MotionX-GPS Adds New Features for Skiing and Snowboarding
Calendar16 Mon, 09 Jan 2012 23:45:00 UTC +00:00
Newsdate: January 9, 2012 3:45 pm   Posted in Navigation, Sports    Fullpower-MotionX today announced a major update to its MotionX-GPS App for iPhone and iPod touch that adds support for skiing and snowboarding. MotionX-GPS is now the perfect app to take to the slopes as it’s been enhanced with a new ski/snowboard mode to make your mountain experience even more fun. New features let you know exactly where your friends and family are on the mountain via live position updates. This makes it easier for meeting up on the slopes and tracking each other. MotionX-GPS is also handy for tracking your vertical position and maximum speed.  “The MotionX-GPS App is my constant skiing companion,” said Eva Twardokens, MotionX spokesperson, Olympian and U.S. Ski and Snowboard Hall of Fame inductee. “I use MotionX-GPS on my iPhone to track my skiing speed and to share my location and photos with friends and family. TUAW Best of 2011 wrap-up and editor picks
Calendar16 Sat, 07 Jan 2012 01:00:00 UTC +00:00
It's January 6th, 2012, and today marks the end of the TUAW Best of 2011 awards. This was a massive undertaking, with 25 separate categories all requiring their own nominations and voting from our readers. We've learned some lessons for next year's event -- start earlier, watch for astroturfing in the nominations, drop some unpopular categories -- and the Best of 2012 will be even better. The editorial staff here at TUAW agreed with many of the reader picks, but we had our own opinions on some others. We want to thank all of the thousands of TUAW readers who took time to consider their favorite accessories and apps, nominate them for an award, and then vote in the competition. Without further ado, here's the full list of winners as well as our picks for the TUAW Best of 2011: Editor picks: 13" and 11" MacBook Air, 13" MacBook Pro Peripheral Read More
TUAW Best of 2011: Vote for the best iPhone navigation app
Calendar16 Sat, 24 Dec 2011 23:00:00 UTC +00:00
The nominations are in, and the poll is ready to go! The TUAW Best of 2011 awards are all about you -- the readers -- and what you think is the cream of the crop of Apple or third-party products and software. To vote, select one entry from the top nominations made by readers. We'll be announcing the winner in just a few days. Vote early and often! TUAW is asking for your votes for the best iPhone navigation app of 2011. The readers have spoken, and the nominees for best iPhone navigation app are (in no particular order) Motion X GPS Drive (US$0.99), Navigon ($29.99 for Navigon USA), the popular and free crowdsourced nav app Waze, and TomTom ($39.99 for TomTom USA). All of these apps have one thing in common -- they provide point-to-point navigation to points of interest. Another app that uses the iPhone's GPS capabilities but doesn't Read More
During December and January, The Unofficial Apple Weblog is soliciting your nominations and votes for the best products for Mac, iPhone/iPod touch, and iPad. We'll start with nominations in a category, and then tally your votes for the top-nominated products a few days later. The winner in each category receives the highly-coveted title of TUAW Best of 2011. Today's category for nominations in the TUAW Best of 2011 awards is iPhone navigation apps. These are the apps that give you turn-by-turn directions as you make your way around town, and they've been getting better as time goes by. Perhaps you are a fan of the free crowdsourced nab app Waze, which has a 4 out of 5 star rating on the App Store with over 29,000 user reviews. Or maybe you love the TomTom U.S.A. app ($39.99) with its ability to guide you with celebrity voices (Homer Simpson, anyone?). GPS by Read More
App Smart Extra: Guide to Roadside Amenities
Calendar16 Tue, 29 Nov 2011 00:40:35 UTC +00:00
In an earlier App Smart column, I tested out a few apps that help you track your car’s performance, and maybe remove some of the pain of driving in the meantime. For people with more practical driving needs, check out RoadNinja (free on Apple only). The app helps you figure out the location and names of gas stations and restaurants available at your next highway exit. The theory is good. The reality, so far, is fair. But first things first: like a lot of apps, you can’t really use RoadNinja safely unless you have a co-pilot or you pull off onto the side of the road. The app detects your location and displays a list of coming exits. Or, if you want to plan a little further ahead, you can choose from among the 30,000 exits in its database. For each exit, RoadNinja shows nearby establishments, as well as contact information Read More
Choosing the right turn-by-turn app for your iOS device
Calendar16 Thu, 08 Sep 2011 18:39:26 UTC +00:00
Competition is certainly heating up in the realm of turn-by-turn navigation apps. Consider Garmin’s  acquisition of Navigon, MotionX’s In-Vehicle Telematics partnership with Pioneer, and TomTom’s recent unveiling of an iPad version  of its popular navigation app at this year’s IFA in Berlin. But are the biggest names really also the brightest stars when it comes to turn-by-turn navigation? I took a look at the field to find out. Offline as much as possible. Companies are putting a lot of bells and whistles into their navigation apps these days, but their real value boils down to being able to find your way without an active network connection. Even if you are travelling in well-connected areas, carriers are cutting back on unlimited bandwidth, and having to download map tiles along your route certainly eats up your limits. MotionX GPS Drive is a favorite for many, but the way it handles map downloads might not please some. Pre-installed Read More
I've looked at Where To? before and found it to be a handy, easy to use local guide when I'm looking for anything from Art Galleries to the Zoo. It has info on nearby food, shopping, health care and attractions. The latest version of this app has added improvements to the animations in augmented reality mode, a new direction indicator, and support for Google Earth. It has connectivity to the Motion X GPS program for directions in addition to the existing TomTom and Navigon apps. Where To? also adds store hours when provided by a business. I found that many entries had that information. There's no shortage of these local info apps, and I've always liked Around Me which has some similar capabilities but without the links to nav apps. I like the improvements in this version of the Where To? app. It is an 11 MB download, works in 10 Read More

