As a followup to yesterday's inteview with ngmoco CEO Neil Young, this morning we spoke with Freeverse President Ian Lynch Smith to hear what the recent purchase of Freeverse by ngmoco means to them. The full audio is attached below, but here is a summary of the talk. Originally founded in 1994, Freeverse's earliest titles were Mac shareware games. They later branched out in to games for Windows, XBOX Live Arcade, and most recently the iPhone. Freeverse's was one of the few 3D games that launched with the App Store. Also immediately available were and . They then went on to release a catalog of great iPhone games, both developed in house and and by outside developers published by Freeverse. Since the surprise announcement yesterday of ngmoco's purchase of Freeverse, what we've all been wondering is what is going to change. Ngmoco has recently shifted gears to an entirely free to Read More
Posted 02/23/2010 at 7:41am | by J.R. Bookwalter Ladies and gentlemen, the consolidation of iPhone gaming companies has begun! Will startup ngmoco be the Godzilla of App Store gaming? TechCrunch is reporting that iPhone game startup ngmoco has raised a $25 million series C round and taken its first step toward dominance in the App Store by acquiring Freeverse, creator of such popular games as Moto Chaser, Flick Bowling and Flick Fishing. The financing round was led by Institutional Venture Partners, with existing shareholders Kleiner Perkins, Norwest Venture Partners and Maples Investments also participating. That brings ngmoco’s total capital raised to $40.6 million -- which yet again proves that iPhone gaming is indeed nothing to sneeze at. ngmoco CEO Neil Young (not to be confused with the performer of the same name) claims that he wants to “amass enough scale to accelerate away from the pack,” and the swallowing up of Read More

Apple Hits 1 Billion App Store Downloads!
Calendar16 Thu, 23 Apr 2009 23:24:28 UTC +00:00
Apple was expected to serve up their 1 Billionth (with a capital B) App Store download today, and lo and behold, Apple has announced that they’ve officially seen 1 billion iPhone/iPod Touch applications downloaded from their iTunes App Store! In less than a full year of existence, Apple and the iPhone have managed to make mobile applications as commonplace as an iTunes music purchase, and the App Store’s popularity continues to grow. The total tally of iPhone applications in the iPhone AppStore was estimated to be somewhere in the neighborhood of 25,000 in March 2009. And, with thousands more iPhone applications hitting the AppStore on a monthly basis, Apple’s success with their integrated mobile application delivery model will likely continue. No wonder everyone and their grandmother are trying to launch mobile application stores of their own. For the record, it took Apple six whole months to reach the 500-million milestone. From Read More

Pretty fun game!
Kiggles 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
Accelerometer controls are SPOT ON but the production values are pretty skanky. Not a bad buy though! Improvements that should be made asap: 1. Pause option is needed! Please make a place on the screen we can touch to pause the game! 2. Move the 'attack' button to the right side of the screen so we can attack without taking our finger off the gas :) 3. I turned the music off because it repeats on such a short loop, not sure if that can be fixed, but thought I should mention it. Great start, look forward to an update soon!!
AMAZING. Knockout game-feel. Realistic Graphics.
My wife forbids a Ducati 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Fantastic little game. Super addictive. The reason this is so much better than cro-mag rally and Bandicoot is that a bike is actually controlled by tilt in real life, so the accelerometer is amazing. Also, I just got the Nitro 3D kart game and I was really dissappointed. I think it's that the STYLE of the graphics didn't suit me. They're all kiddie - hyper frantic colors and not particularly sophisticated rendering. It looked like a phone game. Or something for a 5 year old. This is different. It reminds me of the first time I saw Unreal - not that the graphics are THAT good, but they a lot bit more realistic than the others and the game place is really IMMERSIVE in a way that the others are not once you learn how to control the bike. For one thing, it's #@*$(& hard to control the bike at highest difficulty at highest speeds. Just try beating the "Rumbles in the Jungle" level on high. I've been playing this game like nonstop since I bought it. A reviewer of Supermonkeyball said that they hated the fact they were always returned to the first level, because they'd never want to play that level again. I feel just the opposite about this game. I won the game (on the easy setting) after a few hours on shameful nonstop playing, and unlocked all the levels. But I love the first level so much, I'll play it over and over, just trying to beat my last time/score. It's that fun. The fight button is SUPPOSED to be a pain to press, it makes it more realistic- you're trying to ride a bike at 100mph and swing at people?! One of the best things about the game, though, is the sound. Turn off the music and always put on your headphones to play. The cycle sounds are killer. When you're driving a full speed, you'll hear a wind sound you only hear then - you'll know you're going flat out. Enjoy it - it won't last for long ;) Finally, there are these killer cinematic slow-motion scenes whenever you hit a hill too hard where you'll be flying through the air. So cool. The only strange thing was that the difficulty of the levels is non-linear. The second is probably the second-hardest of them all, and level 5 (the jungle) is the hardest by far. There are ten levels in all. T he app has crashed a few times on me on the first day, but I think there was a glitch they fixed, since it doesn't do it anymore. Anyway, get this game! It's the best of any of the apps I've bought by far. If the graphics and rendering on the iPhone are this good, there's no reason not to except SERIOUS games. Bandicoot and Monkeyball and all that are fine, but I mean something like BURNOUT. Or World Cup Soccer. Or Doom. Or even a scaled down version of Grand Theft Auto - why not?
