that the app now knows when it is night time and switches the display accordingly. Again, this is Read More
Not to be outdone by TomTom, Navigon has revealed on their Facebook page that they intend to release an iPhone car kit that should make navigating while driving a more comfortable and safe experience. According to iFun.de [Google translation] via MacRumors, the kit will simply feature a suction cup mount with an adjustable holder, and it will include the ability to charge your device.  Navigon’s offering obviously lacks many of the features that TomTom has promised with their car kit, including a GPS chip, which is disappointing because this really brings nothing new to the table.  It has been reported, however, that Navigon may release a subsequent version that will sport a GPS chip. Navigon hasn’t announced an exact release date for the kit, but it should be arriving sometime in October for less than 40 Euros (~US $57). Are any of you interested in Navigon’s car kit?  Or are you Read More
If you haven’t heard, the iPhone now supports turn by turn navigation apps. These apps essentially turn your iPhone into one of those portable navigational devices which people refer to as “my navi” or “my GPS”. Overall, the apps are quite good. They work well, they look great, and having a turn by turn navigational system on your cell phone is highly convenient. The Palm Pre, unlike the iPhone which requires purchasing an app from the App Store, comes equipped with one of these apps, and it’s free with the Sprint service plan. The Pre’s app, “Telenav By Sprint”, is quite frankly the perfect turn by turn navigational app for a cell phone, and we compared the 5 most popular American navigational iPhone apps to the Pre app.  Look below for a detailed table comparing the applications on 20 different parameters. Note: For these applications you will 100% need a car charger Read More
I'm happy to report that the leading car navigation apps for the iPhone work surprisingly well. Not only that, but for the next week, there's a clear choice for best app. Until August 31st, Navigon MobileNavigator will cost $70. In my testing, it competed neck and neck with the $100 TomTom, so for the next eight days, it's the best value among the top contenders. But when they're both selling for $100, that TomTom is going to look a lot more tempting. The third app I tested is TeleNav's AT&T Navigator. It's certainly worthy, and has some connected capability that the other two apps here don't, but in the end, the economics are wrong: At $10 per month, it could become frightfully expensive, with no significant added value. These three navigators are the most reputable in the app store (hence their heightened cost). They're all based on software I've used in Read More

Now that Apple has allowed navigation apps to enter the app store we are seeing them pop up all over the place. There are a few different apps that stand out most prominently from the AT&T app with a monthly fee to the most recently released TomTom navigation app. But there is one app that has stood out from the rest so far, in my opinion, when it comes to navigation and turn by turn GPS. MobileNavigator is an app that combines some of the best features I've seen on GPS apps and whips out a few unique ones of its own. To start, the app does not rely on an internet connection to display the map of the area. Instead, the entire area is stored right on your iPhone. This can be both exciting and annoying as it takes up a large chunk of your memory. But I think it Read More

Very Promising; Would Benefit from Some Improvements
MBHockey 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
After reading many horror stories about the GPS Nav apps that preceeded this one on the app store, I was quite skeptical. I have been pleasantly surprised. Tracking is great, recalculation is decent (see below), and the app is easy to use. I would have given this app four stars, but decided to give it five to balance out all the ridiculous one star reviews.
Great software & a must have!

chaznet 1.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
Fairly basic GPS product. While it may get you where you're going, the time estimate it provides is meaningless -- it seems to think there's a helicopter waiting on the roof to take you there. Without traffic info, I'm surprised they would even include an ETA as it serves no purpose.
Would be great but.

Come on folks. Why release a program that can't find a gps signal and then suggest that a user spend hours resetting memory in order to make it work.
flat out does not work
bonwick 1.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
The Navigon program cannot get a GPS signal -- even in the middle of a field, outdoors, with blue sky all around (guaranteed line of sight to at least eight GPS satellites). The iPhone native maps app gets GPS signal just fine, so the problem is not the GPS chip in the phone -- it's something specific to Navigon that's broken. I see that some folks have reported similar problems, while others have given glowing reviews -- so perhaps there's some lot-to-lot variability in the GPS chip output that the native maps app can handle but the Navigon app cannot. But the bottom line, for me and several other reviewers, is that Navigon DOES NOT WORK *AT ALL*. Hope I can return it...
Having GPS troubles
John from San Diego, CA 1.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
Even though Navigon has exited the US market for handheld portable GPS products I thought I would try the software. The Software looks great but either it is my new 3gs unit or the software because running the Navigon software I am unable to maintain a consistent GPS lock. The software gets a lock for 1 or 2 minutes but then loses GPS lock for up to 5 minutes. By the way, my Garmin GPS sitting on the seat next to me in my car maintains a perfect GPS lock. Also Apple maps works fine but I am not sure if Apple maps is using GPS or getting its coordinate from cell towers. Hopefully this new software has only a minor bug that will be fixed shortly. At the moment it is useless for navigation.
Can't find GPS signal? What!?
mpp_21 1.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
I jumped the gun on this app due to its glowing European counterpart and for some reason it can't get a gps signal. The Maps app works right away while this can't find a signal after drive for a half an hour through city and suburbs. On the Navigon website FAQ's they say to backup the iPhone to your computer (which may take up to a few hours) and reset everything on my phone then install it all back onto it. What!? I just paid $70 for this and I can't use my phone because I have to back it up and reset it? I will give it more stars if they resolve this issue in an easy manner, but for now ONE STAR!
Only works on map mode
Ynubiis 1.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
The navigation portion of this software doesn't work. When entering a destination it constantly states there's no GPS signal but if you go to the GPS info the latitude, longitude and even the SPEED shows in the apps info. If you go to map mode it tracks your location perfectly, yet going back to the navigation mode gives the same error.
Not working for me yet
wd3ll 1.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
I've installed the app on my iPhone, did the reset as described on the NAVTEQ website, but like others, keep getting the red bar across the top. Google maps app loads instantly, but this app keeps saying that it is unable to find my location. I'll keep trying, but hopefully I can be reimbursed if it won't work.
Won't get a signal
bdizzlefizzle 1.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
Despite being in an open area, and waiting for 10 minutes without moving, I could not get the software to get a good enough signal to actually give me navigation instructions. It was happy to run a simulation, but that's useless when actually driving.