RC Plane 2 is Ultimate iOS Flight Simulator

07.15.11        App Score: 9/10    RC Plane 2 flight simulator app for iPhone is a chance to relive childhood dreams. Over the years, my fear of flight has left, but my interest in planes has remained and therefore I have logged my fair share of hours in various flight simulators. One that I’ve really enjoyed lately is the app for iPhone and iPad. Its combination of difficulty, plane selections and interesting camera views have made for a lot of entertainment. If you’re new to this type of app, then The RC Plane 2 iOS flight simulator will be a bit difficult to jump straight into gameplay. I would suggest starting out with the flight school, which will bring you through everything from taking off to landing and the basics of controlling a 3 channel and 4 channel RC plane. While taking off is the easiest, coming down and Read More
5 apps for summer travel
Calendar16 Sat, 25 Jun 2011 01:00:00 UTC +00:00
Summer has officially begun here in the States. Schools are closing and families are planning vacations across our great land. It can be a hassle, but don't fret! Here are five apps to make your adventure more enjoyable. (Free) When my sisters and I were young, my dad routinely stuffed us into the "wayback" of our Matador station wagon where we sat, sweaty and gobbling Chicken McNuggets, en route to nowhere in particular. Ah, I can still smell the BBQ dipping sauce and leaded gas fumes. Few contemporary families enjoy a Sunday drive, and that's what the aptly-named Sunday Drive for iPhone aims to change. The attractive, location-based app represents a growing database of user-supplied travel routes, attractions and single-day getaways. To get started, let the iPhone find your location via GPS. A map will load with the familiar blue dot as well as Sunday Drive icons representing logged drives. Tap Read More
iPhone navigation packages, in S-M-L editions
Calendar16 Sat, 18 Jun 2011 20:00:00 UTC +00:00
Thinking about getting Dad some directional guidance for Father's Day? Our package selections cover small, medium and large budgets to get where you're going. Of all the industries disrupted by the emergence of these odd touchscreen computers disguised as mobile phones, the standalone GPS market may be the most topsy-turvy. Among Chris' 33 things he doesn't need any more now that he has an iPhone, a separate $100+ unitasker GPS unit is probably the biggest target; the same goes double for Android phone owners, who get a capable and free turn-by-turn navigation tool as part of the Google Maps application. Just having the phone isn't quite enough, though, if you want to help those notorious no-asking-for-directions family members (that'd be Dad) self-guide with the iPhone 4. Combining the right app with the right car bracket can turn a simple purchase into a genuine Father's Day gift -- so here are our Read More
While there is no shortage of navigation apps available for the iPhone and everyone seems to have their favorite, one of the more often talked about has recently been updated. The app is MotionX GPS Drive and it now sits at version 9.0. But perhaps a little more important than the version number is the new features that have come along with the update. According to the what’s new section in the App Store—those using the app will now have live traffic. And the best part—the app remains low priced at just $0.99. Read More
New MotionX GPS Update Adds Traffic Tracking
Calendar16 Tue, 08 Feb 2011 17:30:16 UTC +00:00
By Blake Grundman on February 8th, 2011 Great GPS software gets even better! Way back in September of 2009 MotionX GPS Drive landed on the iOS and took the navigation software world by storm.  In the subsequent year and a half since then, the product has grown from a fledgling app into one of the strongest GPS titles in the App Store.  In another show of how far the tool has came, it managed to earn a four and a half star rating earlier this year in its official 148Apps review.  This doesn’t mean that the updates are over though, in fact, that was only the beginning. We received word from the development team over at MotionX that a new update just hit, adding in the heavily requested street level traffic monitoring.  They shined a bit more light on the upgrade, stating: MotionX-GPS Drive delivers an unparalleled door-to-door navigation solution for Read More
Holiday Travel Made Easy With iOS Apps