Nice ride!
mypodmonster.com 1.0 stars Version: 1.4
I loved it. First ride was short, but I really improved in my second try. It just takes a little practice. Fun game. Slick graphics. Decent buy.
Like a Wiimote and DS had a baby!
Eric Rice 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
Fantastic gameplay and simple enough for those random moments of downtime.
Great game!
amick 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Very simple, easy, arcade racer. Some great levels and decent graphics.
I like it
OhMyGoshman 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
So far this game is pretty cool. I am unsure if it is actually worth the cost of 9.99 seeing that higher quality games are the same cost or cheaper. It definitely needs pause seeing that this is a mobile device and while using a phone there are a lot of distractions. I would also like it more if the attack button was on the opposite side of the screen so you don't have to remove your finger from the gas in order to touch it. All in all it is pretty impressive to see a game like this on a phone and I think the games will only get better.
lean into the curves
zkn 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Fun graphics and great use of the motion sensor. I kept falling out of my chair on the hairpin curves. Great game!
Overall... Pretty darn good for a phone :D
demon646 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
This is entertaining, looks pretty good, runs very smooth, and controls are good (if you hold the iPhone flat).
Great app
chicago-guy 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Steering works great. Good number of levels and difficulty settings. Ideal for my bus commute, especially while stuck in traffic.
Best iPhone game yet
The Minority 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
I bought this game along with several others upon release, and have found this game to be the most captivating and fun. For me, it soars past cro-mag rally in a heart beat. There are a bunch of different courses to unlock and it is the most enjoyable iphone racing game out there
Great game! Seriously...
Misterberu 4.0 stars Version: 1.1
I'm gonna level with you. This game is good. I don't know what Freeverse did to deserve such negative comments... but it's good. Far better than most of the "big games" on the store (Crash Bandicoot? A joke.). The gameplay is unique, and while you won't be going head to toe with countless other racers, you will still encounter them while driving on the track (every once in a while.). Speaking of tracks, the games graphics are superb (at least for a 3d game). My point is this, great gameplay plus great graphics is a win in my book when it comes to mobile games... and one that only costs 6 dollars? Bah... You get what you pay for. While I agree with other players a "pause" button would be nice, the fact of the matter is that this game is just really fun, really entertaining, and will definitely keep you occupied whenever you're stuck in a situation that requires you to turn to your mobile phone for amusement. This game rocks. 'Nuff said.
Wow
Orion3G 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
I'm a DS and PSP player, and I'm shocked on how good this looks. The controll is touchy at first but you get used to it real fast (esp since level two is so hard...makes you practice!). I can't believe the quality of these launch games. Dload this! Now off to buy Crash Bamdicoot, bomberman, and soduku unlimited :)
I want more levels.
Jortiz 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
I love this game. But I want more levels. I played all weekend until I completed them all. Now what do I do?
Excellent arcade game
KoukiFC3S 5.0 stars Version: 1.1
This game is so much fun. I like it better than the other racing games because the sense of speed is there.
Awsome
mack3000 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Best app
click yes if you agree
the napsterr 3.0 stars Version: 1.2
hard to control. I'd like to see touch steering as an option, or accelerometer controls that aren't as sensitive. Right now i can't event beat level 2.
Doesnt save game progress.
tastone8 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
The game seems a little 2 easy when u run into things u just slide around them. This isnt like the original. Main reason why I bought it. Ok game though. Not worth $10 yet.