Good luck trying to get a GPS lock or keep it consistant. Really too bad. FYI none of the fixes you will try on the creators site work, however they are a real pain to do. Dont buy yet, im going for my $$$ back for sure.

Like many others, I can't get any GPS reception on my iPhone 3gs, anywhere in the greater Boston area, even when outside my car, with a clear view of the sky. Google maps and AT&T Navigator have no problem, nor do any of my other GPS-aware apps.

No GPS reception
webkms 1.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
While the Google maps app is able to acquire a GPS signal all the time, I had very little luck so far to get this app to acquire a signal. Even when it claims to have a signal it shows my position in the wrong place (I.e. hundreds of yards off). When I verify this with Google maps it shows me in the right position. As far as I am concerned this app fails in the most basic way a navigation app can fail: It can't tell where you are. This makes it utterly useless. Until this is resolved I can only recommend to not buy it. I did read Navigon's recommendation to reset the phone. I find this completely unacceptable - especially given that Google maps work just fine.
Good start, poor POI
Juriswilliams 2.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
As far as Nav apps go this one is clean, fairly (not prestinely) accurate, and quick to load. Easy to understand interface and easy to use on the road. The speech is very clear and concise and I enjoy being able to have my music play as the navigator is giving turn directions. Why 2 stars then? One very important, very crucial feature is fatally flawed. This nav apps POI is unforgivably out of date. I did a search on over 60 local resturants, bars, gas stations, museums, movie theatres, etc. Of those 60, 20 were new within the last 2 years. It did not find a single 1 of them. Of the 40 remaining, 20 of them were new locations within the last 3 years. It found 6 of the 10 of them. Of the remaining 20, the locations were over 5 years old. It found every one of them. I date the POI on this somewhere between 3 and 4 years old. Compare this to AT&T Navigator that was 100% on POI. Beware if you're a big user of POI because it also found locations that were out of business for over 3 years as well. DO NOT RELY on their POI at this time. 3-4 year old, inaccurate data is not worth $69.99, let alone the $99 they will be asking shortly. However, if they get this fixed, I would gladly and without hesitation revise my rating to 5 stars.

Foolishly, I bought 2 others navigation apps & found I had to trash them because they were so bad. Their routing was terribly off, their UI was confusing, their features lacking. Unfortunately there was no "Lite" or free version of these to test out before buying them. I tried the Lite (free) version of Navigon for USA & it looked good from what I could see, so I went for it & I'm very glad I did.

I've been using Navigon products as well as iGo 8 (which Navigon is based on). I have iGo8 on Windows Mobile and I was expecting the same thing. This app does not have 3D terrain mapping nor does it have 3D building landmarks. You can play iPod music in the background but it does not mute when announcements are made. Hence, I am giving this 3 stars. If it had TTS, Muted Music, 3D/Building/Terrain, I would give it 5 stars. Furthermore, it would be ideal if this downloaded traffic updates and had other GPS features like a speedometer, mileage tracker. I do like the Reality Pro lane feature. Bottom Line : This is a basic GPS app for the iPhone and well worth the $70. Unfortunately,It has the same tech as a 5 year old GPS system.

1st comment on the other negative reviews. Play with the app and explore, most of the items your requesting are built in. Try settings! 2nd this application is so fast GPS locks in several seconds. Clear easy to read display great voice turn by turn! It is worth every dollar! Last regarding TomTom here is what is going to happen. TomTom wants the sales revenue and wants to share as little as of the money with apple that it can get a way with. So they will sell you a TomTom app for $10 or $20 (apple gets a smaller amount) now you have to go get theTomTom window mount with GPS and a speaker. Let's see $99.99 this means TomTom gets to keep all the money. BTW if I have to carry a window mount/gps I will just keep using my old GPS device, why get any app. I want one device to do it all not carry additional accessories. So if Navigon can get the GPS working well (it does) why can't TomTom; oh greed to make more money! Navigon thanks for all the hard work on this application. I love it.