Posted 11/22/2010 at 5:32pm | by Michael Simon With some 40 million-plus Americans expected to hit the roads, skies and rails this Thanksgiving, it won’t be easy to avoid backups of hungry, cranky travelers desperate to get their hands on the last turkey leg. But with an iPhone in your pocket--or an iPad on your lap--you can stay one step ahead of your Android-using relatives. (Just make sure you save them a few Gingerbread cookies when they finally show up.) Taking to the friendly skies may be the best way to avoid a nasty traffic jam, but that’s not to say you won’t log some frequent flyer miles hanging around the terminal. With a little help from the iFly Airport Guide ($3.99; Pro, $6.99) you can expertly chart out your path from check-in to take-off, making time to hit up the duty-free shop and indulge in a carmel macchiato while you’re Read More

MotionX GPS Drive has just been updated to version 3.0 and with that version number increase comes a few new features. According to the “What’s new” section in the App Store users can expect to see; Also included in the 3.0 update were other “optimizations and bug fixes.” Finally for those that are still on the fence about making a purchase. First, its only $0.99, but second there is now a nice video that shows off the features and ease of use — check it out below. Read More
When I reviewed MotionX GPS Drive for iPhone, I said it offered the best value but had some UI issues. Newly redesigned, the app's 3.0 version is far better—with landscape view and a more logical user interface. Yes, the landscape mode I was lamenting its lack of in the last edition is there, and it looks great. As you can see, even pulling up iPod controls doesn't hog the screen. Remember, naysayers, it's not that you need widescreen for the road ahead, you need it for extra info, and you need it because it fits on the windshield better. Time till arrival, distance till arrival and estimated time of arrival still all scroll through to the right of the "upcoming turn" text. I would prefer that I could pick one (I'm an ETA man—though not the Basque nationalist kind), but you can't do that, yet. The interface has a nice menu Read More

If you're not sure about this whole iPhone turn-by-turn thing, and you've been too afraid to try it because the apps are so expensive, hey, look: Motionx Drive, our favorite budget iPhone nav app, is just a dollar right now. Granted, this should be seen as a trial, because it only includes a month of full services, after which a navigation subscription costs $3 a month or $25 a year via in-app purchases, though the months don't have to be consecutive, so you can sort of just pay as you go, buying nav access only when you need it. If you're driving anywhere over the holidays, seriously, just give it a shot. Four quarters, folks! Read More

