Apple Releases iTunes Movie Trailers for iOS
Calendar16 Wed, 12 Oct 2011 19:43:35 UTC +00:00
Just when you thought the onslaught of software releases was finished for the day, Apple drops another new title. iTunes Movie Trailers for iOS is a new app that contains hundreds of movie trailers and other film related information. Much like other apps in the category, such as Flixster, Apple’s new Trailers software gives you access to all kinds of data regarding new movies. You can watch previews, read overviews, and discover showtimes for new releases… All of the trailers (at least the ones I’ve tested so far) display in HD, and look wonderful on a big screen TV via AirPlay. You can browse movies by genre, release date, and box office success. You can even do a broad search of the entire catalog. Just like the aforementioned Flixster app, Trailers gives you access to Rotten Tomatoes movie reviews. The service compiles reviews from hundreds of different film critics from around Read More

Apple's All-Time Top 10 Free iPad Apps
Calendar16 Thu, 20 Jan 2011 20:24:44 UTC +00:00
Yesterday, we went over the top 10 free iPhone Apps available on the App Store (the paid apps, too). It was a list of the most downloaded free applications of all time. While it may not always reflect the quality of each App, it does indicate their popularity. That said, there are also plenty of iPad Apps that are getting attention. Here's a List of the most popular:    Pandora on the iPad is great for listening to music while you browse, or catch up on your RSS feeds. You simply search for the artist or music you want to listen to and hit play. There's a lot to listen to on Pandora radio, and it's a free App worth taking a look at. Much like Google Mobile for iPhone, Google mobile for iPad gives you a suite of Google applications within a single iPad App. You can search the internet Read More
How To Set New Years Resolutions with Your iPhone
Calendar16 Thu, 30 Dec 2010 17:37:14 UTC +00:00
Posted 12/30/2010 at 9:37am | by Michael Simon I've always been pretty stubborn when it comes to resolutions, and something tells me I’m not going to find an app to convince me to start bettering myself on the day I’m most likely to be overweight, depressed, broke and/or hungover. So, instead of working on myself, I’ve resolved to use my iPhone to help my friends change. I’ve even made a checklist (2010 Resolutions List, $0.99). I call them resoyoutions. Surgeon general warnings aside, cigarettes still have a certain cachet, and I have no problem with my style-impaired friends lighting up. I do, however, have a problem with e-cigarettes. There’s no possible way to look cool while holding a ceramic stick with a painted filter that emits wisps of diethylene glycol “smoke” every few seconds.  Apps such as Smoking Tracker ($0.99) and Quitter (free) are designed to keep quitters on the right Read More
There are many people right now who received an iPhone or iPod Touch for Christmas this year. Many of them may or may not yet know their way around iOS, the operating system that those iDevices run on. Most essential, to begin with, are the Apps. You’ve all heard the old catchphrase “There’s an App for that.” Well, that’s because there often is. Let’s take a look at some the essential free iPhone Apps (or iPad and iPod Touch). Please note that the App descriptions are as they appear on the  App Store: AOL Radio powered by CBS Radio features over 350+ free stations spanning dozens of music genres, including pop, urban, country, indie, jazz, oldies and rock. Also choose from over 150+ popular terrestrial stations across the United States from CBS Radio including The World Famous KROQ, WXRT, 1010 WINS AM, The Fan, 92.3 Now FM and more. Now with Read More

The iPad makes a great entertainment device. Not only does it play games, it allows you to watch movies and TV shows. Apps like Netflix and the ABC Player are two favorites for that reason alone. It really is a great way to watch movies. What's more, Apps like Netflix work on an iPod Touch and an iPhone as well. Yes, it's a small screen, but it still looks great, and it's a nice way to watch a movie without disturbing others. Then there are Apps that stream music, Apps like Pandora radio. Entertainment-type Apps are some of our favorites. Let's take a look at the ones we love the most:   This is the ultimate entertainment App on iOS. If you have a Netflix account and an iOS device, you need Netflix. If you have an iOS device, but no Netflix account…you need to consider jumping on board. If anything, Read More
How the iPad Is Influencing Web Apps