Great and Easy To Use
Luqven 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
This is a really fun app that anyone can pick up and play for the first time.
Don't complain because the price dropped
Big.Wave.Dave 4.0 stars Version: 1.2
It's lame to see people complain about the price dropping. As if that doesn't happen everyday with just about everything you buy. You eventually see it for less somewhere else down the line. This is a solid game. If you like racing games you should definately give it a go--regardless of the price.
Surprisingly fun!
Ahiru 4.0 stars Version: 1.1
I was hoping they would release an update, since people stated some annoying features. Even better they lowered the price!
Best action game so far
kozefx 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
Very good game. U won't be upset at buying this one. for 9.99 you get 10 courses to ride on, so figure a buck a course....worth it.
Not very good
JerkyChew 2.0 stars Version: 1.0
I wish I hadn't bought this. The controls are pretty twitchy (although it's the first iphone game I've bought so maybe that's the accelerometer) and extremely hard to get used to. The music is terribly repetitive, just the same basic song over and over and over again. But the part that made me want to punch babies was the controls - Your accelerator is a left on-screen button. There's no analog sense to it, just on or off. Granted that's a limitation of the platform I guess but it makes it hard to handle. But that's not my big complaint - My big complaint is with the attack button. When you come across another rider you can attack them by hitting this button. But the designers put the button on the same side as the accelerator! What this means is, while you're frantically trying to 'steer' and stay on the track, you're now expected to move your thumb off the gas, adjust for the drop in speed, and hit the attack button all in one motion! It's terrible and made me wish they had a free demo or something. Bleck.
Fabulous!
Erin8504 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
I totally loved playing this game on my computer way back when. The day it came out for Playstation was great. Now, I can have this game on my iPhone! I'm stoked. I've completed all of the levels and can't wait for an update with more riders and more levels! The graphics are wonderful. However, the punch feature is kind of pointless. Who actually punches people while riding a motorcycle? I'd love to see some of the levels from the original game; like the dirt arena with the jumps. Well worth the ten dollars!
Fun
The_Good_Names_are_Always_Taken 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
The controls were tricky at first with no directions, but once you figure it out it's a lot of fun. Pushing away on either side turns and pushing down swerves, pretty much like a real bike. Definitly worth the price.
Good
xI InFeKt Ix 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
I would have liked to see more in this game, the graphics are pretty good, I don't know what more of graphics you can expect from an iPod. Even if the graphics could be better, it would kill the battery even more than it already does. It doesn't have a pause button which can be annoying, and the controls are very good, which means you only need to tilt it a little bit to steer. I just wish it actually was a racing game that involved other character's racing against you. This is a time cuircut game and only has like 10 levels. Worth around 7 bucks. It could have been a little bit better, or different.
Awsome
elliott22 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Tie game is great. The graphics are great. People say the graphics are terrible but it's an iPod. Would more could u expect. One thing I must complain about is that there is no pause button. U guys shoulld add that for the next update. But overall great job.
Does what it is supposed to do
arcticmonkey13 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
Come on, this is a phone or ipod game. Look at the standard sevent dollar phone game and then look at this. The graphics are about the same as the ds's IN MOST CASES IAM NOT TALKING ABOUT NINTENDO GAMES, HERE. The price is a bit high and the difficulty setting is non existand, I was having trouble and lowered it to the bottom, but this had no effect what so ever. The environments are kind of stupid and so is the music, but, overall good game.
Fun fun fun!!
henpen22 5.0 stars Version: 1.4
Wowzers! This game is fun! A tad bit sensitive but other wise its sooo funn!!! Totallyyyy worth one quarter four dimes five nickles and ten pennies!!
WOW!
Bugboys98 5.0 stars Version: 1.4
this game is da bomb! i can not believe how great the graphics are and the handling is! this game is my #1 most favorite game for the iphone/ipod touch!
Great value for the price
agentsmithone 4.0 stars Version: 1.4
The game offers up solid motion-based controls, plenty of racing challenge, and decent, if passable 3D graphics. Wingnuts Motochaser would benefit from a training course of difficulty setting. I'd recommend this game to anyone who'd play a racing game on their iPhone/iPod touch.
Fun!
Macsdamage 4.0 stars Version: 1.4
This game is really cool. I hope they update it with smoother graphics and multiplayer capabilities. As it stands should be $5, but I bought it anyway!
Fun!
Ramster! 5.0 stars Version: 1.4