MotionX hits a home run again!
mobilenerd 5.0 stars Version: 1.1
I don't have a GPS in my car, but there are still times when I need good, reliable turn-by-turn directions to someplace. TomTom and Navigon are too expensive for what you get (seriously, $100 for an app?), and a lot of the other apps looked cheap and thrown together. I love MotionX GPS for cycling and running and heard that they were coming out with a car navigation app, so I've been waiting for this app to be released.
MotionX-GPS with awesome TbT and voice guidance
Runner's High 5.0 stars Version: 1.1
I have ATT, Tomtom, Navigon and this is the best one. It's the same guys who make MotionX-GPS that I use on my runs. Same support and quality. Thank's MotionX team. I love it.
Awesome!!!! I've been waiting!!@!!!!
armadillo badger 5.0 stars Version: 1.1
I'm a huge motionx gps fan and have been waiting. Just took a spin around the block and love it!!!!!!!!! Thank you, this rocks!!!!!
Outstanding at a reasonable price
Hokie88 4.0 stars Version: 1.1
This is an outstanding start and if my experience with Fullpower's other MotionX app is any indication, it will only get better.
THE APP OF MY DREAMS!!!
Gladiosaaah 5.0 stars Version: 1.1
I've used Magellon, TomTom, Garmond dashboard nav systems in the past... but lately when I travel it's just easier to use my iPhone. Only thing... I wanted voice directions! Was on a business trip recently & carpooled with a friend whose service provider had the voice direction thing, but it was so annoying we turned it off. MotionX is the answer to my prayers!! Love the features/options it offers, the maps and graphics are easy to read and follow - and the voice directions ROCK!! They not only get you there without staring at the phone... but I could listen to that voice all day. A couple of times on the road I've had to! Don't know how they're doing it for $2.99. Amazing. I'm in the free (for a month - woohoo!) voice directions test phase, but I'll be signing up for that continuing service with a smile on my face. Thank you, thank you MotionX!!!
!!! Read Before Buying !!!
rust.bucket 2.0 stars Version: 1.1
For those of you out there thinking this $3 app will replace TomTom or Navigon; you may wish to reconsider.
Open Day Buyer!!!
servantaj 5.0 stars Version: 1.1
This is a great app for budget mind users. The graphic are great. I can't wait for landscape mode. The main draw back is for multiple iphone users on same iTunes account. The $25 dollar is per LINE per YEAR. So if you have 4 people on your account, That's ONE HUNDRED DOLLARS (Tom Tom and Navigon price)! And if you lose your cell signal then you will lose your Live Voice Guidance. Luckly, I will only be paying $50 (wife and I). I'm a MotionX user, so getting the DRIVE was a no bainer. Just wish the $25 was per account than per iphone.
Love It!
MopedMaina 5.0 stars Version: 1.1
just took my first run on my Moped, so happy with the results. In the world of performance moped-ing there is only one thing that matters,SPEED! And I wanna know how fast I am going and where I can get fuel when I run out and am back on the pedals:)
Amazing price for an amazing app
JailerJoe 5.0 stars Version: 1.1
$2.99 for a turn by turn nav app...insane! Glad I didn't bite on any of the other spendier app.
Great Product!
Hondo1 5.0 stars Version: 1.1
Great product! Has all the GPS options that I need. Accurate and no loss of signal. Voice promps are loud and clear. Turn by turn directions are clear. Interface is easy. I own most of the higher price GPS products and I could see myself using this for all my driving directions.
Landscape? Why?
Norseman38 5.0 stars Version: 1.1
So it can look like every other GPS on the market? Seriously, portrait is perfect for connecting to a dock in my car. I can listen to iTunes AND get the turn info on my car's audio system. How sweet it is!!! Great job, folks!
This app is great!!!
Mandrake134 5.0 stars Version: 1.1
I like Motion X GPS so I got this the first day it dropped and I have been very happy since. I've used it all day today and haven't put it down yet. There are not really any downsides I see and the ease of use is great. Even though they do charge for the voice nav that is something that is very affordable and would take 4 years of paying for it to equal the Tom-Tom or Navigon Price!!! What a great App! I recommend this to everyone!