The Web Development Series is supported by Rackspace, the better way to do hosting. Learn more about Rackspace’s hosting solutions here. Google officially unveiled its Chrome Web Store yesterday, and with it, a veritable treasure trove of highly optimized web apps that use technologies like JavaScript and HTML5 to create optimized experiences that blur the lines between web and desktop apps. We’ve already profiled some of those apps, most of which work on any modern browser, not just Google Chrome. A few months ago, we talked about how the iPad is transforming web design. We dubbed this phenomenon the “iPadification of the web.” As much as the iPad has had an influence on web design, its influence over this next wave of web applications is even more apparent. Looking through the Google Web Store, we couldn’t help but notice the similarities — in some cases perfect facsimiles — that some of Read More

iPad App Roundup: 6 Television & Movie Apps
Calendar16 Tue, 03 Aug 2010 14:55:12 UTC +00:00
If you’re a movie and/or television buff, then the iPad may be your new best friend. We’ve got a round up of six different apps to help you consume your favorite televisions shows and movies. Enjoy! Netflix has made a name for itself with its excellent service, and many were surprised when it announced it would be coming to the iPad before the iPhone (on launch day, too). The Netflix app is basically a one-window browser that loads a tailored version of the site, allowing you to watch any movie in its instant-watch collection. You can also manage your movie queue, adding or deleting movies as you please. The app isn’t very polished, but it works. I’ve watched the entire three seasons of Avatar: The Last Airbender on it without incident. The app is free; the subscription, however, isn’t, and it’ll run you $9 a month. There’s a free 30-day trial, Read More

Follow Josh on Twitter at @globalmoxie. He’s author of two books, including the following tips from his newest, Tapworthy: Designing Great iPhone Apps. An app’s shelf life lasts exactly as long as it can hold users’ attention. iPhone owners chew through apps, gulping down their content, then tossing them out and moving on. Studies show that the average user never launches an app more than 20 times before abandoning it. Less than 15% of downloaded apps get so much as a glance over the course of a week, and two months after purchase, only one-third of downloaded apps ever get used again. This may not matter to you if your goal is to build one-off novelty apps; in that case, you might even expect Read More

Apperang pays users for app installs
Calendar16 Tue, 29 Jun 2010 00:30:00 UTC +00:00
The App Store is a busy place -- there are lots and lots of apps out there, and almost all of them need attention. Some developers are apparently willing to pay for that attention, so enter Apperang, a new service that purports to pay users to install certain apps on their iPhones. MobileCrunch has the breakdown -- Apperang has a verification system running that will check if you've installed apps in their system (including Booyah's MyTown and Flixter's Movies -- I saw nine apps on the service, but that may be limited by location), and then will pay out a few cents, both for installing the app yourself, as well as referring it to other Apperang users. Is it kosher? Pretty much -- lots of app developers already pay for advertising that's targeted towards app installation, and this deal isn't any different. Rather than pocketing all the profit, Apperang is just Read More
Movies by Flixster, the free go-to iPhone app for everything movie related, has been given the always greatly appreciated iPad optimization.  Now you can view movie showtimes, find theaters near you, purchase tickets, and much more from your iPad in fully optimized, eye catching glory. For better or worse, the iPad-optimized version of Movies launches and stays in landscape mode.  Sorry portrait lovers.  You will find your usual tabbed categories at the bottom of the screen with information for those categories being displayed on the left-hand side in a scrollable list.  Items that are tapped on are detailed in the much larger right-hand side section. Basically, if you have used the iPhone version of the app, you will have no problem navigating your way around this bad boy.  It contains many of the same features as the iPhone version, it’s just all easier to access thanks to the much larger screen. The newest version of Movies by Flixster has been released into the App Store, and it includes tons of new features that should make its six million plus iPhone and iPod touch users very happy. The first thing you may notice about the updated version of Movies is that the user interface has been refreshed a bit to make the experience more enjoyable, but that isn’t the only thing it has going for it in v3.0.  The developers set out to make this version of Movies your go-to app for everything movie related, including Netflix queue management for both DVD and instant queues, integrated movie ticketing, iTunes Movie Store integration, and built-in maps, so you can find all of the theaters playing a particular movie in your area. Movies v3.0 additional features: Movies is able to do it all, so now you can remove all of those other single-use apps that Read More