Best bang for your buck
Motionxjay1981 5.0 stars Version: 1.1
Wow, Im so glad I waited a couple of weeks to finally download a GPS app! I had no idea that I was going to run into the best app I ever download. In fact I don't remember the last time I spent a better 3 bucks. As the saying goes "you get what you pay for." Not with this app however, you get a legit working turn by turn accurate GPS. When I had my HTC, I had Telenav GPS which I was very pleased with but had to pay an extra $10 a month to use it and was much slower then this GPS. Thank you MotionX for makeing such an award winning app at such a great price!!!
WOW!
daftcastles 5.0 stars Version: 1.1
This App is amazing! Such a steal and even more worth it with the free trial. Navigation has been flawless. Best turn by turn be leaps and bounds!!!
Soooooo Happy
Rajronraj 5.0 stars Version: 1.1
I have been using TomTom for about six weeks and have been disapointed. Many times I just wander off the road into the weeds. Other times it just says no GPS signal while Google/iphone maps locate immediately. Would it be too harsh to think TomTom decreases the signal so they can stick you with another 100 bucks for their dock? Well all of that is old news, well except for the $100 bucks I am out. I will never give TomTom another dollar. But WOW I love MotionX GPS Drive. It finds a signal as well as my Garmin stand alone. No wandering off the road or false messages about not finding a signal. The interface is wonderful and does not get confused by addresses in my contacts. The same address TomTom can not use, X has no problem with. I use the other X product for my bike and love it. There are FREQUENT updates with meaningful new function and GREAT customer support. I am expecting to see the same on X drive. I keep wondering what TomTom did to forget the winning product approach. I guess in any revolution, and the iphone is a revolutionary product, old succesful companies lose their way and new more responsive ones fill the void. Having worked for IBM for 40 years i saw how they lost the path(and later refound it). New products are released, not to be the best world class products, but rather to protect the old milk cows and sqeeze the revenue stream for a few more dollars. Customers feel this but sometimes have no other choice. Then along comes a MotionX who wants to be the best in the world and blows everyone away with their energy. Can a TomTom save themselves? IBM did, but only by reinventing themselves not by marketing hype or product protection moves. I sat in pricing meeting at IBM that made me sick and I bet there are a few developers and good management types at TomTom with a case of h1n1. In any case thanks for a great product, MotionX is a winner. I am betting on great things from this company and if they go public worthy of an investment.
What an iPhone GPS app should be
sjonke 5.0 stars Version: 1.1
This is the GPS app that you'll want to show off... and use. Based on Bing maps and data (points of interest), what you get is what you should get on the iPhone - continually updated maps and POI, plus the POI covers everything, not just a selection of popular coffee shops and such - you can search for and find anything, then navigate to it. It caches your route to cover blind spots, although if you have no data connection you can't make a new route, and that is an issue. Nonetheless, this is the one you'll want to use day-to-day because it is live data-based. It does need text-to-speech and lane assist, but hopefully they'll come in updates and it works great as-is. GPS signal has not been an issue for me so far, but it should work with the TomTom mount/receiver if need be. I'm sticking with my Kensington dash/windshield mount for now at least. It's loaded with nice features including iPod controls that even let you make a playlist. It's a must-buy for every iPhone user and it's cheap - $24.99 for a year of voice navigation 3D map service or $2.99 for 30 days if you want to only pay when needed (30 days are included in the app price). Great idea!
Amazing app! MotionX does it again!

I have been a loyal motionx gps user for the last few months on bike rides so when I saw this app I got realy excited. It's so great that I just listed my Navigon 5100 on ebay. There are tons of features on this app and considering the price it's a no-brainer! I mounted my iphone using an inexpensive air-vent holder so my dashboard and windshield are free of clutter.
Another Home Run

I sprung for the $89 Navigon app (I'm not sorry I did, it's a terrific app) but the Motion X Drive comes pretty close, and it costs less than a Latte at Starbucks. I would like to see a landscape mode, and street names given with turn directions. My experience with the original Motion X leads me to believe that these upgrades are not far behind. This company really supports their products and continues to improve them.
Finally a great priced, excellent navigation app!

Like many others, I was looking for an inexpensive navigation app for my 3GS. I purchased the Navcat app and have used it a few times. While it was only $5.99, it barely functioned and left me contemplating dropping the big money on TomTom or Navigon. But before I spent that I took one more look in the App store and found this! I am glad I did! This app is inexpensive but crammed full of goodness! The look and layout is beautiful and it has more features and functionality than my car GPS! iPod controls, fast search, fast GPS location, digital compass, Accurate POI's, I could go on but you can read it for yourself. I like the fact that the developers have opted to make the app itself inexpensive and give you the option of paying ($2.99 for 30 days or $29.99 a year) for spoken directions (after the first 30 days of free voice directions). The "silent" app itself is awesome by itself and will serve my purposes 9 times out of 10, but it's cool that if I'm on a trip and desire spoken directions I can pay just three bucks directly from my phone. The developers note in the app that the data they use is not free (lol it's Microsoft Bing so of course it's not free) , I understand that and applaud them for giving us the option, rather than charging us $89.00 or $99.00. Also this app does not store maps on your iPhone, so there is very little memory usage. I have already moved this app to my firstpage homescreen and from the looks of it, it will be staying put!
Best one yet...

I travel a lot and this will be really useful. I really like how simple it is to use. The destinations are easy to input, and search feature makes it also easy. The wheel interface is elegant. I like it. Nice product. Now I only need my iPhone when I travel.
Just What I've Been waiting for!!!

Excellent solution! No need to pay rediculous charges for navigation! And to the idiots that are talking about payments adding up- obviously you cannot read, it will NOT automatically charge you per month! You either buy 30 days for rediculously CHEAP or the year for 25 bucks. That's it, once the 30 days end, you either purchase another 30 days or end it there. Again, it will not charge you automatically!!
TRIPLE A+ app! Don't waste your $ on the $50-$100 nav apps!

This app is truly amazing for the price! Extremely accurate. Very well thought out user interface.
MotionX might well OWN the turn by turn GPS market soon....

I like the way Fullpower thinks through their apps, and refines them without hesitation. Their (now labeled) Sport app has been pure fun for me since it was introduced, and that experience prompted me to try out the Drive app. It's a winner!. I have been testing the AT&T iPhone app, and I have an Alpine Blackbird GPS turn by turn unit as well. AT&T has been making great strides with their app, and I even began to like it (other than the price), but my two weeks with the MotionX Drive app spoiled me rotten. I love it. Already several meaningfull updates, and the purchase price dropped from the $2.99 I paid to .99 today! I live in the most congested area imaginable (Central NJ), and this app performs astoundingly well. Better than the AT&T app, my Alpine, and every built-in drive device I have been able to ride along with to date. At this price, with a 30 day free voice trial built in, and with the option of buying (in app) either 30 day activations for $3.99, or a FULL YEAR of always current voce prompting for only $25, this app is going to rocket by everyone else, and prove that you don't need a mask and a gun to make a lot of money.
An amazing app for a small price

This app is amazing. Truly full featured, it is comparable if not better than a dedicated gps unit. Motion X apps are always well designed and this is another example demonstrating their abilities to build solid applications.
wowee! if u're looking for driving directions, get this app!!!

love it, love it, love it. Wowee, this is just a great app. Amazing quality for a v1. I'm an owner of their other GPS app and has been amazing to watch all the new functionality that Motion X has added. Can't wait for my next version to see whart's new. Beautiful work on an exceptional app!
Outstanding-works as advertised
RayBob001 5.0 stars Version: 1.2
Hands down, this is best gps app on the MKT today! Like others, who've been disappointed in the limited functionalty/costly apps from AT&T and TomTom, it's a wonderful thing to see this great product. It does everything advertised and then some. For $2.99 (basic app) & small fee for voice guided package, this app is unbeatable!! The only enhancement I can see is to have voice guidance announce street names.
very nice app, tradeoffs vs TomTom

i was lost today wandering around wasting my lunch break. i got back to work and told one of my co-workers how frustrated i was. he recommend this app. . . .it was the best buy. i loaded it up and followed it home. its incredible to me how much information these guys have packed into this program and it includes an impressive bing search engine (not to mention the great graphics and even better price). so let me pass along the good word...try it and buy it.