One of the things about trying to be a writer is being consistent. This means that no matter how many fancy schmancy new iPhones come out, you ‘ve got to stick to covering free apps on the weekends. You ‘ve just got to. This weekend Patrick and I are covering: iTunes links for the apps are now before the jump “ let us know if that ‘s more convenient for you folks Bump Concept: Lets you swap contact information with people easily, quickly, and wirelessly – via just a quick ‘fist bump’ while you’ve both got the app open. Strengths: Very easy to setup (just tell it where to find your own contact info in your Address Book), super easy to use.  It recognizes if you try to add someone who’s already in your Address Book and offers to merge info. Non-Strengths: Requires that you provide your email address and share Read More
Apple Hits 1 Billion App Store Downloads!
Calendar16 Thu, 23 Apr 2009 23:24:28 UTC +00:00
Apple was expected to serve up their 1 Billionth (with a capital B) App Store download today, and lo and behold, Apple has announced that they’ve officially seen 1 billion iPhone/iPod Touch applications downloaded from their iTunes App Store! In less than a full year of existence, Apple and the iPhone have managed to make mobile applications as commonplace as an iTunes music purchase, and the App Store’s popularity continues to grow. The total tally of iPhone applications in the iPhone AppStore was estimated to be somewhere in the neighborhood of 25,000 in March 2009. And, with thousands more iPhone applications hitting the AppStore on a monthly basis, Apple’s success with their integrated mobile application delivery model will likely continue. No wonder everyone and their grandmother are trying to launch mobile application stores of their own. For the record, it took Apple six whole months to reach the 500-million milestone. Nice utility, needs some fine tuning
Johnny Sombrero 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
This utility is pretty nice, once you initially get it moving. Once a zip code is input, the only way to get the number pad to go away is to quit and relaunch the app, or to tap various places across the screen. The ability to hit go directly from the zip code field would be very nice. If the zip code field was limited to 5 digits, and the go button was moved next to the zip code field, this would be a 5 star application.
Great for movie fans!
Groovykit 5.0 stars Version: 1.1
Read some mediocre reviews but it looks like the update addressed them. It was easy, intuitive, and the integration with rotten tomatoes is fantastic (my favorite review site). Overall, I give this app a BIG thumbs up.
Great app.
BlueVoid 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Fantastic functionality. Does everything I need and more.. And you can't beat free!
Great app!!!
Watson88 5.0 stars Version: 1.5
Nice clean interface. Love the upcoming DVD section, would be nice but not totally necessary, if the DVD section could break down if a Blu-ray version is available.
Much better now
rjwags 5.0 stars Version: 1.5
I was previously using BoxOffice (now called Now Playing), but I'd say the most recent update makes this the best movie app available. Well done!
Perfect
JakeM741 5.0 stars Version: 1.1
Idk what everyone is complaining about. It's not the apps fault it Cant find you, call apple if you're having that problem. Works great for me. Great app
Sweet. This is a great utility.
Mainesky 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
This app is lighting fast on wifi...much more useful than waiting for all the graphics and trailers on the movie websites.
Nice update!
Application user 5.0 stars Version: 1.1
Awesome!!! Thanks for the update. I was using two apps to get the movie trailers and the rotten tomatoes rating, now I can just use this one!! Thanks again!
Amazing App, Apple Quality & it's FREE!! (You can't beat this app!)
MathewM 5.0 stars Version: 1.5
I just downloaded the latest version of Movies on my iPhone and I must say this is a beautifully designed app! It's very fitting and has an Apple-level quality to it. I have one suggestion, under the "Theaters" selection a 3rd tab for "Favorite Theaters" would help clean up the "Theaters Near Postal" and "Theaters By Name" lists.
Horrible.
My wife forbids a Ducati 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
This has great potential. Decent interface, films and theaters load fast. Even had tiny small-run and rep theaters here in NYC. But please! There's no submit button for zip code. Why even have this? Pull it from your location automatically. It crashes on a bunch of theaters. When it doesn't crash, the movie details are in code / gibberish. This is a sloppy untested hack job. Finish it right. And when you do, get rid of the stupid 'donate' button. It's tacky to state at that all the time. Charge a dollar or two and be done with it.
Just OK
skopcho 2.0 stars Version: 1.0
When you type in your zip code, the keypad never goes away, so you have to restart the app in order to use it. That's obviously a pretty big problem and I can't imagine how the developer missed it - it's the first thing you are required to do! And about the zip codes, why isn't there a simple find me button like just about every other app? Except for those 2 problems, the rest of the app is actually pretty nice and would deserve 3, maybe 4 stars. A perfect movies/showtimes app would combine features of this and the other one, Box Office.
Best movie app in the app store!!!
Starspotter 5.0 stars Version: 1.5
The look of this app sets at far appart from other movie apps. It is so easy to use and functions perfectly. No bad with this app.
superb
sd11 5.0 stars Version: 1.1
one of the best free apps hands down!
Perfect
M. Leprae 5.0 stars Version: 1.1
Perfect
Best of show
Blatherdude 5.0 stars Version: 1.5
I tried them all, this is the best!!
Wow
RMills 5.0 stars Version: 1.5
The old UI was very clumsy and hard to navigate, in my opinion. They have hit the ball out of the park with this update! It's so east to use. Definately the best free app that I have used!!
By far the best movie app out right now free or not
Jjunior887 5.0 stars Version: 1.5
I was using one of the pay movie apps for a while but I saw the update for this and WOW, it's much better now. I really like the fact that it now has DVDs as well as theaters so I can keep up with what's coming out on DVD too. Very nice interface and most of the newer movies have trailers too. You guys should be charging for this app, it's worth it.
3rd place out of 3 similar apps
Will in Austin 2.0 stars Version: 1.1
Lags behind Showtimes and Box Office.
Zip code bug
tech review 2.0 stars Version: 1.0
Needs enter or done button.
Amazingly simple, easy to use and Free!
Luqven 5.0 stars Version: 1.5
Movies.app (now just plain movies) really does deserve a 5 star rating. I have tried One-Tap and any other movie showtimes/tickets app out there, paid or free, and so far this is the only one i like to use. While it's user interface is not as eye catching as OneTap's, it simple, recognizable, one button commands (such as the locate me being the same as it is maps) that make it feel native, not like some widget ported to the iphone. Another favorite of mine is the built in IMDB link. Heck, you don't need a review, it's free and it offers support if you need it...why NOT just download it to at least try it out.
Almost Perfect
TJM/CODE 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
Double Tap on Box Office Poster should take you to the Movie Details page with the closest theatre selected. Well worth a donation!
Nice
iMacOffice 4.0 stars Version: 1.1
Has some really nice features. Having video is great along with the weekly dollar volume. I would like to see the rest of the review of the movie, it just stops as seen in this screenshot. One would think you could tap on the section to read more and it would move to the right for the balance of the review. The best one out there though, no need to buy one.
Ok... But buggy
Tbone323 2.0 stars Version: 1.1
It seems prett good but I wish it would show more upcoming movies. Also, it shuts down whenever I try to use location based services
Good with some flaws
Hotoru 3.0 stars Version: 1.1
One thing that bugs me about this app is the small text box for the showtimes.. Batman was playing more than ten times a day at the local cinema. I only saw three times in the small box. If you tap the box it will pop up a window that has the rest of the times. (sometimes, if you can hit right place). That is one more step than is needed. Not being able to see the times well is a pretty big deal considering that is 90% my use.
best movie app
ddacunha 5.0 stars Version: 1.5
such a great app, good job Jeff!!!
very nice
michje1 5.0 stars Version: 1.5
after a few updates, this app really shines.
Was great but now worse
snuzr 3.0 stars Version: 3.01
This was a great app but the latest updates have made it worse. I just want showtimes. The newest updates have added a trailer before you can get to the main screen that you have to click through. And now the developers have felt it necessary to add small photos next to the movies playing making the showtimes longer to load. And then there are the ads which have to load now. I have switched to The Fandango app. Same info but no Trailer or heavy graphics to load, thus it is quicker and smoother.
